[Repeater-Builder] Re: Repeater Help

2004-01-06 Thread Budd
Happy New Year to all;
Some of you may remember my starting a similar Spectrum bashing
thread a couple of months ago when I foolishly agreed to try to
resurrect the Tucson 223.94 MHz Spectrum Communications repeater
last summer.
After getting literally ripped off by Spectrum Communications,
(Story too long and probably not of interest), I've been researching
a better approach.
I've learned of Micor and GE conversions for 220MHz. I've been told
the Micor conversion is easiest and best.
I'm searching for a High-band Micor for conversion to 222 repeater.
The models I'm told that will work are TLD4071-4074 (older 8
channel), TLD5271-5274 (older 4 channel), TLD8271-8274 (Newer 4
channel).
The documentation says modification of a TLD5274 or TLD8274 requires
the least component changes.
If you know of any of these please let me know of availability &
price.
I would like to get this frequency occupied and active again.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or assistance.

PS. A second less pressing request. Please delete all the
unnecessary repitition when replying to posts. My mailbox was filled
today by the digests of messages containing the previous 5-15
messages in each of their replies.

Thanks & 73

Sounds like a great money maker. Maybe from the donations taken, I
won't have to beg for money to host the Repeater Builder site next year.

So, this year at Dayton, Repeater Builder will be accepting donations
for the opportunity to smash a Spectrum Repeater with a hammer.

Now I'm kidding..

Let's move on folks, I believe this thread is dead

I think you should send it to Kevin so he can hit it with a hammer, when
he is done I will come over and melt some of it with a blowtorch while
he takes the pictures, I am sure someone will step in with a
hammerdrill. Maybe bring it to dayton and charge 1 buck a hit in the
flea market area, you could then buy a converted unit from Kevin.

The reciever is pretty good, but from everything we have found here the
transmitter will work best in the trunk of a tucker torpedo - otherwise
using it as portable ballast from an amphibious car would be the best
way to use it. Both GE and Motorola made a repair kit for the spectrum
radio family, look for a micor or a mastr at a hamfest.

To you, wise cracks. To most, relating experience.

Your experience does not reflect that of most of us.

Yes, they can be made to work, but for how
long until they again cause problems to others?

Why do you think Spectrum's CS is so bad? Is it
because they can't put up with all the CS needs
without cutting into their profits too hard? Is
it due to the high cost of solving too many problems?
I'm not saying it is, but it is a worthy question.

Sure, even a WV can run like a Ferrari given enough 'tweaking' (replace
the engine, tranny, body, Etc.), but is it worth it?

Hmmm... I think I have one around somewhere. Never
had any problems comparable to those with a Spectrum.
Why isn't it in use? Went with GE/Motorola units.
In fact, the only close problem unit I had was a
Hamtronics UHF Exciter/PA. (Yes, I know - a VHFE clone)
I would not put up with that POS either.

So, a mixed bag is good enough to not criticize a company?
Let me email you direct about some property I have
that is *mostly* HazMat-free. ;->

Probably true. Most of my repeaters
regularly move +/- 5 kHz. Heh heh.
(I know - another wise crack)

> There's probably no reason your unit can't be
> made to operate well.

Again, for how long? I had one that could be tuned to any five
frequencies you wanted. Or was that any one plus four more...

What you are seeing on the list is a lot of people who have had negative
experiences with Spectrum trying to not let another builder go through
the same. I have little doubt most would help if they thought that is
the best course of action.

Most of the people are sincere when they say to look for something else.
I was sincere when I suggested selling the Spectrum and buy something
else with the proceeds. In my opinion, that is the best course to take.

Sometimes it's just better to join up with a compatible group of hams and
help their group. That often becomes a win-win situation - some people have
access to equipment, some have access to good sites, some are great groups
that can expand their system with a few like-minded members helping out the
coffers. I know that if I ever moved to California, several groups that I'd
be bringing my donations of equipment, controllers, etc. to and we'd all be
happy campers.

[Repeater-Builder] re: request for spectrum repair help

2004-01-06 Thread skipp025
It's very disappointing to me reading most
of the replies to Kevin's request for help
repairing his Spectrum Repeater. Most of
you would rather fire off wise cracks about
Spectrum equipment than help him out.

While Spectrum seems to be very corneous
rectum about customer service, their products
do work for the most part, when properly set
up and cared for. It's not rocket science to
research and improve even the most basic
circuits.

Most of you appear to have never seen a VHF
Engineering Receiver, early repeater boards
from 60's and 70's. This would include the
famous Clegg 220 repeater made from a split
radio. Early repeater layouts are where many
of us "cut our teeth" and learned how to make
these less than perfect circuits perform as
best possible.

