For clarification, the picture of the frame is of it mocked up with some narrow tires and Boscos. I wasnt paying attention and thought it was a picture with wider tires. Still with Boscos but looks a little more like the anticipated final build. I'm intrigued by these. Hopefully they'll have them at Rivelo where I can check them out before purchasing. I have a pair of large green ones that I've had for probably 10yrs that I wear from time to time. I hate the look and fit but they do work. Riv shorts are still my all-time favorite cycling shorts. I hate the cut and wish they were less billowy but they are so perfect for long rambles on hot days. I've never been a fan of flip flops because of the toe piece. It bothered me at first on the BR but really, that lasted for about 5 minutes into my first 15 minute walk in them. I just did a 40 mile ride in them today and yet again they were perfect. I will now where them to go get coffee and run some errands. Not to derail things but just want to put in a plug for MUSA shorts. I have 2 pair that are both about 10yrs old and they remain the most comfortable cycling shorts I own. I purchased a pair of Chacos years ago and never liked them for cycling or even walking. They were heavy and just not comfortable. I tried to like the basic Tevas like Grant has used for years and while i find them fine for walking, never liked them for cycling. I purchased a pair of Bedrock Cairns, the 3D model and pretty quickly took to them. I've been wearing them all summer for everything. Did multiple hikes in them, the longest being 8 miles. The longest ride I did in them was 70 miles over mixed terrain. They not great on overgrown singletrack for obvious reasons. I purchased a second pair but went for the basic Cairn with the thin sole to take on vacation. Turns out I love those even more. I can see how they're not for everyone but they certainly work for me. I'll be bummed when the weather starts to turn here and I have to put them away. [RBW] WTB frame--58 Appa or 59 Atlantis (MIT).
So I've got the itch to put a Riv back together. Yesterday I took a Chev for a ride and while not set-up quite how I like, it was great. The 58 Appa is my ideal frame although it appears that ship has sailed. RBW will apparently have 59 Atlanti back in stock in Sept so I may just go that route. Still, I figured I'd put this out there. Just adding an update to this thread. A couple of things. Through the spring I just continued to ramble in my Vans and 510 Aescents. Turns out 510 is making the Aescent again although I refrained from getting a pair. I was very curious about Bedrock Sandals and picked up a pair a while back at REI with my dividend. I didn't get around to using them until about 3 weeks ago. I gotta say, I absolutely love them! I used them the other day on a 44 mile ride in the heat and they were a pleasure. I'm using the Cairn 3D model. I've also put quite a bit of time in them walking. I may even try a pair of the basic Cairns as I think the thinner sole might be better for cycling. As for pedals. I've been using VP Thin Gripsters for years, since RBW first started selling them. I'm going to pick up a pair of Deity pedals, Black Kats I think, later today. I was reading about them on the Analog site and it makes sense that an even bigger pedal makes sense. [RBW] Re: Crust Towel Rack Drops on Your Riv? Which stem are you using?
I'm using a 64cm wide Towel Rack on my Crust Evasion with a 7cm stem. The TT for my Evasion is 60cm (XL) and it feels about right for rambling. If I were using the bike as a dedicated mountain bike, or just riding singletrack more frequently, I'd consider using a Crust 40cm LD stem with the bars to get them up higher and for riding in the drops more frequently. I've had the bars on my bike about 2 weeks and they'yre great, feel totally normal. So I sold off my Ogre and am now down to my Evasion and Big Dummy. I ended up mounting the Crust Towel Rack on my Evasion. So far so good. As for getting an Atlantis? I think I've ruled out a Romanceur. Still dreaming about an Atlantis and may end up going for it but for now I'm going to keep the quiver at 2. That's what I've wanted for a long time. The BD will eventually go. The Crust really is a super capable all-rounder and I may invest in a dyno hub for it. I have a Fab's Chest arriving today. For now the Atlantis will go on the back burner. [RBW] MIT Atlantis with drops?
Ok, so I'm giving some serious thought to going back down the RBW rabbit hole again (previously had a AHH, Rambouillet and QB). I really like the MIT Atlantis. Last year I sold my CC and LHT and have put together a Crust Evasion which is an absolutely awesome bike. I'll be selling off my Ogre soon and, most likely my Big Dummy. I want to get down to 2 nice and distinct bikes. I got a silver Crust Towel rack on order and will likely build a bike around them. That's a good way to do it, right? I also have a Fab's Chest coming. Anyway, I'm curious about the MIT Atlantis with drops and how it rides on dirt roads. I imagine it's great. There's some aesthetically incongruent about drops on a bike with such a long wheel base, but how does it actually feel? Any down sides? The thing I like about the Atlantis is that it's easily rackable and fenderable. It would likely go into service as my daily driver. I'm also giving some serious thought to a Romanceur. I know, it sounds like I'm going full Benedict, but believe me, I started down this road years ago and we're just crossing paths at this moment. So for years my go to shoes for rambling around with platform pedals have been Vans or Sambas. I've used some other shoes from time to time--Five Ten Ascents and the Patagonia Bagley. The Ascents have been my favorite but they've gone out of production. I generally use the VP Thin Gripsters or whatever they're called that Riv sells. [RBW] 60cm LHT for sale.
