[RBW] Re: Sam Hillbornes Go Live Tomorrow

2024-05-14 Thread Drew Henson
those new colors look great. i have a sam from the last run (i think) in
silver that i love. the homer is what originally attracted me to riv a long
time ago, but i think the current version of the sam is better in the
current version of the homer.

i also had a crust romeo for a bit concurrently with the sam and while i
don't mind low trail, i preferred the sam and sold the crust.

[RBW] Re: YAHT (Yet Another Handlebar Thread) :D

2023-11-17 Thread Drew Henson
I've had the RH rando bars and the chaco bars on my Sam, which is from the
last run. I like them both a lot. I'm going with the chaco bars now though
- plenty of room to roam, I can stretch out if I want, and i feel like the
most recent Rivendell's are really well suited for upright bars vs drops
(except maybe the Roadini).

Re: [RBW] Expert level bike commuting strategies?

2023-10-27 Thread Drew Henson
Seattle bike commuter here, going on over a decade with about a 9 mile trip
one way. Although I don't ride everyday like I once did with work from home
setup I have now. I agree with a lot of the above. My strategies to keep it
interesting:

- Tinkering, testing new set ups. Biking is where a lot of my hobby $$ goes
and I like trying out new stuff.
- Having two commuting bikes that are set up differently. I have one
upright bike (sam) and one drop bar (crust dreamer). But with dyno hubs and
fenders, but very different to ride. 7000c vs 650b, v brakes versus discs,
etc.
- Bag options. Tray a basket bag set up versus panniers. Leaving more at
the office versus packing more.
- Changing up route up as much as possible. That wandrer app looks awesome!
Sometimes in the summer I like to bike by the baseball stadium to see the
crowds or bike along the beach.

Re: [RBW] Considering trading my Ram for a Lightning Bolt

2023-10-25 Thread Drew Henson
I have been daydreaming about going the opposite direction from the OP. I
currently have a v1 lightning bolt that i use for my rambl-y weekend rides
and a more recent canti romanceur i use for commuting. I also have a recent
sam i use for commuting and errands. i'm thinking about selling the
romanceur and, in turn, keeping an eye out for a ram. but i would probably
keep it 700c. who knows.

 Hey Max,

I sort of love this dilemma. As much as my platonic ideal of a bike has
been shaped by Jan Heine, featuring skinny, thin-wall tubing and a flat
 top
tube, I will definitely back a 650b Ram. I would wholeheartedly recommend
MAFAC Raids (or go all-in with the Compass/Rene Herse updates). I have a
couple pairs of Raids I'm reconditioning with brass bushings/washers and
could probably ship one your way for a reasonable fare. Not the point of
 me
 posting though.

I had a V1 XL Canti Bolt for 14 months, using it for randonneuring as
well as some gravel rides and mixed terrains touring (with smallish front
panniers on a lowrider rack). It was nice to look at and often felt great,
but it never really fit me (too long of top tube, seemingly resolved in
current geometry). I think I put just over 4k miles on it in that
 timespan,
which is probably the fastest mileage rate of any of my bikes to date.

However, I also got a 62 (so 60 C–C, as it would happen) Rambouillet
about the same time, and the connection felt deeper, sooner. It was
stripped to the bare steel and was sporting an eccentric genius 650b

Re: [RBW] Re: Bikes For Sale: Craigslist, ebay, etc. Fall 2022 edition

2023-03-17 Thread Drew Henson
Is it cool to shamelessly include our own craigslist listings? Selling my
MIT AHH in Seattle from the 2019 run (I replaced it with a sam). Would
prefer to keep it local. I I'm also selling a Crust Romanceur frame size M
if anyone is in the market which I could ship. Love the bike, just too
small.

[RBW] Re: Seat Post Slippage

2023-03-06 Thread Drew Henson
Update - I put some park tool super grip on there for a little extra
stickiness. Anyone have experience with this stuff? Do you just use this
alone on a seat post or is it combined with some grease on the lower part
of the post?

old thread, but does anyone have one of thee laying around they'd be will

this blue lug version would be perfecto. the MT-54 would be too short i

[RBW] Seat Post Slippage

2023-01-26 Thread Drew Henson
Anyone have any issues with the stock seat post (the one included with the
frame) slipping with the latest sam frames? Happened to me on my first
shakedown ride yesterday.

I have a new nitto stem and some park tool supergrip on the way but was
curious if anyone else experienced this. Or if there's any advice on using
the park tool super grip?

Also depends on if you want to run fenders. I don't think the minimotos
have all that much clearance depending on tire size.

Sorry about that! I based my decision with my experience with the fit of my
2019 58cm Homer. The 57 cm sam has a longer reach/effective top tube than
my homer and i wouldn't have been able to use drop bars i don't think (but
swept back bars would easily work).

