Re: [RBW] Re: FS: QuickBeam 58 cm

2023-08-25 Thread Jason Zakaras
And as it is Friday and I took an awesome joyride around the new area, I am
calling it quits on calling it quits for this bike. I can say it is now
sold, as you all sold me on keeping it. My plan is to keep riding it more
now that I'm more confident with the climbs in the immediate area and
if/when I put on the pass n stow rack and start using it for camping, I'm
hoping to either: change the front chainring to 40t vs 48 and/or find a
16/19 DOS for the rear. That should give me all that I need for the
terrain. For some reason the climbing isn't as bad as I initially assumed
on the 48-18 and I'll just use the bombora when I'm pulling the baby.

Im super surprised this didn't sell, glad now that I've made my mind, but a
head scratcher for sure.

Glad to get to know you all more, it's always a good learning opportunity.

Cheers,

Jason a proud old owner of a new old Quickbeam

[RBW] Re: Single Speed (QB/SO/RU..) Questions

2023-08-25 Thread Jason Zakaras
As it stands I'm sticking to someone can buy it for 1750 to me and figure
out a way to get it. I'd help coordinate with a bike shop. Not planning
on dropping the price any further... although its funny it sat for a few
weeks at 1800 with nothing and then dropped 50 bucks and its getting eyes.
I appreciate the publicity for a small investment. Honestly I don't think
the bike would sell for 2k shipped so call it 1750 and your still likely to
pay 50-60 bucks to have it boxed then 100-150 to ship, and you're at around
2k so I dont think the price is too far reduced that I'm giving it
away. Although its a very nice bike and has a ton of bling Paul bits and
some Easter egg brass bits throughout.

That said, I f it doesn't sell today (as I posted earlier in the week on
Crust Trader) I'm going to start buying up nice bits to change the gearing
to give some variations in the way it rides. I'll likely replace the crank
to either a double 32/40 or a 1x likely 40 and then put a dos on the rear
still chewing on that but likely a 17/19 oor if anyones holding a 16/19
I'd enjoy talking.

Thanks for all the great discussion, the next topic is, toe overlap, that's
the other reason this bike has some room for improvement...

Re: [RBW] Single Speed (QB/SO/RU..) Questions

2023-08-24 Thread Jason Zakaras
Thanks for the excellent information and antidotes Patrick and David... I
appreciate the details and after crunching some numbers, it might be a good
plan to flip my 48t chainring to a 40 and feel the difference from the
current 74" to a more dialed back 61". Then, if I need more or less I can
pick up a different cog or play from there. I was debating back and forth
to drop to either my options of 40 or 36 and felt like 36 made more sense
but I think I might find a better feel with a 40 and not cut back so far
that it takes a lot to bring it closer... smaller tweaks vs giant swings
maybe? a 36t would put me at mid 55" which might be good but I could make
more tweaks with the 40t and still have the speed that I do enjoy.

Thanks again, I am fully aware that there is a bunch of value I'd be
walking away from, but more importantly I absolutely love this Riv out of
the entire lineup and if there were one LOTR races I loved the most it's
the Ents (and that matters, to me)

[RBW] Single Speed (QB/SO/RU..) Questions

2023-08-24 Thread Jason Zakaras
So as its been posted, I'm selling my Quickbeam, but even with "too low"
prices, its still not moving. I also have options to figured out how to
tow my newest addition and I can make space/have the space so who cares.
The big concern for me is riding it and I don't find myself jumping on it
as often as I'd like. Partially due to the epic mtn bike scene immediately
around me and my newly rebuilt bombora that I absolutely love. That said,
It would be fun to hit the trails on a QB and I have a pass rack and
some bags I'd like to use to do some camping with my twin boys (7) and the
SS would be a nice way to enjoy the trip out to the woods with them.

The question I pose is what gear options do you all enjoy. I've dug into
the internets and I'm sure there is a post or 100 on this here already but
I figured with the upcoming roduno and its many possibilities, this might
be a fun chat to dig into.

I'm currently at 48-18 and its great climbing around rural gravel roads in
the midwest but now I'm in steeper hills its a bear-cat.

