[RBW] Jan's post

2020-06-02 Thread j.schwartz
It appears that Jan's post was taken down. Either he took it down himself
or the moderator did.

For those of you that missed it , Jan is offering to pass on the revenue
from Bicycle Quarterly subscriptions to Black Lives Matter
LINK HERE

If his original post was taken down by anyone other than Jan, I find this
deeply disturbing.

There are currently active posts on this RBW Owners Bunch google group
related to fly fishing rods, "wrenching for the homeless" , Nikon cameras
and someone seeing advice on a recumbent bike for their dad

None of those are really in line with what this group is supposed to
discuss.

Jan is offering a magazine that most, if not all, members would be
interested in and letting the group know that currently he's donating those
funds to an organization.Grant has done similar promotions to inspire
his customer base to buy items that would benefit a cause.

If the cause Jan is supporting doesn't appeal to you, then don't buy the
magazines. But, if this group can't handle the content of Jans' post or
is somehow offended by the prospect of supporting Black Lives Matter, then
that is a sad reflection on the nature of this online community.

I suspect this group is comprised of *mostly* older white men. That is
important to keep in check when analyzing why this post may have been
removed.
I would like to know why it is gone.
I do hope Jan removed it himself.

Maybe headset installs and maintenance? also BB install and removal.
 (also the associated tools needed)
I guess most people on this list are using threaded headsets and sq.tape
bb's.
It's sort of the last frontier of home mechanics since the frames often
come with the headsets and bottom brackets installed.

[RBW] Re: Chocomoose Versions

2020-04-06 Thread j.schwartz
One more question about this bar...for anyone..
Could someone who is currently using the bar give me a sense of the forward
reach for the hand position that is the curved & dropped area when the
stem is moderately low to slammed?
I know this would change depending on head tube angle ,, etc but we all
ride similar bikes.
I'm currently riding a 55 Appa and I'm on the lower end of the sizing
spectrum for that bike.
It's got 29x2.1 tires and it's both tall and long , for me. Not *too* tall
or long but I wouldn't put a long stem on this bike unless I was bars that
swept back generously.
Currently, I'm running flared drops with one of those Analog 30mm quill
stems.
I'd like to know if the hand position on the bars where the curves that
drop down would be too stretched out for me.
thank you

I think the optical illusion with this bar and photos is based on how much

To my eye, and knowing what I know about how I like to set up my bikes, a
bike with this bar set up high doesn't seem that it would be comfortable to
me, however on some of the photos I've seen where it's pretty low or even
slammed, it looks like it would sync up with my riding style. Also my
bikes have pretty long head tubes, (first gen SH, Apppaloosa, 2019 Clem)
Do you have a sense on what the vertical extension would be if the moose
were slammed?
Thanks for the reach number.

[RBW] Re: Chocomoose Versions

2020-04-04 Thread j.schwartz
Thanks all
Maybe I am thinking of the BoscoMooses.
The context with which I'm asking the question is really just about knowing
as I'm interested in potentially getting a set and when looking at photos
of other bikes online with this bar, some look slightly different to my eye
than others. Really it's that sometimes, when viewing a photo of the
chocomoose, it looks like it would work well for me (I like the
downward/flipped drop of the bars) and sometimes it doesn't .
Only one way to find out.
I didn't know blue lug sold those bars new. Very interesting.

Greetings,
hope everyone is staying safe and sane out there.
Question about the Chocomoose bars.
Were there multiple versions of this integrated stem/bar handlebar? Was
there an initial version that was improved later on?

just curious is one being moved into a different category than the other?
The published Geo numbers are slightly different, but are they different
enough to be two different bikes?
I suspect a 2º difference in HT angle is sufficient to affect the handling
of a bike, what about 1/2º difference in ST angle?
Are they both touring bikes?

[RBW] Re: New vs. old Homer geometry, ride characteristics

2019-11-17 Thread j.schwartz
I don't have much to say on ride characteristics bc I've never ridden an
AHH, but...as far as aesthetic design goes, I have an interesting take.
I purchased my first Riv in late 2008. It was the first gen SH , the green
and gold one.
I think it was their first "expanded" geo bike. I was really visually
turned off on upsloping tube but at about half the cost of the AHH (and the
fact that it had cantis), it made more sense for me to get that one.
Fast forward to over 10 years later and now my bike design eye has totally
shifted. I find horizontal top tubes unattractive because I know they'd be
more uncomfortable for my riding style.
I still have that SH and have had other Riv's come and go. I also have a
silver 55 Appaloosa which in many ways is an evolved SH and I think both
bikes with their 6º (or so) up slope look "correct" and beautiful.

[RBW] compatibility question: double FD on triple

2019-11-17 Thread j.schwartz
Greetings,

Curious if the group thinks this on-sale Claris "double" front derailleur
would work well with a Riv Silver 44/34/24 triple crankset on a Clem L?
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/garage-sales-parts/products/claris-double-front-derailleur

In my experience, cranksets with smaller large chainwheels don't always
require a "triple" derailleur with such a big cage.
thank you

[RBW] replacing my old B+M dyno light with what?

2019-10-29 Thread j.schwartz
I have an old Busch & Muller Lumotec Cyo dynolight from about 2012. It was
one of the earlier LED headlights with a good beam at the time but it was
eclipsed by newer models basically every year. Still, it's been a great
light for my purposes all these years. I'm going to replace it on my main
touring bike and it will still be used but on a different bike.
Curious what others are using and liking,. I don't need or want to buy the
latest and greatest...i.e. most expensive dyno light out there. Just
looking for an updated high quality light for mixed terrain p.m. riding
both in town and out.
The same goes for my rear B+M toplight.
thank you

[RBW] Dustin Harbin's Teeth and Face

2019-08-24 Thread j.schwartz
I was pleasantly surprised to see Grant's re-posting of Dustin Harbin's
(dharbin) Op-Ed in the Times today as well as his Go Fund Me page
https://www.rivbike.com/blogs/peeking-through-the-knothole/aug-20-no-26-lugs-new-bikes-used-bikes
Dusty is an old friend of mine and one of the kindest, most charming, and
talented people I know.
He a cartoonist and you can find his work here
https://dharbin.com
He was in a bad bike wreck earlier in the summer which caused his lower jaw
to break from the rest of his skull and is on the mend following treatment
He posted in the NY Times today about his experience being billed full
price for his injuries due to lack of insurance and going to a Crowdfunding
site to make that happen
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/23/opinion/crowdfunding-health-care.html

Rivendell is crediting half of the dollar amounts to donations made to him.
Amazing.
Please consider donating

[RBW] What's the latest in 700c fenders? Planet Bike Cascadia ALX (50mm), PDW Full Metal (45mm) on a Rambouillet?

2019-08-09 Thread j.schwartz
I have some used Planet Bike cascades ALX aluminum fenders with he built in
flaps and stays that Id be happy to sell if you’re interested .
I used them on my Hillborne for about a year and a half...and they were very
solid and pretty carefree. I liked them a lot.
They are black like the link you posted .
Best
 Jason
