There are maybe 600 miles or so on the frame. I’m only selling it because I

It’s in overall great shape, with some very minor cable run on the NDS
headtube, and some minor marks from a bike rack on the DS seat-stay and
mid-stay. No dents or anything major. As I exclusively ran it singlespeed,
the chain stay and hanger are in perfect shape, though the inside of the
dropouts are a little marked up from fiddling with the ENO hub.

BB/seatpost/headset are included, as are “The Platypus Care Guide” and the
accompanying documentary DVD Riv gave away. I think I even have the
original paint covers for the canti-studs, but will need to look around for
them.

I am asking $1250 net to me shipped from Austin, TX (or free local

Re: [RBW] Re: Susie Longbolts vs Platypus for both pavement & off-road riding?

2021-12-12 Thread Nathan F
Just to put the final nail in the Platypus tire clearance debate's coffin:
I'm running the same 2.2" tires as Ray Varella, tubeless, and they fit
great with plenty of mud clearance. I'm not going to take a picture, you'll
just have to believe us! Those Herse tires are the perfect Platypus tires
for mixed surface riding.

Personally, I'd only get a Gus / Susie if I absolutely *needed* a big MTB
tire. That would be riding trails, and by that I mean single track, not
unpaved paths and gravel roads, 95% of the time.

If you'd only like a 2.2" max, get a Platypus or a Clem!

Eric,

Sach's decade long waiting list is a recent invention from frame building's
explosion in popularity around the late 00s / early 10s. It wasn't always
that difficult to have him build you a bike.

In the 90s I believe he designed some lugs for Rivendell, and then later
made 3 frames or so for them when they were shopping around for builders?
Not so sure on the numbers for that second part, but I know they didn't use
him much.

[RBW] Re: Rack mountable UBS lights

2021-06-01 Thread Nathan F
Kushan,

Most USB lights won't natively mount to your rack, and those that do (like
the Blue Lug Koma on Crust Bike's webstore) are daytime safety blinkers,
not serious headlights. To use something bright enough to actually
illuminate things, you'll need to use an adaptor like the Paul Gino or
Problem Solvers Braze-On Light Mount.

It's been nice seeing everyone get their frames, both here and on
Instagram. Lots of great builds so far and plenty of inspiration for how
I'll route the rear cantilever on mine. Seems I'm not the only one who
wanted to use cantis!

Yesterday the front rack came in for mine... now all that's left are the
rims and frameset! Pending any further delays, I should be riding my
Platypus in about 5 weeks or so.

Agreed Jason, I never get tired of seeing them. I had no clue there were
any Sage Hillbornes left, and am glad to see one built up like that. It's
where I think mine will eventually end up.

For some reason, don't ask me why, to my eye the sage green Sams look
especially good built up with no fenders and with black knobby tires (like
above). Riv used to have one built up like that on the landing page of
their old site. Perhaps thats why I'm so attracted to them? Who knows, but
they look GOOD!

I've got a 55 in the Lime-Olive headed my way!

Unfortunately my rims are ~8 weeks out, which'll mean putting the frame on
ice for a bit until they come in. Sure wish I ordered those sooner! I'll do
a full build post once I'm all done. In the meantime, I'm excited to see
what people who aren't named Leah have to say about the bike, though I can

What handlebars are people thinking of running? I'm between quite a few at
the moment and am having trouble making up my mind: Albatross, Billie,
Osprey, Granola, Ahearne, Jones Bend, phew, that's a lot.

I thought to look at Cheviot builds for inspiration, but it seems like 95%
of those frames ended up with albatross bars (including my partners!).

All I know is I'm *not* a Bosco person.

[RBW] FS: Stuff! For cyclists! For... you?

2021-02-14 Thread Nathan F

Hi all, as I’m stuck indoors due to snow and ice here in PDX (don’t worry,
I did get out for a ride) I’ve decided to get rid of a few things that I
have laying around. Some Riv-ish, some not as much. Please shoot me a
message if you’re interested in anything. Prices include shipping, I accept
Paypal and cash via carrier pigeon.

