You see Chris, you need to make travel arrangements for the next battle, and
GET YOUR ASS DOWN THERE!!

If you can't get the Tiger up and running, at least you can help in the
photodocumentation of the next event!!

Then, you could be taking the clips, instead of pining to see them...

can we expect to see more pictures and video links added to the report page?

as for Bazooka Joe, that is the first time i saw any images of him and i have
to say, Lee Major's would be upset seeing he couldn't do 60 mph on his own.

i think it's pretty cool looking and would love to see video of him in action
- maybe a short clip of him firing at a tank and hitting it?

[TANKS] Re: A Bridge too Far

2012-10-01 Thread Mike Lyons
Google Groups is not behaving. I tried to reply to my first message and it
deleted it.
Apologies for any duplicate messages.

*Bazooka Joe's Debut*

I had Bazooka Joe
operational around 2am so
I hit the sack for a few hours, took care of a
family commitment, and hit the road eager to put Joe into action. Two
hours later I had gone about 3 miles (Washington area traffic + accident =
gridlock) and eventually arrived after the first battle had ended.

After sides had been picked (Joe was picked last, only fair for an unknown
quantity) the RCTC Rules Committee voted unanimously (1-0) to approve a
"one shot, one kill" rule for Joe for the second battle. I liked this idea
as I couldn't imagine how I would be able to get multiple shots loaded and
fired against a mobile tank.

As seen from our home
basethere
 was a
wide stone
bridgeon
 the left flank, a
narrow wooden
bridgein
 the center, and a
shallow
fordon
 the right.
The Navarone Gun was set up to cover the center bridge and I positioned Joe
in some broad-leafed plants on the right side of the stone bridge (on the
right edge of the photo). On the far side the road went straight for about
5 yards then turned right. There was a narrow goat track running parallel
to the stream on the far side, joining the road very close to the bridge.

There was a pot of gold in the center of the bridge so I took a few
practice shots to get an idea of the range. This was the first time I had
fired a paintball from the assembled unit, and I was pleased to get in the
general area after a handful of shots.

When the battle started there was a lot of action in the center. Joe
brought his Hetzer down to the bridge and collected the pot of gold with no
resistance. After a few minutes Frank's Tiger came clanking along the road
from the rear right. As he turned my way I lined up for a flanking shot –
it was straight but high by a couple of feet. It's a lot harder to judge
the elevation on the short bazooka than on the long guns. I reloaded
quickly but Frank was approaching front-on and I had no shot. It didn't
take long for him to score the first hit ever on an armed infantryman,
knocking Joe' helmet flying. I only found it while cleaning up at the end
of the day, about 3 feet from this position.

Later Frank approached more cautiously, creeping through the long grass
between the road and the goat track. Again I had no shot as he presented
only his front. He landed a nice shot from about 15 feet away.

After reincarnating again I moved Joe across the bridge to the junction of
the road and the track. Things were quiet for a while so I tried a couple
of long shots into the area behind the center bridge. I didn't hit
anything (too high again) but it sure caused confusion for the enemy
commanders over there. It also attracted the attention of the Cromwell. Steve
worked his way along the goat track and showed me only a brief side shot
for a moment - I took the shot but was wide by a few inches. While I tried
to reload the Cromwell raced up and blew Joe away.

After being killed by Frank yet again (and accidentally hitting him square
in the chest – sorry!), there was a long time with no action (I later
learned most of my comrades were in the repair shop) I relocated to the
enemy's side of the battlefield, setting up close to the big tree shown
here
. Doug's Tiger was circling Turncoat Tyng's Cromwell about 30 feet away. I
took my time to line up a shot and splattered Doug's rear – one shot, one
kill! A successful debut, breaking even on combat points and sharing in a
small number of mission points for a net positive result.

2012-09-24 Thread Dave D.
Hey John,

Yes, thanks for letting us get a taste of the Abomination's awesome abilities!!

