Getting Linux on a retail laptop, without paying for Windows

2003-02-10 Thread Caleb Groom
Does anybody know of a major laptop manufactorer that will sell a system
with Red Hat or any other linux distribution pre-installed? If not
Linux, perhaps without an OS?

I'm pricing laptops but I know that some of the cost is OS related.
Having a MS XP license isn't something that will be of any use to me.

I stress _major_ company, like Dell, IBM, Gateway, HP/Compaq, Sony,
Toshiba, etc.

Have you tried calling yet? Please do so and let us know how it goes.

I will find the time next week and call all of the big boys to see if I can.
It has been over a year since my last laptop and at that time...no luck. :-((
Times change right? It is time they give us a choice. It is about time!!!
The more that people call these big companies to order equipment without
an Operating System pre installed, the better off the world is.
We should ALL have a choice! The only way that is gonna happen is if
you raise some hell when you try to purchase your laptop. Go for it and don't
back down.

Do a google search for Emperor Linux. They sell a variety of major brand
laptops w/ Linux pre-installed (Sony, Thinkpad, others...). Caveat Emptor:
they are a bit pricey..

Is it IBM's choice to continue this practice?
Or are they still bound by legal contractual obligations to ship with an MS
operating system?

Same thing with Dell I think. The only way I could get around this last year
was to buy a PowerEdge with no OS loaded from their Business sales.
Loaded Linux on it and its actually a nice workstation.

Anyone know if IBM is contractually bound? I will be in the market for
a new Thinkpad soon and would like to know.

That is what I thought. Can you have your friend find out how log this

If I recall correctly, a friend that works for Informix (now part of
IBM) said that the contract with Microsoft for their desktop and laptop
for business and home/home office lines was just negotiated. I think we
are stuck for a while with this. I just sent an email to him to confirm
this.

Re: Getting Linux on a retail laptop, without paying for Windows

2003-02-10 Thread Tass
What I've heard on this matter is that the M$ contract states only that builders
can no longer sell empty chassis. There must be AN OS with the computer.

This was to counter the practice of quantity purchasers buying blank boxes,
(and by M$'s concern) loading a single copy of some M$ OS on dozens of
boxes with only one license. But, they would be hauled into court by every
company and State in the US if they went so far as to say it HAD to be an M$ OS.
So they left it as *an* OS knowing full well that theirs would be the most
likely candidate, and thus another sale made.

Not wanting to loose thousands upon thousands from customers not wanting
to spend the extra for the installed OS, BUT, also not wanting to breech or
lose the contract with M$, for these special customers they would build an
empty chassis to the customers' specs, then, just before sealing up the box,
they toss in a floppy containing a copy of free DOS. Thus, they have
met the contract stipulation of providing *an* OS, but not having to charge
the client for the product, or installation.

I haven't confirmed this for myself. But he who told me has a strong purchasing
arrangement with Dell, so, could be. :-)

I have heard this to but I cannot confirm. Remember, these decisions are made
by big time businessmen with $$Billions at stake. I called IBM today for fun
and talked to a sales rep. He said things like: I feel your pain.
Believe me I have lost some million dollar sales because of this issue.
There is nothing he can do except take my complaint to his supervisor.
(again) Then he joked about the fact I should try to contact Palmisano. hehe

Maybe someday folks, we can buy a Thinkpad with Redhat pre-loaded..maybe
someday. Things like this change very slowly, especially when there are
$$Billions at stake.
