Re: [TANKS] Re: New Track System

2015-11-28 Thread Aaron Stern
Hello Everyone,

It has been a long time since I last posted but I'm ready to get back into my
build process.

Frank, I saw your comment on experience with different roller chain. Have you
seen anything regarding using 2040 single chain (double pitch #40) with metal
flats welded across the chain faces (for an effect similar to the super
expensive 2040 flange chain)? My plan was to use a lathe to turn the wheels so
that the metal flats will rest againt the wheel and the chain will ride inside
of a groove in the wheel...

Thanks in advance for the help,
Aaron Stern

[TANKS] M24 Build

2014-08-20 Thread Aaron Stern
Hello every one, I thought I'd make a thread for my new tank build. I had to
wait for almost 2 months for my motors to arrive but I just received two of the
ampflow E30-400-G motors. http://www.ampflow.com/ampflow_gearmotors.htm .
These look GREAT and I was only testing them on 12 volts. I just picked up a
matched pair of 31 amp hour 12v batteries and cant wait to run them at 24v.

One small setback is that the sprocket I ordered for the slip mechanism was too
small so I'll need to wait a few days for the replacements to arrive. I'll try
to add some photos at the next update, I know build posts without photos aren't
near as interesting.

sorry to miss the upcoming battle but maybe I'll be read for the same one next
year.

Best regards,
Aaron Stern

Re: [TANKS] Motor Question

2014-07-01 Thread Aaron Stern
Thanks for responding so fast. I'm glad to hear the winch motors are likely to
be abke to hold up over many minutes of use, if I kill of my ampflows I might
try a winch motor connected to the same gearbox.

The ampflow motor is rate at 235 amps at stall. I dont plan to go past 100
amps though as any thing past 118 amps is going down the hp slope anyway. I
will include standard fuses, mechanical torque limiters, and electronic current
sensors, and six temp sensors (on the four high side mosfets, and on the motors
themselves) to avoid running over 75 amps for more than short periods and to
prevent ever crossing 100 amps even temporarily.

[TANKS] Motor Question

2014-07-01 Thread Aaron Stern
Hello again,

I just wanted to pop in quickly to ask about some specific motors that I found
to see if anyone has tried them before. AmpFlow sells some very powerful high
performance motors with attached gearboxes. The E30-400-G is the model I have
ordered (out of stock, a few more weeks of waiting to go). The specs show that
it is a max hp of 2.1 at a little over 100 amps. I hope not to run at that
high a torque but it would be nice to know that it is available if needed. Ive
built my own Hbridge circuit and it SHOULD be ok up to 110 amps but I dont want
to push my luck.

On a related note has anyone tried winch motors before? You can find a 3.2 hp
24V winch motor for $100 very easily. My only concern would be the windings
overheating from extended periods of operation and shorting themselves.

Thanks for the help,
Aaron Stern

[TANKS] List of Future Events?

2014-06-23 Thread Aaron Stern
Hello everyone,

I'm new to this hobby and have just finished (and retired) my first tank to
begin work on version 2 which should be easier than solving my design issues
with version 1.

I am located in Gainesville Georgia and was wondering where and when events are
generally held. Is there a list available somewhere?

Thanks,

I seem to remember "the rule of 4s". A 4" drive wheel at 400 rpm will give

2012-11-30 Thread Aaron
I did not build the Danger Car car. I bought it from a guy who bought it
from someone who stopped racing. I originaly was going to buy brakes,
wheels and tires to upgrade a cart I already had, but bought this one for
less than the total aamount of the new parts. Now I have 2 carts.

The body on the car is small. It is hard to fit inside it for 6ft guy, so
the body is lifted a little. There were wings front and back as well, but
were cut off long long ago to improve aerodynamics. The wings slow it
down. One of the modifications I need to do yet is to put a full belly plate
on and enclose the sides and bottom.

Brake set ups are usually one of the following.
1:foot operated drums or disks on rear wheels only.
2:foot operated drums on all 4 wheels.
3:foot operated scrubs on rear wheels only.
Sometimes in the cases of 1 or 2, they will have a secondary hand
lever operated scrub.

Re: [TANKS] Re: I have been away, but stayed busy.

