[RBW] Re: Recommendations on cycling to Rivendell and around San Francisco and the Bay Area

2019-09-16 Thread Randy Franks
There are a whole lot ways to do long and hilly rides, but for urban and
(relatively) flat--but still experiencing a lot--here are my thoughts:

Spend a couple days in SF. Make sure to go over the Golden Gate on at least
one of them. Starting at the Ferry Building, go north on Embarcadero, to
Beach then onto Aquatic Park/Fort Mason/Crissy field pathways, over to the
Golden Gate, crss the bridge, wind down to Fort Baker. Turn around here and
head back, or go further north on Alexander into Sausalito, eat soem good
food, catch a ferry back to the Embarcadero waterfront.

In the East Bay, make a loop around Lake Merritt, then follow bike
boulevards over to Emeryville. I like going through downtown Oakland, out
14th Ave and riding up Mandela Parkway, where the Cypress Structure was
prior to collapsing in 1989 earthquake. Not a super great area, but it's
short and quick. This puts you near Shellmound St in Emeryville so you can
connect to the bike path of new east span of the Bay Bridge, or go north to
Powell and connect to the SF Bay trail. option 1) Ride out to Yerba Buena,
then return. or option 2) For more miles follow the SF Bay Trail all the
way to Marina Bay neighborhood in Richmond. You can extend further to the
west riding on industrial streets for ~2 miles (stay south of I-580) to the
little commercial district there in Point Richmond which has food choices.
Then go south to Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline and loop around
Dornan/Brickyard Cove/Seacliff/Canal to head back. Of course you can do 1
and 2 on the same ride, as well.

Happy pedaling, Ana!

We have simple Minoura wire cages on our Small HHH. I can get a bottle in
that front top spot, but only for storage. Can't remove or replace while in
motion. Fortunately the lower cage is within reach for me.

Re: [RBW] Re: utility biking shop in SF east bay?

2019-04-23 Thread Randy Franks
Don't give up on the Clem L!

My Pleasanton-based mother had a step thru Trek hybird that she was excited
to get (moderate price point, good local shop), but ended up riding only
begrudgingly after a couple years. Even with tune-ups and different tires,
it just didn't "roll very well" in her words.

Anyway, she has a green Clem L now (fenders, big Wald basket on the front)
and cannot get enough of it. "This bike just...goes...when I pedal it" is
how she puts it. Come to think of it, that's probably the best compliment
you could ever come up with for a bike.

I used a heat gun on a set of handle bars a couple weeks ago, then finished

the tube pressing onto a rim is going to really bond that adhesive to the

[RBW] Re: Shimano DYNO Hubs and Less Rotational Spin

2019-01-23 Thread Randy Franks
Conservation of energy, baby. The dyno is converting rotational energy (or
angular kinetic energy) of the spinning wheel into electrical energy. And
then your headlight is turning the electrical energy into light.

Hook up a battery in place of the headlight, and you've got a regenerative
brake.

[RBW] Re: 3 day SF bike tour routes sought (Roadini)

2019-01-03 Thread Randy Franks

This is a figure-8 loop
,

from the airport out to Half Moon Bay, down the coast to Pigeon Point (I've
always wanted to stay out at the lighthouse like this, but never done it).
Backtrack slightly north to start Day 2, turn inland and climb through the
Santa Cruz Mountains and ride north on Skyline Blvd/Canada Road/Sawyer Camp
Trail to Pacifica. Then Day 3 loops through San Francisco with a ride
across the Golden Gate Bridge, and down the Embarcadero before heading back
to the airport.

Mileages are shorter than your 60/day suggestion due to the elevation gain.
There are some truly awesome climbs and the accompanying spectacular views
in that part of the world. Quite a few state highway miles, but they are
well-used cycling routes. My recollection riding all this solo, on group
rides, charity events, and a couple (gasp) road races is the shoulders are
almost all in good condition and quite wide.

You could also go south on Day 2 from the lighthouse to city of Santa Cruz,
then back north into San Jose. Empire Grade would be the main route, there
are others, but it'll be a very hilly day of riding regardless of route;
stay off Highway 17.

Public transit options to extend your reach in this area are BART and
Caltrain. If you end in the City, BART runs frequently and directly to the
airport. Caltrain runs from Gilroy north through San Jose, past SFO and
into SF, too. Involves a funky transfer onto BART to hit the airport. It's
a traditional commuter rail service; I'm not familiar with their schedules
and bike policies.

I wish Amtrak was better connected, more frequent, and reliable in the
West, because riding SF to Carmel along the coast and catching the train
north from Salinas would be get you a lot of beautiful miles without much
sustained climbing.

Happy planning!

You're in good company! Or, at least not the only mid-thirties guy here.

I started un-racering a couple years after our kids were born (on average 6
years ago), felt bad about it the whole time, and then discovered Rivendell
when I moved nearby in 2015. Put some albatross bars and practical gearing
on a very old Bridgestone that'd been sitting ignored in my garage for many
years, and haven't looked back!

