[RBW] I'll cross that bridge when I come to it (on my Legolas)

2009-08-30 Thread fiddlr40

The new bike path across the Benicia Bridge (SF Bay Area) opened
yesterday. I missed the opening day ride so I decided to ride it
today. The ride from my home to the south access goes by refineries
and looks like a bit of an industrial wasteland, but the ride was
still nice. The new bridge path is very nice and allows easier access
for bikes across the Sacramento River. What looks like a fun loop that
I will try another day is to cross the Benicia bridge and make your
way along the waterfront to the Carquinez bridge, which also has a
bike path. I got hungry on the return and was fortunate to find a good
taco truck open for business even though it was still fairly early
Sunday morning. Mmm, tacos al pastor and Mexican Coca-Cola (cane sugar
not corn syrup sweetened).

I posted a few photos to the Riv Flickr group. Unfortunately I forgot
my camera and only had a phone. Legolas posed with taco truck. This is
the copper color, which looks much better in person than in the photos
on the RBW site. I will post more pics when I find my good camera.
There are two Legolas' remaining at RBW, which will probably be the
last two, so if you've been sitting on the fence about one, go get it.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo Press on BikeRadar.com

2009-08-28 Thread fiddlr40

I stopped at Riv HQ on my way home from work and tried the Roadeo.
It's a little small for me but still a very sweet bike. Light, nimble,
and tracks steady. It rides a lot like my Legolas 59, but even with a
Brooks saddle it is noticeably lighter to lift. If I hadn't bought one
of the last Legolas', I'd get one of these.

[RBW] FS: Paul Flatbed, as seen on a QB

2009-08-23 Thread fiddlr40

I've decided I'm more of a bag person than a basket person so I'm
selling my Paul Flatbed. These are very attractive, but do not have
the load capacity of a CETMA. This will carry your case of Sierra
Nevada but not your full keg. A picture of it on my Quickbeam is at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/20986...@n04/3448531380/

For my commuting purposes I'm going to use a Sackville medium seat
bag.

New these are $199 plus shipping. Mine is $125 shipped.

[RBW] Re: A Little Roadeo Preview - QA with GP

 http://ramblings.cyclofiend.com/?p=376

 ---

 Hi Jim,
We got the first prototype Roadeo yesterday, and Mark built it up and rode
it, likes it a lot. We'll have something on the site soon, but in the
meantime, here are some Assumed FAQ's:

 1. Why does it look so unRivendellish?
 a. It IS steel, it IS lugged, it HAS a fork crown and a nice fork rake. You
CAN fit a 35mm tire. It has longish (by race bike standards) chainstays, and
a lowISH bottom bracket. It has a clamp-on front derailer. All quite in
keeping with all of our bikes.

 2. Threadless?
 a. Done it before, with the Legolas. The Roadeo will be available threaded
or threadless, same price, your choice.

 3. That price?
 a. $2,000 frame and fork. And we'll have some package options---likely a
club-rider-racerish package with a road double and SRAM brifters  for around
 $4,200; and a country-ish version, probably with a triplefor $3,600.
Specs to be determined, but one racey, one normalwith mixitup
 flexibility, whatever one likes.

 3. Who makes it?
 a. 'ford.

 4. Colors?
 a. white with red; white with blue; any color you like except white or
 cream, with cream.

 5. Tubing?
 a. Mix of Reynolds 725 and TrueTemp OX Plat. As thin as I/Grant could stand
to go. (0.65 butts in the tt and dt, with 0.45 bellies)

 6. Frame weight?
 a. Well, man, the prototype frame here weighs 4lb 3oz, in a 55cm. Now, there
are ways to trim another half pound off it, but not without getting super
ridiculous. We're shooting for 3.9xinfinity pounds, and think we
can get there by trimming a lug, using a narrower crown, monkeying around
with the chainstay brake bridge, possibly using a different bb shell and
seat tube. But that's it! Then it'll weigh what it weighs, and it's over.

