Re: RedHat 6.2 fails on Pentium 4?

2002-03-07 Thread Kapeller Rene PSI

I decided to install on a PIII system and then swap the disk. I have not
done extensive testing yet, however so far it looks ok and it would be
an acceptable workaround.

I'm planing to go to 7.2 sometimes, but as we have 100 systems and lots
of home grown software, this needs some planing and testing.

Solution: Download the update for the 6.2 boot images

Great..

Still I would like to mention RedHat 6.2 still has the bug in
the setup in case of two or more NIC's. You can workaround
this by just configuring only one or none of the NIC's during
setup. You can configure them afterwards...

Sorry, problem NOT solved !!!

someone has changed the hardware on my test environment on the weekend,
thus I was testing on a Pentium III this morning by mistake.

To be more precise:
Futjitsu-Siemens SCENIC L Pentium III, MB D1219, Intel 815: works fine
Futjitsu-Siemens SCENIC L Pentium 4, MB D1327, Intel 845: fails

I disabled the onboard LAN in the BIOS and pluged in a epro100 card.

Again:
The kernel seems to boot ok. Disks and LAN card are recognized and
network can be access when using bootnet image.
But at 'Getting package information...' the RH-6.2 installation bombs on

  File /usr/lib/anaconda/comp.sys
 line 46 in __getitem__
return self.packages[item]
 KeyError: basesystem

Thanks for any hint !

Kernel might panic or something. Remember, Linux didn't work with Pentium
4's until recently. I don't think anything before RH 7.0 or 7.1 was P4
ready (due to the version of included kernel).

I got some install problems with rh61 end 62 on several machines, of the
same kind as yours.
I used to solve them by installing only the bare os, by editing the
detailed package list and removing anything. Then, after booting the new
system, I had to install manually all the packages I needed.
Maybe you can try that ?
BTW I don't think this problem is related to P4
