[RBW] Re: Do you think MUSA-RIVbike used sale values will change due to the current non-MUSA production bikes?

For my money, the most critical feature is threaded fork, followed by 72 degree
seat tube.

[RBW] Re: Do you think MUSA-RIVbike used sale values will change due to the current non-MUSA production bikes?

2018-07-29 Thread Brewster Fong
What I would be concerned about is offering less features like lugs. For
me, Rivendells have always been well made and have nice lugs. However, I
haven't been on the site in a while, but notice that some of the new frames
are now TIG-welded or have very simple lugs?! Really?! That's like BMW
making their 1 Series cars front wheel drivebut I digress. So not
having nice lugs would be more a deal breaker than whether the frames was
made by Waterford, Toyo or Taiwan (Maxway?).

Btw, MIT is not all bad. My local LBS (A Bicycle Odyssey in Sausalito) is
having a big sale on all its frames right now and they carry an interesting
Taiwanese frameset from a company called Rikulau. They make a Reynolds 953
and 931 stainless steel framesets that are really nice. If I didn't
recently buy a used Della Santa, I would be very tempted.

Also, for those who are not paranoid, some of the best carbon framesets are
also made in Taiwan. Giant makes carbon frames for just about everyone on
the planet. They're one of the leaders in carbon fiber design. So MIT
should be a concern, more about what features are being offered.

Good Luck!

[RBW] Re: Do you think MUSA-RIVbike used sale values will change due to the current non-MUSA production bikes?

2018-07-28 Thread Joe Bernard
On a slightly side note because future Waterford Rivs have been mentioned, I'm
still not convinced that's going to be much of a thing again. Maybe they'll
continue limited runs of the Roadeo (and Legolas if you ask in a not-in-writing
way), but Atlantis, AHH and Hunqapillar? Two of them are being recreated as MIT
bikes, and we're about to get a MIT replacement/update for the Hunq. I just
don't see those models continuing as MUSA at a higher price, and with what will
appear to be older designs.

Which leads to my next conclusion: MUSA Rivs will retain a used market separate
from their MIT counterparts.

[RBW] Re: Do you think MUSA-RIVbike used sale values will change due to the current non-MUSA production bikes?

2018-07-28 Thread sameness
I think it depends on what you're getting in a future MUSA frame.

If the forthcoming Waterford Atlantis, AHH, etc. basically retain the
features of the pre-2018, regular(-ish) chain stay, 2-3 degree upsloping
top tube models, I don't think the used market for these frames will
benefit as much.

But if they're basically just US-made versions of the same LWB, compact
frame sizes as the MIT models, I think those looking for the "classic"
features will probably drive up prices on the used market.

For example, I think that the MUSA Atlantis was available for a short time
with a revised geometry and different tire sizes, but I'm not sure if
that's the plan going forward, or if you can still buy what I'll call the
"classic" Atlantis via Waterford. Remains to be seen with the Hilsen as
well.

Dunno.

(Also, tangentially, one of the reasons why '80s-'90s MIJ/CIJ Fenders
command such a relatively high price is because they were actually superior
in many ways to MIA Fenders of the same vintage. Japan was pumping out good
value reissues with excellent attention to the classic details the market
wanted, while America largely concentrated on new and different. Nobody
pines for a '91 American Standard Tele, but you'll always find a buyer for
a FujiGen '62 Custom RI. Oversimplification, but still.)

2018-07-28 Thread Lum Gim Fong
That’s an interesting point. Of course, MUSA frames may start up again. But
like you say -equivalent model at equivalent build quality...

Rivendell switch in production made me think of the Fender guitar production
wars that used to be.
The battle raged for years about MUSAFender guitars vs. FenderJapan models and
MUSAFender prices went up and stayed high til this day. Not just vintage
either. Now FenderJapan is done with and the non-MUSA models are made in
China/Korea/Indonesia/Mexico. The USA models are still retaining their
extremely high value and rising.

Not the same industry/marketplace at all but an interesting parallel to ponder
how it will shake out in the bike industry.

I hope so. I'd like a Waterford Atlantis someday and think their used
prices may come down since it'll be competing with a new bike of the same
model name, even though it's not the same bike.
