Re: [RBW] Planning first longish bike tour in Oregon. Suggestions?
Yeah Jan's backdoor is something I've wanted to do as well. However the Seattle to Puyallup bits leave a lot to be desired. Some nice views of Mt. Rainier. May isn't an amazing time, though this year there isn't likely to be any snow. Of course the coast could be plenty wet as well. Could go either way. Anyway all the routes have a lot of good stuff in it. I would maybe suggest ferry to Vashon Island and on the edge of the sound to Olympia and then cut over to intersect the route. I have a great Vashon to Oly route on my computer at home if you'd want that. -Robert Sent from my iPad On Feb 27, 2015, at 9:15 AM, rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com wrote: Planning first longish bike tour in Oregon. There is no ocean or ferries, which is really too bad, but it does have some spectacular climbs and gravel roads. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5639292 I'm hoping to finalize my dates and rough route tonight. The ferry from Tokeland to Wesport hasn't run in years, so he couldn't really get further down the coast from there. That being said 109 from Hoquim to Tokeland is not at all what I'd call much nicer than the 105. The 109 is quite hilly, has no shoulder and just as much if not more traffic. Re: [RBW] Planning first longish bike tour in Oregon. Suggestions?
Yeah I wouldn’t go that way in WA at all. Here’s a link to a Google Map with my preferred route: https://goo.gl/maps/zVT8U https://goo.gl/maps/zVT8U This has some great riding along Hood Canal, through the woods and small little towns and is pretty much more direct. I’ve done that in two-three days, staying in Shelton (slightly off the route) or camping at Potlatch State park. I’d personally do it over three days staying at Potlatch, then Lake Sylvia and finally Long Beach. Good luck, lots of great riding on your route. -Robert On Feb 25, 2015, at 8:18 PM, Shawn Granton urbanadventurelea...@gmail.com wrote: Mark, that route looks like it could be a good one. Hey an Ashland question for all of you who have done tours in this area and stopped there. Is there a good place to stay for the touring cyclist? Was reservations needed? If one showed up on a Monday or Tuesday (which it's looking like I will) is it easier? How about tickets to the plays? I haven't been to Ashland since the late 80s and it was always busy then, can't imagine it's any easier. [RBW] Re: 58 QB frame on CL (near-ish Seattle)
Hey gang, Thanks all for the comments and kind words. I was out on an S24O (more on that latter!) so just getting back to the list. Anyway to answer some questions that came up: Great job, Robert! The Quickbeam is an oddly addictive bicycle. What gear(s) are you running? Bryan Thanks Bryan - It's 48/38 chainrings and a 21 freewheel on the rear. I went a bit big on gearing as it's hilly in these parts and I figure I'd rather coast down hills than walk up them! So far this has worked out - I've tackled some reasonable, if not truly epic hills and so far haven't had to walk up. WETH erlhous...@gmail.com Apr 24 10:39AM -0700 Wow, that is a beautiful restoration! I really like the green saddle/bar tape with the orange frame. It appears the powder coating did not obscure the lug details any more than a paint job would have. Is that accurate when looking at the bike in person? I ask because I am considering powder coating a lugged frame. Hey thanks much, can't be happier with the color scheme. The powdercoating didn't obscure the lugs at all. When I researched this I read a few people mention they told the 'coaters to do it lightly and such to preserve it. So I brought it up with the fine folks at Forever Powdercoating and they said it wasn't an issue. They'd done plenty of bikes and I have to say it looks pretty much just how the frame did with the original paint. So I can endorse the powdercoating but no reason not to check with the 'coater about the thickness. cheers, Robert -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Frame Paint question
I'm looking at getting a frame powder coated and I want to get the orange used on the Quickbeam. I asked at Riv and they said they didn't have a specific code for the color. So has anyone had a bicycle powder coated in that color and what did you specify for it? According to Cyclofiend's Touch up Paint page Testors Competition Orange is close so I figure I can always bring in a swatch of that. [RBW] Re: FS: Baggins Bags, B67, etc
Figure I should send out an update. The Candybar bag and Saddle have sold but the Adam and Arkel bags are still available. I'm updating my original notes on these items with some info I forgot: 1) Rivendell Baggins Adam saddlebag - $125 shipped CONUS Classic Baggins bag, in good shape but plenty of beusage. I bought this used and fairly quickly determined that it was about the same capacity as my Paladin bag which I slightly prefer. So time to pass it along. It didn't come with the 2 front leather straps and I never replaced them so those won't be included. The straps for the seat post and saddle are all present. Acorn sells leather straps that look like they'd work. Pictures can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35237104136@N01/tags/bagginsadam/ 3) Arkel Laptop briefcase - $75 shipped CONUS This was the original Arkel laptop briefcase which uses their older (but still very effective) mounting hardware. I always used a raincover with this bag and thus it is in very good shape. One of the male buckles has a tong broken off but it still closes fine and would be an easy and inexpensive item to replace. It includes a raincover which is. much more worn looking but still repelling moisture just