[RBW] A question for Soma San Marcos Owners (V2 in Tiburon blue)

2016-08-06 Thread RoadieRyan
I am considering a San Marcos frame before they are all gone specifically a
54cm frame for 650b wheels and I have a few questions for anyone who might
own a version running 650b wheels a version 2 in 57cm or smaller or a
version 1 San Marcos in 51cm or smaller:

   - what model and size of tires are you running?
   - If you run fenders what type and what size tires do you run with your
fenders -the data says the max tire size is 38c but I am wondering if that
   is with or without tires?
   - what do you like/dislike about this frame?

Thanks

Ryan

[RBW] Re: OT: Oregon Bound

2016-07-11 Thread RoadieRyan
Hi Michael,

I will let others speak to the cycling routes but I will make a couple
suggestions for your Oregon Trip:

   - In Portland you should look up, use, Velo Cult not
only are they a full service shop, more than capable of doing your assembly
work, but the are Steel oriented, server local craft beer, coffee and even
have live music occasionally - If I still lived in PDX I'm not sure I
   would ever leave...
   - If you are touring the Willamette valley you might consider visiting
or even staying at the Hotel Oregon
its a quaint place, part of the
McMenamins' group of pubs and lodgings, and in addition to being a great
jumping off point for a Willamette valley tour- wineries etc. they have a
rooftop bar with a great view of the valley. The drawback being they are
about 20 miles from the start of the Willamette Valley bikeway and I am not
sure what routes are available between the two.
   - As you probably know Oregon is famous for its Pinot's so be sure to
sample them at any wineries you may happen upon.

Enjoy, Oregon is beautiful especially in the summer, I might be a bit
biased I as I did got to University in Corvallis.

[RBW] Can anyone suggest a good LBS in Spokane WA? particularly one that sells used bikes

2016-03-19 Thread RoadieRyan
Hi Group

My big bro has just moved from Seattle to Spokane and now is in position to
bike to work, in Seattle I can think of a number of places that sell used
bikes that I would trust but I don't know Spokane so any suggestions on
either:

A) just a good LBS for tune up, upgrades, sound advice and/or
B) a good place to buy used/refurbished bikes

in *The Lilac City *would be appreciated. If he were still local I could
probably refurb one for him myself but that 10 hour round trip in a car
puts a damper on that idea.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

[RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread RoadieRyan
I have a friend and fellow Seattleite who is a pretty dedicated bicycle
commuter, his moto is "I will ride in the rain, and I will ride in the
dark, I will *not* ride in the rain and the dark" which means he doesn't
commute much from November to March. I think Seattle, like most
economically successful cites is a dichotomy - on the one hand Jobs are
fairly plentiful, if you have the money there is lots of great culture
(arts, dining, sports, outdoors) to enjoy on the other congestion, housing
prices and the gap between haves and have not's sucks. As a native
North-westerner and a Seattleite for the last quarter century I am biased
lots of great places to ride, tons of scenic beauty and no better place to
be on a lovely summer day but it can really suck when its February and it
seems like its been raining non-stop for months...

2015-10-08 Thread RoadieRyan
Wayne, I feel you pain -3 jobs since mid 2012 and I just started the latest
one after a (unemployed) 5 month job search. My dilemma was I had a
purchased a late 70s Motobecane Grand Touring about a year ago that I had
been trying to find for a couple years and then a bunch of new parts for
it. as things started to get tight financially I was strongly considering
selling the MB but decided I would first sell some of the new components
(on this group). I found out soon after listing the parts that I had a new
job, so I was able to hold on to the MB and the parts I can replace as I am
able. I hope you are able to find alternatives to selling your dream frame
and best of luck with the Farming venture -sounds exciting.

[RBW] Re: Quality "budget" steel bike offereings?

