I have three dyno wheels and another hub in a box that I don’t even need. I’ve

yet. USB taillights fail me 5 or 8 times more often than a simple battery

Re: [RBW] Re: Mystery bike in April Blahg

2019-04-29 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
I've had Shimano and SP hubs and ridden them in nasty bumpy gross goop for
years. The light weight of the lamps makes them mostly stay put through the
rough stuff, and the hubs keep rolling and sending out power no problems
(knocking wood). Important would be to make your wire runs low profile and
bash/tangle resistant. I've never understood the love of winding the wire
around and around the rack struts. If said struts grind against some rock,
I want metal on rock, not wire sandwiched between metal and rock. Lately
I've been building my own racks with internal wiring to keep it safe at the
bike rack and beyond, and modifying a nitto or tubus rack for internal runs
isn't a huge deal so long as you're handy with a drill and thoughtful about
hole placement. As for seeing, my nighttime single track riding has been
mostly on trails I am fairly familiar with, so the lack of light leakage
off to the sides and up isn't a huge issue, I actually like the spookiness
of it.
Get dynoed!

Patrick, my experience doesn't take in the degree of difficulty yours does
but ...
I did regularly commute over a mixed terrain route that for most of that
time included some uneven bits (they did do some "maintenance" that
smoothed out some bits before I retired and stopped commuting). I rode my
fixed gear SimpleOne with 33mm tires pumped up moderately hard. The first
really nice headlight I had was a B Ixon IQ that used AA rechargeable
batteries. Sooner than I would have liked that light took leave of its
mount on a rough bit. After retrieving it from the trail side I noted the
slots on the base of the light that held it to the mount were busted up,
apparently the result of abuse by excess pounding. I epoxied the light to
the mount and continued to use it til I picked up a used son-dlx front
wheel and went to dyno lights. I never ever had any trouble with the dyno
stuff. I've also never read about anybody complaining about problems with a
dyno system related to rough riding environments, though as Steve notes
there may not be many (or any folks) mountain biking single track with dyno
rigged bikes.
I doubt well know how a dyno system would hold up under your use cases
unless you get one and test it out. I hope you decide to do so and let us
know how it goes.
regards,
ted.

You are the power source.  The closest thing to a battery on a dynamo
system is the standlight capacitor.  Battery stores charge, dissipates
it over time, eventually dies - faster in the cold. Generator makes
power as you go; run time is infinite, limited only by the rider, and
temperature insensitive.  Also, as batteries age they lose capacity, so
the system that this year may be good for 4 commutes in 3 years may dim
out after 3 1/2.  And you never have to remember in advance with a
generator system to charge it to get ready for use.  You forget you even
have a dynamo system until you need it, at which point you flip a switch
and there it is.

Roberta, you’ll have to share everything you learn if you get dyno before I do!

I think the description of how I like my bike set up is: CAPABLE. Ready for
anything. I never want to worry about not having lights or not being able to
carry something or having to compromise or settle. My End of the World Bike:
Ready. Smart. And darn pretty.

Then a dynamo system is totally in line with your philosophy.

I have been skeptical about claims that the beam pattern of dynamo

more effective than my brightest 1000 lumen light, partly because it

Many so called modern innovations really don't amount to anything very
much beyond marketing, but lighting is a different story. The
improvements in just the past 12 years in LED lights vs the best of the

area and the winter days are so short. Being able to ride at night was life
changing. Since them I’ve gone through multiple iterations of most all the
major manufactures lights and ever improving batteries.

I have been skeptical about claims that the beam pattern of dynamo lights
make them more effective. No more. The IQ-X is dramatically more effective
than my brightest 1000 lumen light, partly because it doesn’t scatter light
in my eyes, killing my night vision. I used to run a main light on the bike
and a helmet light to be able to see to the sides. I don’t feel the need to
as I no longer feel trapped in a light tunnel.

I agree, dynohubs are money well spent.

This is from an exchange I had with James @ Analog Cycles regarding weight,
here's what he said:

"Out of curiosity, I weighed both systems.

I put a standard front hub, good rechargeable headlight, and battery
powered tail light on the postal scale. 17 oz.
I put a Schmidt hub and headlight and wired schmidt tail light on the same

So the Dynamo is heavier...by half an ounce! But... ya never run out of

The entirely surprising thing I've found with having front and rear dyno
lighting on my Atlantis is I really like having daytime running lights. I
bought the bike as a demo from Analog Cycles and didn't have a choice about the
lights; I wanted THAT bike and that's what was on it. My schedule currently
doesn't permit night riding so I figured I'd have no use for the dyno, but I
use it all the time.

I don't ride too much in the dark these days, but I do it as it gets dark
to the end of my ride. I currently use USB rechargeables. I remember in
college having a light generator that looked like an old soda bottle. I
flipped it down for contact on the wheel to generate the light. I did like
that, because in college I rode in the dark a lot.

How much weight do dyno lights add? I'm already struggling with the weight
of my Appaloosa with accessories when I need to lift and carry it.

2019-04-29 Thread Wally Estrella
Adding a dynohub just makes it extremely more useful. I was indecisive for
years on getting a dynohub set-up. I've literally lost as many lights on
the trail and to aged batteries than I have into a laced up dynohub.
After the first night ride out I was so glad for the purchase. No worries
to ensure lights get charged, lights then get put on to the bike or in
bag. Also, I'm often out for hours on the trail (or road) in the dark.
Having something that burns out after 1.5-2 hours versus something that
just keeping burning the light wins it for me.

It seems you are as excited for this new anniversary bike as I am for a GBW
production to be announced!