2022-12-07 Thread Drew Henson
just grabbed a 54cm silver. i went into thinking i'd go for a limeolive but
something about the very understated silver made me change my mind at the
last minute.

i have an 87 cm pbh so i could have fit the 57 but i wanted to fall on the
upper end of the fit range. really keen to see how this rides differently
than my 2019 MIT Homer. now the fun begins... finding all the build parts!

I am planning to grab a 54cm one to replace my 2019 homer (58cm). haven't
decided on color yet and they both look so good.

will be whipping up a sales post later but if anyone browsing might have
interest in the homer let me know. it's a sublime ride with swept back bars

2022-07-07 Thread Drew Henson
I have a pair on a fairly new crust romanceur, and i like them quite a bit.
rear hub is no louder than a white industry hub i have on another bike. I
really like the SP generator hub, i think it's a good value.

I am curious if the spoke tensioning holds up. I probably have about 100

Anywho, they are now available to purchase as separate rims rather than

[RBW] Re: Double Rivendell Models

2022-06-24 Thread Drew Henson
This resonates with me because I have 4 bikes that are *slightly* different
flavors of the same bike - Riv MIT Homer, Crust canti romanceur, crust
canti lightening bolt, crust dreamer (the two canti crusts are so very
similar). Granted, some mix of geometry there, but any of these bike could
be set up as a commuter, grocery getter, road bike, or rando bike. I've
been feeling guilty lately for owning these and spending money to build
these out... shouldn't I be satisfied with one great all around bike (which
any of these are) ?!?! But I love all 4 for different reasons and they're
each set up differently so, what can you do?

[RBW] Bag for hub area rack

2022-04-05 Thread Drew Henson
Does anyone know if the current backabike bag fits on the hub area rack? Th
upper latches look too wide in the pics to me but hard to say. Did they
sell a smaller version at one point?

Re: [RBW] Re: Great Blue Homers

2021-11-24 Thread Drew Henson
Does anyone know why one might sell a perfectly fine 58cm homer with 650b
tires (bought almost 3 years ago) and get one of these new 54.5cm with 700c
tires and downtube bosses?

Ok, I admit it, it's me. I have a 58 cm, 650b'd homer. My pbh is 87, the
58 is just a tad long for me if I want to run noodles but it is an
otherwise ideal commuter with chaco bars. But I am for some reason very
tempted by the newer frame.

[RBW] Re: Show Me Your Roadeo!

2021-09-29 Thread Drew Henson
does pbh still provide the best guidance for sizing a roadeo? two posters
in this thread think they should have gone a size up.

my pbh is ~87cm. i have a MIT 58 CM AHH. That bike is perfectly sized for
swept back bars but I found it to be a tad too long when i used drop bars.

for my pbh, in what seems to me to be a classic riv website "nuance", they
recommend either 59 or a 61 in the roadeo. (chart suggest 59, frame
description says 59 or 61 depending on preferences). I'd go with a 57 if i
were just going by stack/reach on bike insights.

[RBW] Banana sax vs Berthoud saddle bag

2021-08-02 Thread Drew Henson
Has anyone owned both of these?

Riv lists the banana sax as 7x9x5, which is ~ 5L give or take, probably a
little less given the taper. Berthoud lists the saddle bag volume as 2.4L.
In pics the banana sax does not look twice as large.

Thanks in advance!

[RBW] WTB - Clem L, Cheviot, Or similar

2020-06-29 Thread Drew Henson
Hi all,

My wife is in the market so I thought I would try the group to see if there
was a used option out there. She doesn't need much mostly just comfort for
cruising around the hood with the kids. Shes' ~5'-7" with an 83cm pbh and
I'm thinking one of the step thru rivs would be ideal, although I'd
entertain something else properly sized. I've seen a few clem L's pass
through the group recently. I was hoping she could just ride my AHH with
choco bars but the standover is an issue. We're in Seattle.

Thanks!

2020-06-17 Thread Drew Henson
it's june-uary here in seattle so i'm thinking about bike ponchos, this
thread has been helpful. anyone have any experience with this cleverhood?
it has a waterproof rating listed but it seems like it's on the low end of
the spectrum, the cleverlite seems pretty decent too.

i'd probably just splurge for the faiweather one if it had reflective

pictures on the site but it's hard to judge.

Anyone used this one? Seems decent as well.

[RBW] Hub Area Rack Pannier Options

2020-01-24 Thread Drew Henson
Looking to grab a hub area rack but it looks like the rack clamp space
along the top is a little too narrow for the swift junior ranger panniers I
have. What are some other panniers that folks have used with this rack
(notwithstanding the Riv bags, which aren't in stock anyway)?Ortlieb I
guess? I like the junior rangers because they have a side pouch and a front
zipper, and are water resistant enough. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: MIT AHH vs Canti Sam

2020-01-16 Thread Drew Henson
I'm in Seattle, but I appreciate it. Of course the fact that they found a
couple 55cm Sams laying in the back room, that would be my size, rehashed
the internal debate I went through when I got the homer.

