[RBW] For sale - Nitto 58cm aluminum Bosco bars - like new
I’ve been on the merry-go-round with handlebars. I started with albatross, went to these Boscos, switched to Bosco moose, went back to these Boscos, and now I’m sticking with Albatross! These have been ridden on 10 rides at most and look like new. I paid $97 for them in March. They are nice bars, but I prefer albatross. Also, for all interested in these it’s really important that you use carbon fiber friction paste in the stem connection otherwise they can slip, like they did for me before someone in this group enlightened me. With the paste they are rock solid. Selling for $65 plus shipping. Please send me a private note if you are interested. [RBW] For Sale - Brooks B68 Aged saddle (new in box, never mounted)
Hi All, I'm selling a brand new Brooks B68 saddle in the "aged" finish. It's never been mounted and is as-new. Comes in original packaging and with the nylon rain cover. I have two of these already, so having a spare seems a little ridiculous, so I'm thinning the herd. For those unfamiliar with this saddle, it's the same as a sprung B67, just without the springs, plus it has lacing to keep the saddle from sagging...a huge improvement for these saddles. It's my favorite saddle of all by far, and they haven't been produced for years now. It might be the last new one you'll ever find. I'm selling for $190 plus shipping. And before anyone screams at me for gouging, that's less than I paid for it! Serious inquiries only please. Thanks. [RBW] Issues with slipping bosco bars?
Hey, just wanted to give an update. I applied some carbon seatpost goop in there and miraculously it no longer slips! I was sceptical, but it really works. Thanks to all who gave the tip. Re: [RBW] Re: Issues with slipping bosco bars?
Sorry to hear that. I think it’s just poor design, unfortunately. Too much leverage from the long bars and not enough surface area in the clamp. The bosco moose seems like the safest way to go. [RBW] Re: Offroad Mountain Clem-L’s
Hi all. New member here. I thought I'd share my thoughts on a 64cm Clem L that I got last night. I also have a 62cm Appaloosa. The Clem L is a trip! The frame flexes noticeably compared to the Appaloosa (which I suppose some might view as a negative), but it's just *crazy* how smooth the ride is over bumps. Seriously, small to medium sized bumps just don't exist anymore. No hyperbole here, it makes the Appaloosa feel harsh in comparison, and that bike is like a sofa compared to most bikes. I took it for a ride last night over a trail that has a lot of raised tree roots and bumps, and the bike just cruised over stuff that would have beat me up on the Appaloosa. It's like riding a steam roller! It has to be due to frame flex (and maybe the longer wheelbase) because I'm running equivalent tires, bars and saddles on both bikes. Yet despite all the gooshiness, it seems to accelerate at least as well as the Appaloosa, although I'll put that to the test this weekend. Amazing. It's just a blast to ride...pure fun! For touring or longer distance road riding, the Appaloosa would be my first choice and I'm not going to give it up, but for blasting around for fun, the Clem L is fantastic and I'm glad I got it. My only regret is getting green instead of blue! [RBW] When to say goodbye to a bike
In your situation (I've found myself there), it's hard to get rid of bikes. Not much motivation. I usually need a flash of motivation to overcome me--not because I'm so attached to the bike, but because I hate the whole process of selling. I'm not in any way wealthy and could use every $$ coming my way. So if the bike is of any real value, I like to sell it. But as long as the bike is here with me and holds it's value (and I don't need immediate cash), that's a wash in my book. So it's a stalemate and it usually hangs there until I get all hopped up on another bike I want, or want to reclaim the space for something else. I will never ship a bike unless there is a good financial incentive. Too much hassle. But for many bikes you and I might own, shipping is preferred because we can't always find the right buyer locally who will pay its worth (and appreciate the bike). So if it must be done…man, Is still hate to go there. CL is a pita from spam and flake responses but I recently sold my fargo for a fair price and have sold many bikes that way. Mostly what I like about it is that it's local. The buyer sees what's he getting. No surprises, no ebay feedback to worry about, cash on hand, etc. Sometimes you even make a new friend. No axe murderers so far. ;) If a bike has little money value and I know of someone who would benefit from it, I give it away. I've given away a quite few bikes and helped neighbors unload their unused bikes this way--fixing them up first to make them safe/rideable. There's no bike co-op locally, I don't think. Goodwill rarely knows what to do with a bike. We have a local charity that does a bike auction once a year. That's a candidate for a donation. Last option, if the bike has enough desirable bits and pieces mounted, I part out the bits I don't want, keep the ones I do, and sell the frame. It's easier to ship this way and no matter what the frame sells for, I usually make more cash this way. Good luck! • Perry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Which RBW Velosophies have worked for you? Which haven't?
