Upgrading Apache

2002-01-05 Thread K Old

Hello all,

I have a webserver hosting aobut 50 sites and have had it for a while. When
I got started we decided to use RH 6.1 cause it just came out.

I've kept up with all of the updates for 6.1, but have not upgraded the
kernel.

I have Apache 1.3.19 currently running and all is fine except I would like to
compile in several modules that did not come with Apache.

In doing this, I am wondering if I should upgrade Apache. I'm sure the
answer is yes, but am wondering how to go about it without having a way to
"undo" everything if something goes wrong with the new install.

Doing this on a live server is different that a test box.

I've thought that maybe installing the newer version in another folder
(instead of having a lot of stuff in /etc/httpd - where everything is now)
would be an option. But what about it overwritting other stuff like httpd?

I am open to suggestions on what to do to make this upgrade seemless.

Also, any one have a sample .configure file that will pretty much compile
everything there is to be compiled with Apachelike all the modules and
PHP, PostgreSQL, MySQL support and so forth?

Any help is appreciated,

Kevin

Re: Problems getting RH 7.2 to boot properly

2002-01-01 Thread K Old

Ok, well, I've looked in the messages log and have found the following. It
looks like the xfs is trying to start and can't (cause there is no sound
card) and then it seems to start a chain reaction with all other services.

Sometimes I can actually get into the OS and start X, but a few minutes into
the session, the mouse and keyboard freeze and I have to physically shut the
machine down.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this? I assume turning off xfs on startup is
my first step.

Kevin

Re: How do I start Apache with SSL? (was: Simple Question)

2002-01-01 Thread K Old

Ben,

Documentation for Apache is at http://httpd.apache.org/docs/
Documentation for ApacheSSL is at http://www.apache-ssl.org

Basically all you do is in your httpsd.conf file, change all the ssl key, crt
and csr information via the tags, then just restart the httpsd demon and
enter in your password for the new certificate.

Hope  this helps,
Kevin

Problems getting RH 7.2 to boot properly

2002-01-01 Thread K Old

Hello all,

I have setup several RH machines and the latest one I've got has stumped me.
The stats of the machine are:

Athlon 1 Ghz
128 MB RAM
40GB Maxtor HD
Transcend Motherboard

All equipment is brand new and has been exchanged a few times cause certain
components weren't working right, but now everything seems ok.

I am having all kinds of (what seems to be) memory leaks or something like
that, during bootup.

I am attaching my boot log, for those that can help, and can send other logs
if needed..

I don't know what to do from here.

All help is appreciated,

Kevin

Re: Install problem

2001-12-26 Thread K Old

Stephen,

I ran into the same problem with the following:

Transcend Motherboard
Athlon 1Ghz
128 MB RAM
Trident Video Card
Linksys Etherfast 10/100 Lan Card
Maxtor 40GB IDE drive

but I finally got it to work after getting the installation to format
all of my partitions (used for linux) in the ext3 filesystem type, instead
of ext2. It is still a little sluggish if I have X running and all that,
but other than that, if it is just run from a command prompt, everything is
fine.

Just for clairity, I am assuming you're installing RH 7.2.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Problems with X and 7.2 (still not working)

Hello all,

I posted this the other day and got a response suggesting I look in the BIOS

with resolution make everything look crazy.

So, I'm back to square one. Anyone have any ideas of what I can
do.surely someone has got to have some problem like this.

Problems with X and 7.2

2001-11-28 Thread K Old

Hello all,

I have a problem with the X server and gettin it to work on the 7.2 install
on my laptop. Here's what's happened:

- First, I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 with the Trident CyberBladeXP
video card. This has just been supported by XFree86 in the 4.10 release.
Some of the rpm's in the 7.2 release are 4.1.0, but others are the 3.3.6
release.

- I did get RH 7.2 installed. X was not coming up though, so I downloaded
XFree86 4.1.0 and manually installed it. Everything is fine except I can
only get it to work in a small window in the ceter of my screen, not like
normal where it takes up the whole screen.

I saw somewhere where someone with the same model as mine (of laptop) did
the same install and had the same problem, and used a command line switch
(vga=791) and that corrected it for him. I did that and during the boot up
it takes up the whole screen, but when I start X, it does some processing,
but nothing ever comes up and I have to manually shut the computer down.

Can anyone offer any advice on how I can get this working full screen?

Thanks,
Kevin

Upgrading to 7.1 without complete install

2001-05-01 Thread K Old

Hello,

I have a server that is running RH 6.1 and I'd like to upgrade it to 7.1
without doing a complete install. Can I just apply all of the rpms in the
updates for 6.2 and 7.0? I'd also like to take advantage of the Red Hat
Network to automate this in the future, but don't have the proper packages
on my server...any idea what I need?

