[RBW] Roadeo ???
No, there just isn't a need for more than the ones they make. They have the Roadeo and AHH, had the San Marcos, and are working on the lower cost Roadini. There's only one direction to go from the basic road bike, and that's to heavier/longer/more tubes and wider clearances for fatter tires. There's more options for more models of bikes in that "it can grow" sector, so it leaves the impression that RBW is "moving away" from classic road bikes. In reality it's "in addition to." -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Roadeo Teaser
I have been posting here and there, but mostly lurking. Santa's Brown truck came early this year, and apparently I was a good boy! Here are some teaser shots: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36302...@n08/sets/72157622875811028/ Size 63 in the Raw clear powder coat. I can now be part of the Owner's bunch with more than stuff from the odds and ends pages. I can say without a doubt that this is the most beautiful frame I have ever owned. It has been a crazy wonderful week, Married my best friend, bike comes early, and off on a family weekend with the Honeymoon to follow. Back in 10 days to take some better pictures and document the build, until then enjoy the teaser shots, have a safe Holiday and get some saddle time. [RBW] Roadeo Envy?
With all the buzz about the Roadeo being available I was inspired to update my '96 Road Standard. [RBW] roadeo forks
some of you guys subscribe to jan heine's bicycle quarterly. in one edition, he described different forks, specifically blades. he mentioned " imperial oval". i noticed that the fork crown on my roadeo is narrower than the crown on my ram. but the fork blades are very ovalized. i have to reiterate, this bike rides great and the fork, while very forgiving, is in no way flimsy. just an observation. don c. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Roadeo dreaming...
I stopped by the Rapha Store in San Francisco. I'm not sure I understand this part of the business model, but Rapha opens these temporary storefronts as little cafe-boutiques and then shuts them down. It's in San Francisco through July. It's cute, and it's nice for me at least to be able to touch the products. They have the Tour de France on bigscreens all day and have a lot of informal seating. It's a cool vibe, if you don't mind pricey clothes boutiques. Anyway, they had a very small Chris King display upstairs. The highlight of the display for me was a gorgeous white Cielo Sportif. It's essentially a Roadeo ie a fat tired road bike. It takes 57mm brakes, comes with fender braze-ons, steel fork, etc. The key differences are it has a more muted monochrome look, no fancy lugs, but it had a couple really cool little reveal accents showing the stainless underneath (around the seat cluster, cute little headtube rings). It appears to have a dead level top tube and not quite as much BB drop as a Roadeo, and it has a 1-1/8" threadless steerer. It's basically the same price as a Roadeo frameset ($1895 f/f no headset). The bike had a decidedly modern vibe to it (nobody is going to ask "nice bike! how old is it?"), while still having a timeless classy steel look. Very very appealing. So, the point of my post is twofold: 1. check out the Rapha boutique in SF if you care about such foppery. 2. Two of you should step up and buy me a Roadeo and a Cielo Sportif so I can ride them both. ha ha. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Roadeo Redux?
Jim: Thanks for the "test track" sneak peek of a great looking club ride bike. The feel of it seemed familiar, so I compared it to a '95 (also "Ford" built) Riv. No headtube extension, no TT upslope as on the later "Road Standard" model. The current lugset is Saluki-ish looking, but the bikes are pretty similar. This '95 Riv weighs 21lbs with the cages, pedals, leather saddle and empty saddle bag. Oh, the 95 is running 650B shoes, so imagine a tad less space between the seat post and rear rubber. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Mark showed me the specs sent to the builder when the Roadeo was first produced. There was no distinction between smaller and larger frames. I had a 59 Legolas and was considering a 59 Roadeo. It is possible that they have changed the spec, but in the end you still get a heckuva bike. jim m wc, ca On Friday, November 18, 2016 at 10:25:22 AM UTC-8, ttoshi wrote: > > It is my understanding that the smaller Roadeos have the lighter tubing, > but the larger ones have slightly thicker tubing... > > Toshi > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Roadeo ???
