[RE-wrenches] Fwd: Re: Off Grid Washing Machine

2019-09-18 Thread frenergy

Drake,

After having 2 Stabers in the last 25 years, we were having
too many problems with the second one (mechanically was OK but the
brains were not working correctly and board replacements are pretty
spendy.  So we ended up with an LG model # WM3500CW as of 3 months ago.
Made in Vietnam.

I don't remember all the energy and water specs right now
but being the nerd, I'm sure they were the best.  I had already bought 2
of these for my rentals and have had no complaints.  The clothes really
come out dry. The clothes washing master here says she likes it so
there's a gold star. Only thing I don't like is its not made in USA.  I
never asked Staber but maybe there's an extended warranty option.

Are there any good options for an affordable, low power, low water
usage, resilient, repairable machine with a minimum of electronics on
the market?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Flex panels?

2019-09-18 Thread Alex MeVay
Hi Dana,

For these types of applications, which make up a lot of our business, we
typically point customers to Solbian, who use Sunpower and other cells. I
believe our more budget-minded customers have also been happy with the
Renogy flex panels.

Merlin Solar makes the best interconnect technology I've seen for
semi-flexible panels: thin grids that cover the cells and keep things
working even if the cell is shattered. I believe they do mostly B2B, but I
know at least some of Solbian's panels incorporate their technology.

If your customer does want to consider some framed glass panels, stick to
the smaller sizes (100-160W) to reduce issues with frame flex (both the
vehicle's and the panel's!).

I do share your skepticism about the flex panels... While I might go flex
next time for the weight savings, I have 2x 100W glass panels on my camper
van, installed by the previous owner. After 7 years and 70,000 miles, many
off-road, they are doing great.

Out of curiosity, do you know what brand your customer's panels were and
how long before they gave out?

Best,

Alex MeVay

I also agree with Jerry's comments.
I've been installing and living off grid for over 12 years and have ALWAYS used
conventional appliances (while being mindful of consumption) with no issues
including pumps and mini-split AC's.

I second Jerry's comments. Back in the 90s, we sold Sunfrost DC fridges, DC
fans, CFLs, DC Pumps, etc. Just tons of trouble for very little benefit.
Local fridge techs wouldn't touch them, and frankly they weren't as efficient
as advertised. The closer off grid clients can be to normal, the better. That
means normal wiring, normal appliances, etc. Then you aren't on the hook for
all these other items. I hate to say it, but they just are not as well built
or thought out, as main stream appliances, and the customer (after many bitter
experiences) will eventually get normal equipment.

One other thing: plan on adding a LVD with a big contactor if you do have DC
equipment or you'll ruin the batteries with this little detour down the "road
less traveled"

Re: [RE-wrenches] Off Grid Washing Machine

2019-09-18 Thread Ray
I too have a few Sunfrosts that are still with happy customers. We just
had too many failures to justify the high cost overall. On the super
efficient fridge topic:  I use the Backwoods Solar deep freeze
conversion kit, which gets equally amazing energy numbers for about $500
total.  It just uses a standard, off the shelf chest style deep freeze,
with a thermostat that operates it at 40 deg F.  If anything goes wrong,
nothing on the freezer is altered, so warranty and local service are
still available.

[RE-wrenches] Flex panels?

2019-09-18 Thread Dana
Hey there All -

I have a new client that has an over the top [$100K+] 4X4 off road camper
that has glued down flex PV modules that have died, faded PCV front sheets
with no output.

I suggested a framed module but client in more interested in a flexible type
of glue down module.

Any suggestions on a flexible possibly glue down type of PV module, supplier
suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Fisher PayKal -140 whr/load.

Only complaint is the rinse out on a duvet cover sometimes fine, sometimes
dusty still & requires a second rinse.

I replaced my control board after 12 years - $160. It not fancy, has delayed
start 1, 3, & 9 hours, does a superior high-speed spinout and things dry on
the line or in the dryer quicker. I have run this on OB VFX & Radian
inverters no issues.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Off Grid Washing Machine

Hello Wrenches,

For years, is seemed like the best off grid washing machine was the Staber.
I've read of complaints about cheap plastic parts breaking. The price tag on
this machine is very high for something that isn't mechanically solid.

Are there any good options for an affordable, low power, low water usage,
resilient, repairable machine with a minimum of electronics on the market?

Thanks,

Drake

Wrenches
I have been in the renewable industry for a very many years and l dont
quite understand why someone would spend way to much on a refrigerator or
washer or even range when they have their own issues. I have always
suggested that my customers to buy a name brand machine, efficiency always
a factor of course. Then invest in more batteries, modules, inverter etc.
instead. In the long game it's a better investment with fewer headaches.
Granted in some cases a propane refrigerator might be better but this is
very seldom. But that's just me.