Had a fun time, had fun sharing the Bofors duties with Stu. I think we did a
fair amount of terrorizing those poor kids manning the Navarrone!! I know I
killed the "command post" (outhouse) and its inhabitant at least once!! Thank
you Doug, for making that all happen. My only regret was not taking any video
of the day's events, I think my head was swimming in all the festivities. I'll
definitely take some footage next time.

AND I'm all amped up for the October battle, thanks for that heads up!!

Stu and I both found the APG to be a "temple"!! He immediately went to work on
the two Shermans sitting at the edge of the small parking lot. He was quiet
busy with sketches and measurement when I arrived.

We then made the rounds, I stopped at the Jagdpanther for some nagging
measurements-mostly the wheels-sprocket. Then it was off to the JS-III for a
more in-depth round of measurement. Now it's "simply" a matter of drawing up a
set of plans, then git 'er started and git 'er dun!! Definitely psyched!!

[TANKS] Re: A Bridge too Far

2012-09-24 Thread TyngTech
It was a glorious day for a battle. The Mullin field is one of the best
we've ever battled on. Hills, streams, bogs and bridges, it doesn't get
any better than that! Turns out that the Cromwell is a BOG BEAST! The
second battle required that we collect "gold" containers from along the
creek. Many of the containers were placed in areas you'd normally wear hip
waders to get to and we had to drive our tanks into that to get the gold.
The Cromwell ate the muck and cattails for lunch.

The first battle was capture the flag and I was teamed up with John, Joe
and Will. Our first flag capture (we captured it three times), John had
already retrieved the flag but was being chased up a hill behind the enemy
camp. I was out of ammo and had three hits already. For the team, I
decided what the hell and ran up the hill, tapping John's tank lightly to
let him know I was there (more like a hard ram), and parking myself between
John and Frank. While absorbing all that Frank could throw at me, Paul
threw a long range shot from the bottom of the hill and hit my turret side,
I was out. I figured John would be following me shortly to a reincarnate
but it turned out he was able to get away and bring the flag home. The
second flag capture was a straight speed run by the Cromwell too and back.
The plan was for the Cromwell to hold back, hidden, and to make for the
flag when the other team went to engage our teams diversionary flank
attacks. Joe went left, sucking Frank in that direction, John and Will
went right, taking Paul and Doug away from the objective, leaving poor
Tracy alone with the Bofors to defend their flag. At this point the
Cromwell made the dash straight for the bridge and to the flag, dodging a
hail of fire from Tracy and back the same way. Somewhere along the run I
managed to get my shoe pretty muddy, but I remembered I had that flag and
just before handing it back, wiped the mud off with it. The third capture
was pretty much the same thing but I had to run up the hill behind the
enemy camp to elude Doug's charging Tiger and then back to base. This old
tank driver isn't as spry as I used to be so I drove the Cromwell home to
our base from the enemy base.

The second battle was one-sided as Joe and Will had broken down leaving a
lone John to defend. After having taken most of the gold and cows, I did a
Benedict Arnold and traded sides to help out John. By this time John had
lost a drive wheel nut and time was just about out so that was the day.

I want to thank the Mullin family for hosting. They did a great job and
even provided valet service, hauling gear and equipment to and from the
battle field with their ATV. I noted a lot of people taking video so I'm
looking forward to those YouTube links shortly.

2012-08-27 Thread Dave D.
Hey Steve,

Nice reply to the "Old vs New" tanks... I echoed your thought process, more or
less.

Oh yeah, as I wipe this brownish err... nose...err...

So I hear you have a guest room or two...

I would definitely be interested!!

What are the going rates?

Just putting dibs in...

Thanks,

Dave D.

For anybody wanting to come in from out of town, I have a couple of
guestrooms available. I'm an hour south of the battlefield.

If you plan on being in the Maryland area during that time, let us know

I must see if a vacation spot is open so I may trek across the great span
of the continent.
