RE: samba working, but can't see computer in "my network places"

2003-02-04 Thread Larry Brown
Just set up samba to be a wins server. In the smb.conf file you have the
option "wins support =". Set it to yes and then go into Ethernet properties
on the win9x and set them to use a wins server and list the linux box IP as
the wins server IP. This should solve any master browser issues as long as
the linux box is running in tandem with the others. After implementing this
I have never had network neighborhood issues. Make sure you restart samba
after the change in smb.conf and restart the M$ boxes.

I would like to point out that this is not necessarily a linux problem.
I have both a windows98 and windowsxp machine that refuse to allow
any computer windows or linux to show up in their network places or
network neighboorhod. Yet if I do a find computer search they will
always show the desired computer and all its shares. I looked on the
web and microsoft gives half a dozen reasons why this can happen
the top of their list is a never ending master browser war. So far
I haven't solved it since the find computer allows you to open the
share and copy and paste between the two and printing is not effected
it hasn't been worth the time.

2003-02-04 Thread Matthews, John
I agree that looking at the browsing would be a good place. Sorry
if this was already covered, but did you make sure that Browsing is enabled
in your smb.conf file?

"John Nichel" has a good point. Wiping out Windows and installing
Linux generally fixes most problems.

If that does not work, walk through the docs in
/usr/share/doc/samba*/docs/BROWSING-Config.txt
/usr/share/doc/samba*/docs/BROWSING.txt
/usr/share/doc/samba*/docs/DIAGNOSIS.txt

I have yet to not find the problem with these docs.

Well, as much as I'd love to do that, the 300+ users on those windows

I have basically the same setup/problem. I can't see the linux box, but I can connect
to it by "adding a network place" \\mysambaserver\etc

If that helps

2003-02-03 Thread John Salamone
I was having the same problem as you. I set up my Linux michine to be a wins
server then I set up my win98 michine as a wins client. After I did that, I
stopped my Linux IPchains by typing service ipchains stop. After that you
should be able to at least see it in NN. Try it and see if it will work.

Strange. Ah-well, when all else fails, wipe Windows and install Linux.
But if you don't want to go that far, you could try restarting Windows. :)

this may be very silly but did you restart the win2000 machine? (Win95
doesn't appear to refresh its network thingies unless you reboot so 2000
might be the same.)

Also try http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/ for a troubleshooting
guide on Samba that I used to get my stuff working.

In your samba configuration file...you're using webmin, rightclick
on Windows Networking in the samba module, and make sure that the
workgroup is set to the same as your Windows workgroup name. You might
also want to check the netmask of your Linux box, and make sure it

No, that's the problem, it's not showing up. I know it's a picky thing, I'd
just like to see it there. With Windows 2000 they changed network
neighborhood to "my network places" for some reason.
