[Repeater-Builder] Re: Dayton Hamfest Notes
This was my first year at Dayton and I had a blast. Even with the rain. I came ready for the rain, so it wasn't a big deal. I am ready to go back again next year. I do have to make a comment to MDM though, I was looking at some stuff they had, but I wanted to walk the rest of the flea market before I actually bought, well, by the time I made it through everything, I was worn out and on Saturday I headed right back to MDM's booth, to find them gone. Most of my purchases were done on Saturday and Sunday, so Ted, I think you blew it by leaving early. It was great meeting everyone and I look forward to next year. Even with the flight delays, I didn't miss any of the Hamvention. Sorry Neil, Hamcation is held the second weekend mostly around February 14 th. in Orlando, Florida. Tons of great Hotel rooms, and it's really near the local BIG Three Theme Parks, Walt Disney World, Universal, and Sea World, as well as several smaller ones near by Including NASAs family attraction. There is a lot of fun for you at Hamcation and your families at the parks or hanging around the pools. If you like the beach, they are really nice beaches as close as 30 to 45 minutes away. Attend and have fun. Oh, did I say the weather is quite nice that time of the year. 73 AC0Y --- In Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com, Neil McKie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ok, where is that? It works fantastic - good audio, plenty of RF - 110 watt Delta running at 60 watts. The helical front end seems to work well as there is a 1/4 kW fire department paging transmitter on an adjacent tower about 500 yrds away. I have heard that the Delta receiver is very similar to the Mastr III station rx. We have a BpBr duplexer in place and there doesn't seem to be any problem with desense with the 600 kc split. I would imagine that with the 5 mHz split on UHF it would work real well. I wired the two control head cables into one control head by connecting the BCD lines to both radios, the receive audio, speaker, COR lines into the RX radio and the mic and PTT lines into the Tx radio. There is information on one of the packet sites that tells you how to run the radio with no control head. If you do that you will need to put your channel info into ch. 16 because the Delta selects the channels by grounding various combinations of the 4 BCD lines. Ch. 16 is selected when none of the BCD lines are grounded. It works so well that the work on the Micor has become a back-burner issue. I did read somewhere that if you turn the power on the Delta too much it will go crazy and put out a bunch of spurs, so keep that in mind. If you need any details drop me a note. 73 Robert Yahoo! Hello, Great post, I was there and learned a lot, mostly next year I need a covered tent to be able to sell stuff even if it rains! One other thing, there needs to be a Dayton Hamvention email message board where there side and our side can talk about problems and compliments and things like that. All in all I had a good first time at Dayton this year and plan on returning next year with more Junque (high class junk) to sell. I always receive a soda, a bag of pretzels and the latest third world sent cold. Those of us from the West Coast flew in to Chicago to find all flights cancelled from Wx. Many of us not wanting to spend the night in Houstin or Chicago rented cars and drove the remaining 6 hours (less the Chicago Loop traffic). Oh Joy what fun... All things considered, Indiana's highways are in great shape. Friday was great, the classic Dayton friday. Truck loads of boat anchors going both directions. Lot's of deals of the day going on. Sat brought the rain on, a semi light rain for much of the day just meant you bought one of the $1 plasic ponchos to do your wandering. A modest number of the vendors left, a larger percentage staying through Sunday. Most people just go inside to see the booths and various displays while the light rain passed through. Sunday was just great, both the weather and the people were in fine form! Everyone who stayed, had a great time closing last minute boat anchor purchases. Sunday appeared to be magic window for the Dayton flea market people. Things wrapped up and off everyone went, most tired with smiles on their faces. Sorry to read that some of you left early Saturday. I know one vendor who did, only to return Sunday and was very glad he did, selling most of his items upon his Sunday return. Here's a Dayton Sidebar: The Dayton Club DARA actully ran the Hamvention this year. Previous years were done by a contractor with less than optimal results. Some of you know the entire story, which I'll not mention the details. Dara retaking control of the Hamvention from the previous contractor is a very good thing. So the Dayton Club took-back the Hamvention and ran it with mostly volunteers. The previous years contact and Hamvention information was not really provided to the Dara People by the previous contractor, so much of the quirkyness arose from the mentioned missing information. All things considered, the Dara People tried very hard to make the Hamvention appear seamless, with the exception of being more flexible and polite. I hope most of you expereienced Dara's efforts to make the Hamvention play as best possible. Next year will find Dara really trying hard to make the Hamvention the best possible. For those of you counting, the un official reported numbers are just under 22,000 people this year. Not bad eh..? If you have any comments, feedback suggestions good or bad... I'll try to pass them back to the Dara Group through my contact as I see them. