[RBW] Re: Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-11-04 Thread Tully Lanter
Thanks, Davey. That makes a whole lot of sense.

I ended up going a different direction, thanks to an extraordinary (and totally
unexpected) deal on a city/light cargo bike that meets all of my utilitarian
needs to the letter.

The savings were such that a second bike for recreational "needs"...the longer,
faster weekend road rides and whatnot...is totally feasible. And easily
justified. I'll be watching the Roadini discussions/reviews here with great
interest!

Does "do it all" include doing roadie duties or frequent high speed riding?
If so I'd say no. Will the clem go fast? Yes, mine often does ;) but is it
a fast bike? No way Jose.
I just posted the following verbatim in another thread so sorry for
redundancy:

While super capable of much more (ie actual single track, touring) the Clem
is at heart a super and tough cruiser. It'll do that other stuff happily
but It would rather take you to a coffee shop with your dog loaded up front
(14 lb mini aussie) down a dirt path to a creek with a hammock, lunch and
book or home from the farmers market with a couple days worth of groceries.
It is a utilitarian bike first, but it can and does do so much more. I love
my Clem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-10-28 Thread Joe Bernard
I hear ya, Tully, I had a bit of a journey with the step-through/mixte stigma,
too, which is really just residue from decades of marketing.

It was always a silly idea. Folding bikes and recumbents have low stepover; as
do big, burly, sail-down-the-mountain bikes. People all over the world ride
"dutch bikes" and such to work and shopping every day with low tubes which
allow them to wear regular clothes without ripping pants and kicking the
toptube with dress shoes.

I was still on the fence a year ago 'cause I'm an old guy steeped in old
marketing, but Grant finally knocked me off that perch. I was at RBW HQ last
summer and here comes GP tuling up to the shop on a lovely orange Clem L with a
big-old smile on his face. Sold! Right then I realized step-throughs make all
the sense in the world, and the Clem with the curvy droptube is SO pretty.
Will's Cheviot was another player in my conversion to stop caring about old
marketing and embrace pretty frames that are easy to mount/dismount at
stoplights. Bonus: No toptubes gouged by handlebars. Let that bar swing, baby!

I love my gorgeous Bronzey Green (Will's descriptor) Clem L, and will love my
upcoming RBW Blue Cheviot just as much. Get the L!

2017-10-28 Thread iamkeith
I think you've gotten your answer, but wanted to add my vote that you
absolutely want the 52. No question. I think it would be almost perfect, which
makes you very lucky because the limited number of sizes can be a problem. Im
6'1 1/2" with a 87cm pbh, and my 59 is marginally too big. Reach is ideal if
not a wee bit short for use with bosco bars, but stack is too high, and I have
zero standover clearance.

Im usually with Garth on this, in that i believe that proper fit trumps
everthing. But i was just thinking the other day how much i love mine, for
exactly the use you describe, DESPITE the fact that my fit isn't ideal.
If/when i can get a custom, it will basically be a fully-lugged 56cm clem H
with 700c wheels: the missing size. At that point. I think I'd get rid of
most of the 20+ bikes i have hoarded, and anything else would essentially
become a "special event" bike: all rounder for touring, ram for all-day road
rides, a go fast, a couple of actual mountain bikes, and a snow bike for the
other 7 months.

As it is, I choose the clem most of the time anyway.

I think you're considering the right bike for your application, but I have
to say that I don't own a Clem, but a Joe Appaloosa (my first Riv and I
LOVE it), as that one fit my needs better.

However, if needed a bike for what you describe, I would have bought a Clem
L. If you're thinking Clem H, also consider a Joe Appaloosa. Gossamer on
this board has a 58 cm one listed for sale and they come up for sale every
so often. I don't think you could go wrong with Clem L or either Clem or
Joe looking for an "H".

If you can make it down to Portland, you can visit Rivelo. John frequently
has a good stock of Clems, and is even hosting an event with Grant this
Saturday afternoon (10/28).

Another thought, you could almost certainly get away with the larger frame

Re: [RBW] Re: Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-10-27 Thread Eric Daume
I picked up a used Clem H

this summer and ended up selling it pretty quickly. I think the frameset
would work out fine for me, but I didn't like many on the stock components:

- I'm not a Bosco fan, no "just right" position that I would use for 80% of
my riding

- Stock tires were terrible, the worst tires I've ever used. How can a 2"
tire ride so harshly?

- The saddle caused me physical pain after just a few minutes, much too wide

- The stock shifters shifted pretty poorly, what with the micro clicks.

All pretty small stuff that could have been easily fixed, but I wasn't in
the mood and just sold the complete for about what I paid for it. So my
advice is to think about a frame up build. Maybe I'll try this again in the
future.

good thread timing! i just ordered a 52 Clem L recently and just have to
ship some parts over to riv and wait for the build to happen. i'm 5'9ish
and 85 pbh, and my wife is 5'5 and uh like 78 or 79 pbh. the plan is to use
it as a kid hauler / utility bike that we can both use, with a quick
release thingy to adjust the seat post as needed. it'll also make an
awesome bike for guests since lots of people will be able to ride it. set
up with a b67 sprunged saddle, bosco bars, huge wald basket on front, and
rack on back with a kid seat. sticking with stock kenda tires for now but
will look forward to putting some ne plus ultra fatties on there sometime
soon.

