I'm afraid I have to agree with the person who said that having a nice bike
makes it easier or inviting to just add more bikes of a higher level. I
enjoy the heck out of my bikes because I have found that quality
bikes just perform better and have a wonderful feel to them. Kind of the
you get what you pay for idea.

That does not surprise me either . And also, to be able to shop in
person, to see and feel whatever it is in person. I live in an area
without the wide choice an urban/suburban area offers and rather miss it.
Online shopping is just so different, so "virtual" . Here I am sitting in
front of a table on the floor, tapping on a plastic keyboard, looking out
the window. Hmmm how odd . It's like the difference between riding
the bike, and looking a images of riding the bike, one full of life, the
other rather empty, like eating junk food , you keep eating but never are
satisfied. Like thinking about life but never fully being Life itself.

 Man oh man . . . .

Re:my wife's bike. We are now in our 60's ( 64 and 65 ), but in our 50's we
road a lot (6-7000 miles a year). We had to rebuild her Campy shifters
several times and had to replace wheel sets, and finally replaced the Campy
triple group with a Shimano Ultegra 6800 11sp group. But the frameset will
remain her favorite forever.
In my experience, a well built and well designed bike is a great
investment. Heck, we even had her Rex repainted.

Thankfully rivendell's hold a lot of their value and a few mistakes (bikes

"Best" can be completely objective, too: you just need criteria and a

expensive != "best", best is best but it can also be the most expensive.

[RBW] Re: Need help justifying a Rivendell?

2016-12-12 Thread masmojo
Speaking for myself I find that if I try to satisfy that itch for the really
expensive thing I want, with something good, but not what I want. Inevitably, I
am still not satisfied and eventually I will plunk down the money to get what
I want! Cheaper just to bite the bullet in the first place.
Also, if you really love something, chances are others will too, so that thing
you bought and used extensively, will retain or even appreciate in value while
you use it! $1,600. Appaloosa Vs $1,600 trek, in 15 years which do you think
is going to be worth more!? One guess! 

It's been said that, in the long run, it's often cheaper to pay retail.
