[TANKS] Re: New supply vehicle on the horizon

2009-08-13 Thread Mike Mane
It has been a while since I've read the rules, but perhaps someone
builds a HMMWV with armour and a TOW missile? Would that count as
armour and would it have to be categorized as a missile truck? I
suppose it can still carry supplies.

Video of the first run of this vehicle is uploading to Youtube as I write
this. It's at about 60MB of 497MB so it will still be a little while before
it's viewable. Vid is around 6 minutes. I'll post the link when it's

I built a six-wheel skid-steer solid-axle aluminum Saladin
hull with two M01 motors but it got shanghaied into my office
for a research project. I also built a generic turret
rotate/elevate system with a Saladin turret floor but I did
not complete the magazine or turret body after the hull
was kidnapped. It should be compatible with a GT2000 marker.
It mounts flush to a flat deck and may have enough room
for a small battery to allow self-contained operation
using a second radio Rx without an umbilical.

I will dig it out and snap some photos.

2009-08-11 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
The one I would build if I built one would be the most square turret which
is
the Saladin FSV turret variant of the Aussie Army. Did you already have a
turret constructed Joe? Heck yeah I'd be interested. I have a suitable
turret
rotate mechanism and an extra CS-80 servo for the elevate.

I wonder if the GT2000 marker you sold me a while back would be small
enough to fit inside? By the way, an update on it's maiden journey and vid
is on the way. I just have to get them edited and uploaded. My stupid
satellite internet limits my uploads due to their "far use policy". Full
press
release is forthcoming.

Which turret (Saladin, Scorpion, Bradley, other) ?

Are you interested in beta-testing a prototype
Saladin turret to create an Aussie Fire Support
Vehicle (FSV)?

More progress tonight. Tracks up testing is complete and nothing smoked.
All the battery wiring in the pics is just temporary. I will clean it up
after I
run it outside tomorrow. The empty slots in the hull are for extra
batteries
to increase the run time if needed. It's running at 24V off two 7AH
batteries.
I'll try and get some vids of it running. I built a cover out of foamed PVC
board
for the Vantec RDFR38E ESC and attached an 80mm fan to it. That's what
mounted on the floor of the hull in the center below all the other
electronics.
Keeps it nice and cool. And here are the pics:

[TANKS] Re: New supply vehicle on the horizon

2009-08-09 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
Chrys,

I would say this would be a general breakdown of what is in it:

Tracks: Table Top Chain off Ebay $30 shipped
Sprockets: $25 shipped
Misc. bearings, chain, nuts and bolts: $60
Speed Controller: Vantec RDFR 38E $150 off Ebay shipped
Motors: MY1018Z $140 shipped
Hull: all wood scrounged from my scrap wood piles - free
Batteries: taken from other vehicles I have (21st Century Humvees) - free
Radio: C6C $40 shipped
Radio Controller: Pelican wireless game controller $15 shipped

Total with Electronics: $460
Total without: $255

I'm probably forgetting some stuff. Two months is a pretty quick build
considering
there have been many days in that time that I haven't had the time to work
on it.

It's 40 pitch "table top" chain. The pads are acetal plastic. That kind of
chain is on Ebay
all the time. The drive sprocket is 21 tooth if I remember correctly. The
motors are similar
to the M-01 motors, but without a base and they are 450W each and running at
about 450
RPMs at 24V. I'm using the stock 42 pitch 9 tooth sprocket on the motor
mated to a 40 pitch 9
tooth sprocket on the drive shaft all driven by 41 pitch chain. The motors
can be adjusted
front to rear to keep the drive chains tightened. The outside of the motor
mount slides into
a triangle piece of wood at the front of the hull. The triange is glued and
screwed to the front
angle of the hull and to the track sponsons. That keeps the front of the
mount in place. The
rear of the mount uses two pieces of wood screwed together in an "L" to allow
for space for
the mount to slide to the rear and it also keeps the rear of the mount from
moving. That is
screwed and glued to the upper hull sides. The motors can be removed by
removing 4 screws.
Just to ensue there was no movement of the mounts, I put the top brace on
across the two
mounts. Basically the systems (suspension, motor mounts, suspension arms,
etc.) are all
varients of the designs I used in the Sturmtiger. All of the mount pieces
are made from either
solid wood or 1" plywood I had in the garage. The lower hull pieces are all
1/2" ply except the
lower front slope, that is aluminum plate and can be removed to get to the
drive shafts for maintenance.
I've put power to both tracks and everything seems to be aligned well. Now
time will tell if the tracks
will stay on, but I have a few tricks I can try if they have some issues with
that.

[TANKS] Re: New supply vehicle on the horizon

2009-08-09 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
Oh, and yeah, it's a little over 29" long or 33.5" long with the external
fuel tanks on it.
So 75cm is about correct. It's also just shy of 16" wide. The internal
storage area
is big enough to accommodate the largest of batteries we use on these tanks
and the
suspension is tuned to take the extra weight of such a load.

