[RBW] Re: Copenhagen wheel Rivs vs ebike
FYI the “braking assistance” as they refer to it in the app can be adjusted for sensitivity or turned off altogether. I happen to really like that feature as I rarely use my own brakes except when coming to a full stop at a light etc. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Copenhagen wheel Rivs vs ebike
Jim, that's a good point I forgot (I don't have the wheel anymore). When coasting you don't actually keep your feet still and it's easy to activate that backpedal braking unintentionally. It bothered me a bit because I kept slowing myself down. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Copenhagen wheel Rivs vs ebike
Copenhagen wheels incorporate regenerative braking - when backpedaling, there is extra resistance in the freehub caused by a battery charging mechanism. The charge supplied is minimal but many people like the idea of this feature. However, it means that the chain is very prone to slackness and bunching when backpedaling, especially in smaller cogs. This shouldn't be having an effect when simply coasting, but your phenomenon may be related in some way. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Copenhagen wheel Rivs vs ebike
Check your chain length, too. Usually with my wheel I was spinning out and coasting in a too-short top gear, which is big/small ring/cog. You might have just enough extra chain going on in combination with a little drag on the freehub to cause the slack. But make sure big/big still works! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Heavy lube and cold temps had that effect on my drivetrain in winter...I think the free hub has more drag than a standard free hub. Did you strip your chain of the factory oil they put on it? I’d apply several rounds of a light lube with lots of solvent in the formula. Something like clean ride or T9. That might eliminate the resistance causing the slack chain. I had considered going to a clutch derailleur but I always forget because I don’t have issues until I switch to heavy lube and get cold temps (sub freezing) Hope that helps? Re: [RBW] Re: Copenhagen wheel Rivs vs ebike
I'm intrigued by the Copenhagen wheel myself, though for the present solely in an academic way. But I think that having a Rivendell with assist would beat another electric bike. Me, I think I'd use 60 mm Big Apples. They are pretty darned bulletproof and you can run them soft enough to absorb bumps (that is, about 25 psi; I don't know why Schwalbe puts a 35 min pressure label on their 60 mm tires, since 35 in such fat tires is rock hard. Me, I say 25 or 27 psi max). I can not recommend the Copenhagen wheel enough for any Riv application. Joe was correct I initially had my NOS purchased single speed on my Quickbeam. My personal experience was it extended my SS rides into 35-40 miles vs mid 20’s. I personally have left it in ECO mode after one experimentation with the other boost modes. While riding it just feels like a continuous tailwind of sorts. Mostly noticed while taking off from stops or attempting accelerations for any occasion. It has now been moved onto a 68cm Bombadil and performs just as magnificently. Looking to pick up a 26 inch multigeared one to go on my wife’s 53cm Atlantis to potentially lengthen the distance we cover on 90 minute -2hrs rides together. Re: [RBW] Re: Copenhagen wheel Rivs vs ebike
That's an average range for most ebikes, and can be stretched considerably on the Copenhagen with judicious use of the Eco and 0 settings. One of the things I like about it on my Riv is it still pedals like a Riv, I can ride with very little assistance on flats and click it off completely for descents. That said, I *am* an urban rider. [RBW] Re: Copenhagen!
Patrick, that was the "drivetrain" for the derailleurs on one side and (I think) the brakes on the other! The frame caught my attention but those handlebars definitely drew me into the shop to ask questions. Olof, I agree with you about Sogreni's bars as well as the geometries put the handlebars pretty low except on his Shatterhand bikes. His shop was neat to explore, he was fun to talk to and I thought his accessories were great. He told me I couldn't build a set of wood fenders like his and then took one and twisted it into a pretzel-like shape without it cracking. He also had stainless, brass, copper-plated brass and diamondplate steel fenders. Thought the diamond plate fenders would give a Pugsley a very Mad Max aesthetic. I really liked his bells and chain guards which were a simple steel rod bent and mounted on machined brass stand-offs. The only problem is that you need to have your frame drilled out to mount it (although he does sell clamp-on brackets as well. I also saw only a handful of drop bar racy bikes and mountain bikes. The beausaged city bike appeared to rule in Copenhagen. Can't wait to get back there during warmer months so I can join in the biking fun/chaos. OT... the museums, churches and castles of Copenhagen are also wonderful to see (my wife is an Art Historian). I can't say the art collections were great but the museums were beautiful. We also enjoyed taking trains out to Roskilde for the Viking Ship Museum and nearby Cathedral (where the Danish royalty are buried) and up to Helsingør for the Kronborg Castle, Maritime Museum (cool building!) and Lousiana Museum (a little farther down the coast). I can also recommend the Designmuseum Danmark, the World Clock in Copenhagen's City Hall and the shops Illums Bolighus, Normann Copehagen (showroom in an old cinema), Designer Zoo. The design sensibilities of the culture was so impressive. Oh, and if you are looking for a cocktail, I can't recommend Lidkoeb highly enough. It was a 3-story old apothecary building with a cozy fireplace, outdoor seating and a whiskey bar on the third floor (at the top of some very twisty spiral staircase). Fun trip. [RBW] Re: Copenhagen!
I have been to Copenhagen in the summer and it was spectacular. It had a profound impact on my views of cycling. For one thing once I got back I stopped using cycling specific clothing. As John says, if a woman in a fur coat can ride a bike, why do I have to wear lycra tights and a Shower Pass rain jacket? It was after this trip that I decided to buy my Sam Hillborne with Albatross bars and big basket on the front. In the thousands upon thousands of bikes I saw there, not one dropped bar handlebar could be found. That in of itself should tell you something. As for the Pedersen bike, I have ridden one and it was in my top three best riding bikes I ever had the experience of trying. It is like nothing you have tried before. The suspended seat is very comfortable. Copenhagen is my dream city. Unfortunately it wasn't my wife's dream city because if it was I would live there in a heartbeat. Be forewarned it is expensive, but there is a good reason for that, that is best left for another day. That trip changed my life. RE: [RBW] Re: Copenhagen!
Nice to see your pictures! Though having visited Copenhagen now and then since 1957 and even ridden drop-bar bicycles there (and even bought two bikes there, with drop bars)I can assure that they do exist. Pedersens ARE nice to ride – I have done so – though taking another road to design. Sögreni on the other hand are in my view not Rivendellian, traditional frame design but more catering to his own minimalist design than practicality and comfort. His bars are murder! [RBW] Re: Copenhagen!
My suggestion is to go sometime other than the dead of winter. Bike rentals are plentiful but my wife was not game for riding on slush, snow and ice this trip. We hope to go back at a warmer time and rent bikes the whole time (many hotels have bike rentals or a shop very close where you can rent). The one thing you can't rent were the Pedersens they sell at Christiania Cycles (http://www.pedersen-bike.dk/). Funky place in a very funky part of town. As for the gears under those handlebars, I'm not totally sure but I believe one operated the rear derailleur and the other the brakes. One part of the lever was for upshifting and the other for downshifting with your thumb (kind of like brifters). I think it was a 1x5 set up. The components were older Campy that had been polished out to a mirror shine. Can't recall for sure but I believe the brakes were operated with the right hand levers. John, Thanks for sharing! Copenhagen is on my bucket list, maybe someday. The bike in the window is super cool! What's up with the chain and gears on the underside of the handle bar?