I've got quite a bit of Spectrum equipment;
their more recent receivers are pretty nice.
Their transmitters are a mixed bag, but every
one I have seems to work as expected for what
each circuit is.

So Kevin, first off… I probably have the manual
for the unit you have, would be willing to
work with you off the list to keep the "know
it all's" from laughing too hard. The temperature
problem you report is not that uncommon from
the type of layout installed in your unit, not
specific to the Spectrum Brand. The early 90's
unit I have similar to yours has never moved
more than 300 Hz since I bought it.

There's probably no reason your unit can't be
made to operate well.

[Repeater-Builder] VHF PLL GE MASTR2 repeater for sale/trade

2004-01-06 Thread kk2ed
Hello all;

I have a nice clean GE MASTR2 100w continuous duty base repeater,
currently on 147MHZ. I do not have the GE repeat card, as I used an
external controller on it, but it does have the audio and 10v cards
in it. No hacks or mods, just a simple cable wired to the rx/tx tray
for the necessary signals. Ready to go, just add crystals (ICOMS
included)! Not in a cabinet at the moment, but I can get one if
needed.

Prefer to swap outright for a Micor 110w VHF 150 base repeater, or a
75w UHF repeater. Will consider other trades.

I also have a 100w (I think) GE MASTR2 on 443MHZ, in cabinet, but
needs to be tested. Most likely good, but has been in storage
awhile.

Located in central NJ.

Any interest, email me direct.

RE: [[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Help]

2004-01-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Back in the mid-1970's, one of the Central Oregon 2-way radio shops made a
bunch of 2-Meter and 440-MHz Repeaters using E. F. Johnson mobile radios.
They worked extremely well, and many of them are still going strong, all
over the state, never having had a failure. The receivers were extremely
sensitive, selective, and the transmitters survived long, key-down transmit
cycles on very inaccessible remote mountaintops. And they were cheap, even
back then!

Kevin,

Are you looking for 2 meters or 440? You may want to look into a Johnson
530 or 559 depending on which band you want. They are cheap at swap fests
and very dependable, I usually buy them for 5 to 15 dollars. I have been
running one on each band for over five years and zero failures. Don't get
me wrong, I feel there is not much better radio than a GE Master II, I have
several of them also but for ease of conversion and if high power is not
needed you can't beat the Johnson.

Kevin,I know that the RECTUM (oops spectrum) isn't much, but you
mentioned frequency drift. First, you might want to go through the exciter
board and resolder all connections (provided that you've checked the simple
stuff, ie power supply regulation, dirty trimmers, etc.). If that does not
yield anything, then maybe you could replace the trimmer for the xtal as it
could be affected by temperature. Please don't flame me for trying to help
him, i know how it can be when you have nothing to put on the air.JamesKevin

Good luck, If you check with some of your local Motorola shops, Micors are
coming out of service regularly (if any are left, I know we had a few).
Micors and MastrII's in their virgin forms can be had cheap or free in many
cases. Even if you get a mobile style of either, it is good.

Mastr II PA's should be easy to rebuild?? A few new transistors, etc. and
some TLC and that would work better than any ham grade stuff.

Well Kevin,
You've started it all again. It's nice to see I'm not the only one with a
problem. I'm glad that GE NEVER made an exciter board with a problem It too
might get flamed. Some on this group don't know how to take a joke or fix
serious problems.
The problem with the Spectrum repeaters is that the designer( not engineer

thinking about the spectrum that I have I found a simple solution to the Tx
problems that It has.
Here are some serious suggestions. 1 remove the exciter board and replace it
with the MASTRII exciter board. That'll fix that problem real fast. The only
thing that you need to do is arrange for the necessary +10 Volts to operate
it, even the least technical ham should be able to take care of that. As for
the controller the SCR1000 has a controler connector on the back for a
controller. All of the lines that you need should appear there if the 4000
also has the connector.

Are
you looking for 2 meters or 440?  You may want to look into a Johnson 530
or 559 depending on which band you want.  They are cheap at swap fests
and very dependable, I usually buy them for 5 to 15 dollars.  I have been
running one on each band for over five years and zero failures.  Don't get
me wrong, I feel there is not much better radio than a GE Master II, I have
several of them also but for ease of conversion and if high power is not needed
you can't beat the Johnson.

Actually, you need to make all these Spectrum bashers happy. Take a picture
of someone taking a sledgehammer to it and email the picture to Kevin so he
can post it on the Repeater Builder's website. Then whenever someone feels
the need, that URL can be posted and everyone will feel better.