I like the ride of the homer for my commute (9 miles each way) but it's
also not my preferred choice for sportier rides. It also wouldn't be my
choice for 1-2 night camping trip or gravel ride. This could be limited by
my imagination as I just don't see people using the AHH for that, but I
have seen people use the sam for it. So the homer, for me at least, it
kinda stuck in the commuter zone which is totally fine, I just wonder if
the sam might be a little more versatile overall by providing some beef for
the tougher stuff (NOT adventure riding or long touring, note) while also
hitting the commuter zone.

[RBW] MIT AHH vs Canti Sam

2020-01-16 Thread Drew Henson
I've had an MIT AHH for about a year now. Really like the ride, perfect
commuter for me. But I was wondering if I might prefer the slightly burlier
sam. I think I also prefer the sam aesthetics over the MIT AHH. But I know
Riv lumps them into the same category for 95% of the cases so I was
wondering if anyone had ridden both and could comment on the
differences/similarities?

I did a search and couldn't find an old thread so apologies if this has
been discussed before.

Re: [RBW] Re: Berthoud Saddles

2019-04-16 Thread Drew Henson
Just to add my experience, I have two berthoud aspins that I really like.
One is almost a year old and one is only about 3 months in. The year old
one is very very comfortable. I had a brooks b17 for about 8 years before
that and it was fine. Plenty comfortable but eventually i couldn't get the
tension where i wanted it.

Before I splurged for the second berthoud I tried a selle anatomica and it
took me one ride to figure out it wasn't for me. Not only is it way too
"soft", but the relatively flat shape caused the sharp edges to rub against
my legs. I also didn't care for the leather finishing.

[RBW] Re: Front vs. rear loads for AHH

2018-09-12 Thread Drew Henson
i'm on the pre-order for the MIT AHH and it will be my primary commuter,
and plan on setting it up like Grant's AHH as shown on the staff bike page-
Mark's rack with basket on the front and pletscher rear rack and medium
saddlesack on the back. this should easily handle my typical load (change
of clothes + lunch + tools). if i need a heavier load i'll just use
panniers on the rear. i suspect i wouldn't like a heavy front load handling
based on my experience with a front load on a surly lht I used to have.
never felt quite right.

my current commuter is an elephant nfe which is low trail. it handles a
front load beautifully unless i go too heavy. then i get a shimmy at high
speed and that's a whole other ball of wax.

[RBW] Re: MIT Homer pre-order

2018-08-07 Thread Drew Henson
I (pre)ordered one the other day. I’ve been wanting an an AHH for a while now
but the MUSA frames were just out of my budget, so I jumped at the MIT version.
Admittedly I’d prefer the more horizontal top tube and shorter wheel base, but
what can you do. My only bike now is an elephant Nfe which is low trail and
pretty “lively” and a lot of fun to ride, but I think the AHH will make an
awesome partner for days I want something more stable and comfortable. That’s
the plan anyway.

Side note: I’ve seen a guy lately cruising around West Seattle and downtown
Seattle on an Atlantis with double tt. Looks awesome.

[RBW] Re: A Homer Hilsen vs LHT - Will I notice a difference?

2017-12-29 Thread Drew Henson
Thanks for the input everyone,. I am in the Seattle area, and my goals this
year are to do more gravel riding and to complete the Seattle to Portland
ride. My primary use, however, is a 9 mile commute (with some decent
climbs in parts) with the previously mentioned 10-15 lbs. I'm really
looking for a bike to tackle the commute but also be able to handle the
Seattle to Portland ride (another bike will be my gravel bike). Seems like
the AHH is probably the best Riv to handle that I just wanted some opinions
over the difference over the LHT. With the LHT i definitely notice the
weight on my commute and I want something snappier.

[RBW] A Homer Hilsen vs LHT - Will I notice a difference?

2017-12-27 Thread Drew Henson
Are there any surly LHT owners that also have an A Homer Hilsen? I'm
curious how the ride really differs, in practical terms. I currently own
an LHT and it's been a great bike, but it's "too much" bike for me. I'm
looking for something that would be snappier than the LHT but still able to
carry a 10-15 lb commuting load. I've liked to looks of an AHH for a long
time but am concerned that I'd be trading one heavy steel bike for another,
without much difference in the ride when it comes down to it.

Then there's the AHH vs Sam Hilborne debate I guess, which Rivendell
brought up themselves when I emailed asking about AHH availability.. So if
you've owned a Sam and an LHT I'd be interested in your experience as well.

I've browsed this use group a bunch but this is my first post, so thanks in
advance for any info!