[RBW] Re: Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-10-26 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I found Clem to be more than reasonable for my own needs (and wants.)
After going down the fixer-upper rabbit hole several times after getting
back into cycling in recent years I finally invested in a Clem as my first
(and only) Rivendell and first complete bike purchase since 1994/95 (when I
bought my first adult bike... a low/mid-range rigid steel
Mongoose mtb whose frame I still have and still want to build back up for
some reason.) In my case I went with a 65cm Clem H to match my 6'5" height
and 97ish pbh... and I'm on the low end of the pbh range for this beast. I
bought sight unseen during pre-order after already being familiar with the
initial release in the smaller sizes but still never having ridden a Clem
or any other Riv. The only area of disappointment for me was the discovery
that this second batch of completes no longer included the bullmoose
version of the bosco bar. Mine came with a 55cm cromo bosco bar and 12cm
tallux stem (which I understand the fixed size/shape of boscomoose
presented packaging challenges for the completes.) I got over that quickly
once I took the stock build for a ride anyway. I still eventually replaced
with a chocomoose bar considering I still really wanted a moose bar that
wouldn't be able to slip under load since I had experienced it before
with swept back bars and I was interested in trying the Choco design. I've
been very pleased with my Clem (aka Herman Clemmington) but haven't given
it anywhere near the love it deserves with limited saddle time over the
past year.

I do not recall the pbh ranges for the smaller sizes but if you are on the
cusp between sizes I would definitely consult with Riv and their
sizing/geometry charts to find the best fit depending on your personal
preferences regarding handlebar, riding posture, etc.

have some in stock. I think the 52 would fit you fine.
The Clem is great for any riding when you don't care about how fast you
need to get there. For me that is about 98% of my riding.

I'll add one more (to my own previous) vote for Clem for stability. I e-kitted
both of mine and - as any ebiker will tell you - you can really get cooking on
these things. Clem has a very motorcycle-like ability to stay straight and true
whilst pounding over uneven, pockmarked pavement at a ridiculous pace, then
turn in and hold a line beautifully in corners. I imagine this translates well
in dirt, too. Get one!

Thanks, everyone, for the helpful feedback here. Sounds like a great match
indeed!

Very doubtful I could try one in advance, since there are not yet any Riv
dealers here around Seattle. Will definitely chat with Rivendell about
sizing, since my short-ish legs + long arms combined with Bosco bars makes
for a non-obvious (to me) sizing solution. Thanks again.

2017-10-26 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck

Hey Tully,

I really like my 52cm Clem H. I use it for local transportation and running
errands, as well as for on- and off-road weekend rambles. It was my first
Rivendell frame, and I was pleasantly surprised that, despite it being
billed as their budget bike, the frame is well-built, the paint is superb
and the what lugs it does have are beautiful. Plus, it has lots of mounting
points for racks and fenders. I'm 5'-9" with an 84cm PBH, so I think the 52
will fit you just fine. (Plus, it's a really big bike.)

This thread has made me revisit the consideration for the Clem L, but I do
not need it. If someone were to buy my Brompton, well then OK, but that
bike sort of fills a different need as well..

2017-10-26 Thread Brad
I just bought a Clem L as a commuting, shopping, not-in-a-rush around town
bike. It works great. I really wanted a bike that I could ride dressed
nicely- I wanted to be able to wear a sports coat without the shoulders
binding because I was reaching too far forward and to wear nice pants
without worrying about blowing out the crotch swinging my leg over the
seat. It slows me down on commutes in a good way. I haven't ridden the Clem
offroad yet, but I was planning on taking it on the iBOB Old Croton
Aqueduct trail ride before it got rescheduled. It's not a bike for every
situation, but it will definitely do all the things you listed (and more).

2017-10-26 Thread Ed Carolipio
I can't comment on sizing but I think the Clem checks all your boxes. Riv
HQ has always been welcome to chat about about sizing and fit so I suggest
giving them a call as well.

Clems are on the upper end in terms of price for cro-moly steel bicycles
but IMO the price is competitive, the frame/fork are worth the premium, and
the parts mix is pretty good. And honestly the Clem L is unusual in a good
way: not too many mountain bike step-thrus out there. I'd have gotten one
for me if the Bubbe mixte hadn't fit me - but I did buy one for my better
half.

[RBW] Re: Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-10-26 Thread Julian Westerhout
Tully,

I bought a Clem late in the spring to gradually replace my prior
commuter/around town bike -- a greatly modified 1980s Trek 620. As of this
fall, the Trek has essentially been replaced, as I find myself very happy
with the Clem. Larger tires and a relaxed geometry makes it more
comfortable on the bumpy roads I usually travel, and makes short off road
excursions not only possible, but fun. The gearing is ideal for hilly
areas, as it goes from super low to middling -- in my mostly flat environs
I almost never go into the small ring, but have plenty of gear to toddle
along a vigorous clip when inspired to do so.

I have a front rack and a Wald basket, and have been happy with that. I've
used a Burley QR adaptor to attach my cargo trailer to the hooded dropouts,
and it tows very well for big load trips.

I really am very happy with the bike, and (although this may or may not be
a positive) it has drawn more questions and verbal admiration than any
other bike I own. I say go for it!
