The inside shelf is a weird Shimano lock-in thing and it can be easily
filed off.

Chains? Yes, I'm running right-side drive with a 1x system. I really hate
front derailleurs on tandems, so going 1X on this one let me skip having to
source tandem cranks.

[RBW] New Hubbuhs?

2019-08-19 Thread Marc Pfister
There's probably at least 11 other newborn Hubbuhs out there, here's mine:

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1SaleiFUCw/

Parts highlights:

60mm G-One Speeds tubeless on Velo Orange Voyagers
DT rear hub, Shimano XT Dyno front
1x10 SLX, will probably switch to 1x12 NX once we figure out the gearing
range
VO Granola bars

Still needs a real shakedown ride but I think this is going to be an
excellent bike. Only slight bummer is that the front top water bottle mount
is useless on the size small frame because of the lower top tube.

My current not-a-hubbuh tandem has the GravelKing 48s on it, running tubes
with tubeless sealant. This bike probably sees at least 75% of its mileage
on dirt roads in goathead country. I have not had a single flat or cut in
the past year.

The upcoming Hubbuh is going to run 60mm Schwalbe G-One Speeds tubeless.
This tire only comes in blackwall, but there's a 50mm non-tubeless version
available in tanwall.

WTB has a 50mm version of the Venture coming out, and there's a tubeless
tanwall version.

Similar but slightly skinnier is the 47mm Teravail Cannonball, which is
available in tubeless tanwall version too.

Bob,

If you don't plan to mount a rack but would like have a 50mm rack-style
dyno tail light, I have an adjustable design for a light bracket that
mounts to the rack bosses. You can configure the model to fit your bike,
download it, and send the model to be 3d printed:

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3091821 and
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3093032

One has the bracket arms parallel to the face of the light. The other has
arms at 45 degrees to more efficiently bridge over cantilever and
centerpull brake cables.

I have my own 3d printer so can also assist in getting these into the hands
of anyone that wants one. Just email me off-list.

Maxxis ReFuse 650bx50 is a big file tread and seems to be liked by a lot of
people. It's not too fragile but doesn't feel slow. It also is easy to deal
with for tubeless.

The Schwalbe Thunder Burt is known to be a very fast feeling tire, much
faster on pavement than it looks. But it also has decent side knobs for
when you're in the dirt.

For adventuring in the North end of NorCal it's worth tracking down Chuck
"Bodfish" Elliot's books. He runs a small shop in Quincy worth visiting,
and some of the maps from his books are available on his
website: http://www.bodfishbicycles.com/#projects.

I used to live up in that direction and there's a lot of amazing roads to
ride.

If you want a cheap DIY version, you can buy surplus M65 jacket liners for
about $10. The sleeves come off easily by snipping some stitching. Some
have buttons on one side, but the one I have was all button holes so I had
to sew 3 buttons on one side. As a vest you probably want to size down one
size.
