installing php?

2002-03-25 Thread Lewi

yesterday, I compiled php-4.1.2 from tarball to get running php-gtk-0.5.0, because
php(ver 4.0.6-15) package
from redhat can't ran this.

so after I finish creating php cgi-binary(I compiled just for this, because php-gtk
only need this),
when I ran that there is an error ouput like this

PHP Warning: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php4/imap.so' -
/usr/lib/php4/imap.so: undefined symbol: krb5_defkeyname in Unknown on line 0

I use red hat 7.2 with imap2000c-15, and I compiled php with parameter that php from
redhat has
I don't know why this error come out, because php-gtk still running with that error.

so is there mistake when I compiling php tarball?

Well, mostly good - at least tex is running (before it wouldn't even run).

Now, I need to run this from a cgi script on a webpage (basically, I'm
hoping to generate dvi and ps files as they are needed).

So, what now happens is that all the output from running tex is displayed
on the webpage. How do I redirect the output from this to /dev/null ?
(So, I still want it to create a .dvi file, but I want all the tex
debugging info to not be displayed).

I tried running
system("cd /path/to/latex/files; latex filename.tex > /dev/null");

and that didn't work.

Thanks for any help,
blake

RH72 ships with Apache SSL enabled. Point your browser to
https://servername/ and you should get an SSL connection.

You will need to generate your own key and either get it signed by a
public CA (if you're running a public site), or sign it yourself
(generally acceptable for intranet sites). The instructions for generating
a key and getting a cert are in the Red Hat Customization Guide in the
support/docs section of the Red Hat web site.

I personally can't help you if you opt to work within the Red Hat model,
because I don't use rpm for server software, but if you want to build
your server from scratch, this script will do almost all the work for
you:

http://www.prairienet.org/~dtalk/software/webserver-build.sh

It's a monolithic job that will do apache, ssl, php, mysql, imap, zlib,
mm, mod_perl all at once. Dissected, it will also give you the
information you need if you just want to build apache with ssl. Take
from it whatever ideas you need, or use it as-is. It's fully
documented.

Hope this helps a bit.

perl/tex question

2002-03-25 Thread Blake Thornton

I have a perl question (related to tex) that I can't figure out.

How can I run latex from a perl script?

I know that the following is a possibility:
system "latex filename.tex"

But, the problem is that I need to run latex in the given directory
because tex needs access to all the auxillary files in that directory (bib
files and more). So, I suppose that the more general question is:

Q: How do I make perl run programs in a given directory?

Thanks,

Re: What is the difference on Ix86

2002-03-25 Thread Manuel A. Camacho Q.

i386 means that the package is compiled for a 386 processor. RedHat
comes this way by default so you can install and run it on any intel
architechture equal or better than a 386 processor.

You can recompile your packages so you get them optimized for your
processor (for instance, a PIII would create i686 packages). You are
supposed to improve performance with optimized packages.

add mod_ssl to apache under RH 7.2

2002-03-25 Thread Leila Lappin

Hello all,

I've been to several sites reading about how to add
mod_ssl to apache. Each site has a slightly different
set of instructions, that makes it a little confusing.
Also the directory structure for apache is different
on RH and that makes it more difficult to figure out
things.

I'm hoping for some good advice from the more
experienced members and thank you all for your time in
advance.

Here's what I've found and my questions

At modssl.org chapter 1, "Module Building", I found:

--- on modssl.org chapter 1
Expecting to find mod_ssl under the src/modules/ssl/
subdirectory inside the Apache source tree the
instruction to add it is as follows:

$ cd apache_1.3.x/
$ SSL_BASE=/path/to/openssl ./configure ...
--enable-module=ssl
- end of modssl.org

Then on httpd.apache.org/docs/dso.html I found another
set of instructions that seem to replace SSL_BASE with
--prefix and some install directory name.
Am I to assume the install directory is where my
openssl is installed?

 httpd.apache.org/docs/dso.html ---
$ ./configure --prefix=/path/to/install
--enable-shared=foo
$ make install

What ./configure file is being used in these
instructions? I didn't find any 'configure' file
under apache or openssl subtree. I found seven
different versions of libssl.so and libssl.a under my
/usr/lib and /usr/lib/apache and /usr/include/openssl,
which one of the libraries containing openssl
information is the one for mod_ssl?

