A local mega miler here in ABQ nine inches in the rare year we are not in a drought, Gary It was a bad year; only nine thousand miles. Blakely installed fenders on his Trek and kept them year 'round; he found he crossed enough irrigation runoff puddles to make them worth while. But then, at 10K+ miles on a normal year, you'd probably cross a lot of everything. I kept Honjos on the commuter Riv until they broke and I didn't bother to replace them. Fenders in LA with me, too, at least on my commuter. The streets here are always filled with run-off from the lawn sprinklers of the rich and clueless, and who knows what else. I don't want that stuff splashing on my feet and legs. Every once in a while, it rains here, and when it does the streets flood almost instantly. I grab my Quickbeam almost every day for my commute. I don't want to think about shifting when I'm riding to work. I just want to pedal. I like the reliability and the fact that I'm always in gear. This has become a very interesting thread. I'm surprised at how many choose single speeds, fixies, or at least prefer simple drivetrains. Me, I chose fixed simply because I love riding fixed -- I had the '03 Curt custom converted locally to a fixed drivetrain when I converted it from 1X10 gofast to daily commuter. Several said that choice depends on circumstances (as well as preferences); true, too. The Novara Fusion that I bought for a friend late last year is actually a very decent commuting bike (8 speed hub, dyno hub + front and rear lights, disks, fenders, chain guard, rack, bell, belted tires and thorn-proof tubes, all this included, but no damned suspension or other unecessary gimmicks) but, even if one prefered this genre, trying to schlep such a thing up several miles of hill, or against a stiff headwind for several miles, would (IMO) quickly drive one to despair. (I put ~12 miles on it myself, longest ride 10 miles). That said, for short, flat, slow cruising with a lot of stop and start, I can see that a fully dressed Yves or Betty or Sam with Albatrosses might be nice -- after all, there is no reason why even short distance utility bikes can't be very nice ones. And I realize that some on this list ride such bikes far longer distances than I do mine. Keep the opinions coming! We should start a photo library of Rivendell commuters. (A few years ago on the Boblist I set up a library of beaters if anyone wants to see it. Some interesting bikes and a huge variety.) Next question, class: what is the worst commuter that you've ridden? It's not clear (to me, anyway), what criteria are used by the judges at NAHBS. That best-of-show time-trial bike isn't my cup of tea, but it seems likely that its builder demonstrated considerable skill in building it. There are a lot of skilled artisans exhibiting at NAHBS, and I imagine picking a winner across a huge range of styles is difficult, not to mention subjective. That said, there's no particular reason why a NAHBS-winning bike has to have anything in common with a Rivendell. Attempts to categorize bikes drive me a little nuts. How can you define a city bike by specifying particular wheel sizes or components or accessories? My bikes have more to do with my tastes and preferences than they do with the fact that I ride them in a city. Furthermore, I don't own a bike that can't be ridden in any city. What you are really asking is what features characterize your stereotypical city bike? Good points, Jim. I think it's just our nature to try to put things in little boxes. If we want to define a city bike, all we can really do is list features that might best serve a particular individual in a particular city. Would you call a messenger's ratty old fixie NOT a city bike? He probably gets more use out of it than any commuter does on their sensible bike. Is a bomb-proof, 26-wheeled, fendered, fully-lit, racked, 5 speed bike better? Maybe, but for whom? Personally, I don't need all that; someone else may.
