Don't give up on the Clem L! My Pleasanton-based mother had a step thru Trek hybird that she was excited to get (moderate price point, good local shop), but ended up riding only begrudgingly after a couple years. Even with tune-ups and different tires, it just didn't "roll very well" in her words.
Anyway, she has a green Clem L now (fenders, big Wald basket on the front) and cannot get enough of it. "This bike just...goes...when I pedal it" is how she puts it.