 7. Whole bike?
 a. as shown, 20.7. with four ounces off the frame, three off the fork (we
can do this easily on a threadless), and something else, we can get it to
19.9 pounds with Jack Brown greens.

Some spec notes: The best brakes for it are the Tektro Bigmouth 57s. They're
super light, and allow 35mm+ tires, releasable without deflating. The photo
shows a SRAM crank--Mark picked all the parts for it--but we may go with a
D/A compact. It's all up to Mark (I just designed the frame).

Geometry: Eventually the particulars will go onto our site, but I hate
taking about decimal metric numbers as though the decimals matter and the
numbers reveal the essence of the frame. I don't like stubby chainstay even
a little, but I don't want my preference for 44.5+cm chainstays to smite
this bike before it leaves the gates, and in the big pic 43/43/5 is plenty
fine, and if it works for Mark, it'll work for anybody. The rest of the
numbers are right down the middle of our lane, with a slight Mark-'fluence,
because Mark has that 'fluence, and he knows. I may get a 59, so I jogged a
little with the numbers for the 59, designing it just for me, but it'll be
fine for anybody who fits it. I think the bb is a few mm lower than the 57
and the 61---77 or 78 instead of 75. Not significant, but it'll allow me the
clearance I want with the fatties I'll ride on it.

 Who the bike is for:
Club riders who weigh under 210lbs and who aren't looking to load it up or
ride it on trails. We have other bikes for that, and the Roadeo is for road
riding with minimal gear. There are no rack eyelets (reinforces the message)
but there are fender eyelets on the dropouts.

ANYBODY is welcome to come by and ride it, and we should have another
prototype in a month or so. Maybe another Mark's size, or maybe mine, not
 sure.

It is every bit as zippy as any road bike, and a lot  more useful, comfy,
safe...and lower priced than a lot of them..

There are hotels in older buildings that cater to European tourists in
SF and are in the $100 per night range, which in my experience is
pretty cheap for lodging in a big city. Hotel Rex, Hotel Carlton, Post

[RBW] Quickbeam with Schwalbe Big Apples

2009-04-16 Thread fiddlr40

I just put Big Apples (700x50) on my Quickbeam:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/20986...@n04/3448531380/in/pool-quickbeam

It's a tight fit, especially on the chain stays but it's working fine.
I could probably get fenders on too but I'm not going to try that for
a while. These tires are a really comfortable ride and they feel fast
once I'm up to speed. Acceleration is noticeably slower but that's
okay, I'm not racing anyone.

Funny story: The Big Apples replaced a set of Speedblends. I took the
Speedblends to a swap meet, not really expecting them to sell. A small
bidding war broke out, though, and the winner was a fixie rider who
was going to powdercoat his rims to match.

The Quickbeam is a great, versatile bike. You should definitely get

Is a fixie / ss just a pipe dream for a guy like me ? The beauty of
the QB is that extra small ring which I'd probably spend a whole lotta

Besides all types of riding, I'd also be nice weather commuting too on

I am serious about wanting to see photos of broken carbon, btw. And this
raises a question about carbon fiber: I suppose that part of the problem is

isn't stupidly light, would it have any advantage over steel?

Here are some photo links to busted carbon, they aren't too hard to

At Riv HQ, they did some fencing with a steel fork and carbon fork.

something to be said for a comfortable frame w/ useful braze-ons and

definitely a stretch for me to buy the Atlantis when I did, but I have
never once regretted it, and I have long since absorbed the cost.

As others have mentioned, the Long Haul Trucker complete is well
thought out and hard to beat at that price point (my girlfriend and a

You'll likely find much on Craigslist in your size, and while there
are some deals to be had, I'd encourage you to check 'em out
thoroughly before biting.  In my experience, used bikes require
compromises at the least and pricey upgrades at the most.  Check the
wheels out well, particularly if they're old.  A super deal can
quickly become a money pit.  But if you have the patience and
 tolerance...

I think it's smart you want to buy locally.  You've got a great