Any advice on how I can bring this system up to date and on a semi-auto
basis keep it regularly updated?

Thanks,
Kevin

Web Server authentication via web form?

2001-04-14 Thread K Old

Hello everyone,

This is kind of a weird question, but I need to know if and how this can be
done. I have a client that currently uses the webserver (on apache that is
the .htaccess files) to autheticate the users. Well, the users are not
wanting to have the popup box that prompts them for their username and
password, they'd rather have an HTML form inside a page. I've never heard
of doing it this way, but I'm sure there is - I just don't know it.

Any ideas how I can do webserver authentication via a web form?

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: Ping Local IPs

2001-04-02 Thread K Old

David,

These IP's go down every now and then and for no reason...I've looked and
can't figure it out.my Perl script will work and do the job if I could
only get the Net::Ping module to work. Everything is installed perfect, but
for some reason it returns an undef value instead of a 0 or 1.

Thanks for your help though.

Ping Local IPs

2001-04-02 Thread K Old

Hello all,

I'm writing a Perl script that will ping all of the IPs that are setup on my
server and print if they are active or not. I'm using the following code:

use Net::Ping;

$p = Net::Ping->new();
$p->ping($ipaddress);

This should be working, but is not returning a 1 or 0, only a undef. The
address(es) I'm pinging are on the machine that is sending the
request...does this have something to do with why this isn't working?

Any ideas on how I can do this?

Thanks,
Kevin

Store cron scripts?

2001-03-29 Thread K Old

Hello all,

I have a Perl script that I am calling with a cronjob and was wondering if
there was any particular folder that I should store it in (just for
organizational purposes). I know that file placement doesn't matter, but
want to try to keep all of the scripts in one place and wanted to know
everyone's opinion. I was thinking I could just create a directory under
/usr/local - something like cronscripts and put them in there. Anyone have
issues with me naming it "cronscripts" for security issues?

Thanks in advance for your insight.

[With More Info] RE: Reinstall LILO manually?

2001-03-07 Thread K Old

Ok, I have done some investigating.

The original response I got from doing a /sbin/lilo -v is

LILO version 21.4-4, Copyright (C) 1992-1998 Werner Almesberger
'lba32' extensions Copyright (C) 1999,2000 John Coffman

Reading boot sector from /dev/hda
Merging with /boot/boot.b
Fatal: 'linear' and 'lba32' (-l and -L) are mutually exclusive.

My lilo.conf file looked like this:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
linear
default=linux

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hda5

other=/dev/hda1
label=dos

I modified it (based on the email below) to look like this:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
lba32
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
linear
default=Linux

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22
label=Linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.16-22.img
read-only
root=/dev/hda5

image=/dev/hda1
label=Win98

After I do a /sbin/lilo -v it returns the same error message from above.

Any ideas what I should do?

Thanks,
Kevin

Bill,

Thanks for the reply. You read my mind (and my machine..) I have a 20GB
drive on this machine and the partition it is on is about 4GB, but that
could be causing it. Do you know where I can find more documentation about
LBA32?

I'll post my progress to the list.

Thanks again for your help.

Reinstall LILO manually?

2001-03-07 Thread K Old

Hello all,

I was wondering if I could reinstall LILO manually without having to go
through the reinstall process for RH 7.0. For some reason LILO did not take
control of my MBR and the only way I can get into RH7 is to boot from a
floppy. I almost lost the floppy the other day, but was lucky and found it.
  So to keep from being dependent upon a floppy I've decided to get to the
bottom of this problem. I have edited the lilo.conf file and tried to test
it by starting lilo, but I get an error messagesomething to do with
memory...if I need the specific error message I can provide it. Should I
use another boot loader? If so, are they easy to configure. I basically
want the option to be able to boot into either Win98 or RH.

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: PHP shipped with Red Hat 7

2001-02-23 Thread K Old

Michael,

I too have experienced the same problems with the PHP rpms that came with
RH7 and can vouch that you must build PHP from the tarball in order to get
it to work.

>Well, I notice that my RH7 box doesn't have apxs installed.  I've

>get if you home-roll your own apache, but I have no idea what it's for.

>run the "php phpinfo()" command in the first place -- right?

I did not include the flag that involved apxs when building apache and all
seems fine. I don't think it is a requirement. If I understand that you
are at the command line and running the command "php phpinfo()", then that
isn't the ultimate proof that you've installed PHP correctly.