Indeed, super clean, it was a gem when I picked it up from you Dylan! I
just took a small rip on it and it just glides. While I think the Rene
Herse crank looks brilliant, the 48t is just too stout to have much fun for
me now. I'm kicking myself for getting rid of the 40/32 crank and the
17/19 dos... doh!

If it doesn't sell I think I'm going to change out the chainring to 36t and
maybe put a 17/19 dos on it and see if I can have a smile again. I can put
my pull trailer adapter on the bombora and pull the lil one with that too.
 hm apostasy!

Patrick, they are wolf tooth's silicone grips, I believe the Karv maybe
fatpaw. I recently switched all my mtbs over to them and they are lovely.
Its a nice touch when you're feeling fatigued and can drop down into a
cozy bed for yer hands. I highly recommend them.

And yep, the bike market has gone back to normal, bikes don't appreciate in
value (gasp) and new bikes won't sell out immediately. I for one am
thrilled about this, its kinda adds to the "not going to ride my bike and
get it dirty" vibe, in my opinion.

This bike has been rode well but its in great shape, I commute to work from
it and work from home so mostly casual rides around the rural parts. The
new landscape I'm in begs for different gearing and my new Baby begs for a
bike I can pull her in with the burly trailer so that's part of the
selling rational. Also, I have 5 kids and 4 ride plus my wife's couple o
bikes and mine, the gearage could use some weight loss.

thanks for the catch Billiam, its been on and off so I forgot to check the
sweet deets, for your consideration:
A quick beam is a single speed bike that you might want to consider making
into a multiple geared single speed with a dos freewheel and double up
front, sorry no hangers like these new fangled "single speed" wanna be
bikes.
made in Japan.

polished everything…

paul rear flip/flop hub with surly free and fixed 18t on both sides, front
hub is polished shutter precision and the rims are polished velocity quill
700c with ultradynamico rubber rose/cava combo

trp brake levers- polished silver w/ gum hoods , brooks tape/saddle b17 in
honey, 600 towel rack, some nice brass spacers and brass bell.

paul tall and handsome seatpost again polished

paul neo retro brakes and touring canti in rear for that extra nice look
and feel

rene herse crank 171 48t chainring

edulux lamp that is hung with a nitro hanger, it was added later to the fork

the pedals, bag, and bottle holders do not convey with the sale.

Not sure your time frame of how many spacers you need but I’ve got a bunch
I got from Analog that I didn’t use and would be happy to ship to you for
the cost of shipping. That said they are packed and I move to AR from NE
this week and wouldn’t be able to ship for about 2 weeks…

[RBW] Re: MINT MUSA 58cm "Disc" Hunqapillar Waterford x D Paint

2023-05-22 Thread Jason Zakaras
Im unfortunately unaware of that cost. I confirmed with Walt that he did
the work, which he was very familiar with, but I didn't ask the cost. I
know that he is not a cheap option for fabrication and modifications... I
purchased the bike this way from the prior owner, I then stripped the bike
down and had it repainted by Rick, in the process purchased all the said
parts for it and now that its done, need to move on with the project. If
y'all can remind me not to buy any more bikes and pour buckets of cash all
over them that would be massively helpful lol.

[RBW] Re: wtb: 58cm quickbeam

2023-02-24 Thread Jason Zakaras
You are correct, Bill, that I have owned both QB and SO. However the SO
was a 56cm and I could never really dial it in to my liking and when I came
close, the aesthetic was off, to me. I ended up selling the SO, but
maintained the wheelset as they were brand new and I could potentially use
the with my qb. but I find that the current QB wheelset is perfect and I
don't anticipate using the second set as a replacement, there is just too
much similarity. Now I'm also sitting on a credit for waltworks and don't
have the need as it was for a fork for my evasion lite, which I have since
sold. I was thinking I would have Walt add s couplers to a bike that
could be used for my packraft adventures. A bike like the QB or Simple One
would be ideal so I can use the wheels and other parts I already have handy
and have a unique and ideal tool for said adventures.

This being said, I should probably sell the brand new Hands on Wheels, Rich
built 700c atlas wheels with Phil track hubs and 16/19 dos with gravel king
rubber and see if I can't find someone to buy the 275.00 credit for like
$150.00 and just deal with a little more tear down when I load my bike on
my raft.