2012-11-30 Thread Aaron
Most of the popular vidoes of the "soapboxing" are old and back when many
people were more concerned with low-buck fun rather than personal safty.
Nowdays roll bars, harnesses and vehicle safety inspections are
commonly mandatory . Some still roll in $100 jalopies made from shopping
carts and wheel barrows, others are spending $5000 in parts and
engineering.
4 wheels, effective brakes and Helmets are requirements for anyone in any
group anywhere.
People get creative for car bodies as well, from shopping carts, wheel
barrows, saran wrap, campaign signs, bumpercars, to cartop storage
containers. A large variety of tires and wheels are used from Go cart,
bike, trailer, ATV, and motorcycle wheels. Bike tires fold up on tight
turns and tall motorcyle tires also have troubles, but the rest seem to do
alright. The trick is to have grip and low rolling resistance. Not exactly
hand in hand qualities.
Some use disk brakes, or drums, or even scrubs (plates that push directly
against the tire itself). Most are foot operated and some have a hand
operated secondary break.

This one is mine. It has, since this picture was taken, gotten a new paint
job and will soon have a roll bar. It is called the Danger Car. It's been
around since the early days of sport and was more akin to demolition derby
car than a racer. Now days it is vey fast and has disk brakes.

You have it wrong, Tyng my friend. These guys are very safe and
responsible. Safty and support crews come to help secure that things go
smoothly. All aplicable laws are obeyed and they fully cooperate with law
enforcement personel.
Though many years ago this was started by irresposible hooligans out for
good clean fun, it quickly evolved into a legit organization who use more
caution and common sense than 95% of motorists use. Urban streets are no
longer used and lots of research is done to find roads that are low
traffic, and times of day when that taffic is even lower, almost always
completly vacant.
I see your concerns, but they are addressed and not an issue any more than
driving your own car is. Have you ever run over a 5 year old? Niether have
they and for the same reasons.
I drive these, and from first hand experience can say we are safe about the
way we play. We do nothing that is not allowed to other non-motorized
vehicles such as bicycles.
Try it, Tyng. You might like it. :)

2012-11-29 Thread Aaron
You may have (or not) missed me as I have been silent for a while.
Without any hope of nearby tanker these days I have had little
motivation to finnish T076.
These days I have mixed myself up with gravity racing, or as some call
it, illegal soapbaox racing. This is a very special brand of
motorsports because, well, there is no motor. Just like the days of
cub scouts running down the nighborhood hill in a box with rollerskate
wheels and a rope to steer the front wheels, overgrown kids( 25-65 yrs
old) meet at the top of long steep twisty vacant roads and race to the
bottom with naught but gravity to propel them.
There are a few such groups around the country including a large and
active group in Maryland called the MISFITS.
http://downhillmisfits.com/
Others in the country include SUCKER, VULGAR, SFVISBF, and NUDRS.
NUDRS, Nevada Underground Downhill Racing Syndicate is a group of my
own making. Just recently founded and still building members, we push
our creations to the limit is the name of low-buck entertainment.
See youtube for videos and an idea of what this is about.

[TANKS] New Guy + Speed Controllers

2012-10-31 Thread Aaron Rowan
Hey guys,

I have to say, I'm very impressed and appreciative of the level of detail
and ingenuity put into this whole organization.
The construction steps are great. The compare/contrast and How to's are
great.
Very cool.

I've played a bit with robotics through FIRST. Know a deal of basics, but
it's such a broad and demanding spectrum of skills.
Mechanical, Electrical, Programming (Potentially) that I'm a long way from
you guys. Perhaps most on the fabing side.

Regardless, I have come across a pretty decent speed controller which seems
to be signfiicantly better than the Victors.
I have 2 left over victors, which don't seem to want to calibrate for me,
so I bought one of these:
http://www.dimensionengineering.com/products/sabertooth2x25
Pretty nice.

Almost have my drive scheme going. I'll post updates later. somehow...

Re: [TANKS] My T34/85

2012-09-14 Thread Aaron
The T076 Sherman has very extensive use and abuse as fully functional
chasis. Only the top half (turret and gun) has yet to be finnished. Tracks
and suspension still running strong.

Indeed I am looking forward to extended battle condition tests. Is there by
chance a possibility of a "Winter War"? I will be back east visiting family
from 11/26/12 - 11/10/12 and would be happy to bring my tank for battle.