Make a page called lookatme.php with the following in it:

You should get a page displaying a table with all of the information about
the installation of PHP on your system.

Also, just some information about the new version of Apache that is worth
reading:
http://www.redhat.com/support/manuals/RHL-7-Manual/ref-guide/s1-installation-upgradingapache.html

>
>Any clue why Red Hat would have compiled PHP to expect a program that
>isn't installed with their Apache package?

Probably just a mistake.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Problems with keeping IP's up

2001-02-23 Thread K Old

Hello Everyone,

I am having a problem keeping the IP addresses up on my server. I do have
the ONBOOT flag set to "yes" in each ifcfg file, but there are a few of them
that do are not started upon bootup and I must manually do that.

Can anyone guide me on writing a utility that will make sure that my IP's
are running and if they are not, restart them. I would probably want to run
it every 30 minutes or so.

Also, there are a few IP's that do not get very many hits and it seems that
they become "offline" and will not respond to ping after no one trying to
access them for either days or weeks at a time.

Any help is appreciated,

Kevin

2001-02-22 Thread K Old

Kevin

Raoul,

Make sure that you are logged in and building it as root. That's what it
looks like to me. Let me know if that isn't the problem.

PHP rpms not working

2001-02-19 Thread K Old

Hello all,

I asked about installing PHP last week and got responses that I needed to
just download the RPM and install it. Well, I did and it didn't do a thing.
  No modifications to httpd.conf and I can't even find mod_php.c or
mod_php4.c.

I assume that I should just build it manually using the tar.gz file?

Just checking to see if there are any reasons why I wouldn't want to do
that.

Thanks,
Kevin

Automatically Restarting Sendmail

2001-02-14 Thread K Old

Hello all,

Every now and then I'll start getting messages like this to the root account

Subject: Cron  /usr/bin/update_pop
Message: Cannot send HUP to 12493

Usually I just restart sendmail and everything is fine. But, is there a
script or something that I could have run every half hour or so to check and
see if certain daemons are running (in this case sendmail) and if it isn't,
restart it?

I know there has to be something I can do to keep from email from being down
until I can restart sendmail.

Any help is appreciated.

JSP on Red Hat

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what exactly I need to have
installed to get JSP functionality on Apache. I assume I'd need the Jserv

an order I should install them in?

Anyone have any idea where I'd get all of the necessaries in RPM format?

Changing password...unusual problems

Hello all,

I have a Red Hat 6.1 server and made a password change to an account, but it
did not take to the account, instead the previous password was still valid
even after I changed it.then the freaky partabout a week after all
this happened (today) the new password is now in effect.

Anyone have any idea what could have caused this or why something like this
would happen?

I'm the only administrator and all security measures have been taken and I
have checked that nothing has happened as far as security goes.

Any help is appreciated.

Apache source????

2001-02-12 Thread K Old

Hello all,

I am trying to add a couple of packages to my server (PHP4 and mod_perl) and
each installation has some interaction with Apache and is asking for my
Apache source. The thing is, Apache came in the server install with RH 6.1
Kernel 2.2.12-20, so I'm not sure where the source is? I understand that
when RH installs it, it is via an RPM so, if that is the case and I want to
either upgrade Apache or add packages like PHP4 and mod_perl, what should I
do?

Any help is appreciated.

Add POP via web form

2001-02-11 Thread K Old

Hello,

I would like to allow to admin users on my server to be able to add POP
accounts via a web based interface. I understand I can write a perl or
shell script to do this (maybe using the system() function, etc), but I
would also like to allow them to only be able to add as many as up to 20
accounts.

Does anyone have an idea (or sample code) of how I would go about putting
this script together?

Finding files that are not in a directory (in Perl)

2001-02-09 Thread K Old

Hello,

I'm trying to write a script that will recurse through a directory structure
and write all files not specified in a "control" file into a second file.
So, to break it down. I would give you file with a list of filepaths each
one on a new line (i.e. /docroot/bvdev1/index.html). I would then run the
script starting in a certain directory (i.e. /docroot/bvdev1/). It would
then write out all files not listed in the first file to a second file.
Because /docroot/bvdev1/index.html was in the first file, it would not be
written into the second file. /docroot/bvdev1/webmaster.html would be
written to the second file.

I have attempted at this script and have gotten stuck when trying to do the
matching. What I have so far is below.

I would appreciate any help that anyone can offer.

Kevin

DSL via USB modem

Hello all,

I was wondering if there was anyway that I can an USB ADSL modem with Linux?

