[RBW] Re: AHH 2.0 w/ Modern Looking Nitto Rack

2013-08-12 Thread SMP
Good to know... I think I'll do the same during my upcoming trip to the US
(buy Schmidt lighting wire + fancy quick disconnects). Sad that I have to
go to America to buy German parts, because I am still not sure about how to
ask for these things in European bike shops.

with zip ties. I mounted my quick disconnect on the front rack, it was the
 easiest place to hide it.

Did the taillight come with enough wiring to route all the way down the

the same, because I have SS couplers. (Might as well make everything

It was a pretty simple job and I did not get worked up about it being
pro level work. I removed the existing light's internals, sawed the
Supernova tail light mounting tabs off so it would fit inside the housing,
ran the wire out the back and used a heavy duty 2 part epoxy to attach the
light the the back plate of the housing. after the epoxy cured. I
surrounded the light w/ silicone to take up some dead space and to help
 adhere the light as well.

Since I run my wire's externally, I ran the wire over the fender and
 down the fender stay.

The rack works fine with my size 11.5 feet and my Arkel Utility Basket

the mounting tang gets hung up on the rear quick release. I mat still
 make

Re: [RBW] Re: AHH 2.0 w/ Modern Looking Nitto Rack

2013-08-05 Thread Steve Palincsar
It's news to me that center pull (or, for that matter, cantilever)
brakes have a complicated cable routing that interferes with handlebar
bags. I have had four bikes with such brakes, two with center pull (one
bolt-on Mafac Raid, the other brazed-on Paul Racers) and two with
cantilevers (wide profile old-time Shimano Deore XT) that I've used the
largest size Berthoud bags with, entirely without problems due to cable
routing.

The last time I had the bike with brazed-on Paul Racers serviced, I had
the pads changed and in the process the LBS managed to totally ruin the
feel of the brakes: spongy beyond belief. I brought the bike back, and
a more experienced mechanic was able to restore the original feel
(without excess squeal, by the way) in a matter of a few minutes. I'm
not sure I'd call that fussy on the part of the brakes; it's possible
to misadjust most things if you are incompetent.

Steve, eliminate the first and last sentences in this post, and the

the mounting tang gets hung up on the rear quick release. I mat still make
the cut in the future, we'll see. Hope this link works.

[RBW] Re: AHH 2.0 w/ Modern Looking Nitto Rack

2013-08-05 Thread David Hays
Very nice build Brian.
What kind of front bag is that. It looks large without being overwhelming.

2013-08-05 Thread SMP
What a timely post! I am actually in the same dilemma, where I have a
Supernova up front, and wanted to get a fender-mounted taillight. Alas, I
only recently came to realize that my headlight is only compatible with a
Supernova tail light. I had no idea you could place the Supernova
taillight into BM housing. Do you have any up-close photos or a 'how to'
of this setup?

Thanks! I really like the Hold Fast straps and have them on a second bike
as well. Clipless SPD always seem to aggravate an old running injury in my
knee, so these are a welcome solution for me. I like pedal retention but I
also like being able to ride in most any shoe in my closet. I am looking
forward to warm feet this winter!

clips and straps, which have totally rusted out now).

[RBW] Re: AHH 2.0 w/ Modern Looking Nitto Rack

2013-08-05 Thread Brian Campbell
Here are a couple of bad photos of how I did it.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/76454470@N05/8358830287/

It was a pretty simple job and I did not get worked up about it being pro
level work. I removed the existing light's internals, sawed the Supernova
tail light mounting tabs off so it would fit inside the housing, ran the
wire out the back and used a heavy duty 2 part epoxy to attach the light
the the back plate of the housing. after the epoxy cured. I surrounded the
light w/ silicone to take up some dead space and to help adhere the light
as well.

Since I run my wire's externally, I ran the wire over the fender and down
the fender stay.

Looks very nice. Pray tell, what about the function of the Tektros do you
prefer over that of the Paus's?

The Pauls while stiffer, were more of a pain to get set up correctly. I
seemed to be forever between spongy feel and squealing like mad. I did have
them working well and then I swapped the wheelset to the current one w/
different rim widths and profiles and had to re-adjust again. Frankly, I am
lazy when it comes to this kind of thing. Also, the Pauls required more
complicated cable routing and it got in the way of the handlebar bag. I
toyed with the idea of getting them brazed on but just figuerd it would be
better to go ride the bike rather than turn it into a shrine.

[RBW] Re: AHH 2.0 w/ Modern Looking Nitto Rack

2013-08-04 Thread dougP
Brian:

See if you can get the fender rack struts to share the lower (rear)
mounting eyelet. If you look at the Nitto strut, the second hole is
directly above the lower one, so you can drop the rack perhaps an inch
(?). The way the rack strut angles, you have to start cutting it to the
rest of the holes. That then moves the rack forward.

I'm still playing with my R-26 on my 58 Atlantis. I'm trying to get it as
low as possible for clearance at the seat and have been reluctant to cut
the struts. Hard to take a hacksaw to a $150 chrome plated rack.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't heard the paul racers were fussy that way.
Well I knew how the cable routing differed, but the other stuff, not so
much.