2015-05-08 Thread RoadieRyan
I bought a Handsome Devil Frameset back in 2009 that I built up, when I
couldn't afford a Riv, and it has been a great Steed in the last 6 years.
One thing I love about it is that's so versatile; its been a triple a
double and now a 1x9 and it has room for up to 700x50 tires - I am running
700x47c Continentals on it currently. And the price is in line with Surly.
For a riv connection the brothers who run Handsome Devil have a Grant
Peterson tribute bike in the line up -the XOXO which duplicates the iconic
Bridgestone XO. http://handsomecycles.com/

[RBW] Re: So your friend calls and says he wants to buy a bike

2015-05-01 Thread RoadieRyan
I would ask the following

What kind of Triathlons do you do (Sprint, Ironman?)
What kind of bike do you have currently or did you have previously? what is
good or bad about that bike for you?
Will you ride it for anything but Triathlons?
Have you ever ridden a bike in that position (i.e super aero) for any
length of time.

Depending on the specifics of the use I would keep in mind that a tri
specific bike is really good at triathlons and not much else where as a
road bike can be adapted to triathlons (bars, seat, wheels etc) but can
also do road rides and commuting.

 Good luck

[RBW] Re: 1x9 setup "because I felt like it"

2015-02-25 Thread RoadieRyan
I did with this with my "all rounder" bike, a Handsome Devil, about 3 years
ago and have not looked back. With a 36t crank and an 11-36 9 speed
cassette I have the range I need for getting around my hilly neighborhood
with out fussing with a FD. I bought a Paul's "chain keeper" but have
never mounted it as I have never had an issue with the chain dropping.
Enjoy.

Re: [RBW] Re: Solvent tank for drivetrain cleaning

2015-02-25 Thread RoadieRyan
I have been using an ultrasonic cleaner I got on Amazon for the last couple
years and love it as it gets to all the cracks and crevices I would have a
hard time reaching with a tooth brush. It will do almost all of the drive
train components as well as the stem and seat post (if they aren't too
long) I do a lot of work on old 10 speeds so it is very handy. It is close
to this model

[RBW] Re: Daring to wrench on my Riv's?

2014-12-05 Thread RoadieRyan
I learned by working on old 10 speeds and using Sheldon Browns site,
YouTube, and copious amounts of the Zinn and the art of Road bike
maintenance. My take-aways are; take your time, walk away when you get
frustrated, having good tools/the right tools for the job can make things
SO much easier, don't be afraid to consult the LBS if you get stuck, and
finally its so supposed to be fun so enjoy yourself. I don't consider
myself mechanically inclined lungimsam and I have rebuilt about 20 old 10
speeds in the last 7 years. I don't rebuild wheels but I do true them and
do just about everything else. You can do it!

[RBW] Suggestions for a friendly Bike Shop in Corvallis Oregon

2014-09-03 Thread RoadieRyan
I just built up a 1977 Raleigh Record LTD mixte for my Niece to take with

(gasp) didn't have a bike while in College as I lived on campus and didn't
really need one and its been a few ..er..decades since I was last in town
so I am wondering if anyone has any good suggestions on bike shops in
Corvallis, specifically one that willingly works on bike boom era 10 speeds.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

[RBW] Re: Square taper spindle bolt torque

2014-05-25 Thread RoadieRyan
Jim very sorry to hear of your mechanical on a long Brevet. I had a
similar issues with a Sugino crank and Shimano square taper bb combo,
although not as severe as yours but I did have to regularly tighten the non
drive crank to the where I got fed up and just swapped out the whole set up
for a new crank (single chain ring) and bb (VO grand cru) and have not
had that issue since.

[RBW] Re: Fuji Touring Series IV, Rivish Makeover, Phase 1

2014-05-11 Thread RoadieRyan
Bobby,

Sweet find, I restored a 1979 Fuji Royale and really enjoyed it. You may
find that there are more 27" tires options that you think, I did a blog
post on this topic a while back
(http://ryansrebuilds.blogspot.com/2013/02/myth-busted-there-are-very-few-options.html)

I think the Paselas are a great choice and your 27 1 /4" tires are the
equivalent of a 700x32c, you can also go up to 27 1 3/8 to get a slightly
plusher 700x37c equivalent. Either way you go enjoy that beautiful Fuji.