Yes, definitely a great bike. What distinguishes it from my Homer is the quicker handling and the shorter top tube allows you to ride more comfortably in the drops. It's perfect for my club rides and supported century rides etc. For my self-supported/rando rides I prefer my Homer or Ram with less aggressive handling and built up with front racks etc. Toshi On Fri, Nov 18, 2016 at 10:38 AM, Jim M. wrote: > Mark showed me the specs sent to the builder when the Roadeo was first > produced. [RBW] Roadeo specimens?
Hi. Do any list members have Roadeos that they're riding now? I'm especially interested in seeing a picture of the stock white/blue model. There is a blue/white frame on the Riv site but not one that's built up. [RBW] Roadeo Prelim Report
The honeymoon was perfect, and made it home in time to recover, pull a full afternoon build up, and a Sunday shakedown ride before the rains and work set in for the week. Picture here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36302...@n08/4166372759/in/set-72157622875811028/ It is a mix of old, new and NOS components. I shot around town for about an hour, threw in some hills for good measure. All I can say now is WOW. My basis of comparison is my Rawland dsogun, a 1974 Eisentraut Model A and a previously owned CrossCheck. The thing is fast, easy and comfortable. I hit the build almost spot on right out of the gate. The Jack Browns are like pillows compared to my Roughy Toughies I was a bit nervous after looking at the oversized tubes and too much "Bicycle Quarterly"/planing on the mind, but this thing is like a finely tuned spring. I can not wait to get it up on some of my regular rides up in the hills. In summary, this is the best roadbike I could ever imagine owning, ever. Details to follow later this week. Re: [RBW] Roadeo review
Thanks for that referral. I am more and more intrigued by the Roadeo; not this year, for sure, but next year ...? Perhaps it's time also to try sewups, as Matheny suggested? Praise for Rivs of all kinds that always, without exception, comes up in reviews is their unerring handling. I dunno about low or high trail, but all the Rivs I've ridden are impeccable. I just took the Riv commuter out yesterday for a quick trip to the doctor (down Montano to Edith to Osuna) and, after having ridden only the Monocog and Motobecane for a couple of weeks -- which both felt like wonderful bikes -- I was once again surprised at the fit, feel and handling of the Riv, even with skinny 22 mm tires ( 90/100 psi), and at the way it accelerated. I've been posting about this surprise now for over 10 years to various lists, but it never fails. Wonderful bikes. Re: [RBW] Roadeo dreaming...
I don't think this is a fair comparison The Roadeo seems like a much better bike for the $$ to me. Nuthin' bad to say about the Cielo except they are TIG welded. To me it's exciting that these kind of bikes are getting out in the mainstream. [RBW] Roadeo names, alternatives
THere are always alternatives—and many good ones. We aren't out to smother anybody, and it's unlikely to happen, and wouldn't be good news if it did. But what is "Roadeo"--a compromised-for-the-mass market "house brand"? Ouch. A lot of stuff goes into the bike. I understand that with a certain amount of accessibility comes a certain amount of ... well, "disrespect" isn't the perfect word, but if I say "the Rolex phenomenon," does that make sense? We're familiar enough to reach out, but over time, the familiarity becomes a drawback, as old customers use us as a stepping stone on the way to explore brands more under the radar, and we don't have the advantage of the new or something, Over time, though, the passion-or-conscientiousnes or whatever--it isn't dwindling, and we get slightly better at certain things. There are things I understand and know about frame design, and frames in general, and structures, that I didn't know five years ago. They're never talked about, because they're not of of a nature that's easy to talk about without sounding out of touch with reality or what matters, or the big picture. Is a frame any better if it has something good that 's too small to notice but yet isn't superficial or purely cosmetic? Or worse if it lacks it, but all the stuff that's active and visible is equal? Sometimes, like usually, it feel like I'm working in a dark closet in foreign land with a new language that doesn't work in public. The revelations are so tiny, and are too tiny for prime time, but they're really neat (from my perspective). It's frustrating to not be able to express it, or to not have the confidence in my ability to, without being misread. The name Roadeo was intended to ID it as a road frame. I can see, and we knew from the start, that it would not fly with everybody, but for a fun and highly maneuverable road framehey, not bad. In a name- mosaid that includes Felt or Giant or Specialized or Trek or Big Dummy or Sir Velo."Roadeo" will shouldn't stick out too sorely. Besides--what would you expect from the company what brang you A. Homer Hilsen, Yves Gomez, Betty Foy, Bombadil...? Re: [RBW] Roadeo Build
Do you know whether you prefer Shimano, Campy, or SRAM brifters? You'd do quite well with the build spec that Mark at Riv put together for a go-fast Roadeo. When I wanted to put together my road gruppo, I watched Ebay and was able to piece together a 9-sp dura ace drive train at a reasonable price. In general 9-sp will save you big bucks over 10-sp. At your weight I wouldn't go with the Ksyrium-type wheels, I'd stick with 32-hole Mavic Open Pro or Velocity Synergy. jim m wc ca On Wed, Nov 16, 2011 at 11:23 AM, Shawn wrote: > Need some advice on the buildup of 59cm Roadeo frame I recently > acquired. [RBW] Roadeo and fenders?