The problem is real though. Keep us updated, preferably with photos :)

Re: [RBW] Re: HubbuhHubbuh email from Riv & donation idea

2018-12-13 Thread Randy Franks

1. This weekend my wife and I are taking the inaugural spin on our
newly-built HHH. Whatever's left in the build budget, plus a few extra
bucks will go into this fundraiser. Beyond the raw awesomeness of the
BTCC's mission, I am so excited to find a way to assuage the guilt of
removing my name from the HHH 2.5 list after snagging the second small sage
set-aside in Will's email a few weeks back. Whew. What a bonus.

2. For sizing, remember the sizes were originally M-L-XL, but that got
confusing and shifted down a notch to the standard S-M-L (per Grant). We're
riding a small and have PBHs 85 and 79 respectively.

3. Reading up on BTCC, it sounds like they are a forum for connecting
willing captains and interested stokers. Do they own bikes directly? Maybe
there's a way to get into the hands of a willing, but non-yet registered
captain to make a white pin someplace where a blue pin is waiting for a
match . Good luck with the logistics,
Alex!

4. If it comes to fruition, who's going to maintain the Instagram page? New
hashtag #RBWOBHHH?

[RBW] Re: How young is too young for a boy to get a hatchet?

2018-12-05 Thread Randy Franks
There's a lot of good, reasonable advice here. I'll just add a couple
points of reference and some resources you might peruse.

The Cub Scouts have a hard prohibition against pocket knives through 2nd
grade. After that, kids can earn a Whittling Chip
 allowing
him/her to carry a pocket knife at Scout events. The Boy Scouts, which is
6th graders and up, have a woodworking badge called the Totin' Chip
 addressing
knives again, as well as larger tools like hatchets and saws. They can also
lose the privileges if they're irresponsible or unsafe, and have to re-earn
the chips.

The skill checklist and lesson plans floating around are good references.
It's common sense stuff, but I usually find something useful, like a way of
explaining that resonates with kids (e.g. stick out your arm, turn in a
circle, if you cannot touch anybody it's safe to open your knife).

Re: [RBW] Re: Seeking recommendations for transporting multiple bikes in minivan

2018-11-29 Thread Randy Franks
Yeah, that's a good solution. I just visualized three bikes inside the van
like U-locking several bikes together. That's a problem I encounter
frequently, but never with a pedal wrench on hand :)

If I only had an Allen wrench for removing and reinstalling pedals on
multiple bikes (especially if they're coming out more then once on the
trip), I'd put up with a fair amount of re-positioning cranks before
concluding it wasn't going to work. YMMV on that though.

I bring the pedal wrench along when we use the roof racks on our van. I can
*just* manage to fit a Skybox between two fork-mounted roof racks, but it
means by removing the inside pedal on both bikes (and accepting everything
in the Skybox is inaccessible until the bikes come back off).

[RBW] Re: Seeking recommendations for transporting multiple bikes in minivan

2018-11-29 Thread Randy Franks
This thread really deserves pictures of everybody's Bike Tetris
achievements.

As a fellow Odyssey owner, I think it'll be tight but that you can pull it
off. We've managed similar (third bike was a 20" kids bike, though) and
still used one seat in second row and one seat in the third row (for
elementary-aged kids, not adults!). The hatch on our 2013 model is short,
so bikes can't roll in with the front wheel still attached.

I'd try putting the XO-3 in headfirst so the handle bars are behind the
driver, then put the Sam in rear wheel first, and finally the Salsa
headfirst again. I think you'll be able to maneuver the Salsa into place,
might have to lay the second row seat down flat for loading. Hopefully the
Salsa bars are far enough over to not poke your passenger in the second row
seat. Drape an old sheet or blanket over the middle bike to stop
metal-on-metal clicking, rattling, and rubbing while you drive.

Lining up pedals can be tricky, probably flat or a 10'o'clock/4'o'clock
position to they're not hitting the floor.
If wide bars are a problem, loosen the headset bolt on top and rotate them
90 degrees for transport.
I find the seat sometimes hits the top of hatch opening and have to lean
the bike way over, but I could also loosen that bolt and drop it down or
pop it out for transport.
You could prop up the front fork once in position with box or piece of
luggage, to keep the fender from bearing weight.
Luggage and removed wheels ought to fit behind the area between hatch and
second row seat.

Last thought, one bike rack is not that expensive and would make this a
slam dunk. The aerodynamic impact on gas mileage is not much, just don't
drive into low overhangs! Here in Portland there's enough demand for roof
accessories to support a used rack dealer (ReRack).

[RBW] Tires for a new HHH build

2018-11-04 Thread Randy Franks
Has anybody ridden Schwalbe G-One tires? Either the all arounders or the “bite”
model? I was thinking 2” Big Bens initially. But these something with a little
tread might be nice. Any other real world recommendations and experience with
tires would be great to read, too.

https://www.schwalbetires.com/node/2366

A pretty reliable source recommended these for the HHH. Our frame arrives
sometime later today (!!!).

Our riding here in Portland, Ore, and environs will include fire roads and dirt
country roads—some, not a lot—and the short stretches here in the city that
remain unimproved for some reason.