Thanks for your advice
Leila

I have to agree memtest86 is an excellent memory tester HOWEVER!

If you use genuine Intel boards (D815, D845 or D850), then you may have
problems. For some reason it always just hangs blank screen flashing cursor
on these boards.

I've never seen the problem on other boards (same floppy disk). God knows
why it won't work, but it's a bit annoying.

Thought you may like to know.

There is no such thing as a screen in C. C provides no such services.

Which is not to say it can't be done, but you have to use non-standard
extensions to the language. On unix-like systems (such as Linux) the
traditional way of doing it is with the curses package. I suggest you
look up 'man curses' or 'info curses' and look at all the other pages
those refer you to. There's also probably a bunch of other info in
/usr/doc or /usr/share/doc under either curses* or ncurses*. Plenty
of tutorials or other info on the web, too.

In ANSI C (in other words, just in the C standard that will work on any
C compiler on any computer), there is no way to do what you want.

There is a library called "curses" that, while not part of the C standard,
is quite portable, and exists on many platforms.

I think the curses routine you want is "setsyx", but you should really
look at curses as a whole if you want to use it.

You have some packages installed that Bill doesn't. Try

rpm -Uvh rpm* popt-1.6.4-7x.i386.rpm \
python-popt-0.8.7-7.x.2.i386.rpm kdeadmin-2.2.2-3.i386.rpm \
gnorpm-0.96-12.7x.i386.rpm

Note where the wildcard is in the spec for the rpm* rpms.

One problem with tar/make/make install is, no dependency checking. So
it's easy to install incompatible packages and have them fail. The other
problem is, many tarballs don't uninstall themselves cleanly, if at all,
and most tarballs don't have provision for a clean upgrade to a later
version.

Yes, agreed -- sorry. Didn't mean to be rude. I just see a lot of
"why can't I update package XXX" questions, usually easy enough ones
to fix. I can see the problem here though. :o(

Yes, indeedy, like I was saying ...

They did the same damned thing with glibc a couple of releases ago. That
practice makes -F well-nigh useless.

Believe me, I'm not arguing that dependencies are a bad thing. I _am_
arguing that _changing_ the dependency structure mid-release is not
amusing, and that seems to be the case here. Again.

Yes, but that's because you didn't upgrade them together. Also you
tried to install popt-something, instead of installing python-popt
which was the one missing (the python popt module used to be in popt
IIRC, and has been split out into a new package).

I'm surprised they did that split in the updates, because the ideal
is that you can indeed do a "rpm -Fvh *" in your updates directory.

There are several packages that depend on the rpm libraries, so have
to be updated at the same time. You do them all together and it works
(so far ... they *could* break this by building rpm2html, rpmfind or
gnorpm using the new rpm package and use a new rpm feature; *that*
really would be dependency hell ;o)

All I'm saying is, if rpm didn't work that way, people would just
cheerfully ignore the dependencies, then complain that things didn't
work ... it happens all the time when people compile stuff from the
tarballs and break their systems. I'd rather have to deal with the
occasional hiccough in upgrades than have to work out dependencies
by hand. I think once they've tried both, people tend to understand
the benefits.

Well, just keep adding the missing packages onto the update command.
There's an update for gnorpm too:

[bill@pikachu os]$ cd i386
[bill@pikachu i386]$ ls gnorpm-0.96-12.7x.i386.rpm
gnorpm-0.96-12.7x.i386.rpm

rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1
librpm-4.0.4.so
librpmdb-4.0.4.so
librpmio-4.0.4.so

 And for these:

Yup, that's what I do; I maintain a script which handles the installs
explicitly in the order required. So far for 7.2, there are at least
two cases of packages which rpm -F can't sort out without help: the Omni
packages, and the Perl updates.

followed by a failed -U.

