2013-03-04 Thread Bryan
Fenders in LA with me, too, at least on my commuter. The streets here are
always filled with run-off from the lawn sprinklers of the rich and
clueless, and who knows what else. I don't want that stuff splashing on my
feet and legs. Every once in a while, it rains here, and when it does the
streets flood almost instantly.

I grab my Quickbeam almost every day for my commute. I don't want to think
about shifting when I'm riding to work. I just want to pedal. I like the
reliability and the fact that I'm always in gear.

A local mega miler here in ABQ "nine inches in the rare year we are
not in a drought", Gary "It was a bad year; only nine thousand miles."
Blakely installed fenders on his Trek and kept them year 'round; he
found he crossed enough irrigation runoff puddles to make them worth
while. But then, at 10K+ miles on a normal year, you'd probably cross
a lot of everything.

I kept Honjos on the commuter Riv until they broke and I didn't bother
to replace them.

Good points, Jim.

I think it's just our nature to try to put things in little boxes. If we
want to define a "city bike", all we can really do is list features that
might best serve a particular individual in a particular city. Would
you call a messenger's ratty old fixie NOT a city bike? He probably
gets more use out of it than any commuter does on their sensible bike.
Is a bomb-proof, 26"-wheeled, fendered, fully-lit, racked, 5 speed bike
better?  Maybe, but for whom?  Personally, I don't need all that;
someone else may.

All of this, circling around to NAHBS, shows that we all like to dabble
in the "what if". I went to NAHBS to two solid days last year; I saw a
huge variety of ideas. Some of the stuff is artsy, look-what-I-can
build kind of stuff; other bikes were so well designed that it's hard to
believe anyone could ever come up with anything better.

When you come right down to it, who cares who wins what category at
NAHBS? Everything that won something was exquisitely built, a lot of it
is innovative, and some of it was actually practical. It's all
subjective, but I'm glad it's all being done. The industry is blooming
with creativity!

Re: [RBW] Latest BLUG post (2/28)

2013-03-03 Thread PATRICK MOORE
This has become a very interesting thread. I'm surprised at how many
choose single speeds, fixies, or at least prefer simple drivetrains.
Me, I chose fixed simply because I love riding fixed -- I had the '03
Curt custom converted locally to a fixed drivetrain when I converted
it from 1X10 gofast to daily commuter.

Several said that choice depends on circumstances (as well as
preferences); true, too. The Novara Fusion that I bought for a friend
late last year is actually a very decent commuting bike (8 speed hub,
dyno hub + front and rear lights, disks, fenders, chain guard, rack,
bell, belted tires and thorn-proof tubes, all this included, but no
damned suspension or other unecessary gimmicks) but, even if one
prefered this genre, trying to schlep such a thing up several miles of
hill, or against a stiff headwind for several miles, would (IMO)
quickly drive one to despair. (I put ~12 miles on it myself, longest
ride 10 miles).

That said, for short, flat, slow cruising with a lot of stop and
start, I can see that a fully dressed Yves or Betty or Sam with
Albatrosses might be nice -- after all, there is no reason why even
short distance utility bikes can't be very nice ones. And I realize
that some on this list ride such bikes far longer distances than I do
mine.

Keep the opinions coming! We should start a photo library of Rivendell
commuters. (A few years ago on the Boblist I set up a library of
beaters if anyone wants to see it. Some interesting bikes and a huge
variety.)

Next question, class: what is the worst commuter that you've ridden?

700c 32 to about 38' Lower trail with poteur style rack, Paul center pull or
mini-v brakes, single speed or 1x at most 6' Jitensha or similar bars, dyno hub
with headlight. Unless I am in LA, fenders.

[RBW] Latest BLUG post (2/28)

2013-03-02 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I just saw that thanks to Off the Beaten Path's link to Grant's very
good review of the Herse book. The following article, on city bikes
and the needless frou frou of many NAHB creations, is also very good
as are his ruminations on what makes up a good City Bike. I don't
agree with him completely on the City Bike (my credentials, fwtw: I
started urban riding at age 12 or so in New and Old Delhi, India where
traffic was more urban than any other place else I've seen) but have
to admit that his criteria are very arguable [that means: one can make
a very good argument for them].

What, per curiosity, are y'all's (that's all y'all's) ideas about the
ideal city bike? Mine (this is of course both very personal and
depends on one's commuting situation) includes lowish drop bars for
our winds (nothing to make one despair as having to ride into a 25 mph
headwind for miles and miles) and a fixed gear just 'cause I like it,
dynamo lights (serious omission, Grant) and a permanent rack or
saddlebag but not both. Fenders, sure, why not, but then here in high
desert ABQ we've been having a drought where we get only half to 2/3
of our annual 9 inches. Oh, and tires no less than 28 mm but no fatter
than 35, leaning to good rolling rather than puncture resistance
(because if you want to be flat free out here, you'll be riding, as I
know some to ride, either an old tire stuffed into the outer tire, or
else belted tire + thorn proof tube + sealant, and who the hell wants
that?)

I'd pay good money to have the Reader four or even twice a year. I
think I liked it as much as, perhaps even more than, BQ.
