I have a Bike Friday Family Tandem. It is a twenty inch wheel bike, and
the small wheels lets you have a lot of flexibility -- It works as well
with two adults as it does with very little kids in back -- and without the
clamp on kid tandem crank**. I rode it to school with my 4 year old
daughter as the stoker -- (now 13!) and I've also been the stoker myself,
with my brother up front. It is technically a folding bike, but I've rarely
taken it apart. It goes nicely up on a Yakima rack on my Volvo 240 wagon.

** for really little stokers, I have crank shorteners which thread in
where the pedal usually goes, and gives you three shorter options for the
 pedals.

Another cool thing is the use of a Sachs 3x7 rear hub, which makes a front
derailleur unnecessary, and lets you run the timing chain on the right
side, connecting the stoker's small ring to a right side crank in front. --
no need for tandem specific cranks. Also very nice to be able to downshift
the internal gear 3spd hub when stopped.

I currently use it mostly to haul groceries with a burley trailer.

Bike Friday even makes a Family Tandem Triple!

[RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for tandems?

2014-02-07 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I have seen a lot of men spend a lot of futile money trying to get their wives
on a tandem. As others have mentioned, the fit issues are often a real
compromise (at best). Unless you're willing to pony up $5000-plus for a custom,
your odds of finding a tandem that is comfortable for both of you is pretty
slim. You can buy a quality used tandem for a song (from a formerly
enthusiastic husband), and then spend many years and thousands of dollars
trying to get it to fit. If you do that, you'll probably have to let go of your
Rivendell aesthetic sensibilities and open yourself up to some new options for
handlebars, etc.

Tandems are not something you can dive into casually or cheaply and expect good
results. Both husband and wife need to be fully on-board with the idea. If the
stoker/wife is lukewarm on the idea, no amount of enthusiasm from the captain
will make it work.

[RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for tandems?

2014-02-07 Thread Lynne Fitz
back when my then-riding buddy and I were out riding all the time, friends of
ours upgraded to a Santana and put their big red Cannondale up for sale. We
looked at each other, thought about it, and he bought it. The first test ride
around the Fairmount loop was equal parts of fun and scary - he was much more
into downhill speed than I ever was. Took us a couple of outings to get used
to it, and each other on the tandem (ride around Hagg Lake). Figuring out how
to stand was fun. Not as easy as you'd think.

Then we took it on a century. Many centuries. Two-day event rides. Seattle
to Portland in a day. We were both strong singles riders, which probably
helped. Much ongoing negotiation on how fast we were going to descend. Much
crabbiness on my part when he didn't call all the bumps on the Burke-Gilman
trail. It was more fun than not fun, but it did take some work.

One fun memory - me calling out the turns through Vancouver BC at the finish of
RSVP, with a whole swarm of pilot fish!

His wife later thanked me for training him how to be a good captain. :-)

I have an early 90s Burley Rumba and the price was right (under $2000),
made in the US. and my wife and I ridden it regularly since then on tours,
centuries, and club rides. Lots of upgrades (Noodles on the front, Dreams
on the back), change to Campy Ergo since the original Shimano STI were
terrible. I use a Brooks seat on the front and the drag brake is heavy but
indestructable. Been running Ruffy Tuffys with no problems. So all in all,
we've gotten our money's worth.

Yes. I'm surprised Eunice didn't mention this. Most stokers are more
sensitive to a bikes suspension than they are on singles. The pilot needs
to warn when any bumps are coming up and most stokers like a sprung post
or saddle. That said, don't give up. Tandems are great fun and most
stokers prefer their position because it gives them a lot of freedom to
look around take pictures, as Eunice posts illustrates.

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for tandems?

2014-01-31 Thread Eunice Chang
I haven't been on a tandem bike for over six months so I'd forgotten all
about that.

The bike friday does have something called thudbuster, and I liked that. I
used a sprung saddle for a while and hated it, but that might have to do
with the actual saddle/seatpost than anything else (it kept slipping down
and tipping back and forth). And yes, the bumps can be worse on a tandem-
which is why I usually paid more attention to the road than the captain
(our deal was he talked to folks in group rides, and I looked at the map
and the road). It becomes less obvious on more frequently traveled roads
b/c I got used to where all the bumps were and muscle memory kicked in. :)

Wonder if RBW will ever go tandem, not that I could afford it.
