RE: [TANKS] 25 Pounder Upgrades for the Next Battle

2014-10-21 Thread loic Anthian
Isaac, I don’t have all the details on the new products… I’m not an electronics
guru!

FOA never had a problem with the Talon SR. It seems very rugged and never
failed us, and we used it a LOT! I used the dual Sabertooth as well, and after
two failed on me, I decided to use Talons instead

I said the “new” Talon SRX is for 24V, but it may be for 12-24V applications.
The other ESC is limited to 12V.

As for the limit switches, the designer of this ESC seemed very excited about
it, and if it has some purpose in the Robotic world, I would definitely see
some application in the tank world. But we will have to check it out when it is
available!

Cheers from Utah

2014-10-21 Thread isaac goldman
the 24 volt model leaves me wondering who exactly they think the target
consumer is? Most robotics competitions dont allow 24 volts, and anyways
any robotics application where the motor is a 24 volt model the esc needs a
level of ruggedness, fault tolerance and bullet-proof design the original
Talon failed to demonstrate.

Plus yeah, where do I need limit switches with a 24 volt motor?

Limit switches are kinda silly for a 60A ESC. Any motor capable of
drawing that much current will probably not be used to drive mechanisms
with limits. And their price increase eliminates the market advantage
they had over dual-motor ESCs.

2014-10-21 Thread loic Anthian
On a “side note” to tankers, ‘Cross the Road Electronics’ has discontinued its
Talon SR product. It is out of stock everywhere including AndyMark.

Two new products will be coming on Jan. 1st, 2015 – Talon SRX made for 24V but
MSRP around $80. It includes other features like limit switches for gun
elevations or traverse. The other ESC product is only 12V and will be at the
same price point of $65.

FOA has removed all its ‘in stock’ Talon SR from the website as we need the few
we have left to finish tanks.

The “French Connection” will be hunting you this weekend on the Battlefield!

Another example here .

On page 18 it states the maximum "on" time for actuators is 0.7 s.
But note that on p14 and p15 it states the actuators have a mechanical stop
- it may be the time to hit the stop is typically significantly less than
the 0.7 s limit.

Correction above: "toggle" should read "rocker".

I found a sample schematic here

.
In Figure 1 there is an unlabeled white rectangle which I presume is the
computer.
The inputs Lock, DR Unlock, and Unlock are on the bottom and the
corresponding outputs are on the top.
Each output drives a relay which switches an actuator.
The computer probably doesn't do much more than pulse the outputs and break
"ties" in the event of wiring faults.

Which button? Which vehicle? Which actuator?

vehicle = newer automobile, button = start, actuator = starter
The "start" button is probably one of many digital inputs to one of many
microprocessors.

You can also generate a one-shot pulse with 555 or 74121 timer chips in
monostable mode.

Ok, that makes sense. I believe the actuator failed when I put the cannon

The door lock actuator probably failed because it was powered too long. It
consists of a simple motor that moves in one direction to move the control
arm. When it reaches the far end, in a fraction of a second, the motor
simply stalls and keeps pulling current until the voltage is turned off. If
it pulls current for too long, it will heat up enough to break the small
motor winding wire. Ask John all about it. He was the first person in the
hobby to fry one ☺
When using a manual fire button, the button stays pressed for a lot longer
than is required. So, you should always just tap the button, not press and
hold. After the battle, I'll build a circuit for you that activates the
actuator for 100 milliseconds, regardless of how long the button is
pressed. We've been using that approach with door lock actuators ever since
John blazed the trail and we haven't lost one since.

[TANKS] 25 Pounder Upgrades for the Next Battle

2014-10-10 Thread Caleb Smith
Over the last month or so I've upgraded, rebuilt, and strengthened several
parts of the Quarter Pounder. I thought it advisable to disclose the
changes to the possible enemy to reduce the possibility of having too much
of an advantage over them.

Upgrade one: New barrel
I during the last battle, I found the stock barrel to be accurate at close
range, but longer range shots seemed to be sporadic. So after doing some
homework I decided that a 32 Degrees Night Stick was a good choice. So
far, no testing has taken place, but everywhere I read their accuracy is
said to be up there with much higher end barrels.

Upgrade two: New Actuator
Not exactly an upgrade, more like a forced upgrade. The old actuator got
fried, so I needed a replacement.

Rebuild one: Elevate
During the Quarter Pounder's quick build, I found that building the arms
and lever for the elevate out of wood was the easiest choice. I was told
that this setup should be replaced with either plastic or metal as the wood
wouldn't hold up. Just recently I rebuilt everything with metal. Works
very well and is plenty strong.

Strengthen one: Rotate
When originally built, the cog wheel used a carriage bolt to attach the
wheel to a coupler which is attached to the motor. The square neck of the
carriage bolt was started to rotate its way loose. To fix this, I took a
large washer and filed a square hole in it for the bolt. I then drilled to
hole on either side of the waster and bolted this to the cog wheel.
Much better and should last a long time.

 Enjoy,
C