If anyone is interested in either, let me know... or hurry and sell me a 58
QB not a super fan of the simple one, to me graphics, manufacture
location, head badge and name of said bike is important to me.

Cheers,

Jason

Since the Quickbeam has a nice, built-in cable hanger at the rear

had wide profile brakes, like the neo-retro, both front and rear on my
Quickbeam (and will again when I finish rebuilding it) and never had heel
clearance problems. I do have another bike where I needed to use the
touring on the rear with the neo retro on the front.

 John,

The Paul Minomotos are actually short-pull calipers, so you can use
the same short-pull levers that you would use with the
 touring/neo-retro
cantilevers. The Paul Motolites are the ones that use long-pull
 levers.

the front as seen on this Rock Lobster build over on The Radivist.

 https://theradavist.com/cyclofunk-single-speed-rock-lobster-cyclocross-kyle-kelley/

The only problem with that is, I'll have to get two pairs of brake
levels, one short pull and one long pull. I'm planning on using
 Mark/noodle
drop bars, so the Tektro R340 and RL520 brake levers are at reasonably
 priced at $30/pair.

 Any suggestions are appreciated,

[RBW] Swift Jr. Rangers coyote & Dyad SS "DOS" wheelset

2022-12-12 Thread Jason Zakaras
I have these two listed at crust but discounted pricing here as I have yet
to add any real value to this community and feel shameful for constantly
plugging my overstock gear. Please DM me with questions or comments.

FS: Hands on Wheels (Rich @ Rivendell) built wheelset: $775.00

https://crustbikes.com/a/shopicial/topics/148822

700c Velocity Dyad rims

120 rear Phil (polished) free/fixed hub w/ White industry DOS 16/19t free
wheel PLUS non installed never used NOS white industries 20/22t DOS free
wheel

100 front Phil hub (polished)

gravel king rubber in grey/blue color

wheelset was installed on my QuickBeam for ~ 30 miles but replaced when I
sold my Simple One frame and kept the old wheelset.

&&

FS: new never used Jr. Ranger Pannier Set - coyote -

https://crustbikes.com/a/shopicial/topics/148819

I have too many bags so I’m going to just use my beat up old otlieb
panniers and let these go... My loss your gain.

300.00

The Jr. Ranger Pannier Set is a duo of lightweight, low profile bicycle
panniers that were designed with gravel riding and remote bicycle touring
in mind. With the Jr. Ranger Pannier Set, it’s more simple than ever to
cover more territory and soak in the goodness of long days on the bicycle.

The Jr. Ranger Pannier Set is made out of recycled polyester and contains
roughly 28 plastic bottles rescued from polluted rivers.

Thanks for looking feel free to send offers.

Re: [RBW] Bombadil and Hunqapillar origins: The definitive thread

2022-12-12 Thread Jason Zakaras
I've often wondered what made the Hunq the "less expensive Bombadil" given
the tubing being as Grant calls "the most expensive tubes around". I'm
assuming it was based on it being MIT and the Bomba being a MUSA frame? IF
so, were they equally priced once the Hunq moved to MUSA Waterford, why/why
not? I figured it was something similar to the manufacturing locations of
the Quickbeam/SimpleOne with the exception that those two have identical
geometry and the Hunq/Bomba are different. I'm only asking because its
often referred here as the cheaper bomba, but I was of the understanding it
was more like the 700c bike (hunq) and the bomba was the 650b earlier
option.

Probably a messy way to ask but to clean it up, can anyone tell me if the
Hunq was actually that much cheaper once it was moved to Wisconsin and also
if the tubing stayed the same once it was manufactured in the US?

thanks! Love these two bikes and this thread!

[RBW] Re: How you choose 2 Rivendells?