Most things, I'd been already leaning towards or doing. But for a few, I just needed a nudge. Probably albas, platform pedals, and big saddlebags are the changes with the biggest payback for me. But the main take-away, upon reflection (because you know, all this talk on this and the i-bob list makes a guy think) is clothing/attitude. Those two are connected for me. Biking clothes put me in mind to bike. "Regular" clothes put me in a mind to explore, dilly dally, go out and meet people, and pursue all kinds of good, clean, biking fun. I've gone over to 100% "regular" clothes for biking and it has changed who I am with respect to cycling. I now cycle less miles but get out on my bike much more frequently. I do many day trips/mini adventures. I explore towns, stores, cafés, neighborhoods. I ride slower. Further, through the exploration of how clothes have affected my cycling, I've discovered that they also affect my mood/attitude. So I'm paying more attention to wardrobe in general. And my new way of cycling has drastically altered my attitude of place. Although I've rediscovered and love where I live, it's unpleasant to dilly-dally or dawdle about outdoors in cold weather. So I've come to hate that New England robs me of that mode for the better part of the year--and yearn to actually do something about this sad fact. Back to clothes to finish up: I no longer even wear what most here would consider riv-approved clothing. I get most of my clothing at Saks and other fancy outlet stores where for a little more than goodwill prices, I can find pretty nice duds. I fill in the rest from REI sales and the usual outdoor clothing suspects. I love the liberating experience of getting off my bike and feeling perfectly comfortable entering some swanky shop or restaurant without feeling like a freak or Tour de France wannabe. Re: [RBW] Re: Favorite Bike Build-up 'Secret'
One more. If you're not planning on/sure about fenders, slip a piece of old inner tube over fork steerer and down to crown before assembly. Slip it over the bottom headset cup after assembly/adjustment. It will prevent water from shooting into bottom of headset like a power wash during a downpour. 2" wide inner tube is about perfect. Of course, this will most definitely offend anyone who believes that a bike without full fenders is an abomination. ;) • Perry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Waitin' on my Riv--debating on Drops versus Albatross
For switch-ability of cockpits, shifter cable splitters need to be installed. A good location is between the downtube and the bb cable guide for both front and back. Alternatively, the rear shifter cable can be split between the bb cable guide and chainstay rear derailleur boss. For brakes, there are various options to ponder. I did this about 11 years ago (can't believe it's been so long!) and have the PDF of the blog post saved. Don't know if it helps but here it is. http://bit.ly/1b40T2a Oh, and about the op, albas. Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Park CN-10 cable & housing cutter
The park tool has cable and cable housing ferrule crimpers on the inside of the cutting jaws. You can use the housing ferrule crimper to round out the cable housing after cutting it. It works quite well his way. Just squeeze hard enough until the housing is rounded. Additional finishing, if needed, can be done by inserting an awl into the cut end of the cable housing. I used to finish the cables sheldon style (grinder/awl) but it was too much work and frankly, it's not needed. I've done a boat load of cables with just the park tool and it's clean every time. This tool is a must if you're going to cut your own cables and housing. Re: [RBW] Rambouillet or San Marcos
More ingredients to stir into the pot… A little dissent on the Ram. The asthetics of the contrasting paint and lugs on most Rivs are a bit too ornate for my taste so I actually like/prefer the riv/soma San Marcos. And the blue color is really nice (at least on the internets--never seen one in person). I thought hard about this bike when it came out. But alas, it has to be a 2 top tuber at my size and that breaks all deals for me. I think it has to get to 65 cm or larger before two tubes start to look right to my eye. As for size, I've had many, many bikes that should have fit me according to charts, recommendations and such. All ended up being too small but I've never had a bike that was too big. I, however, like my bars above the saddle and I'm riding Albas. For what it's worth. Particulars: I've been told I have very uniform, off the shelf proportions of torso/legs/arms. After repeated measurements, I read my PBH as between 34.5 inches (87.63 centimeters) and 34.62500 inches (87.9475 centimeters). The last bike I bought was a vintage trek which I thought would probably be too big. But for $100, what the hey! This is the best fitting bike I've ever owned (although I wouldn't go any bigger). It measures as follows: Seat tube: 24" C-T, Top tube: 23" C-C, Standover 34.5". When I straddle the bike at stops, the top tube is right up there in my business. And yet, after many miles, it's never been a real world issue. Because of the albas, a longer top tube would be fine. But this top tube measurement would definitely work with drop bars if I went that way. There's less than a fistful of seatpost showing--which looks fine to me eye. But I find too little seatpost showing preferable to too much…whatever the too little/too much designations even mean. I have to personally thank Grant here. I wouldn't have looked at a bike this big in my lifetime had it not been for his well publicized opinions on the matter. Really opened my eyes. So all this is just some more data which may in no way apply whatsoever to you. [RBW] The Mysteries of Bike Assembly