Neither is ./configure && make && make install, but I'd rather not have
to resort to that for basic system utilities. Something is clearly out

rpm -Uvh popt-* rpm-* python-popt-0.8.7-7.x.2.i386.rpm

Can't get sound to work

2002-03-25 Thread bbales

I am trying to get sound on a SiS m810 system. Redhat 7.2, 2.4.7-10 kernel,
KDE 2. It has Trident 4D wave PCI sound built in to the motherboard.
I've read the howtos, the man pages, numerous tutorials, and searched the web
for help, but found no help. There must be a clue here somewhere.

The machine is dual booted and sound works with windows. cdplayer works with
Linux. Moving the volume control on the taskbar makes a grating sound like a
noisy volume control or, if playing a cd it changes the volume. So, not a
hardware problem.

sndconfig finds the trident, but when it plays the test sound it just goes
away - no sound, no prompt, no error message. Control-c brings back my
prompt. No error messages.

cat test.mp3 > /dev/dsp goes away for four seconds then prompt returns. No
sound - no error messages.

/dev/sound/ has four files: dsp, mixer, mixer0, and mixer1

I installed alsa 5.10. ./configure, make and make install work properly (I
guess) for alsa drivers and alsa lib, but when I try to configure alsa
utilities, I get the following:

./configure
.
checking for ALSA LDFLAGS... -lasound
checking for libasound headers version >= 0.5.8... found.
checking for snd_cards in -lasound... no
configure: error: No linkable libasound was found.
[bruce@bertha alsa-utils-0.5.10]$

One howto says only alsa driver is needed - don't need alsa libs or alsa
utilities.

dmesg shows the following:

modprobe trident produces the following message in /var/log/messages:

Restarting the sound server with KDE control panel for device snd-trident
results in an information message:

device snd-trident can't be opened (no such file or directory)
sound server will continue using null output device.

Same thing with device trident, ac97_codec, soundcore, alsa, dsa

On boot, I get a message to run artswrapper as root. If I do this:

[root@bertha sounds]# artswrapper

It's responsible for the "auto mount" behaviour for CDs in GNOME, I
just thought I'd mention it. I used to remove it but it resurfaced
somehow last time I did an install, and so I guessed it might have
appeared during an upgrade or something.

Failing that I'm stumped, but a few thoughts:

If it's affecting both cdrom and floppy, it's unlikely to be a
hardware issue, so something is broken, either something in your
filesystem or in software.

 · Did you have anything else already mounted there?
 · Have you changed *anything* recently? Errata packages? Kernel?

I didn't go to that much trouble. But I tried up2date and got the same
error when updating rpm. So I tried popt and got the rpm error. I
downloaded everything to try it some more. Always the same problem with
the same errors. This happened both before and after updating up2date.

I still have the downloads and haven't tried them again. I'm guessing
that another attempt will be futile.

Not off hand. But I can guarantee a little research can turn it up. I
can also say they have their own version of XML, used not only with
later versions of IE, but also tied to .NET and Passport and other
projects.

The MS MO is to take what works, tweak it to make it work with their own
product and ONLY with their own product, get people using it, then tweak
it a little more. Want proof? Look for some lawsuit dealings between Sun
and MS concerning a little item you may have heard of: Java. That method
is what got them into court in the first place. Now they're back in
court because they're working to make sure XP works poorly or not at all
with Java.

At least, that's one part of the MO. There's also theft of intellectual
property and pressuring OEMs to play the game the MS way or be punished.
Oh, and destroy the competition through FUD (fear, uncertainty and
doubt), which they've outlined as a strategy against linux (exposed
through leaked memos and emails-search out the Halloween Documents for
but one example).

> What evidence do you have that it's a deliberate misconfiguration and
> not a bug that the vendor will resolve when they're notified?

History. Read about it. It's all over the internet, some phony, some
real. Especially look into their "embrace and extend" policies of years
past, since this has been one of their preferred methods of killing off
the original authors of both software and standards.

While you're at it, you might look into the open portions of .NET and
contrast them with the proprietary portions, some of which have been
leaked. Smacks very much of another instance of using the work of others
(open standards) to help cement the widespread usage of a "standard" so
they can later play the change the standards game they like so much.

