[RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out
Correction - there is a link to the deposit page in the new 2018 copy for every made to order frame page. Customs still prompt you to contact the crew. I noticed the lead time-related copy for each frame has been updated for 2018. Lead time estimates on the stouter made-to-order frames (Hunq, Atlantis) have improved to 4-6 months, while it appears they've deliberately withheld estimates for the lighter frames (AHH, Roadeo). Could be the true temper thing. Frame deposit page still live and updated to reflect 2018 pricing, but accessible only via search (https://www.rivbike.com/search?q=deposit). I get the impression one should be able to kick off a custom frame no problem, you just have to pick up the phone. A 9-month wait time for a stock frame might dissuade potential customers. [RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out
"Out of stock" takes away the ability to click and enter payment on a made-to-order frame. The message I get from this is that Riv is not taking deposits on customs, nor full payment on Hunqapillars. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out
I actually found it odd that the frames appeared to be "In Stock" since I knew the made-to-order frames weren't actually sitting in Walnut Creek. With the change in optics, I would now hope that the 63 Roadeo is on a hook in their warehouse, and if I were to put the comically-large-for-me frame in my cart and pay up, I could then hop on BART and pick it up much sooner than many months later. I do agree that some copy change would make things crystal clear, but at least this way nobody has the affordance to pull the trigger on a frame they (somehow) don't realize is 9 months out. FWIW, Rivendell took my deposit on a Waterford canti-Hilsen on Jan 31. Expected turnaround on the Hilsen holds at 6-9 months, OK by me as I have a continuous stream of life stuff to distract me in the next few months. [RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out
I suspect as I think Bill alludes to, that Rivendell is in a unique position because of the number of employees and diverse product selection compared to a complaint like BMC. Maintaining payroll for 13 employees must strain cash flow whereas some of the competitors don’t have that pressure. I assume the custom frames would be low risk in terms of cash flow however since customers provide the upfront deposit. I am hoping to hear an update soon on the Hail Mary. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out
There is no question that building bikes in batches brings the price down and ties up cash in inventory. The easy thing to do in theory that is hard in practice, is to have a good solid number that represents your absolute max possible inventory in dollars. For the sake of argument, let's say that number is 1 million dollars. Any small business that thinks their MAX inventory might be $1M, needs to keep enough cash on-hand such that their Current Inventory + Current Cash >= $1M. That way, no matter what you need to buy, no matter what bills need to be paid, you'll have the cash on hand to do it. This means you have to have a good ceiling number, you have to have the disciplne to gather and maintain that right amount of cash on hand, and you have to have the discipline to never violate your ceiling number. The bigger the business, the harder that is. A tiny operation like Black Mountain Cycles does a good job of that. Mike brings in a batch of frames when he needs them, and always has the cash on hand to pay for them. He's got a good number, and good discipline, and never scrambles, but he also only has two models of frame. OK 2.5 models, but soon to be 4.5 models. More importantly, he has one employee, himself. My sense - just a sense, I have no inside info - is Riv kinda over the whole custom-and-Waterford thing, and would rather design, order and sell the lower-cost Taiwan bikes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I was surprised to hear about the long wait time w/ Waterford. I do recall Box Dog Bikes had a successful partnership with Winter Bicycles to do batches of the Pelican. [RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out
The Roadeo only has a 63 in stock, it looks like; otherwise, the rest of the Roadeo sizes, the Atlantis, A Homer Hilsen, and the Hunqapillar are all shown w/ 5 or 6 to a 9-month wait time. I'd not thought about the True Temper side of things, since the Silver tubing should be coming into play, but, that may be part of the holdup... they may be considering seeing if Toyo might come back into sourcing, or maybe getting Mark Nobilette to build them as needed, though that'd be competing against their customs, too. I don't know any of that, no insider info, just hypothesizing out loud... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. This is possible. TrueTemper is long gone IMO. [RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out
I would think a comment to call Riv directly might work better than a "sold out" notation. Custom builders that I have seen often have a place to put in a deposit online and then a follow up with the builder for specific specs. Just struck me as odd but perhaps it is not.