fine. This is the best laptop carrying bag out there, with an internal, suspended waterproof sleeve that your laptop slides into (and can be removed - I'd often take this with me when doing non-bicycle traveling). Sleeve fits typical 15 laptops, I used it with two Apple laptops a 15 Titanium Powerbook and an 15 Alumininum MacBook Pro. Pictures can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35237104136@N01/tags/arkellaptopbriefcase/ Paypal preferred for payment. All prices include shipping. Feel free to make offers. I'd also be willing to include any of these items in trade for a set of the old Baggins Pa Panniers in any sort of non-ripped condition. I always used a raincover with this bag and thus it is in very good shape. Pictures can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35237104136@N01/tags/arkellaptopbriefcase/ 4) A Brooks b.67 - $50 shipped CONUS Honey brown color. This sprung saddle is nicely broken in but has years if not decades of life left in it. I bought this around 2005 I think and the leather seems a lot thicker then the most recent Brooks I bought. A great saddle but a little wide for my sit bones so I eventually switched to a b.17. I kept it proofhided (but not overly so) and used a cover in the rain, so it's in great shape.. Pictures can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35237104136@N01/tags/brooksb67/ All prices include shipping. Feel free to make offers. I'd also be willing to include any of these items in trade for a set of the old Baggins Pa Panniers in any sort of non-ripped condition. [RBW] Bag Repair in Seattle
The zipper on my Hobo bag broke on tour last summer and I'm hoping to get it replaced. Anyone have any leads on someone or someplace that'll do that sort of job? Ideally in the Seattle area but I'd send it out to somebody if I had to. thanks, Robert -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Wool Leg Warmers
The weather is getting into post-tights temps and to my dismay I found my Riv Wool Leg-warmers were pretty much devastated by the moths. I really like these leg-warmers but I desperately need a new pair and Riv doesn't have them in stock. So who makes something equivalent (or does anyone know if Riv is going to get some in say the next couple of weeks?) thanks, Robert -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] re: The myth of the all-rounder.
I don't really think its a myth at all, though I guess really you aren't talking about the bicycle. Using myself as an example I own two bicycles, my Atlantis which I ride exclusively and then my old Novara Safari (another all-rounder type) which I ride only if my Atlantis is in the shop or has a flat when I'm already late for work. I do think the backup bicycle is pretty essential for me for those circumstance, but looking at my records its only gotten about a hundred miles a year. I clearly could just use the Atlantis and take the bus or something on those days, but I like the option. If I didn't already own the Safari when I got the Atlantis I probably would have just gotten a cheap garage sale bicycle for the back up purpose. Anyway I guess what I'm saying is that for me I can see owning two bicycles but I've never desired more. There have been occasions when I've ridden the Safari for a couple of weeks in a row and its poor fit leaves me sore and wishing my backup bicycle was as comfortable as my Atlantis. If though I got another better fit bicycle I'd sell the Safari. -Robert --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Busted Zipper
So the zipper on my Hobo Bag broke whilst on tour last month. This seems like something one could replace (preferably with a metal one) but I'm not really sure how to go about it. I don't think I can do it myself, I assume one needs a sewing machine. So any suggestions? -Robert --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Taking My Atlantis on Tour
Hey all, So once again I'm setting off on tour my my trusty Atlantis. Running about the same setup some of you might remember from my 2007 tour, but with of course some modifications based on lessons learned and a bit extra stuff as its a bit longer tour. Anyway I'll be blogging when I can from the road here: http://www.spiralcage.com/rootless and uploading pics from my iPhone here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35237104...@n01/sets/72157620815589593/ Also of course when I can. Anyway I'm hitting the road in just a couple of minutes, thanks for looking! -Robert --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] re: SF Question
Much appreciation to all who replied, that helps a lot. It sounds like the best route to go is to try to be convenient to the BART and just rely on that to get to the various places I want to go. I'll hunt for hotels accordingly. I'll also check out Priceline.com - I always forget about it. thanks again, Robert --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] SF Question
A question for the SF area RBWO-ers: Say you are coming into town via the Amtrak (the Emeryville station seems to be the closest to the city I believe) with one's bicycle and you wanted to see things such as Riv World Headquarters, SFMOMA and other art galleries. So any suggestions on where to stay area wise or actual hotel suggestions would be much appreciated. I'm pretty cool with cycling or walking around the city and definitely am cool with the BART and such. I think I'd rather be closer to the gallery zone (which seems to be within Misson/Market and 1st/4th) and BART/Bicycle out to other activities but I also don't want to fork over my first born. Anyway any and all advice is appreciated. thanks, Robert --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