   - White Industries 16T Freewheel. OK condition, some installation scars
but not too much wear on the teeth. $50.
   - White Industries DOS ENO 17T/19T 2-speed Freewheel. OK condition, just
like the last. Installation marks but little wear on the teeth. $65.
   - White Industries MI5 Front Hub, polished silver 32H. Purchased
mid-2019, in good shape. Certainly less than 1000 miles on it. Selling
because I upgraded to a SON dynamo. Slight marks in the spoke holes from a
wheel build, as you’d expect. $90.
   - Shimano DH-3N72 32H Silver Dynamo Hub. Perhaps the standard dynamo
around these parts, this one is brand new in the Shimano box as I ended up
   with SON. $75.
   - Paul Components Gino light mount in silver (not polished). Nice little
light mount, I’ve upgraded to a rack mounted dynamo set up and thus won’t
be needing this guy any more. $20.
   - Brooks B-17S “Ladies Standard” brown saddle. Basically new, no wear on
it at all. The intended rider didn’t want to deal with breaking it in
   (can’t blame her!). $90.

OK now here’s the more off-beat stuff:

   - Dura Ace FC-7710 Track crank, 170mm, in silver. This one’s a long shot
sale, but perhaps someone’s looking for a very nice crank. And I mean very,
very nice--this thing's gorgeous. Brand new in box, never installed. $350.
   - GRX Di2 1x rear derailleur. Brand new in box. $275.
   - GRX RX810 40T 175mm Crankset. Brand new in box. $200.

Always happy to answer any questions about anything above.

Nathan

Re: [RBW] Re: ROADUNO - a new singlespeed!

2020-12-11 Thread Nathan F
Interesting points all, and thanks to Ian for linking that (secret? I could
only find it via search) in-progress webpage. I too am hoping for shorter
chain stays, Grant comparing it to the Hillborne/Homer is good news in that
regard. After some further reflection the one thing I'm not a huge fan of
is the name. Is "Roaduno" supposed to be a play on "Roadini?" Maybe it's
that any name is going to fall flat when compared to Platypus?

Robert, 120mm is great because of all the existing wheelsets available.
After the fixie craze a decade a go high-quality track parts are CHEAP.
Modern rims and spokes built up by a competent mechanic won't have any
issues. So I think they made the right call there. Not to mention 120mm is
10mm lighter than 130mm 😉

I'm really tempted by this one. A month ago it would've been an easy
purchase but I acquired a free White eccentric hub the other day and the
financially prudent thing to do would be to install it on my '18 Hillborne.
That's not quite as fun though, you know?

Seems like they cleaned it up a bit and added compass tires and wipers (the
ones in the original listing look like they were dry rotted and no good).
Wouldn't be surprised if there was some other mechanical issues that needed
sorting. Should move quick in a hot market like SF!

https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/bop/d/seattle-nitto-rack-front-campee-34f/7244039700.html

this looks to be a pretty good deal, for anyone in the Seattle-area.
Especially if you could get them down to under $100.

2020-11-29 Thread Nathan F
Beautiful bike Leah! Glad to hear you're enjoying it so far. My one
aesthetic suggestion, from someone who owns the same high-polish rims--peel
off the stickers! The font on them is so aggressive for some reason. If I
remember correctly they come right off with minimal residue. Then they'll
really shine (in every sense)!

Re: [RBW] Re: A Bit Irked that Riv Changed the Seatpost Size

2020-11-27 Thread Nathan F
We're basically just bickering at this point but I can't help myself... the
suspension posts posted on eBay above are all awful compared to the market
leading suspension posts from Cane Creek and the like. They're not even
really the same thing from a functionality perspective. Linking to them is
a total straw man.

Cane Creek's design has been around for 20+ years, and is a well proven,
tunable, and serviceable technology. Lots and lots of people love them and
I suspect that's what OP was hoping to use.