As for resolving problems when they're notified, when has MS gone to
much trouble to fix a problem they've been told about? I mean, OTHER
than those that have brought a lot of bad press. IIS is unsafe. They
still haven't fixed it. They aren't going to. They'll silently let it
die.

There are known problems with Messenger, IE and OE that they've yet to
even acknowledge (keep an eye on the security sites and subscribe to
bugtraq if you want to see what's going on). Even after they acknowledge
it, expect the problems to continue for some time before they even
attempt to patch it.

I can't recall what the service was called, something like Active Folder
or somesuch. It was exposed back in 2K server as having a humongous
security problem. They promised to fix it, slipped the date several
times, then decided not to do so and released XP instead. That
information is available on the internet.

Read a couple of the XP newsgroups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
is a good one to start. Check out the types of problems that people are
having daily, many which get reported daily. This has been going on for
months, and nary a single acknowledgment or attempt to fix many of these
things. So much for listening to the users!

Yes, much of this is circumstantial. It was the last few times they did
it, too. But they did it. And it was circumstantial the next time, and
they did it again. I don't have to fall for it too many times before I
can predict it.

Well, it's that, or you have a broken system when you get the
dependencies wrong :o)

Seriously, it's the only sensible approach. I *would* like to see
some more tools for package handling, but there's no serious obstacle
to using the command line.

Each time there's a dependency missing, *add* it to the command line
instead of trying to install it separately. For example, the problem
with the rpm upgrade was solved by including all the rpm packages and
the popt and python-popt packages together in one "rpm -Uvh" command.
The "problem" with trying to install one of the packages was due to
trying to use "rpm -i" instead of "rpm -U" ...

 It's not rocket science.

Help - Can't mount cdrom or fd0

I can't mount floppies or cdrom now - It suddenly stopped working, after years
of no problems. As root, I type:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
or
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt

When I do that, I hear my floppy clicking, or my cdrom noise if I'm trying to
mount that, but then "mount" freezes up and I have to X out of the whole xterm.

I changed fstab to remove "noauto" for the cdrom, rebooted, and was then able
to use the cdrom, but the same process didn't work for the floppy.

I recently deleted /mnt, and then made the directory again , and I
[EMAIL PROTECTED] that may be a "clue." The permissions for that dir
are:

My /etc/fstab file as follows (I've changed it around a little since the prob):

/dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/cdrom /mnt iso9660 noauto,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt ext2defaults 0 0
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

I had things get screwed up when I tried to upgrade mailman via rpm for
a previously installed tarball version. I wound up deinstalling the rpm
and reverted back to the tarball. This happened when I did a 7.1
update. Since I don't have it in the rpm database anymore, the update
doesn't bring in the new mailman rpm.

Yeah, I sure did. Something bad happened. I'm not sure if it's related,
but somehow netscape completely forgot all of it's preferences too.

I solved it by: (from my bash history)

- remove the rpm-python and rpm-devel packages (may have required --force)
- download rpm* from updates
- download up2date-* from updates
- download python-popt*
- rpm -Uvh rpm-4.0.4-7x.i386.rpm popt-1.6.4-7x.i386.rpm --nodeps
- rpm -e up2date-gnome
- rpm -Uvh up2date-2.7.46-7.x.2.i386.rpm
- rpm -qf /usr/lib/python1.5/site-packages/poptmodule.so
- rpm -Uvh python-popt-0.8.7-7.x.2.i386.rpm
- rpm -Uvh up2date-gnome-2.7.46-7.x.2.i386.rpm

This fixed it, and there's probably a better/faster way, but it was only a

When you "install" tripwire, are you running the script:

  /etc/tripwire/twinstall.sh

This will set all of the passwords, parse your config and policy files and
create your database. If this is failing, perhaps you need to un-install
and re-install tripwire.

/dev/dsp error message when logging in...

2002-03-25 Thread Henrik Schmiediche

 Hello,
sometimes - on one of my systems - I get an /dev/dsp error message when
logging in (KDE).