Ok. Ok. Ok. I know, a Surly. But it's an LHT and pretty much Riv'd out--48cm Nitto Noodles, Silver Shifters, Crystal Fellows Post, Sugino Cranks. Also has Paul Brakes. Wheels are handbuilt Mavic a719s on XT hubs, 36h front and back.Everything is in great shape. Bike has never been crashed. No dents or dings, just standard beausage for a bike purchased in 2011. It's a fantastic all-road bike and, of course, a superb touring machine. No shimmy with a load, even with rear panniers only. Fork has braze-ons for fenders and racks but not the mounts on the crown for Surly's 8-pack and 24-pack racks. No pedals. What the hell, I'll throw in the saddle--B17. Racks are not included and not for sale.Price is $1000, firm. Willing to ship but buyer pays for packaging and shipping. I know a new LHT doesn't cost much more but it's not spec'd like this. What if I choose to just skip the FD and "manually" shift to the lower gear when I need it? You think there's much chance of the chain coming off? Should I go with a narrow wide ring. On my CC I run a 1x9 drivetrain with an old XT derailleur and a narrow wide ring up front with no issues. That's great. My daughter never really took to the balance bike. We were out one day and a neighbor and I started talking bikes and he just gave us a kids bike. His daughter had outgrown it. My daughter was so excited about the bike that she made me take her to the schoolyard up the street and basically just started riding. It was so weird. That was back in Sept after she turned 4. Just last week we rode to and from daycare. It's 2 miles each way. She was a champ. I'm super looking forward to riding with her more this summer. But that day she first rode her bike. [RBW] Sugino Wide/Low Double FD?
I know a lot of you are running Sugino and Silver Wide/Low Doubles but which FD are you using? I'll be using Silver BE shifters with an 8spd cassette. I've had the cranks laying around for ages and want to put them on my LHT where they'll make a lot of sense. Just not sure about which FD. Well aware of Grant's thoughts on the subject but you know, one can dream. Back in 06 when I dove in to the Riv aesthetic, who could have ever imagined a non-lugged Riv. When I ride my LHT I feel adequately braked with Paul Cantis and when I ride my Ogre I feel adequately braked with my Avids. I've had my Big Dummy for 6 years and outside of a broken spoke, haven't had any problems with the wheels. With my LHT I've had to replace both rims due to wear. [RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!
It's been a few years since I sold off my AHH and I gotta say, I haven't really missed it. I know it sounds crazy, even blasphemous, but I just like my LHT more. From time to time, I've wonder about the Atlantis but it's just more than I'm willing to spend on a bike when I like my LHT so much. I pulled back from obsessively tracking all things Riv but when I'd check I didn't find much of a draw to the newer bikes with their extra-long chain stays. Lately I've been more curious and enjoyed checking out some of the Appalosa, Clem and Chev builds. As for the new Atlantis... I gotta say, I'm intrigued. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how people build them up. I've whittled the quiver down a bit to just 4 Surlys--Ogre, Big Dummy, LHT and Cross Check. I'm actually going to be selling the CC soon. I've had it for 12yrs but it's just not a style of bike I'm into. Furthermore, I recently put a VO Cigne Stem with Cowchippers on my Ogre and am absolutely loving it as my all-road machine. My Big Dummy (talk about long chain-stays) has been my go to bike since finally getting a bike barn installed in the backyard (no more carrying it up from the basement!). Anyway, who knows what will happen or what the final price will be but I could actually see getting one of these new Atlantis's (Atlanti?). Seems like it would be a great bike for rambling around the back roads of the Mt Hood NF. I love that they're tentatively keeping it the same color. Yes, quite wide. If you're putting them on a mountain bike 46s would be fine. For a lot of time on the road, I'd definitely go narrower. I had the Cowchippers, 46cm, on my Vaya a while back and never really liked the way they felt on that bike. They seemed too wide. Like wider than the 48cm Noodles on my LHT. I did like the way they felt in the drops on descents. I was also entertaining thoughts of that bike being a go fast all road machine. Something about that bike ultimately never felt right and I sold it. I think the Cowchippers will work well on the Ogre. If this works well I could see going to the next lever and setting it up with a Crust Towel Rack, a 66cm wide drop bar. I just ordered 1x10 Gevenalle shifters. They'll work with my current gear. I've wanted a drop-bar large volume tire bike for a long time and I'm hoping this will all come together nicely and satisfy that desire. I'll post it up once it's done. [RBW] 1x10 with BE or Gevenalle?