[RBW] Re: A Bit Irked that Riv Changed the Seatpost Size

2020-11-26 Thread Nathan F
I didn't try to establish there is a standard seatpost size, I said* almost
*standard ; ) How about this phrasing: there are only a few sizes in broad
use today and the most common one is 27.2.

Ignoring that part of what I said, my point still stands. Using weird old
sizes like Riv does reduces options for customers and is a dumb idea!

I was also disappointed to learn my Hillborne used a 26.8. What a
frustrating choice, since seat post diameter is one of the few things in
the bicycling industry that is *almost* standard nowadays (ignoring the
sizes in use on modern MTB, plus all the proprietary crap). Then here comes
Riv using something else! And instead of picking a size with some sort of
tangible benefit, they picked a seemingly random one used infrequently 3+
decades ago. It's a bit eye-rolling, really, for all of Riv's talk over the
years bemoaning the fickleness of the industry they then spec the
strangest, most hard to find post diameters (30.0 on a custom?? Really? I'd
return it!).

Here's a controversial statement: being the only frame manufacturer using a
dead/rare post size is almost no different than using a proprietary seat
post.

I take this auction and similar, like a used mug that went for $55 a month

People want the stuff (myself included) and I know the margin is there to

Looking at the cap in question, I don't see anything special about
it. It's cotton, its proceeds will not benefit any charity, and it's
*used *(albeit in almost-new condition). Why are people willing to
bid this cap up so high? And more importantly, am *I* now slightly
wealthier because I have a stack of similar used Rivendell caps in
different colors, including this mustard-yellow version? :)

Ha! What a great description. Regarding the Clipper, supposedly it is the
same mold as the Sugino, so they should be identical.

The Atlas and the A23 are the same price, except a set of A23s are 3/4 lb
lighter. If you want classic looks get the Pacenti Brevet which is
basically the same weight as the A23. Dyads or cliffhangers are more
appropriate if they'll be doing heavy duty (or off-road) touring. I just
really don't see the appeal of the Atlas, beyond that Riv sung it's praises
over a decade ago.

[RBW] Re: My First Riv - c.2016 Sam H - Help needed for Newbie

2020-11-10 Thread Nathan F
Hello fellow Sam owner! Lots of good advice has already been offered in
this thread.

I have an '18 in the same color, but with canti brakes. It was my first
build as well, and I blinged out whenever and wherever possible. Retail
cost of the build was ~$5000. White cranks and hubs, polished Velocity
Quills, Paul brakes, Nitto finishing kit, etc., and I can say the only
things that were "worth" it were the brakes. I'm very happy with the
Pauls--if you can get the centerpulls they make to work on your bike, I'd
recommend them. For the crank, order one of the "Clipper" sets from Riv or
Soma. They're such a great deal.

My big advice to you is regarding the wheels. It's hard to recommend a set
without knowing your weight. I know the Riv crowd loves the Atlas, but it
is an incredibly burly rim that you likely don't need. A23s or Quills are
the better all round rims for most people. Pacenti and HED are nice as
well. Assuming you're <300lb and not doing heavily loaded touring, 32H
front / rear should be the MAX spoke counts you need.

Wheels are a real sticking point for me because the general advice on here
can be quite dated. When Riv-built Rivs come into the shop I work, they are
frequently the most overbuilt bikes I've ever seen. We're talking a 100lb
woman riding 36H touring wheels for riding in the city when they could
easily, and safely, be on 24H cyclocross race wheels. Onetime someone had a
bike that, again, they were just riding in the city (no loaded touring)
with a 42H rear wheel. It's utter madness. Once you add in the propensity
for Riv owners to ride terrible tires--I've been so happy to see Riv
overhaul their tire program--these bikes end up not being as fun to ride as
they should be.

[RBW] Re: How large of a tire will a Sam Hillborne actually fit

2020-11-08 Thread Nathan F
To repeat what others have said, 48-50 really is the comfortable limit on
my 18'. I'm running 43mm and the SKS fenders are TIGHT, especially on the
rear. I know normally bike brands normally pad the max clearance to prevent
warranty claims, but Riv hasn't on this model. It really can't go much
bigger.