"Error while initializing the sound driver"
"device /dev/dsp can't be opened (permission denied)"

The permissions on the device are as follows:

crw---1 root root 14, 3 Aug 30 2001 /dev/dsp

which is the same as on a system where I do not get this error message. When
I reboot the system the error message goes away (same permissions). How can
I fix this problem without rebooting my system? Does some crucial process
die?

Sincerely,

- Henrik

Yes, this script works fine from the command line. trace will not help since
the script does not even get past the DBI->connect.

Silly question, perhaps, but you _do_ have the Oracle driver installed,

You might also get more information using DBI->trace to get error

Re: Resin with Apache install question

2002-03-25 Thread Leila Lappin

I followed the suggestion I received and checked
configure script under resin. It appears that if I
pass apache's root directory (in my case /usr) the
script will figure out the rest. So thanks to the
tips and advice I've successfully installed resin with
apache support.

Now I'm looking to see if my apache installation has
ssl support. Resin documentation gives detail
instructions and example how to test ssl through
apache with JSSE but not with OpenSSL.

Could someone please give some tips on that?

thanks for your help

ARG: Anyone using DBD::Oracle from Red Hat 7.2

2002-03-25 Thread Rhugga

I cannot for the life of me get a DBI script to run under the default apache
server shipping with RH 7.2

The scripts works fine from the command line, works fine from several
Solaris and SuSE machimes, but low and behold, the red hat box fails
miserably. (surprise) I usually install my own apache server on RH 7.2 since
RH cludges it all up into the wrong directory structure. However, this must
be pushed to several hundred machines and I want to use the default server
for simplicity.

I get to the following line of the script and it does, however, nothing is
written to the error log.

print "DEBUG: datasource=$datasource db_login=$db_login
db_passwd=$db_passwd\n"; # This is okay, all variables visible
print STDERR "Testing apache error log\n"; # this works
my $dbh = DBI->connect($datasource, $db_login, $db_passwd) or die "Can't
connect to DB: $DBI::errstr\n"; # Script dies with no error message print
anywhere

My database info is stored in a module under /var/www/lib/cluster.pm.

CGI scripts ARE working under this directory, in fact, this script runs to
complete if I comment out the DBI->connect entry.

Anyone have similiar problems?

Thanks,
Chuck

I beg to differ. I have found memtest86 to be a pretty good tool that
has found several problems for us that were intermittant and would
sometimes take days or weeks to happen in the wild. Certainly light
years beyond the POST.

I now install it on all machines and can place a simple lilo entry to
boot to it if here are unexplained crashes.

Problems loading a soundcard module...

2002-03-25 Thread Javier Fradiletti

I change my mother, who came with an on-board sound card.
When the sound card is detected, then the kernel start to load all the
modules, and when try to load the one corresponding to the soundcard, never
ends (the system hangs)

Now, when i deactivate the soudcard from the bios, it continuate loading the
module (and hanging the sytem).

I try all the ways i know to enter in "rescue" mode, "emergency", and
others, but i never could change my initialization files to tell linux not
to load that module.

If someone know how to do this, please let me know

Re: kernel blow up

2002-03-25 Thread Allen Wayne Best

ashley:

my first suspection would be memory problem, i.e., a bad chip. unfortunately,
there are not (to my knowlege) a lot of good memory checking programs out
there other than your computers post program. if you have set the "Quick
Power On Self Test" to enabled (or whatever your motherboard's bios calls
it), disable it at the next reboot. (voice of experience!)

assuming you have more than one dimm, you might try taking one out, and
rerunning tripwire. keep swapping out the dimms until the problem disappears.
now you have the bad chip, maybe.

hope this helps.