Kevin,

Are
you looking for 2 meters or 440?  You may want to look into a Johnson 530
or 559 depending on which band you want.  They are cheap at swap fests
and very dependable, I usually buy them for 5 to 15 dollars.  I have been
running one on each band for over five years and zero failures.  Don't get
me wrong, I feel there is not much better radio than a GE Master II, I have
several of them also but for ease of conversion and if high power is not needed
you can't beat the Johnson.

Now you won't get an argument out of me on that one
VHF Hi and VHF low are pretty much $0 - $25, the mid split VHF low can't
even be given away, but we were originally talking about what I believe was a
UHF repeater.

the trimmer for the xtal as it could be affected by temperature.

Please don't flame me for trying to help him, i know how it can be when
you have nothing to put on the air.

Good luck,  If you check with some of your local Motorola shops, Micors are coming out of service regularly (if any are left, I know we had a few). Micors and MastrII's in their virgin forms can be had cheap or free in many cases. Even if you get a mobile style of either, it is good.

power supply, transmitter, receiver, controller. It should then

Good luck,  If you check with some of your local Motorola

had a few). Micors and MastrII's in their virgin forms can be had cheap or

Trace the audio and PTT lines and disconnect the internal controller.
Add your choice of connector(s) to the RX audio out, COR out and PL
decoder out leads and to the TX audio in and PTT leads. Then build
up your own interconnecting cable to go to an external controller.

Missing boards can be acquired, please state what was missing ...

And the PA is repairable, unless it's a lightning strike...

And if it's a high power model, and the final is toasted, you might
actually want to bypass the final and run it at the 40-45w level.

I like having every TX in a system have a unique ID. That way if someone
is hearing one of my TXs someplace it shouldn't be and they can catch
the ID it tells me which TX to look at.

I ID the repeaters as DE WA6ILQ / R1 and increment the number from there.
When the power fails and the systems revert to battery I drop the DE and add
EP to the end.

The links get ID'd as DE WA6ILQ / A1 (for aux).
The remote bases get ID'd by voice.

Can you scan the entire manual and send it to me? (If you don't have
a scanner then can you xerox it? I'll have it scanned locally)
Either way, I'll put it the scans up on www.repeater-builder.com

sell you a manual if you want though!". Thats great. Also, does
anyone know what mods are needed to run this unit with an outboard
controller, as the Spectrum one sucks. Any and all help is GREATLY

RE: [RE: [RE: [[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Help]]]

2004-01-06 Thread Kim Carr
I've watched this thread and can't resist contributing my experiences.

I supported a Spectrum SCR-1000 VHF repeater for my ham club for more
than 3 years. It never operated to our satisfaction. Key problems:

1. Transmitter spurs caused by leaky caps that overheated.
2. Poor power supply design - Darlington TO-3 pass transistor would fail
short circuit, placing 18V unregulated on the TX and RX.
3. Original receiver was obsoleted by Spectrum as it lacked adequate IF
selectivity. The new RX wasn't much better.
4. Receiver pre-selector had a higher noise figure than the front end of
the RX. The repeater actually heard better without the pre-selector.

We finally dumped it and got a GE 100w Master. After we learned to
improve cooling and run it at 80w rather than to reduce power in the PA,
it was clean and worked flawlessly.

My two cents...

Kevin, for that I applaud you!!! Just a few weeks ago we had a person
come
on this mail list, & ask about spectrum repeaters. He was told all the
horror stories from many different people about all their problems.
Then he
announced that he thinks he can make one work using better technical

[Repeater-Builder] CW ID info

2004-01-06 Thread Don
I just had a old rack mount data Signal CWID-70 Re programmed with My call
, They forgot to put /R But I will use My controller for That. I was
thinking of putting a 220 Link on My 440 repeater or a remote . Do I have
to ID That as /L Or can it just be My call ?

PS Data Signal is no longer in business , But they still had a former
employee working for the New Company called Game Country in Albany Ga ,
that I got it re programmed and a Manual from. so if anyone is still using
a Unit like this and needs info E-Mail and I will look in the Manual.

Thanks Don KA9QJG

Kevin - if you don't have any money to put up a repeater, then you shouldn't
be doing it in the first place. Repeaters are a HUGH money drain if you run
them in even lower quality.

PSSSTT- You'll spend a lot of money in parts and buying people coffee/food
to help you keep that spectrum running. They are crap.