Some excellent points. Regarding the cable splitters... > In contrast the male end holds the cable with two set screws, but the entry > hole in the brake connect is much smaller than the exit hole and, to my eye, > just barely distinguishable from the derailler connect. I have davinci cable splitters and find no problem distinguishing between brake and derailleur easily. Not sure that the brand would make any difference but just throwing it out as a data point. Regarding 50+ year old eyesight, I'm 55. This is my main problem working on bikes. This and diminished dexterty of my hands/fingers and loss of general flexibility (to bend and hold my body in certain situations while making repairs). For the flexibly part, I find myself moving the bike on the stand more often to get the best angle at the job. Good readers that don't slide down my nose and this http://www.lightsandknives.com/images/D/hl4.jpg are the best I've been able to come up with for the eyesight thing. I remain open to suggestions. Also, as noted, I strongly suspect that a brake cable will not be be flexible enough to give optimal shifting performance. This may be most noticeable around tight bends such as under the BB cable guide to front derailleur. Also, could be that this is more of an issue with indexed shifting. I realize these standards were established prior to indexed shifting so maybe I'm wrong about the reason but I've done some experiments and the stiffness of a thick cable does appear to effect shifting IME. • Perry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Hookin' up shifters question
Finger tight is good to start with. Get the barrel adjuster to mid-point to begin with so that you can go one way or other after the fact. You may want to adjust for indexing first and see how that runs. If it shifts indexed, I can't imagine it not shifting manually. Go through the gears on all chainring combinations on the stand...multiple passes. Listen for any problems and observe whtether the deraileur want to shift on it's own in a particular gear. That will give you a good clue about too loose/tight a cable is. Good luck. • Perry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: From bar ends to thumbies
For drop bars, I can see it. For albas: I've been riding albas for many years on various bikes--always with bar end shifters. Every year or so, I get the thumbies bug, buy some Paul thumbies (I love Paul components), and set up a bike with them. Then a week or a month later, I go back to the bar ends. I sell the thumbie mounts cheap, only to get the bug again a year later and have to re-acquire them. I just mounted/unmounted some thumbies but this time, I'm keeping them in my parts box because it's getting expensive to keep buying high and selling them at a loss. ;) On albas, I can't think of any way that thumbies beat bar ends but lots of reasons why bar ends beat thumbies (more handlebar space, cleaner look, easier to shift with massive gloves/frozen fingers, less chance of flare up of carpal tunnel). So there's my 2 cents and yes, of course, ymmv (or your wife's for that matter). • Perry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Morning ride, Proto-Appaloosa Mystery Bike
Jeff, that looks like the bit but I can't be sure. It probably is though. Good eye on your part. I'm intrigued by this Appaloosa contraption. I especially like the way Keven has his set up on the riv site. http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/staff3.htm I think this is great set up--with the big saddlebag weight resting forward of the rear hub. Next, the front rack like he's got there (with bag or basket). For extending touring, I wonder if a frame bag would work on that bike? That would be one great mofo rig, IMO. It's all theoretical, of course. • Perry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Morning ride, Proto-Appaloosa Mystery Bike
On Keven's, there is a bit added on to the downtube shifter cable boss that doubles the right cable stop--to accommodate a cable stop for the fd, it appears. Anyone know what this part is? Also, is an Appaloosa production run in the works? • Perry On Tuesday, September 17, 2013 1:54:39 PM UTC-4, Pudge wrote: > OK, here’s your Mystery Bike fix: > > http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/9724864903/in/set-72157635480441565 > > > And here: > > http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/8367710962/in/set-72157630957672582 > > > > > It’s interesting – Mark Nobilette built 9 (I think) of these bikes, but I’ve > never seen pics of any of the others (except Keven’s > > http://www.flickr.com/photos/49513914@N04/8299057938/in/photolist-dDmQMQ , > which I don’t think was one of the nine). > > > > From: rbw-owne...@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owne...@googlegroups.com] > On Behalf Of Ron Mc > > Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2013 12:47 PM > > To: rbw-owne...@googlegroups.com > > Subject: [RBW] Re: Morning ride, Proto-Appaloosa Mystery Bike > > > > > > it's a great shot, but we want to see the mystery bike > > > > On Tuesday, September 17, 2013 11:45:15 AM UTC-5, William wrote: > > > > Hey, that IS a cool shot. The most impressive bike cooperative I've come across is Bikas in Tucson, http://bicas.org/ And I second the drive down Bisbee for the Bicycle Brothel. [RBW] Re: Kickstand Trimming
The back-side of the kick stand has measurements in millimeters on it. That's the distance from the center of the BB to the ground. With the bike standing straight, measure down. Then cut where the numbers correspond to the measurement. Take off about a 1 cm more if you are putting the black rubber foot on. [RBW] Remember those learning bikes in the Rivendell Reader? Success Story here
The boy next door, about 2.5 years old now, has been riding one of the scoot bikes for a long time. I picked up a kids bike from somewhere for free and everytime he comes over, he checks it to see if he's grown enough to ride it.