2022-12-10 Thread Jason Zakaras
Hi Masa! Yes lots of fun and fun yet to be had! Here is a link to the two
bikes:

 https://flickr.com/photos/197124752@N07/shares/C33fDW3gf1

(still learning how to upload photos here, or use my iPhone to add to
conversations)

My QB is set up 48-18 free/fixed with a Paul flip flop hub and a SP7
polished front hub laced to polished velocity rims and 700cx42 Cava/Rose
ultradynamico rubber. The crank is Rene Herse SS 171mm crank arm, Paul T
Seatpost, and matching brooks honey saddle with the bar tap. Bars are 600
Towel Rack that are absolutely lovely. The brakes are Paul Cantis using
the cx method of mixing the neos with the touring Cantis. funky monkey on
the front for some added braking bling power. I love this bike its been
used for 150 mile races to causal family riding. I could see myself
touring with it, but like having it clean and rack free to maintain a light
and fast quick, quickbeam

The Hunq is what I call my Disc-o-pHunqapillar, it is a MUSA Waterford Hunq
that has been updated by Waltworks to have disc brakes added, which I think
is a great feature for a heavy touring bike, certainly not critical, but I
like it, especially when I have my twins linked to the back in their burley
trailer. It is currently under construction:
Painting currently pending at D to be the grey/kidneybean/lined lugs
which I think really shines as a classic riv look and fun to have an OG
painting the OG hunq once more
Bars will be 630 silver towel racks with grey newbaums and maroon Oury
grips, black and silver drilled TRP levers
black cable housing with brass ferrels and brass barrel adjusters
rear brake will be the DISC-o part of the pHunq. I'll have a polished Paul
Klamper short pull here, the front will be polished silver Paul Neo-canti
brakes (going to keep it Canti up front) I think this will give me ultimate
stopping power and a cool/funky (phunqE) look to this bike
combo brass/silver headset spacers / polished funky monkey front
1x White industries crank 38t black chainring, silver crank, 12 Spd rear
cassette
black hubs front/rear with shutter precision dyno laced to velocity
cliffhanger with 700c Ultradynamico MARZ rubber
I have marks hub area rack for panniers and a mini Nitto campee with a sine
wave beacon lamp ready for bags and packing not sure if I'll swap out for a
silver or black pass and stow 5 rail rack instead? Not sure for the rear
rack at the moment thoughts?
Nitto Jaguar Seatpost, Black/copper Ti brooks Seatpost to finish it off.
I'll probably start a build thread once I get the Frame/fork back from
Rick. Stoked for sure!

Cheers,

Jason

2022-12-09 Thread Jason Zakaras
Another vote for the Bombadil. Just to add content around a one off
production from Riv, I spoke to the good folks at Rivendell a bit this year
and they are not doing any customs or special orders currently, I wanted a
56cm Bombadil, they said maybe next year (like fall 2023) if at all.
Perhaps others have a better tie in there, but for me, I'm stuck waiting
and watching for someone to grace me with my favorite bike and LOTR name of
all time.

[RBW] Re: What's Good - Wide-ish/flared drops edition...

2022-12-09 Thread Jason Zakaras
Ben, I'm also in Omaha and a big fan of the crust towel rack. I have a 600
on my 58cm quick beam and am holding a 630 for my 58cm hunq that is
currently being painted. If you want to hold the 630 or ride the QB to
check the feels I'd be down to meet.

I had the Nitto noodles and the flares on the Towel Rack rey
help me get into a good comfortable but not overly relaxed position. I've
rode them on 150 mile rides around here on the gravel and are quiet easily
the nicest cockpit set-up I've used. Another nice option is the Ritchie
VentureMax, I had the carbon bars on my bombora but swapped them out for
towel racks, I find there are more hand placement options with the TR.

Cheers!

Thanks Eric! I failed to list in the items above but I'm also selling my
new, unused/assembled Marks Front Area Rack (photo at crust link) for
200.00 I'm eating the 21.00 plus taxes hopefully that's reasonable for
someone to pick it up. Again, flexible on most of the prices, just silly
how things collect, and sillier the things I've sold off and am now
searching for, haha.

PS. IF there is a tips sheet on how to use this page and communicate via an
iPhone I'd love to read it. I always need to open my computer which isn't
always available. I'd love to chime in more frequently to the Riv

[RBW] Re: FS: 56cm SimpleOne

2022-11-03 Thread Jason Zakaras
Sorry for the confusion (if there is any) I am trying to make this bike as
cost effective as possible since I dumped a ton of resources into it and
realize not everyone wants to spend a bunch of money on a single speed...
So here is the new build link
(https://crustbikes.com/a/shopicial/topics/144421) I've posted it on crust
as its easier for me to add the content and photos... Im struggling
navigating and communicating on this group with my iPhone :). Note there
isn't a front brake and the crank has been changed to a silver double 30/40
so your really getting a 4 speeder lol!