You are mistaken Mr Tyng, my Sherman is of the Easy 8 persuasion with real
return rollers and a track with a single center located guide tab per track
link. I prefer the Sherman type bogies to other suspension designs because,
1- they look cool, and 2- they take up absolutly no interior space. I
simplified my design by forgoing a true fully-suspended system in favor of
a rocker/indepndent hybrid set-up. It's not a smooth runing as full
suspension models, but much smoother than non-suspended ones, plus I am
able to keep my tracks in full contact with the road wheels at all times
over any terrain.\

[TANKS] New School vs Old School

2012-08-23 Thread Aaron
Funny how I was going to start this conversation topic and all of a sudden
some one comes out saying they are going to build a modern MBT. But this is
my question.

Why are the overwelming majority of our tanks of the WW2 era and not of the
modern design? What drives most of us to model after older and inferior
armor instead of the newer and superior breeds?

I chose an M4 Sherman variant as my own despite the obvious flaws and
limitations it possesed in history. I did so for a few reasons
- It had simple lines
- It was iconic American
- It for some reason spoke to me in a way that no other had
That may sound funny, but I wasnt really overly interested in the biggest
and the baddest. I was drawn instead to the over worked and under powered
machine that did by sheer determination.

What are your thoughts? What made you choose yours?

I was introduced to Kurt by John P when I joined the hobby a few years ago.
It was quite a surprise to learn we both worked for the same police
department. We spent a few good days together when our shcedules allowed
and talked tanks, cars, and off-roading. I am very sad to hear of his
passing and wish we could have spent more time playing around. We never did
get to battle like we always said we would, but he will always be here with
us in our hearts and memories.
Goodbye, Kurt. We shall all meet again after our time here is done.

Re: [TANKS] Mittlerer Ladungsträger Springer, Sd.Kfz. 304

2012-07-28 Thread Aaron
Yes, the rules state main guns of either 70mm+ or <70mm as the deciding
factor. But does "no gun" = <70mm? I can find no mention of a Springer
armed with anything other than 330kg of Sprengstoff explosives (not exactly
a gun).

However, I did find a link mentioning plans for a Springer based
Kleinpanzer Wanze mounting a 105mm IG recoiless gun, but that would fall
under the rocket launcher catagory if I am not mistaken.
http://www.achtungpanzer.com/mittlere-ladungstrager-springer-sdkfz304.htm

Could I get away with claiming that the German soldier driving it is armed
with at least a MP40 submachinegun, thus the Springer having a gun of
<70mm? Another longshot I know.

OK, dont get all excited about this one, it's a long shot I know, but.
Are there any rules about adding guns to vehicle that did not historicly

 In such a case, could I say it's got a MG42 or a Pak 35/36 37mm

Re: [TANKS] Re: suspension questions

2012-07-27 Thread Aaron
Jarring movements and vibrations will always play a part in waer and tear,
yet in this hobby, little reliability has been sacrificed when a fixed
non-suspended wheel format has been used. Franks T001 Tiger has none, yet
enjoys a very very long and life still running around today.
Many people suggest this, and I will now agree. Make your first tank
without suspension. Dont bother. After it is done and all kinks worked out
you can do a few things.
1- Leave well enough alone and enjoy your WMD.
2- Upgrade your chasis to a suspended verion.
3- Build another tank with suspension and loan your first out to a buddy
when it's time to play.
I suggest option 3.

[TANKS] Mittlerer Ladungsträger Springer, Sd.Kfz. 304

2012-07-26 Thread Aaron
I came across this little guy for the first time yesterday. I fell in love
with it just as I did with the Ford 3-ton, the idea of having such a small
target running around the field is a very appealing notion. The problem is
what would be it's use.
It is the Mittlerer Ladungsträger Springer, Sd.Kfz. 304, or "Springer" for
short. a demolition vehicle of the German
*Wehrmacht*<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wehrmacht>in
*World War II* <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II>.

Based on the well-known *NSU*<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSU_Motorenwerke_AG>

AG*<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSU_Motorenwerke_AG>at
*Neckarsulm* <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neckarsulm>, Germany, developed
and built around 50 Springer demolition vehicles in the final year of World
War II.