I agree with you Matthew J I have a 1x9 set up as I live in a hilly area
and it has worked great for 2 years of commuting, errand running and casual
fun rides. Don't find myself missing the FD and with a 11-36t cassette

[RBW] Re: Contemplating 1 x 9 drivetrain

2014-04-08 Thread RoadieRyan
Hi Patrick

I made this switch on my Handsome devil about 3 years ago and love it, I
have rarely found I miss the high end and the low is low enough to get me
up most of the hills here in hilly west Seattle, I am a gear inches fan
since finding Sheldon Browns gear calculator and I set up my bike with; 36t
chain-ring, a 12-36t cassette, Deore LX RD and Ultegra bar end shifter and
it gives me great coverage per below. Unless you really love to mash the
gears going down hill I doubt you'll miss the top end. Cheers

36 Cassette Gear Inches 12 81.5 14 69.9 16 61.1 18 54.3 21 46.6

Mattew,

I ran Pasela's 700x35c on my Handsome Devil for quite some time, with
fenders, and really liked them although a while ago I lost my mind, removed
my fenders and crammed some 700x47c Continental touring plus' on the Devil
and have been enjoying my poor mans fat bike, or is that fat mans poor
bike?, ever since. I don't think you can go wrong with either of the tires
you are considering. Pictures of my HD with Paselas and Contis

[RBW] Re: Single-Chainring Drivetrains

2014-03-25 Thread RoadieRyan
Converted my Handsome Devil from a Sugino XD triple to a compact double to
finally a single chain ring 1x9 set up 36t chain ring and 12-36t 9 speed
cassette. The gear inch range from 27.2 to 81.5 works well for hilly West
Seattle and I have had so few issues with chain drops that the Paul chain
keeper I bought for this set-up has never been mounted. It probably helps
that I am not pushing this bike to the limit, I am seldom out of the
saddle, or doing rapid shifts, on the other hand I am not babying it
either. Love the simplicity of the 1x9 set up and don't see ever using a
triple again, the closest I will get would be a 40x26t set up that Riv
sells.

my .02 cents

[RBW] Re: ISO: 32t or 34t 7 speed freewheel. Any good options?

2014-01-29 Thread RoadieRyan
I agree with Patrick, I like a more graduated gearing rather than 10 tooth
jump the mega range offers. I have used IRDs and like them and yes you
will pay more but you might not have as many "moments of regret" from
failed shifts or dropped chains when using the mega range. I find if you
shop around you can usually find a decent deal on the IRD's- under $50 Yes
it will still be 3x expensive as the Shimano mega range but you get what
you pay for.

Beautiful set up, that frame looks brand new. The Bleriot has special
place in my heart as it is the bike I found some place on the web years ago
that eventually led me to the Riv site and started my conversion from a guy
who thought he just had to have a Carbon bike so he could go "fast" to one
who appreciates the beauty and utility of a lugged steel bike, and riding
to put a smile on my face rather than trying setting a new course record.
Gotta find me a nice 57 cm Bleriot one of these days. Enjoy your new

[RBW] FS: Saddle, Bag, Pump, Pedals and Wool Jersey

2013-12-04 Thread RoadieRyan
I am cleaning out some odds and sods before the holidays, all of these are
either barely used or are still NIB.

   1.

*Carradice Barley saddlebag* –Green. (Retail $120) with *Bagman 2
support* (retail $45) . I mounted these to a bike and put maybe 20
miles on it before removing them so they are virtually new. Asking $90 for
both bag and support, shipping via USPS flat rate large box is $16.85
   2.

*Brooks Imperial Brown NIB* (Retail $125-150) Never been removed from
packaging. Asking $100. I can ship this via a USPS large box for $16.85
if I remove the saddle from its original packaging. If you want it in the
original brooks box let me know and I will get you a shipping quote.
   3.