Sendmai upgrade again

2002-03-25 Thread Szemerédy Gábor

Hello!
I have sendmail-8.9.3-10 with appropriate sendmail-cf-8.9.3-10 and
sendmail-doc-8.9.3-10 on my RedHat 6.0 configured and working well.
Looking on errata there is no new sendmail package on the list.
For RedHat 6.2 errata recommends upgrade to
sendmail-8.11.6-1.6.y.i386.rpm
with adequate cf and doc.rpm.
My questions would be:
1. Is 8.11.6 recommended to RH 6.0 also?
2. Can I install 8.11.6-1.6.y from RH 6.2 errata list on RH 6.0?
3. After the installation have I to configure the new release from the
beginning or
the installation will take over the configured parameters?
( local domains , aliases , antispamming parameters etc. )
Thanks!

How much free space do you have on the drive that has your "Temporary
Internet Files" directory on it (C:\windows\ by default)? If it is less then
the size of the image then you may have a problem as IE will store it there
then copy it over to your target directory. Most other browsers write
directly to your target file. Also remember it has to be over by a
significant amount if the swap file is also on that drive as they are known
to grow during a download of that size as well.

Have fun,

RE: RH 7.2 custom kernel/modules in boot.img

2002-03-25 Thread Chapman, Matt

I myself tried the whole promise thing! The driver is so large that you
have to strip all kinds of stuff out of the boot.img. I kept getting
stopped when the cdrom was not found due to having a cdrom that needed
the adaptec driver loaded!

Gave up and did the expert install and gave the system the driver disk.

Promise has made a driver for uniproc machines for 7.2! I have called
and they are working on the smp version now.

For the record, can you explain exactly which standard IE6 fails to adhere
to?

What evidence do you have that it's a deliberate misconfiguration and not a
bug that the vendor will resolve when they're notified?

RH can worry about it, but it's a (deliberate) misconfiguration with M$
software and not something others can readily do anything about without
stepping into proprietary "standards" (ha, ha).

Complaints/concerns should be directed to Micros~1 telling them to fix
the bugs in their browser.

For the record, that is _precisely_ why I recommended an FTP client. MS
stuff is broken in many ways, most of them intentional to keep people
tied to them and only them. A third-party client gets around this.

In this case, it was a http URL, and an FTP client wouldn't have gotten
it. But a browser that adheres to standards works. So, who's fault would
you say it is?

Well, im sure it will not come as a big shock to anyone. I went ahead and
downloaded the newest Netscape for window(i have 98se). Installed it and
went to the same web site, and low and behold was able to download the ISO
images with no problem. What the heck IE6 is doing to hang when i try with
it i have no idea.
Im not the only person with this problem, and i would consider this a major
problem if i were Redhat. Anyone who has IE and uses that machine to burn
their CD's is surely not getting the ISO's from their paid RHN site. Perhaps
its not ALL versions of IE, i do know of 1 other person i asked to go there
and try it. He had same results as me. Just hangs.

Viva ala Netscape!

When i try to Save Target As, which is what your refering to. It says

Internet Exlorer cannot download from rhn.redhat.com
This file could not be written to the cache.

This is the only web site ive had this problem with ever. Also im thinking
the secure layer has something to do with it. It is a httpS link.

Re: Cant download .ISO's with IE 6.0.. please help or am i just SOL?

2002-03-25 Thread Jim Bija

Well, the problem is that the link is not a ftp link, it is a https link. If
there is a ftp server for paying cutomers i dont know about it. Not sure
what the deal was with pensacola, it had some bug i submitted to bugtraq. I
can install Skipjack just fine on the same machine.

Thank god for the mirror site mirror.hiwaay.net. Which using the same IE 6
browser and machine i was able to use ftp and download at over 400k/Bytes a
sec.

I just thought of something. The .ISO area for subscribers is a httpS link,
could the secure layer be the root of the problem i am having? Perhaps M$
doing something "their" way, and the Redhat web page guy doing it the right
way? The web page im refering to is:
https://rhn.redhat.com/network/channel/download_isos.pxt
Unless your a paying Redhat Network subscriber, dont bother going there it
wont let you in. Best 60$ a year ive spent in a LONG time. If i could just
get the ISO's fromt here i would be much more happy. Anyways, cheers

Jim.

Two things to check, ssh -v remote-host whats does it spit out when you
fail to connect?
But main thing would be to see the logs on the remote-host to see if