2004-01-06 Thread Kevin Bednar
Unfortunately Joe, everything for this project is being donated for an
OEM/RACES project to improve county coverage, specifically because of the
lack of $$. I also wanted a Mastr II (got one donated but upon further
inspection was missing a board and the PA was toast.) or a Micor but
unfortunately no one was able to donate one. I myself would not want to go
the ebay route because I wouldn't want to screw someone else over with the
same POS problems I'm experiencing with it. Thanks.

Well, if you really have the 'anatomy' to do this: Sell it on eBay, take the

Personally, I wouldn't do that to someone else, but it is your choice.

Here is what I'd do:
(in the short term)

1.) Take the Spectrum exciter out and throw it away.
2.) This next step is optional:
Smash it with a hammer so you never have any thoughts of reinstalling
it.
3.) Install a used Hamtronics exciter in its place.
4.) Gut out the old control and power supply circuitry from the
Spectrum.
5.) Install a NHRC-4 controller.
6.) Hook it to a Astron RS-35A/M power supply.

(in the long term)
1.) Save some money.
2.) Throw everything except #5 and 6 away above.
3.) Build or buy a real repeater.

No I'm not joking.

I kinda figured that John from what I've been told, but unfortunately there
is $0 to replace it with something else. I didn't pay for it so that's why I

Here is what I'd do:
(in the short term)

1.) Take the Spectrum exciter out and throw it away.
2.) This next step is optional:
Smash it with a hammer so you never have any thoughts of reinstalling it.
3.) Install a used Hamtronics exciter in its place.
4.) Gut out the old control and power supply circuitry from the Spectrum.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Info needed - 220 duplexers

2004-01-06 Thread Jeff DePolo WN3A
It's been a while since I worked on one, but isn't there just a UHF
connector at the top end? If so, just add a double-male and a double-female
adapter in line to extend the length.

Note it's not a "stub", it's a piece of transmission line that is less than
1/4 wave in length, therefore it is a capacitor. The dielectric is slid in
and out to vary the dielectric constant between the center and shield, i.e.
it is a dielectric-tuned variable capacitor.

Call International Crystal (my personal pref), tell them what you want to
do. The nice lady on the other end will ask several questions... and give
you instructions.

If the radio will be in an un-controlled environment (or located somewhere
you wouldn't like to make many trips to re-tune the elements).. ask that
the elements be temperature compensated. I consider it a must for a
permanent installation.

As others have said.. "your mileage may vary"...

I have an Oregon Scientific wireless weather station, also on 433 mhz,
at the
50' level on my tower and I have never heard a peep out of it! I have a VHF
weak signal station and operating on 432mhz have never heard it. Our local
repeater uses 433mhz links and so far it has not heard it either, it is only
couple miles down the road from me, and with the weather station
transmitter at
the 50' level on my tower it would hear it if there was something there.
 I hear
mine at 433.95 and that's the only place I hear them.

I saw one guy told you about spurs all over the UHF band, that certainly
has not
been my experience here.

Try it, if it does put out all that crap, send it back!

Is it a Maxar, Mostar, or Maxtrac? No such thing as a Maxstar. In any
case, the Mostar and Maxtrac CANNOT be duplexed. They use one
synthesizer for tx and rx, and it can't generate both freqs at the same
time.
The Maxar COULD be duplexed I suppose (it's a crytal controlled radio),
but there is no shielding between the tx and rx circuitry, so internal
desense would be too great. Besides, what you want is a 2M receiver (I'm
assuming your repeater is 2M) and a UHF tx. If the radio you have is
UHF, it may be usable as the link tx. If it's VHF, it may be usable as
the remote receiver.

[Repeater-Builder] Satelite receivers

2004-01-06 Thread k9bf
Hi all
I am planning on adding a satelite receiver to my repeater system.
A friend has come up with a Motorola Maxstar radio that looks like it
may work at the remote site. Has anyone used this radio for this kind
of application? It will need to be modified to receive and transmit
at the same time. Also, at the main repeater site I would like a bank
of up to 8 recievers all in one box for recieving the remote
transmitters. Anyone have knowledge of such an item? The remote links
will all be on 440 Mhz.
Thanks
Ben K9BF

Later model 652's don't have notch stubs. This is a change that Wacom
made, not TXRX. Maybe they forgot to call and inform you of that!
The picture in this (WACOM) article depicts the newer 652's without the
stubs. I don't know how the notch adjustment is made with the newer
models; maybe with a variable capacitor?
http://www.repeater-builder.com/pdf/wp652.pdf

FYI: TXRX will likely never do anything to the WACOM cans. They aren't
building them and really aren't doing much to support them; IMHO.
Telewave seems to want to help out the loyal Wacom folks, at least
that's what their website says:
http://www.telewave.com/

The dielectric rods are likely the same for all 4 places, but there are
other differences that might be likely.

