[RBW] Asheville Riv Rendesvous group

2024-09-29 Thread Frank Burkybile
It sounds like many are without power but reaching out regardless. Watching
the news and recognizing places that we visited during this Riv ride
weekend. We are all shocked at the misfortune your area has suffered and
truly hope that you and your loved ones are doing well. Take care friends ❤️

[RBW] Moving sale - everything must go!

2024-08-28 Thread Frank Burkybile
Hi all! I am beginning to pack out for an international move and sadly
clearing out some bike stuff. I have pictures of almost everything here
<https://photos.app.goo.gl/Fnxeq4m6ivBaqQtE8>, the rest will get posted as
soon as I pull it out of boxes. If you have specific items that you would
like to see a closer picture of, just let me know.

I am located in Richmond, VA and am happy to meet in person if you are
nearby. Otherwise, buyer covers shipping unless we make alternate
arrangements. I am also happy to discuss reasonable counteroffers and/or
discounts if you are interested in multiple items.

I will likely have some more stuff that may be added as I pack, so check
back!

Thanks for looking and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!
Frank

No need for correction. 56 were 26 inch , the 58 were 700c. I've had both
and preferred the 56 so I bought another one after I sold the 58. Just sayin

Re: [RBW] Re: RAGBRAI?

2024-01-25 Thread Frank Burkybile
Hi Leah et al.,

I agree with Pam, the Mountains to Coast ride in NC is a great introduction
and her advice tracks with my experience. A word of warning: you may become
a convert but since we are members of this Riv group, it’s probably a safe
assumption that people already know that you are bike crazy.

I grew up in southwest Iowa, in an occasional start town of RAGBRAI, so
cross state rides were just natural things that people would do. I rode the
CycleNC event last year and brought along a friend who already had a bike
but wasn’t a “cyclist” nor aware that this is a thing that people do.
Following the ride, he can’t stop talking about it and has been trying to
convince the rest of our friend group to do the ride this year.

The logistics of how to travel to a state with a bike, figure out where to
park and how to get back there at the end may sound overwhelming but is
very solvable. Especially if Pam will be there (hi Pam!).

I agree that RAGBRAI is kind of a lot. I have ridden BRAN which is very
different and enjoyable but Nebraska can be hot in June and the terrain is
only so interesting. I have heard that the UP Michigan ride is nice too but
I can’t personally speak to that. The Mountains to Coast ride in NC is easy
to recommend.

Good luck!
-Frank

[RBW] Re: Newer Sam Hillborne/Toyo Atlantis crossover

2023-11-27 Thread Frank Burkybile
I have both a Toyo Atlantis and an early Sam Hillborne. I agree that the
Atlantis is pretty stout and I don't notice much flexing, even if pushed
hard. My Sam feels lighter and easier to get up to cruising speed when
riding. I ride them both in the city, light touring, and limited MTB
trails, they will both do the job. The largest difference is the tire
clearances. If you haven't noticed that this is an issue for you, I would
say it probably wouldn't be as big of a difference as you might think.
Having said that, if I were to get rid of one, it would be the Sam. Hope
that this helps!

Re: [RBW] Tire Recommendations

2023-08-10 Thread Frank Burkybile
While most of my bikes are currently running Rene Herse tires which I am
happy with and have yet to flat, I fully endorse Schwalbe marathons.

Fixing flats is one of my least favorite activities and I have accepted the
fact that I happily pay more for a tire that is puncture resistant.

I ride mostly in urban areas (city center, streets, some trails) and never
had a flat over the several thousand miles I put on them.

Caveats: always check your pressure and watch what you ride over.

[RBW] Re: Nice Rivendell, Goodrich and Sevens for Sale

2023-01-24 Thread Frank Brose
Buy the Goodrich if it fits and can handle the tires you want to run. They
are rare and built by a true craftsman. The quality of Curt's builds are
second to none and most custom builders would attest to that and they have
a ride to match. I know because I had Curt build me a 650b bike that would
fit 42's back when the 650b's were just starting to become popular. I've
had at least 6 different Riv's. All fine bikes but not as fine as a
Goodrich. You won't be disappointed and if you are you'll certainly be able
to find someone to take it off your hands.

2022-02-14 Thread Frank Burkybile
I have been there before Ahmed and it can be frustrating! I have sold
several bikes online over the years and some of the best seem to get no
response, need to get posted several times before getting any interest,
then only to get tire kickers who only want to look. Other times, one post
will get a lot of same-day interest. Fortunate timing (luck?) seems to be
the key. Perhaps when folks start to get a little spring fever in a few
weeks, you will find someone who is a match.

[RBW] Re: For Sale: Heron Road 56.5cm $950

2020-08-31 Thread Frank Brose
This is beyond a really good deal. These are fantastic bikes. I had one.
Selling it was one of many stupid bicycle deals I've made. I'd suggest
anybody not familiar with Heron do a little homework. You'd be hard pressed
to find one in this condition as well. If I was in the market I'd pay that
for the frame alone and consider the parts a bonus. There's a reason you
don't see these for sale very often.