We haven't pushed the limits but my wires Roadeo was running JB's with SKS fenders. I did't seem room for much bigger than that.. but a 35 would most likely squeeze in there. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/5833548939/in/set-72157626963139970 >From the front showing the side pulls with fender .. not room for bigger >fenders anyway. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/5834103836/in/set-72157626963139970 So after walking down stairs and looking again... I wouldn't want to try to go any bigger than the JB's.. but since she has 700x27's now I can't really compare. later Kelly -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Roadeo or RB1?
Hardly have sold the Herse and I am salivating at the thought of something new. What I need, I say, *need*, is a gofast multispeed bike (with coasting capability); no gd fenders, racks -- I've got plenty of bikes that will take fenders, racks and loads. This would be for fair weather, no-load, cycling-kit-wearing (but wool kit), lightweight rides. No tire fatter than 28 and 26 acceptable. Now I am sure that the Roadeo is a better bike and I know that fender and 32 mm clearance won't take from its speed; but the R would run upward of $4K minimum built with used parts, and I would hope to find a RB1 or similar classic for less. I want something that is fast to accelerate, climbs well, corners "intuitively" and that will well fit a long torso and short limbs. Perhaps I ought to convert my 1999 650C Joe Starck fixie custom to a gearie (having converted my '03 Curt gearie to a fixed commuter). Actually, now that I think of that, this might make sense -- unless I convert the '99 to a trike. [RBW] Roadeo Build Options
Hi RBW - I'm want to place an order for a Roadeo – upgrading from my RB1 but wrestling with ideas on the final build. I'd like to reach out to the collective mind and ask for some suggestions as my wishy washy brain can't decide. What I'd like to do with the bike in my fantasy world/bucket list is: * Ride L'Eroica CA * Ride down the Pacific Coast - Multi-day/Motelpacking * Ride across US Given these as the big picture purpose of this bike, I'm stuck between these two options: Build 1: Downtubes + Threaded Fork * This would allow me to just have one bike for all riding but I'd like to re-learn (as if I ever did learn) downtube shifting. Build 2: Modern Build + Threadless Fork (+1) * I have a Force 22 groupset on my current ride and I'd just swap out the parts on the new bike * I only need DTs for L'Eroica so I should just find a bike for the ride - not worth using DT for everything else Now that I write this all out, I'm leaning on Build 2 but since I'm hoping to do some long distance rides, I'm worried about maintenance and Build 1/DTs would be a lot easier for upkeep and minimize problems. I've considered other models but I've really been wanting a Roadeo and even on these long rides, I don't plan on doing much bikepacking or loaded touring. Just keep it minimal, simple, and ride from motel/friend to another along the way. Thoughts? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Roadeo Build Options
When I had my Roadeo I had it with a modern Ulegra 11 speed group, a threaded headset and a modern set of wheels built by Rolf. The bike ride great and I never had one issue out of it. I can’t really fault the Ultegra for anything as it was a smooth shifting group that gave me a few years of trouble free service. I have since sold the bike though, as I don’t ride on the road anymore. I like modern shifting so much more than downtube shifting which, IMHO, the only real benefit is being a bit easier to set up. The Roadeo is a great bike no matter what way you have it built up. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Roadeo Build Options
Have you ever had to do any work on your Force levers? I'm not sure there's much more maintenance necessary than with DT; in my experience STI-type click shifters either work or they don't, so I'd just make sure I had newish ones before starting a tour. I think a Roadeo should be built as a light road bike with the stuff you like to use on most rides (that's bar ends for me, but not one of your options). DT shifters are simple and look great, but you really gotta be into the idea to go that route, in my opinion. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Roadeo/STI bars
