A child's wants are innocent - that's how your father looks at your 
bicycles.  
Teaching personal sacrifice to a child at Christmas time is the opposite of

I've taken a whole other strategy with my kid. 

He's plugged in, online, engaged, and has been for a long time. I doubt 
it's a strategy that would work with every kid, but he's pretty inoculated 
against ads and consumerism. He does consumer research, and knows how to 
delay gratification. He loves his videogames, but he's also a voracious 
reader, excellent writer, and a good thinker. He debates politics with his 
Xbox friend in South Carolina, and stays his friend. He knows all kinds of 
random interesting things, and actively pursues more knowledge, like, "How 
To Become Pope, " which I've shared with my 
adult friends.

Well I own 5 flat screen TVs a PS4, Gameboy, ipad, kindle fire and all the
other stuff we yes did fine without as kids but come on, they are fun
distractions. The issue is when they become all you do or all the kids do.
Everything is about moderation.

Patrick: agree wholeheartedly. Anton: good for you.

I don't have a TV -- find it hard to watch most movies without getting
bored or annoyed -- but daughter, alas, is very plugged in -- she lives
mostly with her mother. But her mother and I have, and I think effectively,
emphasized other values enough -- imposed them on Catie, come to that --
that I think all is far from lost. And she has been a huge reader since the
age of 6 or 7 when she discovered it is more fun to read than to have
someone read to her.

And I am glad I discovered Kindle: all sorts of wonderful free or
almost-free classics of literature, history, spirituality, what have you.

There is a lot less money being spent of televised ads.  Production quality 
is way down.  

Big money is in the cinema spots that then morph over to Youtube - 
apparently there are people who actually search for and watch ads on 
Youtube.  Go figure.

As for kids I don't have any but have some over at the house sometimes and
I find the precocious behavior displayed in much of children's specific
programs is pretty intolerable.  There's no way I would accept any child
talking the way they do on some of these TV shows.

For me, I could not live without my DVR. I cannot stand commercials, and
yes I think they are more unbearable than ever.  If it wasn't for DVR I
would pull the plug again, and go cable free, streaming only.  But my wife
likes Oprah Winfrey Network, and I like the home improvement shows on
HGTV/DIY.  So we filter what we have to endure by never watching anything
live.  Maybe someday an Internet connection will be enough, but for now the
cable companies are something of a cartel, i.e., they have some of the
interesting content I want and can't get separately.  If I could buy the
content I want on cable networks a-la-carte I would do so in a heartbeat.

On a side note, one of the great things about the older style of bikes is
that you can customize them a-la-carte.  I was on a 600K brevet this last
weekend and someone who had a top of the line carbon fiber Felt with D/A
electronic shifting had his shifter quit working after he had a flat.  I
surmise that something got knocked loose when he turned the bike over to
change the flat.  At any rate he had to ride the rest of the first day and
all of the 2nd day - approximately 150 miles - with two gears, that being,
those in the front.  I was needling him about getting a setup with shifter
cables, since I had a spare shift cable in my bag, but then I realized that
his bike probably doesn't even have provisioning to have shifter cables,
since I'm sure they build it as a proprietary integrated system with the
electronic shifting.

The guy is an extremely strong rider despite being over 65, so he was able
to take only having his two front gears in stride, and was helped by the
2nd day being a much flatter route east of Austin.  But still it reminds me
of why I ride what I would consider a normal bike.

Electronic shifting is cool in theory, especially for IT guys like me, but
sometimes tried and true low tech methods are better.  He told me
afterwards that he hooked his laptop to the derailer to troubleshoot.  Um,
if you have to carry a laptop to troubleshoot, what's the point of having a
15 pound bike in the first place?

I might ride a bike with electronic shifting if I was doing one of those
ultra-racing type events with a car following me.  Then, if the damn thing
breaks, I'd just grab my Rivendell off the top of the follow car.

But anyway, I digress...

Great question, Anton. When I see ads I grew up with and thought nothing of 
at the time, they seem obnoxious now. I suspect most of it is my 
sensitivity threshold has greatly increased. This is a common experience I 
have with all aspects of more minimal (simple) living. For example, I can't 
fathom how I slept in a soft cushioned bed or sad in cushioned chairs (or 
chairs of any type), as they instantly feel wrong since I've shifted to 
floor living.

Speaking of media, we also find that after living essentially ad-free since 
2006 (as not only do we not have a TV, but we also only listen to college 
radio stations of which there is an abundance with great programming in our 
area), it's become unbearable listening to ads when spending holidays at 
the in-laws. Have they gotten more obnoxious since then, or have I just 
become sensitized to them from not having them?

Precisely, Ron. And people can inadvertently promote childishness in their 
children by accepting it rather than challenging it. I'm not saying that is 
happening in any specific instance here -- but the commercialization of 
Christmas, and specifically the direct marketing to kids via kids shows 
that are nothing but marketing, makes it a very easy trap to fall into 
without realizing. Christmas is a time of generosity and a huge part of the 
joy of receiving is in knowing we've given as well so we understand what 
went into the gifts we receive. The same is true for our kids. The more 
they work and sacrifice to give to siblings, parents, and friends, the 
deeper their joy with whatever they receive, whether it's the "must have 
toy" or something else.

Retail is 5 bucks for a 5 pack of these little rubber toys, last I saw the
5 packs were going for 25 bucks most places because they are sold
everywhere. Law of supply and demand, although yeah crappy that some kids
wont get what they want because parents cant afford 5x retail.

Ahhh, but if their Christmas depends on getting a specific toy, then they 
are more likely to discover real Christmas in the toy's absence than it's 
presence. Though I'm not sure how I'll make it to the New Year should I not 
be given a Disney Frozen Castle & Ice Palace Playset. Sardonic grin.