Im asking 1350 as shown, I have a newly built 700c dyad wheelset built by
rich for this bike with a 16/19 dos freehub that I'd sell for 700.00 I
think I paid about 850 just the other day so a deal to you but would be OK
keeping them too.

Please email me if you have any questions, I think its a great bike and a
solid build for the money!

Cheers

Jason

Re: Re: [RBW] Bikes For Sale: Craigslist, ebay, etc. Fall 2022 edition

2022-10-20 Thread Jason Zakaras
Sure is! I'm actually working on a different cockpit area, Shimano bb,
possibly a headset change out, and seatpost/saddle combo to bring the price
down. It's too overbuilt for a simpleone, and I've out priced it with all
the fancy bits. It really needed new life pumped into it with the paint,
guess I overstoked myself with the build. I just purchased a hunqapillar
and quickbeam so the SO needs to go as baby #5 is due any day now and my
n+1 is 1 too heavy...

I should have a more reasonable complete built up by next week. FYI the
light and rack are not included :)

And as mentioned in my FS post, yes I'm in Omaha

cheers,

Jason

[RBW] Re: FS: 56cm SimpleOne

2022-10-18 Thread Jason Zakaras
Thanks for posting that Matt. Yes, these are the magic-components dango
bros carriers. They are the sold out polished ones and really look great,
they work really good and wish they had them in stock when I was building
my QB up but ended up using the moon units for that build (also fantastic)

Per the original post, I'd be willing to take offers for this, especially
if someone wanted to go without the wheelset or other items. Just snagged
the recent Ebay 58cm hunqapillar so I'm super motivated to sell this bike
to make room and justify it with my lovely wife (who is delivering our 5th
child this month) so yeah motivated to say the least.

cheers!

[RBW] FS: 56cm SimpleOne

2022-10-17 Thread Jason Zakaras
A quick explanation of what's going on here:

I purchased this bike a year ago and decided to polish it up to new with
some classy bits and bobs while also recruiting Rick @ D to do a crimson
& cream fully accented paint job. In the process I stumbled upon a very
nice 58cm Quickbeam and I feel that while the renovated bike looks amazing,
doesn't get the attention it deserves based on the way the QB is set up for
the riding I do around my house Everything has been professionally
updated and all the parts are new. I've put on about 40 miles since it's
been rebuilt and I think it really turned out lovely. As with many bikes,
I feel that the price is appropriate (I'm taking a haircut on the bike from
what I've put into it) but also would be flexible on it as I'd be willing
to keep anything on it, especially the newly built wheelset, to bring your
cost down. please connect with me privately if interested.

[RBW] Re: Roaduno substitute for a while...

2022-09-17 Thread Jason Zakaras
sorry for the thread hack... if you could stab again or perhaps another
double crankset quickbeamer could answer: what bottom bracket would this
run? I have a simple one running 48-18 and I have a nice skf 107 jis and
would like to move it over to my double 32/42-19/17 and unfortunately don't
know the laws of bicycles enough to understand how things pair. the current
58cm quick beam is running great other than a much needed bb upgrade.
thanks!

To resume, the new lightning bolt ss is a stunner, can't wait for a
review

I had been searching for quite a while for a single speed that enabled
some derailer-less gear flexibility. On one hand I searched for a 58cm
Quickbeam or SimpleONE. On the other hand I was/am waiting on the
RoadUNO. I was/am a huge fan of Rivendells rear dropouts with the angle
that allows a significant gear change while maintaining brake adjustment.

In an absolutely perfect world, my Size Large singlespeed would also
have been 650B (for fat tires and no TCO). While I'm sitting here in
fantasy-land, I also would have waved my magic wand to have the bike be
belt-compatible, and would allow brakes, but have a discreet way to NOT
 run
 brakes.