Too small to be of use as a taditional SV transporting goods, and no gun
for "tank" status, it finds it's self in a funny. Since it was designed to
be loaded with explosives and then driven to a target and then detonated, I
was wondering if we could give it a special ability of a "touch attack".
Run it right up to an enemy asset, touch it, and boom, one-hit -kill! Both
Springer and enemy asset would be destroyed, having to respawn back at
base. (just an idea)

[TANKS] Re: suspension questions

2012-07-26 Thread Aaron
It does not seem that anyone has done this exact set up before, but dont
obsess about building it exactly as it was in reality (most of us do not
hold much stock in reality). Instead, simplify and get to battles sooner.
Many of the all time greats (T001) run without any suspension at all,
others use whatever will fit best in thier limited available space
reguardless of historical accuracy.

Have you thot about reducing the road wheel number to a more convienent 6
per side? That would allow you to spring them all in pairs without that odd
one out. I would even recomend the same set up as on my own T076 Sherman.
Simple and effective is traversing all terrain and keeping the road wheels
in contact with the track at all times.

all? Sorry, I just dont understand these things.
And after the snip, my 24v turret motor will not damage the ESC (provided I
use a chunk of aluminum for cooling)?

[TANKS] Las Vegas SYN SHOP Hackespace

2012-07-15 Thread Aaron
A recent hackerspace has come to the Las Vegas area known as the Syn Shop.
It is a community collection of hackers, engineers, welders, woodworkers,
mechanics, techs, nerds and hobbyists all meeting together to share ideas,
expertiese and give assistance on projects. Through their help I was able
to find a thing or two out as well as making a few valuable contacts.

I found this as a great time to get technical help on the Sherman. I
brought it last night to the meeting where two things were detemined.
1- The batteries had gone bad. Not suprising seeing that they are 2+ years
old alredy and were left unattended in my shop for many months without
chargeing or tending. Oops. Will take them to NAPA in the morning to see if
they are truely dead.
2- The Pelican brand PS2 controler that is supported by the C6C reciever is
not supported by the C6C reciever. Appearently Pelican makes 2 different
wireless devices, a Chamelean controler and a Predetor controler. Chameleon
will work, but the Predetor will leave you with that heartbreacking
disappointing feeling that only comes from utter and complete betrayal.
This whole time it was the PS2 controler that was the issue, not the C6C or
C12C (sorry for all the nasty thoughts about your hardware, Frank). So I
got a used MadCatz from GameSpot and all is well.

So monday I will test and confirm my useless batteries, get new baterries
and redo my wireing for a better setup. If all goes well I will then
contenue to work on the turret and gun.

Thank you, Las Vegas Syn Shop. Thank the Lloyd for hackerspaces.

Also, according to the hobby rules, no vehicle or asset may have more than

I could see a scenario where the object is to be first team to be able to
shoot all the opposing teams paper soldiers hidden amongst the buildings.
Airsoft BBs and paintballs being the only allowed means of neutralizing the
soldiers. Airsoft would then be a way to conserve ones paintball ammo while
still completing the task of eliminating the inantry.

[TANKS] Re: gettysburg

2012-05-31 Thread Aaron
Well, I had a wild hair that got me itching. I suddenly had a couple of
days come up at work that I got off and decided I could use them driving
across country from Las Vegas to Gettysburg with tank in tow. The only way
this would work is if I had a co-pilot drive when I needed to sleep
(nonstop drive). So I called Kurt and told him to get his Brumm in gear and
head out with me. But alas he refused saying something about dinner, old
age and this being a stupid idea.

So, if I had a way to actualy get there you all would have had a
semi-functional Sherman that someone could hopefuly help me with , as well
as another asset operator. But too bad it was mostly a fantasy, fantasy
that almost came true.

Have fun you guys and please take lots of video and pictures. And dont
forget the score cards.

Just an idea. For a list of approved prototype vehicles one might just go
with the roster of tanks at the Patton, Bovington, Kubinka, ect... Museums.
That would make it easy. If it aint in one of those places then the answer

[TANKS] Re: I say we do allow....

