Manny,
Don't infer from my message that Carlsbad and Cardiff are the two that will get
you two nights from LA to SD. They are near each other, so they would be two
options for you for the San Diego night. Further north for the previous night,
I'm not sure where you go - maybe Doheney, which is in Capistrano Beach. But
the distance from Doheney to Cardiff isn't super-duper long. It's worth looking
into.

2010-07-20 Thread cyclotourist
San Clemente State Park is pretty convenient. About 60 miles from SD.
Doheney is nicer, but you're about 20 feet from the train tracks and they
have limited spots. San Clemente isn't bad, it's just that their hike/bike
camp isn't anything special. But unlimited spots.

2010-07-20 Thread Michael_S
I don't think South Carlsbad State Beach has a hiker/biker site. Not
sure, but I recall seeing a sign with that info. I've been spending
some time down there recently shopping for Real Estate.

You should call the State Park you prefer and ask about Hiker/Biker
sites.

2010-07-20 Thread ronzorini
Another vote for San Clemente. I like it because it's about halfway
between LA and SD. A little off the main drag, so it feels quieter
than some other campgrounds. (Although the last couple of times I
stayed there, I was startled awake by transients setting up camp in
the middle of night.)

Not sure where you would camp if you were to break up the trip into 2
nights. I don't know of any public campsites north of Doheney. You
could bike off-road and camp at Crystal Cove State Park like the SoCal
Riv riders did.

TinyURL.com/2b39c58

Afaik, San Onofre and South Carlsbad (as Michael stated) have
eliminated their hiker/biker sites.

All great information here - especially James' thoughts on coffee,
beer, pizza. I'll add Pannikin coffee roasters in the old train
station in Leucadia.

As for stops, if you really want to make two stops, Crystal Cove above
Laguna Beach was nice when we +25O'd there last year -- and Carlsbad
would make a good second (I've also heard they don't have hiker/biker
sites). Alternatively San Clemente/Cardiff (San Elijo) would work.
San Clemente is a big campground - and you can camp up the creek
rather than along the beach railroad tracks.

Let me know when you get into San Diego, as I can recommend plenty of
places for cheap and excellent food.