Over the last 18 months or so, I've been working with placeholders for
these things. I bought a Crust Michigan Man right when they were released
and set it up as a strictly 1-speed fixie in my office in Wayne County,
Michigan. Will at Riv also has a Michigan Man. I also managed to acquire
a 58cm Quickbeam, and that is now in my garage as a 8-speed single speed.
I slowly acquired some of the parts for a 650B custom, including a pair of
Rivendell dropouts. I even had preliminary conversations with a local
builder, and have a tentative spot on his enormous waiting list.

Then, totally by surprise, a new contender appeared. Crust released a
new variant of their single speed Lightning Bolt. It's 650B, with
clearance for 48mm tires and contemporary Randonneur geometry. It's
belt-compatible and has removable cantilever posts and cable guides. It's
almost exactly what my custom would have been except for the Riv-style
 ends.

It's 2022, and the lesson we've all learned is that if the thing you
want is available, you buy it, because it may never be available again.
So, I went ahead and bought it, and the frame should arrive today. I'm
 pretty excited.

Whether or not my new Crust will get replaced by a RoadUNO next year
remains to be seen. Will's email updates (plus simple geometry) make it
pretty clear to me that the RoadUNO will not have Riv ends. It'll have
some other svelte track ends, so easy gear changes with a rear brake won't
be part of the feature list, it seems. I'm still paying very close
attention, but the itch is getting scratched today.

2022-08-23 Thread Jason Zakaras
perhaps a dumber question, but can someone educate me on this "Riv
Mountain" is it a semi custom or an earlier model like the road standard?
I love it either way. Also cheers to the Omaha folk, I'm out here just

[RBW] hunqapillar history

2022-08-15 Thread Jason Zakaras
I've been searching around to try to find some of the historical info on
the Hunqs and the various MUSA/MIT variants. Does anyone know *roughly*
the release dates of the hunqapillars, batch quantities, and locations of
production? I'm mostly interested in the MUSA variant, were there multiple
paint options from Waterford or just green/cream and what order these were
produced in comparison to the MIT hunqs...

I appreciate the help linking the history together!

Cheers,

Jason

Thanks everyone! I have identical twin boys so there is actually two
helpers wrenching a way, just never captured the "teamwork". I love that
they enjoy riding as much as they enjoy wrenching, its so fun sharing the
love with them! (Ford & Duke)

The color is unknown to me, I asked Rick Stephanit (D) to do a classic
Burgundy color with cream accents, he ran with it and I think, nailed it.

Thanks for all the kind words, I've really enjoyed gleaning an education on
all things Riv here on the forum.

figured I'd try my luck reaching out to ya'll... I'm hoping this works for
me as much as it did for Frodo:

*Ho! Tom (56cm) Bombadil, Tom Bombadillo!*
*By water, wood and hill, by the reed and willow,*
*By fire, sun and moon, harken now and hear us!*
*Come, Tom (56cm) Bombadil, for our need is near us!*

I'd also consider a 58cm Hunq if available. I paired back my bikes and now
reflecting back on the sell of my crust evasion, I will need a stout
touring rig.

Cheers and many thanks!

Jason

I'm willing to take offers, so if you really want it, shoot me an
offer. I will not break up main parts of the bike
(drivetrain/wheels/frame/cockpit), but will gladly remove racks cages, etc
 for a different price.

[RBW] WTB 59cm Atlantis

2022-06-15 Thread Jason Zakaras
Hello! I missed out on the recent presale of the Atlantis and figured I'd
reach out to see if there are any leads or folks here that have one they
are willing to sell. I'm open to any year, preferably a frame/fork only
but might consider a complete. I'm in Nebraska...

Thanks for your help!

Jason

[RBW] Riv SimpleOne Color/Cream Headtube change Question

2022-01-27 Thread Jason Zakaras
Hi All, I'm new here, **Shout out to any Riv folks in Omaha. Anyway, I
have been digging into the Riv Blog history and haven't been able to find
the content surrounding the rational behind the changes to the simpleone...
Initially the description states it would be a "fancier paint" with cream
headtube and also a dark red color, then slime green with cream accents,
then it was released entirely in dark "slime" green. Does anyone here have
any further insight on the changes? I am working on a restoration project
of a SimpleOne and have chosen to go with the prototype Burgundy color with
cream head tube and fork accents. I am looking forward to it being what
may have been the OG intent for the color way of this bike.

Thoughts?