I've been planning on using Noodles on the Roadeo I've been building. It'll be my first STI bike and I really like Noodles. But then I thought a different bar might be in order. I've read through all the posts discussing Noodle alternatives, but am wondering which of those alternatives might have a leg up on the Noodle when used with STI levers and a lower handlebar height. Maybe something with a shorter drop? Any thoughts? I'm open to 26. or 31.8 or whatever. There are only two deal breakers. One, it must be available in a width that measures approx. 46cm at the hoods. Two, that it comes in silver. I'd love whatever advice you could offer. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Roadeo/STI bars
When I had my Roadeo is used the nitto “mark’s bars” that Riv used to sell. They had a very comfortable drop and ramp area. Heck, I may still have them in the garage now that I think about it. [RBW] Roadeo Sizing Help
Hi all, As I've mentioned before on the board, I'm interested in a Roadeo. That 59cm posted on the site has caught my eye, but I'm wondering if it's a bit on the small size. My PBH is 88.5. Are there any Roadeo riders on this board with a similar PBH? If so, what size frame do you have? Grant kindly replied to my email and said I'd probably be fine, and that the fit would be more traditionally "road-ish.". Obviously, I trust him, but I've made bad sizing decisions before and would love a second opinion. Grant is The Man. But here is another data point. I am 6ft with an 89cm PBH. Grant chose a 61.5cm Road standard for me. [RBW] Roadeo Sizing Help
I'm 5'10 with a PBH of 87.5 cm. In 2011 before I bought my Hilsen I measured and I got 89.5 cm. Grant suggested a 63 Hilsen, which I got. Later when talking to Keven he said either 61 or 63. I bought a used 63 Roadeo in 2013. I run a 10 cm Tallux and Technomic on the bikes. They fit great, no issues. I ride with the bars (bot drops) level with the seat. That being said, if I were to do it over (which I have no desire to) I would get the 61 in both bikes, more for aesthetics than anything. I'd prefer a fistful of seat post or even a little more. I have less than that now. And it would be easy to get the bars up high enough. My MAP custom randonneur, which Mitch built from my measurements on my Hilsen, and my "new" PBH, has a 59 seat tube and 59.5 TT. It fits swell as well. When I get an Atlantis I'll go 61. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Roadeo as Commuter
So I have raised enough capital to complete my Betty Foy project, however the BoxDog pelican was sacrificed in the process.so while I take the Betty Foy off to paint and start on a wheel build, I am in need of a commuter. Rivendell proves its versatility again as even a Roadeo can fit the bill at a commuter in a pinch, I don't need to carry much mind you as I have a private office which allows me to keep clothes ect at work, but still amazed at how comfortable my ride still is, Still need some fenders but clipons work for now whenever it does rain. [RBW] Roadeo finally ordered!
Well, I did it! I ordered a Roadeo frameset. 53cm Ram Orange with cream accents, threaded fork (going to use my Nitto lugged stem). When the custom raffle was going on, I bought a gift certificate just so I could get entered into the raffle. I didn't win, of course, so I am using the gift certificate on the Roadeo frame. This bike is going to be my club riding bike and faster solo ride bike and the set up is going to be more aggressive than my Sam Hillborne. I have some time to think about wheels/components and general setup which I am actually thankful for as I could use the time to get some money together. Brifters or barends?hmmm. This is not a stock color but was painted at D&D based on the colors of Marks custom cross bike. Re: [RBW] Roadeo specimens?
"Same price regardless of color? Or same price for threaded/threadless? Anyone know?" Toshi is right. Any Riv model that is built to order gives you some no-charge color latitude. The two main exceptions to that are: They can veto it if they hate your color choices and they can upcharge you if the paintjob you want is a more expensive paint job than the one they normally would have done. Color substitutions don't cost anything, for the most part. That is a great choice of color Toshi. One of the most beautiful to my eye customs that I have seen at Rivendell (I used to live nearby) was a dark red custom. Re: [RBW] Roadeo specimens?