Haven't chimed in here in a long long time. Curious what folks think. I'm a longtime fan of BE shifters so quite familiar with them. I'm getting ready to convert my Surly Ogre from a Jones Bar to a Cowchipper with a 70mm VO Cigne Stem. I'm running a 10spd Shimano SLX derailer. I'm leaning toward Gevenalle but curious what folks thoughts and experience are with them. I like the Jones bars well enough but really want to try the Cowchippers on the Ogre. The stem gets them in the right place with what should be appropriate extension. I spend more time on dirt roads on this bike than technical singletrack so it should be fine. This set-up seems takes a leap of faith as the steerer will be cut down to an otherwise useless length for me. I'm hopeful this set-up will work for me. If not... well, looks like I'll be purchasing a new fork. Don't let anyone tell you threaded steerer tubes and quill stems don't have their place. Feel free to contact me if you happen to have some Gevenalle shifters for sale (long pull, 10x1, Shimano DynaShift). But the Sugarloaf looks pretty sweet too. A little more exciting than my practical and dependable Ortliebs. Sell the Bombadil and Sequoia. A few years back I sold off the last of my Rivs, an AHH to make room for and fund a mountain bike. I don't regret that move. This may sound crazy, but my LHT was the bike I wish my AHH was. I had previously sold off my Rambouilet and Quickbeam. About a year before I sold the Riv I had purchased a Salsa Vaya with the intention of that being a replacement for the AHH and LHT. It just never worked out that way. I really wanted to like the Salsa with it's disc brakes and all but it just never felt right. It's now in the process of being sold. My point is, if you're really not in love with or using the bikes, move them on to someone else and make room for the bike you want. Once my Vaya is sold I'll likely pick-up a 26" wheeled 60cm LHT. Sure there's redundancy with my current LHT but I always regret not getting that in the first place. I've threatened to build one up for years. I have most of the parts laying around with the exception of rims. I was looking at the Alppa's for a second but I'm in-between sizing. I know the LHT will work. I also thought about the Crust Bikes Romanceur (Sp?) but again, why not just stick with what works, the LHT. And finally, I'm fine with cantis for 90% of my riding. Besides, I'll likely be selling my Krampus frame later in the year and that combined with left over funds from the Vaya sale should allow me to pick-up a new Surly Ogre frame for all my dirt road disc brake needs. But yeah, sell the Bomba and Sequoia and get the bike you want. The Hilsen was awesome but it shimmied at speed and with a load. Furthermore, I like the stopping power of cantis over Silver brakes, especially with a load or off-road. I recently put a Paul brake on the front and am kicking myself for waiting so long. I'll eventually get a Paul for the rear and for my CC. The other bikes are my Krampus which I really haven't ridden much this year. On the days where I could go mountain bike, I just felt like going dirt road rambling. Just a little less stressful and overall better for my head if that makes sense. I also have a Salsa Vaya which I really want to like but the reality is I don't. I'm not anti disc brakes but I just prefer cantis and the set-up on my 10yr old CC. In fact, I'm thinking of selling the Vaya and getting a second CC (geared). My Joshua Bryan randonneur is disassembled in the basement and I need to work towards selling the frame. The last randonneuring event I did was the Cascade 1200k and I don't see myself doing riding like that anymore. Hell, I'd be more likely to race cross before I randonneured again. Look for Babyshoe Pass. I can't remember what road it's on but there's a long stretch of that on both sides of the summit that is gravel and it can take you towards Packwood. Are you coming up here this summer? [RBW] Re: Gifford Pinchot NF
I've done a fair amount of riding and bike camping in the GPNF and use the FS map. It's fine. I'm not sure how much you've ridden there but try to incorporate Babyshoe Pass and Lake Takhlakh. Some pictures from a little 3 day trip a friend and I did a few years back. I've cruised through there on two other longer trips. It's also pretty easy to incorporate a trip into Mt Rainier NP. Not to complicate things but are you sure you don't want to head in the other direction, like into the Mt Hood or Gifford Pinchot NF. There are miles and miles of quiet roads, paved and dirt, with little traffic and outstanding views.And the weather is likely to be better.