Re: [RBW] Re: 58cm Quickbeam build

2020-10-24 Thread Nathan F
Beautiful quickbeams, everyone. I've always wanted one... unfortunately, I
was 10 years old when they were produced. I have no doubt if Riv released
this model without tinkering with it (especially in orange), they'd be able
to sell at least a hundred through preorders.

Miles, I think I sort of know the person who helped you with that bike.
You're in the bay area right? I'm a 56, and the orange/canti is my favorite
model so you'd ever like to sell it I'll happily buy--name your price!

love piecing together bikes and making them my own, what I like about this
one is the part selections (minus the saddle) are all artifacts from when
the bike was sold. It is in immaculate condition.

The seller listed this as a 58 but I discovered quickly after it was
delivered to me that it's actually a 56. It fits me, but more like a race
bike would which is antithetical to Riv's philosophy and therefore feels a
little sacrilegious. My obsessive nature is fixated on the notion that a
 58
is a better size for me, but I think that for now I just need to let that
go and enjoy the ride. That said, I hope you get years of enjoyment out of
 that 58!

Re: [RBW] Re: Looking for in house bike stand/holder

2020-09-26 Thread Nathan F
What we use at my shop:
https://designbydelta.com/collections/bike-racks/products/adjustable-floor-stand

I love the adaptability of it, literally and bike will work. We've used
them for road and (increasingly) full suspension e-mtbs, which are
extremely heavy. I've also found it to be the easiest rack to take bikes
out of and correspondingly put bikes into, it only takes a second. You can
also chain them together with an optional attachment to make a custom rack
that'll fit all of your bikes.

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur for Riv Silver 34/24 cranks?

2020-09-13 Thread Nathan F
I had the same issue when setting up my girlfriend's Cheviot last year. She
runs the Silver 34/24 crank set up with a 9 speed drivetrain, set up with
trigger shifters. At first I tried a cheap triple, which didn't work as
well as I'd have hoped (would've been fine if run friction). Then a Sora
double, which didn't work at all (unique pull ratio, again would've been
fine if run friction).

Eventually I settled on a 10-speed Deore XT FD-M785. It works perfectly,
and I found the "low clamp" much easier to set up than other styles, as the
clamp is below the small chainring. Yes it's not an elegantly forged piece
of art, but hey it's got a silver cage and the uglier bits are hidden
behind the crankset.

[RBW] Re: 55cm Canti Sam Clearance?

2020-08-26 Thread Nathan F
I run 43mm Gravelkings on my 55 canti sam w/fenders and they fit fine. I
think the 50mm would probably squeeze in (assuming they are a slick tire,
and not knobby), but you'd be leaving very little room for any debris. That
might be an issue if your wheel is ever slightly out of true or dish. And I
probably wouldn't ride off road with them.

There hasn't been word about whether the new run of Sams will be identical
to the last. The current trend seems to be more and more clearance in each
model year, so you may be in luck.

[RBW] Re: Paul Mini Moto brakes

2020-07-26 Thread Nathan F
I forgot to mention--they are very, very easy to set up. Much less
frustrating than a normal v-brake, which aren't very frustrating at all! I
especially like that no screw drivers are required, just a 5mm allen and a
15mm wrench.

Just remember they are short pull, so you'll likely need to replace your
Appaloosa's levers as standard v's are long-pull.

work with most tire sizes (I run 43mm Gravelking SK tubeless), but do not
play that nicely with fenders. The cable on mine runs very close to / on

There are photos online of people running the cable UNDER the fender which

I have a 18' Hillborne running 43mm Gravel King SKs, set up tubeless on a
Velocity Quill wheelset (with SKS fenders!). Great tires, I like the ones
with a little extra puncture protection as well. They're good for
everything but mud.