I've been thinking about picking up a Roadeo lately, so I called Rivendell yesterday and spoke with Dave. What I got from the conversation was that you can choose any Rivendell stock color scheme, from any model, with the cream accents.r. Any other "custom" color you dream up would be an up-charge. However, I realized i didn't get clarification on whether the stock color scheme could be from a previous model, like the gray & red Hunq (now green). Re: [RBW] Roadeo specimens?
I just ordered a Roadeo in Ram Orange and it was a hundred buck upcharge. Marc said the white with blue or red accents were the stock colors. Some colors were more though, depending on what you wanted. [RBW] Roadeo (Waterford) paint colors
Hi folks — Does anyone know the colors used by Waterford to paint the Roadeos they built? Specifically the white frame and fork with the blue accents. The white seems to be slightly creamy or off-white. And I have no idea on the blue — sort of a royal blue I guess. Thanks! [RBW] Roadeo Ride, new pictures
Finally getting some Roadeo time in. http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563...@n06/sets/72157625377490164/ A lot of parts came from a Colnago Masterlight. There's no comparison between the two bikes, really. The Roadeo with Rivendell geometry is a delight to ride. The Colnago is a really beautiful bike, but quite uncomfortable - - bars too low, neck always hurt, dopey short chain stays led to crummy shifting for Clyde. Clyde likes a triple, but the triple doesn't like 39 cm chainstays. So, the Roadeo has luscious 43 cm chainstays, which makes the shifting happy and smooth. The Campagnolo 10-speed brifters and rear derailleur now work happily with an FSA crankset (24-36-48). As for the frame, well, I need to come up with some prose to convey a sort of dreamy-eyed contentment here. As you would expect, the bike is very comfortable, very "plush," to you the common parlance, but quick and delightfully solid during out-of-the saddle climbing sprints. My Clydesdale Quads tried to crush the bike today, but the frame just rocks below the rider me, very content, no mushiness, no chainstay rub, no bottom bracket sway. Rock solid, and still comfortable. It feels nimble, and really excels on the downhills. I don't know nothin about no planing, not me, but I can say this bike sings pretty sweet when you push it hard. Of course, the fat dumb and happy Schwalbe Kojaks are like feather pillows. I'm really happy with the brakes - - I had read some posts about how these big mouth brakesets are sloppy and shaky, but I am happy to report they stop with alacrity, wonderful modulation, and perfect confidence - - even for Clyde doing 35 mph down rough pavement on an 18% descent. The bike, the brakes, and the tires give a fellow quite a smile on the downhill chicanes. The only thing wrong with this bike is the rider, who hain't been riding too much last few weeks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Roadeo vs. 1988 "Huffy"
Did you see this May 17 Cycling News article about Andy Hampsten's lugged-steel frame that he rode to victory in the 1988 Giro d'Italia? www.cyclingnews.com/features/historic-pro-bike-andy-hampstens-1988-7-eleven-huffy-giro-ditalia I was struck by the similarities among design criteria for a 1988 race bike and the Riv Roadeo (with the exception of perhaps fender clearance). It weighed 19.7 lbs without pedals. And I love this quote: " 'The year after '88 we had Eddy Merckx as our bike supplier,' [Hampsten] continued. 'He is the master at fitting bikes to riders and taught us not to get hung up on light bikes. Why save seconds on a climb and lose minutes on a descent? [John] Slawta certainly has an old world style of making bikes that go up and downhill properly.' [RBW] Roadeo v. Soma ES?
Greetings non-lurkers - I like the idea of a so-called club racer to go beside the Bombadil, but the Roadeo comes in freakishly small sizes, not fit for a healthy 98cm PBH. Can't understand why Can anybody contrast/compare to the Soma ES (http://somafab.com/extrasmoothie.html)? Besides the fact that it is welded and 1/4 the cost? It comes in a 66cm (C-T) which should be OK. I know, I should be contemplating I.F., but if this is a quick-and-dirty solution I'll take it for a few years while I save up some cash. If you're really considering pushing the fat tire advantage, then maybe you should also think whether the Roadeo is the right bike for this application.