[TANKS] Re: New supply vehicle on the horizon

2009-08-09 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
It's 40 pitch "table top" chain. The pads are acetal plastic. That kind of
chain is on Ebay
all the time. The drive sprocket is 21 tooth if I remember correctly. The
motors are similar
to the M-01 motors, but without a base and they are 450W each and running at
about 450
RPMs at 24V. I'm using the stock 42 pitch 9 tooth sprocket on the motor
mated to a 40 pitch 9
tooth sprocket on the drive shaft all driven by 41 pitch chain. The motors
can be adjusted
front to rear to keep the drive chains tightened. The outside of the motor
mount slides into
a triangle piece of wood at the front of the hull. The triange is glued and
screwed to the front
angle of the hull and to the track sponsons. That keeps the front of the
mount in place. The
rear of the mount uses two pieces of wood screwed together in an "L" to
allow for space for
the mount to slide to the rear and it also keeps the rear of the mount from
moving. That is
screwed and glued to the upper hull sides. The motors can be removed by
removing 4 screws.
Just to ensue there was no movement of the mounts, I put the top brace on
across the two
mounts. Basically the systems (suspension, motor mounts, suspension arms,
etc.) are all
varients of the designs I used in the Sturmtiger. All of the mount pieces
are made from either
solid wood or 1" plywood I had in the garage. The lower hull pieces are all
1/2" ply except the
lower front slope, that is aluminum plate and can be removed to get to the
drive shafts for maintenance.
I've put power to both tracks and everything seems to be aligned well. Now
time will tell if the tracks
will stay on, but I have a few tricks I can try if they have some issues
with that.

nice work Derek, looking good. at 1/6 it should be about 75cm long,
that looks like about a 22 tooth sprocket on the front, what pitch is
the chain? The gearing looks pretty fast.

2009-07-09 Thread Cold comfort

Looks great Derek, good job. I can't wait to get started on another
project. My wife and I just bought a house two months ago and though I
didn't get my garage, (plan on building one next year),the house does
have a good size 21'x12' work room. I have so many house related
projects on the go I haven't had the time yet to start anything new.
My T-34 is getting new springs to stiffen up the suspension. With
almost an acre of lawn and woods there will be plenty of room for
testing.
Now will it be a halftrack or an SU-152. hmmm

Thanks, the more the merrier:) I'm kinda trying to do a speed build.
Seeing how fast I can get
this one done. :) Then it will be one to the KV-2, but I need to purchase
some stuff for
that build. I want to build that out of PVC sheets which means I actually
have to buy PVC
sheets first. I probably won't get around to that one until this winter
after my wife and I finish
buying our partners out at our pharmacy. That is going to eat up a lot of
my time trying to
transition from being a 10% partner to a 100% owner.

[TANKS] Re: New supply vehicle on the horizon

2009-07-08 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
Yup, 1/6 scale. Looks kinda small, but hey the M113 isn't really that big.
Scaling it
up from the 21st Century 1/18 scale vehicle. Gonna use the Vantec RDFR38E I
have
laying around to power it. Also gonna use the C6C as the radio system. I'm
using the
Sturmtiger "mistake" suspension arms. They fit right in on the M113. I had
bought extra
springs so I have those too. Had the 5/8" drive shafts. I was thinking
about powering it
with 2 EV Warriors I have here, but unless I built a two stage gear box it
would be running
at the full 1000 RPMs from the EV's at 12V. I don't have too much room
along the front angle to
add a larger sprocket to tone the speed down. I may just pick up the
smaller version of the
M-01 motors that are already geared down instead and run her at 24V. I'll
have to do some
pondering about that.

[TANKS] Re: New supply vehicle on the horizon

2009-07-08 Thread Doug Conn
It looks great so far, Derek. Is it 1/6th scale ?

An M113 is one of those vehicles that the hobby absolutely needs. Nice
choice. My only problem with it is that it will bring guys like John more
ammo to shoot at me.

>> I keep joking with the wife that I have bought enough parts to build an
entire tank from what I didn't use on the Sturmtiger.

I remember Frank saying that he had five unbuilt tanks laying around his
shop. I know I have at least one !

It is of course an M113A3 to be used as a supply vehicle or possibly I will

with a turret and one without. I'll have to see how well it turns out
before making that decision. Been
working on it off and on for the last 3 weeks. I keep joking with the wife
that I have bought enough
parts to build an entire tank from what I didn't use on the Sturmtiger.
Well, I'm kinda proving that point.
Only had to buy the drive sprockets and a few nuts and bolts at this point.
Right now the wheels are
my biggest sticking point. I need them to be 4" x 1/2" to fit the tracks.
The wheels I have are just
much to wide and I've already ruined a couple of them trying to modify them
to fit. I guess at this point
I may just have to make some out of 1/2" ply and say the heck with it. I am
planning on making the
ramp in the rear fully functional. Enjoy!