Thanks! Stately and fast all at the same time - a consummation devoutly to

RE: [RBW] Re: Mystery Bike mods

2013-01-10 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
B:

No, I was referring to the Bruce G Rock 'n' Road tires that were formerly on
the Mystery Bike (not to a BG Rock 'n' Road bike). I loved them, but
couldn't make fenders work with them on that bike (at least not without
substantial fiddling, and even then no guarantees), so I put the somewhat
skinnier (around 36mm mounted) Delta Cruisers on the bike, along with
Longboards. Everything plays well together now, and the ride remains very
cushy (stately, as Cyclofiend suggests), but still surprisingly zippy and
responsive.

I agree that in most cases, a commuter should have fenders. I'm lucky to have
more than one bike and put fenders, albeit cheapy plastic Crud fenders, on one
of my bikes to use when its wet outside. Otherwise, one lucky thing about
living in my area is there are months when it doesn't rain and fenders are

I have a Bombadil, an Atlantis, a Quickbeam, a SimpleOne, a Hilsen and...the
Mystery Bike. (I know, there are recovery groups for this kind of an
addiction. But the first step is acknowledging the problem, and I can't bring
myself to that point!) All are truly lovely bikes, but the Mystery Bike is the
smoothest of them all. I don't know why -- maybe Grant knows, or maybe he just
guessed -- but the bike just swallows up road bumps and imperfections, yet
still handles like a slalom skier. I'm not kidding; it's really a great bike.

oversimplification and based on my ignorance of the bike's geometry, tubing,

Again, I know Grant is not a lover of IGH but this bike just seems perfect
for an Alfine 11 or Rohloff setup, no front deraileur needed, nice straight
chainline, beatufiul.

this is an oversimplification and based on my ignorance of the bike's

curious how this bike sits in a unique stall in Rivendell's stable.

we'll have a production model (meaning I think it is a good design). The

Well, I was going to wait till it was fully built -- fenders, racks, bags, the
works. But the inevitable glitches reared their ugly heads: 41mm Marathons
don't permit 52mm VO fenders, so tried terra cotta SOMA Xpress, which permit
the fenders, but then it turns out that the brakes aren't wide enough for the
fenders (and in any case Grant urged the EA group not to use tires 38mm

solution. (Nice looking, though!). Before I remove the entire Mark's
Rack/Platracks/fender-mounted-with-daruma assembly to try them, does anyone
know whether Paul Racers have better fender clearance than the Tektro side

Anyway, maybe time to post a few shots without all the accoutrements, to prove
(as Manny would say) that the bike actually can be ridden!

Never having touched a Paul Racer, * in theory * the Racer or any
dual-pivot centerpull should maximize clearance for a given brake reach,
since the dual-pivot centerpull configuration allows both arms to move up
they actuate the brake, rather than one pivoting down as is so on
dual-pivot sidepulls.

Strange that the clearances are that tight. It's also pretty strange that
it can fit wider tires/fenders than the brakes can handle. (Tektro 559 I

2012-08-22 Thread Peter Morgano
Man that is one sweet bike. I know IGH wheels arent really Grant's thing
but this bike is the perfect setup for a Rohloff/Alfine hub setup and all
day riding. I wonder when us mere mortals will get a crack at this bike?
Should I start saving for my B-day present in July? Oh, and I like the
delta cruiser setup, I am just a fan of colored tires, breaks up some of
the color on the frame and gives it a fun look. Cant wait for the ride
reports!

Good news on the Mystery Bike front -- straightened the bent derailleur
hanger and realigned the rear dropouts last night, and I believe I got them
both right. And I got to buy a couple of tools!

So, on with the build. One question for the group: Which tire fender
combo -- brown Delta Cruisers with cream Longboards, or the sturdy
Marathons it came with, and fluted VO aluminum fenders?

 The former looks like this:

I don't have an accurate way to measure them, but I just put a set on my SH

Tried the Soma New Xpress tires tonight at 60psi (they say 90 max), and they
were pretty nice. Back tire wasn't going all super-squish even at the
relatively low pressure. I purposely ran over a lot of rough stuff and they
soaked it up much better than the 38c Marathon Greenguards I was running
before. Anyway, nice tire and something to maybe consider. Super pretty as a
bonus.

I would call it the Rivendell 'Rangutan.

Brooks banana seat, Nitto Ape-Hangers, paint it Orangutan Rust (like their
coats), and use Cocoanut husk to twine the bar tape/bamboo grips.

The vine-like stays would finish off the jungle motif along with an Orangutan
Headbadge and DT label of the word 'Rangutan with a vine running throughout
the word, and a 'tan swinging on the end of the vine- a la Bleriot with the
plane and its trail.

(DT design could alternatively be a dust trail through the name, with the bike
at one end with Grant and Orangutan riding in the banana seat - a la Bleriot
design with plane and trail.)

The name would also porvide an easy way to circumvent any TM's or R's or
copyrights, as
I think the Rivfolks could emerge from the naming meeting, satisfied that the
term 'Rangutan is not used anywhere else for anything, worldwide.

Seriously, this is a great looking bike, be sure to post pics of the build!! I
wonder what the name really is? I like that green.

What is the exact name of those tires, if you please? What is the tire width
listed on the sidewalls? They look really nice. Treads look cool, too.

Yep, they scored on the color, but I wish it had a creme headtube. I also
wish I had jumped on this opportunity at the time. I love this bike! The
laid-back, stretched-out frame; the no-front-derailer; the horizintal drops
allowing for an IGH; the diagatubes..it's a Rivendell chopper, and it's
very cool.

Yep, they scored on the color, but I wish it had a creme headtube. I also wish
I had jumped on this opportunity at the time. I love this bike! The laid-back,
stretched-out frame; the no-front-derailer; the horizintal drops allowing for
an IGH; the diagatubes..it's a Rivendell chopper, and it's very cool.