You could also look at options from WTB, Bontrager (GR1/GR2 Team Issue),
Schwalbe (g-one), and Rene Herse. Surly has some cheap options but since
you spent $$$ on a Riv don't cheap out on tires like a lot of people seem
to.

are one of those things you only really notice if they're bad. The Quills
are packed with modern tech (wide tires and tubeless ready) and are fairly
lightweight, which is why I recommend them to people.

[RBW] Re: 1x11 on a Roadini?

2019-11-26 Thread Nathan F
Not on a Roadini, but on I run 1x11 on my Hillborne. The two should be very
similar to set up. Setting it up was the same as any other bike except
easier, because I didn't have to fiddle with Shimano's new 11 speed front
derailleur designs.

Mine is an Ultegra RX rear derailleur (the one with an optional clutch)
paired to a white industries crank, which work nicely together. 11-34 in
the rear and a 38 up front suits me well most of the time. I'll spin out
downhill going ~30 mph, and I can climb most things. WI cranks are awesome
because you can basically get any tooth count you want, so if I ever want
to go slower / climb more, I can make the swap quickly and relatively
cheaply ($75). Not to mention they are square taper compatible and come in
silver...

If you want even more gears, check out Shimano's new GRX line. That'll run
a 40 up front with an 11-42 mountain cassette on the rear, and the
derailleur works with 11 speed road shifters.

[RBW] Re: Tubeless with fenders on a Cheviot?

2019-10-04 Thread Nathan F
Going tubeless won't affect tire clearances, if the tires fit with tubes
they'll fit with sealant. To that end, you'll be happy to hear I just put
together a 50 cm 650b Chev with SKS P50s and 43mm Fairweather tires and
everything fit well.

Good luck with your install!

[RBW] Re: Build + Small Ride Report: Testing out my new Hillborne!

2019-09-25 Thread Nathan F
Thanks all! So far I've been loving it and plan on riding it for a long
long time. Maybe not in its current drop-bar configuration, but in *some*
configuration. I built up a Cheviot in the same color for my partner with
albatross bars, and man are they comfy. I'm hoping to put a pair on in the
future.

Cleaning it up in the shop afterwards was fun. I basically brought part
some of the forest home with me!

[RBW] Build + Small Ride Report: Testing out my new Hillborne!

2019-09-23 Thread Nathan F

Hello all! I recently purchased my first Rivendell, the last 55cm Hillborne
in sage green from Rivelo, and have been loving it. Everyone’s builds here
have been a huge inspiration and I’ve learned a lot reading this group the
past few months, so I figured I’d share my build and a mini-ride report.

Roman’s Hillborne build was really inspirational, including his use of
black components which y’all don’t use too often. The cockpit is Nitto with
Paul Mini-Moto brakes, a White Industries crankset, and Ultegra brifters
paired to an RX derailleur. Wheels were built by me and are soon to be set
up tubeless: 32H White Industries Mi5 laced to polished Velocity Quills,
with 43mm Gravelking SK+. I totally forgot about fenders in my initial
parts order, but the rainy season has started so I snagged a pair of P50s
and am currently installing them.

It might need a shorter stem because the reach with the noodles is quite
long, and I hugely underestimated the length of the technomic and should’ve
gone with a Pearl. The steerer tube likely needs to be cut for aesthetic
reasons. And I could see myself buying a dynamo setup sometime soon…. but
other than those very minor issues it’s all done, and I'm loving it : )

To break the bike in, I took in on a nice stroll through Forrest Park here
in Portland. Initially I had planned on doing a harder, much more intense
ride in the park but my stomach was not up to it and I returned home. I
went back the next day to do this ride, which at 40 miles door-to-door and
2000 ft of climbing is much more relaxed. It’s really beautiful out there
now that the rainy season has begun. The ground is softening up and it’s
getting cold and moist enough in the park that you can see your breath in
the air. I bet it’d be even nicer in the early morning. If you’re ever in
Portland and have time for a ride, I’d recommend it. And if you’re in
Portland and haven’t done it, what are you waiting for! Get out there!