>DId you need the overall length of acrylic rod and outside conductor as
>well?

On the WP-641 the *inner* conductor is a different length between sides
even though the outer conductor is of the same length; I'd guess this to
be true for the 220 version as well. The inner conductor can be
measured by inserting a small tape measure into the notch stub with the
dielectric removed. The length of the inner conductor is what
determines the 'side' in which the deeper notch appears, and the
approximate frequency about the pass. The dielectric then tunes the
exact frequency in which the stub produces the notch about the pass. I
say "deeper" because a notch actually appears on BOTH sides of the
pass. More on this in this article:

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Battery terminal corrosion

2004-01-06 Thread Al Allum
Tim, I would agree with this approach, however, if the corrosion is not to
bad, try using emery cloth to clean up the post and wire end terminals.
Spray the items with WD-40. Re-assemble them and then use an aerosol
battery terminal spray or brush on a waterproof type grease being sure to
get under, on top and around everything.

These are not car type batteries. They have a bolt through terminal with a
lug for the wire connection.

ok this stament is not 100% true

I run a repeater with 60 watts output and I only run 4 Cans.
wth the 4 Sinclair cans I got over 90db of iso. and to boot if I really
wanted to get them tighter thay will do a 500 KC split to boot

so instead of going through the hassle of make'n your own cans ..
look for a sinclair hybrid duplexer .. you can find these units from
cheap to free ... and little work will get then where you need them

All I had to do it tune .. the rods and stubs and was bang on .

Good luck

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Easy VHF Duplexer !

2004-01-06 Thread Virden Clark Beckman
I think what you are trying to do is take the audio from one unit to
feed the other so that one is the reciever and the other the transmit,
what you need to do is open the rx unit and find the audio mute line
that feeds a lite and take this signal to make a carrier activated
switch. If you have no existing internal circuit or can't locate it you
would then use an op-amp circuit to detect the voltage and current swing
of the audio coming from the center of the volume adjustment
potentiometer feeding this into a switching transistor for the transmit
push-to-talk, this will also need to incorperate a timing circuit as
well as in identifier for the station itself. That is a controller, not
really a duplexor although it will allow the duplex function to perform
- the duplexing of the rf is an altogether different game in itself, for
this you will need a filter to block the transmitter output from
desensing or destroying the reciever and if you look at these filters
there is often an equal amount of filtering on the reciever as well.
With walky talky power typically around 5 watts this can be done with 4
cavities instead of the 6 or 7 needed for higher power, for the 600kc
ham vhf band split this each of these could be made from 3 3lb coffee
cans soldered together with 1/4 wave folded dipole antenas inside, save
one end and slide it in and out to tune for your frequency, use another
end to keep the insects from getting inside - if you measure from the
protruding element of one can to the next the connecting cable has to be
an electrical 1/4 wave - the coax velocity factor will be used in the
math equation to build this, 2 cans will be used for each rx and tx this
allows one side to operate without affecting the other, if you can get
this to work well you may be able to use just one antenna but you will
probably have to use 2 until you tune each side independantly. The only
place for a relay might be to control push-to-talk of the transmit radio
based on the control line taken from the reciever radio, visit
repeater-builder dot com for more detailed info, you will be able to see
pictures of what you are trying to make.

[Repeater-Builder] Easy VHF Duplexer !

2004-01-06 Thread focomirzet

hi to everybody,

i need some help with the following:

I,m trying to build a home desktop repeater with two VHF hand held
radios. I've heard that some people posses schematics to build
duplexer switchboard between two radios mentioned above. That should
be electronic duplexer with relays or something similar to that, so
therefore i politely ask anybody who has either schematics or online
links related to this matter, to send me on this e-mail.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
P.S

THE reason for my quiery is that I'm living in country with weak
economy, so please understand that my resources are very limited and
this is the only way for me to obtain some useful info.
Do note that I have the knowledge and strong will needed to do the
task at all costs.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Battery terminal corrosion

2004-01-06 Thread bradley glen
Hi
I clean the terminals by using some coke and allow
them to settle.Clean away then my brass wire brush
fitting on the end of my drill ro really get the
terminals clean . I have several fittings so one of
them is only used on the cable terminator and pack
with a grease as mentioned already.
NOTE :Always check for signs of corrosion on the crimp
joins where the clamp goes onto the batterry-if
discoloured rather cut backa little.