I've had 3 Atlantis' a 56, 58 and back to a 56. I just like the fit of a 56
better. I've been on a couple of 700 mile tours on mine and wouldn't think
twice about taking it across country on any roads. I ride it locally and
it's kinda like having a mountain bike with a generator hub and fenders. In
my opinion (which isn't worth much) they are one of the finest touring/all
around bikes made. I seriously doubt you'd be disappointed.

[RBW] FS 650b Son hub, Gran Bois rim, Lumotec IQ Cyo N Plus, 32 spoke wheel

2019-03-27 Thread Frank Brose
For Sale. Dyno front wheel. Professionally built. With Lumotec light. Very
good condition. Wheel has a few very light scrapes and scratches but the
braking surface is clean. Mileage is low as I generally rode my Riv
Atlantis when I was going to be in the dark.I really don't need two dyno
powered bikes. Best guess is less than 350 miles. Asking $315 net to me
I'll cover the shipping in the CONUS.

- Schmidt SON 20 R 32h silver front hub
- Grand Bois 650B 32h rims
- DT Swiss Competition DB spoke
- Lumotec IQ Cyo N Plus uncut wire with spades attachched. I can send some
xtra spades the buyer needs some and wants to cut the wires to their
preferred length.
- This setup has never been ridden in the rain.

For the record the Son 20 R is now referred to as a Delux. They were
renamed due to German law. Here's the story per Peter White and he would
know:

Schmidt changed the name of the SON20R to SON*delux*. Skip this paragraph
if you aren't interested in German bicycle lighting regulations. ;-) The
reason for the name change is a bit complicated. German law regulating
bicycle lighting is very strict. A dynamo powered headlight must reach a
certain brightness at a certain minimum speed. If you use a hub designed
for 20" wheels to make a wheel with a 700c rim, that wheel will be rotating
at a slower RPM at a given speed than the same hub in a 20" wheel, so the
hub's output will be lower. With a halogen bulb headlight, the light would
not reach the minimum required brightness until you were going faster than
the law requires. But with LED headlights such as the Schmidt Edelux, Busch
& Müller CYO and others, this isn't a problem. You can use a hub designed
for 20" wheels in a 700c wheel and the light will be very bright at low
speeds. Previously, it was illegal under German law for Schmidt to sell the
SON20R in Germany for use in 700c wheels. But the law has been changed,
provided the customer also buys a LED headlight. So now, Schmidt can sell
the SON20R for use with 700c rims, as long as the wheel is used to power
certain LED headlights that produce high output with very little power. So
there's no longer any need to call the hub a "SON20R", implying it's only
suitable for 20" and smaller wheels. Hence, the name change to SON*delux*.

Please contact me off list.
Thanks,
Frank

[RBW] Re: FS: Woolrich coat and pants-new photos added

2018-12-20 Thread Frank Brose
If I didn't have a heavy weight wool Jacket and pants in my closet I'd be
all over this. Your price is way beyond fair. Dirt cheap for the quality of
items you are offering up and whoever happens to be lucky enough to finally
end up with them will have some clothes that will last them a lifetime.
I've had mine 20 years and they will be around longer than I will. For
those that aren't familiar with what they are looking at and without going
into details this is high quality cold /wet/snow conditions outerwear. The
Mackinaw (jacket) or pants would cost more than the asking price a piece.
Good luck with the sale.

Re: [RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met

2018-03-12 Thread Frank Conway
Just finished Grant’s book. Makes a lot of since, since I’ve cut out many
carbs as of late. I did, however eat lots of fruit and found it just made me
more hungry so I cut most of that out and found it helped. The book has given
some new guidelines for me to try. It seems to me that it’s more about what
you don’t eat than what you do. I’ve had the flu for the past 4 days - also a
very effective way to lose weight but one I cannot recommend.

had 1.50 s on my Atlantis. But fast is beyond my reach now. I figure if I
can rde the same route in the same amount of time on RTP's vs 1.50 tires
with the same effort and super compfy it's all good..

Do it Max. You won't look back or be sorry. I have a 56 26" and love it but
I also love 650b wheels as I have a couple of bikes with those as well.
I'll be hard pressed to not sell mine and pony up the extra cash for a 650b
model. I'll wait for the geometry charts.

[RBW] Re: What is this and how do I get it off my stem?

2016-10-16 Thread Frank Brose
Busch aluminum polish. I've never seen anything on aluminum it won't take
care of. Not a wipe it on,wipe it off deal but with a little elbow grease
you can restore just about any stem to new like condition.

Frank

[RBW] Re: A plug to buy something from Rivendell Bicycle Works: A Nitto F-15 rack

2016-09-23 Thread Frank Brose
I have one with the Sackville bag on my Atlantis. Been on a 500 mile tour,
down rough ,rutty dirt roads and all points in between. I love it. Actually
is larger than the pictures would lead you to believe. I have an elastic
cord run through the top loops to lash more things that I probably don't
need on top. I throw my phone in a side pocket or the zipper pocket inside.
It'll hold a rain jacket long sleeve t shirt, wallet, spare tube, multi
tool, and has room for a fair amount more. Wasn't sure I'd like it at
first but boy was I wrong. If I decide to go to a bigger bag on the
Atlantis this setup gets moved to a different bike.
Cheers,
Frank