The modem does support the PPPoE and PPPoA protocols so I'm sure there is

Any chance it might work with the 2.4 kernel? I currently have RH 7.0

All of the documentation I've read says I can't, but I thought I would check

Execute URL via Perl

2001-01-29 Thread K Old

Hello all,

I understand this might be a little off topic, but I no where else to turn.
I am writing a perl script that I would like to have connect to a secure
server and send some information (from a web form).

I thought I could just do this by executing a command like this:

exec lynx https://secure.domain.to

But, evidently lynx does not support secure connections.

Does anyone know how I can connect and submit information to a secure server
via the command line?

Or is there a Perl module I'm not aware of?

Thanks,
Kevin

Imagemagick and Perlmagick

Hello,

I am trying to install a perl module that will allow me to display
images/thumbnails via perl. It is called Imagemagick and is at

Also, via the CPAN module I have added the Perlmagick addition to the system

However, when I try to reference this module and use it, I get the following

IP's not starting on bootup

2000-11-30 Thread K Old

Hello,

I'm having a problem with the IP's on my server. I'm having to manually
start a few of the IP's that are on my server (ifup ifcfg-eth0:[some
number]) . It seems that every new IP I add to the server must be manually
restarted whenever the server is rebooted.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to start all of the IP's when the
server boots up?

Thanks,
Kevin Old

Changing Uppercase files to Lower case files easily?

2000-04-04 Thread K Old

Hello,

I was wondering if there was a way to rename files in Linux that are upper
case to the same name only in lower case?

I have about 400 files that were renamed to upper case when I FTP'ed them to
the server and I need a quick way to make them lower case.

If anyone can offer any help I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Kevin

Does anyone have Net::SSLeay installed? I tried the RPM.

1999-12-27 Thread K Old

Hello,

First of all thanks to everyone who has helped with my previous emails.

Has anyone used/installed Net::SSLeay on their Linux 6.0 machine? I have
been to http://www.bacus.pt/Net_SSLeay/index.html and downloaded the RPM and
have installed it, but I don't know what to do from there to make sure it is
installed.

Also, how can I use the 'whereis' command to find Net::SSLeay?

I have tried 'whereis Net::SSLeay' and it doesn't work.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Kevin

Can Majordomo run on 6.0?

1999-12-26 Thread K Old

Hello,

I have heard that RHL 6.0 has some RPMs that have errors in them that and
will not work with Majordomo mailing list program.

Is this true? If so, what do I need to do to ensure that nothing will go
wrong when I install it on my system.

Is anyone else running Majordomo on a 6.0 system?

I'd like to hear of any problems you've had installing it (if any).

Thanks,
Kevin

Installing X and Gnome

1999-12-20 Thread K Old

Hello,

I have a Linux 6.0 server and would like to install X and Gnome interfaces.
I will be installing them over a phone line so I'll have to upload the RPM
files.

My question is, which files do I upload (off the linux 6.0 CD) for X and
Gnome?

Also, where do I upload them to? Which directory and how do I get there?

Thanks,

Net::SSLeay 1.05 installation help needed

1999-12-14 Thread K Old

Hello,

I am in need of help in the final stages of getting Net::SSLeay 1.05
installed on a Linux 6.0 box.

After running the Makefile.PL and running make install I am trying to run
test.pl to make sure it works, and I am getting the following output:

1..16
ok 1
perl: error in loading shared libraries:
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005/i386-linux/auto/Net/SSLeay/SSLeay.so:
undefined symbol: SSL_library_init

Yes, I do have root access and I am running this from the root account.

It seems that there is something wrong with the SSLeay.so library, but I
need to know what to do to fix it.

Below is a script I did of commands that you might help someone identify my
problem:

Script started on Tue Dec 14 17:01:23 1999
[root@ns Net_SSLeay.pm-1.05]# perl test.pl

NetSSLeay1.05 Installation

1999-12-08 Thread K Old

Hello,

I am using some CGI scripts that require the use of NetSSLeay 1.05 and I
would like to talk with those that have installed it on their servers.

How do I do a "whereis" on the command line to find where NetSSLeay is? Is
there a certain directory that I need to install it in?

The setup file has me run a ./Makefile.PL file, then run a install file.
How do I know the installation is complete?

Any help is appreciated.

I'm running a Linux 6.0 installation.

Thanks,

Kevin

Adduser via CGI?

1999-11-10 Thread K Old

Hello,

I was wondering if there was some way to control adduser via CGI scripts.
I'm looking to send data to it only, not delete.

If anyone has seen scripts like this or can offer any help I would greatly
appreciate it.

I am looking for C/C++ or Perl scripts or libraries.

Thanks,