*Nitto SS XL 100% wool jersey* (retail $90). I have worn this jersey
twice and washed it delicate/cold cycle and laid it flat to dry. Its in
great shape. Asking $60 and it will ship via USPS padded envelope for $5.95
   4.

*Shimano PD-M324 NIB *(retail $50-80). These have never been removed
from the box, asking $35. If I take them out of the packaging I can ship
them via USPS small flat rate box for $5.80.
   5.

*Leyzene Pressure Drive pump-Red (*retail $35). I really like these
pumps they are small but generate good pressure and work on either presta
or shraeder . They also fit easily in a bag or Jersey pocket. I have one
on my main bike but sold the bike I had this one for. Other than rattling
around in a bag it might have inflated one tire. Full disclosure I am
including the plastic water bottle mount but one one of the plastic screw
holes is broken. I think it can be made to work with a couple washers
sandwiching it but wanted to be upfront that it might be a loss. Asking
$15, it would ship via small USPS flat rate box for $5.80

[RBW] Re: Favorite Bike Build-up 'Secret'

2013-11-22 Thread RoadieRyan
As others have said a work stand for sure worth every penny.

with two Y wrenches; hex (4 5 6mm) and socket (8 9 10) I can just about
take apart an entire bike. My favorite tools.

I am usually a less is more kind of guy, but when it comes to bearing
grease more is better. I have found the factory built wheels I sometimes
use on old 10 speed rebuilds are miserly with the grease, sigh, do not
skimp on bearing grease.

The most important thing I have ever learned- when you get frustrated with
your buildwalk away..cool down...come back later. Never ceases to
amaze how much clearer a calm head sees.

[RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2013-10-11 Thread RoadieRyan
Bill, my first reaction to the diacompe rack was also - it's so tiny it's cute.
Ended up using it as a basket support on my sister-in-laws bike.

I have been refurbishing old 10 speeds for the last few years and have found
center pulls as good or better than side pulls.

[RBW] '80s Peugeot built for off road riding, limited Riv content

Tom, I always like to see stories about getting classic steel bikes back on
the road. It's always a bit surprising how much clearance a lot the 10/12
speeds have, I have run 37mm with fenders on a vintage Nishiki, Chapeau on your
build. I especially like the use of the Nexus rear hub.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders wear for cycling shorts for long rides?

2013-08-14 Thread RoadieRyan
It goes against "Doctrine" but I like bib shorts in particular Castelli or
DeMarchi, I find wool boxer briefs with MUSA shorts fine for rides under 20
miles but for the longer stuff I go to the bibs. I hear great things about
Ibex wool blend bibs and intend to try them some day. As for Jerseys 5
years ago it was basically 100% poly blend in my closet and now its nearly
all Merino wool jerseys/polos/t shirts love stuff and can't really imagine
wearing a poly jersey again.

[RBW] Re: Cork grips glue suggestions?

2013-08-07 Thread RoadieRyan
Your Mileage my vary but my experience was I needed two sets of cork grips
to get one set successfully mounted, and the instructions that talked about
gluing them onto the bars... HA I had to *grease *the bars to get the
$#)!@ things mounted. Granted once they were mounted and had a coat of
shellac they did look pretty darn good . My Advice - take it slow, have a
second set available, and don't use any glue until you have at least done a
dry fit. More likely you will need some grease.

[RBW] Riv'ed LHT

2013-06-12 Thread RoadieRyan
Nicely done good to start small and build up. I wanted a Riv and started with a
Handsome devil, very close in spec to the LHT, love the Devil and still want a
Riv. Enjoy riding with your bro that's the important piece.

[RBW] Re: San Juan Islands Tour Advice

2013-06-05 Thread RoadieRyan
As a West Seattleite I will say that there can be some good riding from
Southworth to Port Orchard but I think the Interurban trail to Whibey
Island was a good choice by Adam as it more directly gets them to good
Island riding. Enjoy Adam
