[TANKS] Re: Survey time!

2014-03-26 Thread Buck Cronk
I took your survey. This business of yours sounds interesting--good luck!
Don't be afraid to charge $5000 or more for a good 1:6 scale tank--but
then, you're be more qualified to put a price on it than I am. Again, good
luck!

I forgot the staples in my diagram... they also help hold the belt and the

up with something very thick and heavy. If these tracks do fail
prematurely, though, I'll definitely reconsider!

I've attached a diagram of the track. Thanks for the support! I'll keep
working on it, and hopefully finish it someday. I'm located pretty far away
from the rest of you, I think, and without sufficient means to join in any
battles. If the sport grows enough, or I move, maybe I can participate
sometime. I do wish I could start over, but how else am I supposed to
learn? I feel like I've learned a lot from it already, and I'm just getting
started. Thanks, again!

Also, Mr. Tyng, all the material was obtained in an appropriate and legal
manner :)

Can't wait for the T-54, really. I just like how it looks.

I also intend to go for those Chinese tanks such as the 59-16, WZ-131,

Isaac, I'll be happy to look up your clan, but I don't really intend to

[TANKS] Hey guys!

2013-07-17 Thread Buck Cronk
I haven't even looked at this forum in the longest time! I just wanted to
let you know I haven't abandoned my tank, and especially not my passion for
tanks. I also wanted to ask a few questions.

First of all, my tank. It's still under construction. It has been for
months and months. It will be for months and months. I'll post pictures
when and if I get to the "rolling chassis" phase. But it's still a work in
progress!

Now for those questions. Do any of you play World of Tanks? I know Steve
Tyng did/does. (If you haven't heard of it, it's definitely worth a Google
search.) If so, I'd love it if you'd leave your username, please! Mine is
Spitfire155.

I play tanks on my new computer, and I'd like to thank Steve Tyng and the
others again for their input when I was building it. :)

Glad to see this hobby still going!

Does this look adequate? It and the monitor you suggested drive the price

will work with everything, do I need to find a different case? I didn't see

Thank you so much! This does help a lot. I don't plan on overclocking, and
thanks for the advice on the SSD and monitor. I can probably get them right
away as I don't think upgrading will be worth it for a while (under my
circumstances.) And I think it's nice you noticed all the parts had good
reviews. That's what I was looking for, and I kinda stayed away from
unfamiliar brands and products without reviews. For example, I found what
looked like a very good graphics card for the money--but there were no
reviews and it just seemed too good to be true

So thanks a lot!

Re: [TANKS] Is anyone smarter than a high school freshman?

2012-12-01 Thread Buck Cronk
Probably a good idea. However, if someone else built this thing for me it'd
be missing the point. I do have some real life resources that I may be able
to talk to. There's the guy who works on the computers at our tiny school,
who I've consulted about a robotics project, and also a guy living just a
few miles away who is opening a computer store. :) But yes, if "the point"
for you doesn't include actually building the machine yourself, that seems
a pretty safe path to take.

Newegg is where I've been looking for most of my parts... and I am doing
some research online about building your own computer. This is off-topic,
but I need a place to start and if any of you can tell me whether the parts

of those computer build forums, but I don't know if I'll ever find a forum
as nice as this one. :)

Thanks guys. "Return idlers" was the word I was looking for. I think I'll
stick to the tank. But since I live way out where I do, don't expect me
coming around for any battles. Besides, I'm not sure my very first tank is

Hey, have any of you built your own computer before? Just an idea in my
head, but if you have I am currently putting together a parts list to go
from someday. And buying computer parts right is probably the hardest part.

I don't think I'll be building any of those suggestions, Dave... it seems
at least the M18 is different. A quick Google search turned up a picture of
an M18 with little idlers (what are they called?) strung out above the road
wheels. If I make a tank it'll probably be the T34. Thanks, though!

I know about these options and risks, and I did some more thinking (before
reading this) and decided I might still go with a turret! One, it has
certain advantages; two, my dad is the type that likes to finish what he
starts and not go off course like that. :) See you and thx

[TANKS] My T34/85

2012-09-11 Thread Buck Cronk
might not end up being a T/34/85. I did some research. Turns out (and I'm
sure all of you experts have known this since you were 3) that the SU100
uses the same chassis. I just might decide to turn around and make an SU100
for (hopefully) greater ease of building. Tell me what you think! Oh, and
my unnecessary worry about too many T34/85s will then be completely dashed.
Even though I probably will never even meet another *tank *on the
battlefield! Not that I live in the middle of nowhere, but you can see it
from my back porch.

Re: [TANKS] My friend Kurt

2012-08-17 Thread Buck Cronk
I'm sorry to hear that. Hope you don't go through too much pain. Treasure
your memories of him. I wish I could have met him. As a side note, I have a
280z that was sitting out in the woods... I dragged it into the shop to see
what I could do... but of course parts are awfully expensive, the only
thing that could work on the car is the engine, it needs a new body,
probably even a new frame. They weren't very good when it came to resisting
rust. So now it sits out by our old combine and three old Ford Couriers my
dad likes. :( The worst part is, if it had been restored, after all that
cost I couldn't drive it anywhere. I'd have to just take it to car shows,
do a little run around, keep it off the dirt roads we live on. Very cool
car, though. It was similar to the 240z, I think... condolences.

Cool. Exactly what I was thinking they were. But the issue over ammunition
needs to be cleared up. For safety purposes, someone with time should test
different systems and pick the best/safest for everyone to use. And
somebody ought to make at least one of these, for the sake of not having a

I don't think there's a speed limit. I read somewhere that no one has found
a drive system that offers much extra speed (or something to that effect;
it mentioned transmissions), and even if they did that everyone would have
the same setup for the next battle.

Re: [TANKS] Machine guns

2012-06-18 Thread Buck Cronk
Agreed, Doug. Airsoft BB's aren't the same as paintballs. They would work
perfectly as they would not be expensive to install, they would carry
plenty of ammo (suggestion: limits for Airsoft ammo in the possible future
could be whatever you can fit in your tank!), and they would make for lots
more realism. Isn't that what we want to go for? I mean, the majority of
tanks ever built carry one or more machine guns. Some used a MG for the
main weapon. I say, go for what works in reality, and apply it to RC tanks.
We can't use real machine guns, of course, so scale it down to Airsoft and
there you go. We've already scaled down main guns to paintball guns, so
it's the same idea. Now how about smoke grenade launchers...???

Re: [TANKS] New inadvertent camo job

2012-05-28 Thread Buck Cronk
Whew That was really close. Just think of what it could've been
like if your entire workshop had burned down with your tools and the tanks
you put so much work into... and whatever else was in there. Great to hear
it was no big deal. And too bad the camo job didn't cover the whole tank
like that (but then the fire probably would've done more than a paint job).
Oh well.

Hey, this topic must be pretty controversial. Huge number of posts now.
Today I played WoT, which I don't get to do very often because our computer
graphics card is pretty much obsolete. My cousin and her husband came to
visit and he's got a laptop he showed me the game on. I already knew about
the game, yes, but I finally got to try it. And he has a premium account
with no tank shortage.