2012-05-22 Thread Aaron
The problem with using World Of Tanks as a standard for tank stats is that
they often put objects on their tanks that dont belong. Such as the
Panther's turret on a Pz4 with it's long 75mm. other things are wrong such
as the Hellcats top speed of 72kph (100kph actual). Other discrepincies
exist of course but you should get my point. Many of these "prototypes" are
on paper only and were far from being practical.
This is why I still maintain that only actual built prototypes should be
concidered. I would also recomend each perposed "prototype" tank be
evaluated and aproved by a single sorce or comittee (The Elders) for the go
ahead for that particular model to be built. I do not beleive the T28(World
of Tanks version) should ever be allowed, but the T95(World of Tanks
version) should.
I know, i know. broken record... beating a dead horse... I just want it to
be discussed and given full conciderment and then decided. I wouldn't try
to challenge the ruling no matter the outcome .. for a couple
years anyway.

[TANKS] Re: I say we do allow....

2012-04-20 Thread Aaron
Thank you, well said. A clarification of "produced" vehicles would be
nice. Even if remained up to Frank to have the final say on all
"prototypes" whether or not they will be allowed.

For example:
T28 - "Yes. Due to the fact that multiple vehicle were produced and
that they were fully operational and completed field trials, RC Tank
Combat will allow the T28 into it's ranks."
-or-
Tiger(P) - "No. The Tiger I model built by Porche never saw
completion. Even though nearly 100 Tiger(P) chasiss were produced, a
finished vehicle was never assembled or tested."

I am happy to hear that it is up for discusion. Leat me know on it's
final decision.

[TANKS] Re: The Tyng Track System

2012-04-18 Thread Aaron
T076 employs the Tyng Track System and has great success with a
single square cut and being overlapped by only a single cleat. My
cleats are GOOP glued and botled together in 3 places, but show not
the slightest sighn of seperation. The tracks have also been quite
abused in thier testing and have had ever oppertunity to fail but have
yet to break.
TTSs have been joined in many ways, but they hold better than what you
might think with the simplest straight cut and sigle cleat overlap.

[TANKS] Re: I say we do allow....

2012-04-17 Thread Aaron
Once again, I never said anything about concepts, or things drawn on
paper! I am speaking of those tanks actualy built. Tanks actualy
tested. Tanks actualy that worked and fully functioned. Tanks that
still exist in museums today. They ARE real tanks, just never put into
service.

I could care less about stupid KV-VIs and Rattes. M7s, T20s, T28s, and
T29s can be physicaly seen, touched and climbed inside. With a
restoration, they would drive over car and blow up your house. Tell me
how they arent real tanks and how how they should not be concidered.
After all, Wasn't the KV-2 and Ferdinand complete falures? Why not ban
them for being prototypes? But just cause they were rushed to service
instead of actualy being field tested, they get to be included.
Benifit of having the war in thier back yard, I know, but I hope I
made my point.

This is the basis of my arguement, The T28 was Built, it was Tested,
it Worked, and still Exists. So stop trying to counter it with
bullshit talk of fictional tanks, helicopters and submarines. If you
have a problem with what I speak for, then discuss IT and not
Hollywood RVs driven by Bill Murry.

Yes indeed I do spend too much time on WoT. But that's not the point.
I am saying that there were fully funtional tanks built but never put
into service. I dont think that small detail should disqualify it from
full participation in the hobby. The T20 was a very good tank that was
better in most every way than the Sherman, just not as build/transport
friendly as the M4 and thus was dropped. Such vehicles in mine eyes
need given full oppertunity to enter the battle field.

[TANKS] I say we do allow....

2012-04-14 Thread Aaron
I say we do allow certain prototype vehicles to be designated in this
hobby. There are many examples of test vehicles that proved successful
but never produced for one reson or another. A couple examples I am
thinking of are the US T28 super heavy and the T20 medium. Both have
actually been built and tested but passed over due the lack of need
for them. Either one would be a beutiful peice to build and admire and
have full sets of specifications needed for a proper modeling.
I understand that the prototypes that never made it out of the shop or
even of paper are many and numberous, but they are not the examples I
speak of. Even the Maus was never fully completed and thus would not
be eligble for what I perpose, but others such as the T1 heavy and T29
heavy should.
The reason I perpose this is that it would add many many interesting
and appealing options to the hobby.