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: 2 Delta S's as a UHF repeater
You can use an S or SX for the transmitter, but the receiver definitely needs to be the S. The helicals in the S make the difference. I think the S has about 2-3 MHz of bandwidth on receive, while the SX has close to 20 MHz. I have also used GE Phoenix S UHF radios for a repeater as well. Picked up a couple of narrowband units a while ago for $10 each. As longs as I keep the power down, seems to work pretty well. Any other questions, feel free to ask. RE: [Repeater-Builder] ts-64 and a micor repeater station
Sure it's easy to do, you can get Disc. Audio to run the decode right off the backplane and transmit can be input thru the backplane also to the PL input of the exciter. You should have both manuals for the station so you can find all the points. You need the RF manual and the Control manual. I'd tell you the exact points but without the manuals you can't be sure everything is proper as sometimes if it was a Carrier Squelch station, the PL input path to the exciter may not be complete. RE: [[Repeater-Builder] Dayton Hamfest Notes]
Dayton was Dayton. Fine on Friday, Wet on Saturday, and Deals to be found on Sunday. Three of us drove from Colorado Springs. It's a 20 hour drive (we do it in 2 days, getting a little old for the straight through shot). And no, the road to the top of Pikes Peak isn't open yet. It was great to see everyone again and make new friends. We are getting into 902MHz now and it was good to find some equipment and information in doing that. We are looking forward to next year's adventure, and hopefully, better weather. With the recent snow in the Denver area, I'm sure the Pike's Peak road wasn't open to the top again either. Looks like the weather was pretty much the same as last year, though I remember it being a bit cool as well. With rain 2 years in a row, maybe next year will be a dry one? I believe the question was actually: Is RG-142 also good to use in VHF duplexing systems? rather than is it too good? Re: [Repeater-Builder] rg142 duplexer jumpers
RG-142 is excellent, but it's stiff because it has a silver-over-steel core. Read the web page at http://www.repeater-builder.com/rbtip/double-shielded-coax.html and you will find out why I switched from RG-142 to RG-400. Re: [Repeater-Builder] rg142 duplexer jumpers
It will work. I most of the time use Belden RG-214/U coax to interconect the cans to the repeater. A bit less loss and very eazy to work with at VHF and UHF. Good luck on your new repeater system. First of all, the price isn't that big... a mobile can provide the boards, and reeds can be found for $5 each... Just make sure that you have the right pin count on the boards - there were two versions of the PL boards and I think it was 5 pins and 7 pins, but it's been a while... With that said, RX disc audio for the decoder is available on the lower left receiver points on the backplane and the PL input to the exciter is available on the upper right row of pins. Part of the standard mod is to add a jumper so that the local speaker amp can monitor the RX. I personally add a rotary switch into that jumper wiring so that I can monitor the RX, the TX audio, and a few more audio points (for example remote base RX and TX audio). If you have an Scom 7K or a similar controller with a PL encoder audio gate you might want to consider routing your new PL encoder through the audio gate as you install it. If you need to switch the PL encode with the COS it can be done at any point in the future with a simple program command. You'll find most of what you need on the web pages linked off of http://www.repeater-builder.com/rbtip/micor-index.html You WILL need both manuals for the station so you can find all the points. You need the RF manual and the Control manual. Note that there were two series of backplanes, one for the regular and the other for the community repeater stations, and the control manuals are different. An outside controller can be added to either one, but it helps to have the right manual. Note that if the chassis was built as a carrier squelch station that you may have to add a few internal jumpers. Mike WA6ILQ Yahoo!
