Re: [Repeater-Builder] Sinclair Q-202G

2004-12-18 Thread Matt

Hi Kevin,

Just a quick question regarding your earlier email - I thought crystal
oscillators were cleaner (as far as noise sidebands are concerned ) than PLL
types.

Is this not the case in the GE Mastr II you mention below, as you indicate
the PLL type of exciter is better? Is this particular to this design?

Don't get me wrong here Kevin- I'm not trying to poke holes in what you are
suggesting, I just thought xtals would be cleaner?

Great info about the duplexers though.

Matt

Right, considering they may be fairly far from the destination
frequency. It's accepted that a move of 3% or less of where the factory
built them is okay without cable replacement, more than that, its
usually a necessity.

At 600 kHz, you will see a typical notch depth of between 85 and 92 dB
depending on how good the harness matches. The *sides* of this duplexer
seem to interact more so than others I have tuned, so, you need to make
sure both sides are fairly close in tuning before spending time making
them perfect. Here is a document that will help you tune and understand
them:

We have Micor repeaters on the 4 installations I spoke of earlier. Most
are running solid state 110 watt PA's running full power and the
receivers include the Micor helical resonator preamp that gives 12 dB
sinad sensitivity at -122 dBm (.2 uV) or slightly better. These
repeaters have no desense, but likely have very little reserve isolation
as well. One thing that can be done to add more reserve isolation is to
use better than average equipment. If you have a GE Mastr II two meter
or highband repeater that has inadequate duplexer isolation, change out
the exciter to a PLL type and take advantage of the 20+ dB less
transmitter side-band noise. Another thing is to consider using a tube
type PA deck, like the GE 4EF5A1, with a typical 'multiplier' exciter.
This could allow power levels in excess of 200 watts or more without
suffering from inadequate transmitter side-band noise suppression.

I may be able to help, but it will take a day or two...

While I make a couple of phone calls, Venkat what
frequencies do you need?

Maybe someone on this group has them in their box of
elements left over from their amateur radio conversions.

Of maybe someone has a leftover set of UHF commercial
elements with good crystals that are near his frequency and
can send them to Venkat.
His supplier could take those crystals, plug them into a test
circuit and determine the parameters by what loading is
needed to pull the test crystals onto the indicated frequency.

And I believe they have a $100 minimum order. Kind of steep for a chunk of
coax with an RCA connector attached to it.

You can get the "short center pin" RCA plugs with Teflon insulation from the
RF Connection. He also sells all sorts of other connectors. Last time I
spoke with him, he said that he only carries the high-quality connectors
these days.

Hi Eric and others

Question...I have the same duplexer and was thinking of adding a
couple of bandpass filters as well. Does the 14" cable length apply
to the added on cavities as well? And should they be installed
between the antenna port and first RX cavity or between the last RX
cavity and receiver or does it matter? I know the cabling for this
duplexer is kinda funky so I'm wondering just where in the cabling
scheme of things any add on filters should be added and their cable
lengths.

I have a DB Products 4 can bandpass duplexer 150/160 mHz or so
that's just sitting around doing nothing and I figured I'd put some
of the cans to some use. The model is a DB 4044 but I don't know if
the rods are long enough to tune to 146.775/.175 mHz (my 2 meter
frequency)...never tried to tune it down low. Its currently on
152.915/159.900.

If they can be used, should the add on cans be tuned independently
and then the whole shebang re-tuned? All I have is a couple of
simple service monitors with no spectrum analyzers or network
analyzers...would I be able to get "close enough for government
work" do you suppose? I'm not sure that there are any "qualified
filter tuners" in my area (piedmont of NC).

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Mathew,

just get the cables from a GE base. It will most likely have an so239 on it
and replace it. I would not worry about using the RCA plug. GE had them on
mastrII's for years. I will look to see if I can scrounge a spare cable.

I think the point was mistaken here. I either have to change the connector
on the receiver so that the cable goes directly to the receiver without
using any connetors to change from one type of plug to another, or find a
special cable with an RCA on one end and a Type N Male on the other. My
objective is to never visit the repeater site once this machine is done.
And if I have to, I don't want it to be becuase I used a cheap connector to
tie in the reciever. The receiver is the GE MASTR ER41. I'd rather just
change the connector to a type N connector, but would have to widdle a
little on the internal copper casing to put it in place. Question: If I
install the type N connector, and there is a solder point behind the inside,
am I going to run into troubles. I hate to cut into it to find that I'm
opening a can or worms for noise to get in?

Try http://www.westcrystal.com/

Call them, give them the part number of the channel element, the
operating frequency and a credit card number. Obscenely inexpensive
(Crystals for my 2ppm MASTR2 ICOMs were about US$15 each shipped).

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Source for custom made cables

2004-12-18 Thread Joe

I don't know if you are really going to have a big problem with the MASTR
RCA connector. I would make the cable up myself, RCA plugs are not that
hard to put on. I use the MASTR ER41 receiver on my packet digi and have
not had any problems with the receiver connector. If I really wanted to
change it, I would use an SMA connector because it is small. Second choice
might be a BNC, but I have found BNC connectors to get noisy after time. I
had a home brew 220Mhz duplexer that used BNC connectors. I had to take the
connectors off and on a few times a year to keep the noise down.

[Repeater-Builder] Mitrek

2004-12-18 Thread krmvsjr

Can anyone tell me details of crystal specifications for UHF mitrek.
I am getting a T44JJA390DK and would like to replace the crystals for
local frequencies. I would like to get confirmation that the
crystals are 3rd overtone crystals - series resonant - 32pf capacity -
(freq =10.7 / 9 for RX) I do not know the freq multiplication for TX
crystal. There is a local crystal manufacturer who can supply
xrystals if the operating parameters are specified. Can anywho has a
the service manual make me a copy ? Venkat VU2KV

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Source for custom made cables

2004-12-18 Thread Dave

I'm not entirely tongue in cheek when I ask whether you should be in
charge of a repeater or installing one if you have not got the expertise to
cut a bit of coax and fit a plug or socket. And if the spare 20 minutes is
to much for some then that would explain the funny noises I often hear on
two meters whilst traveling around.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Sinclair Q-202G

2004-12-18 Thread Eric Lemmon

Paul,

I have tuned three Q-202G duplexers in the past six months, and all
wound up with nearly identical performance. The only difference between
a Q-202G duplexer for the 2m band and one for the 150-174 MHz band is
the length of the jumper cables. The factory-made harness for the
commercial band measures 12" between the cavities and between the inside
cavities and the antenna tee connector. The 2m harness measures 14" for
these four sections. The measurements are between the centers of each
tee connector. The physical size of the cans and the coupling loops are
the same for both splits.

Using a network analyzer and great care to match the return loss between
cavities, I was able to achieve at least 86 dB of isolation at 1.5 dB
insertion loss. This is barely adequate for a solid-state 35W repeater
that has 0.35 uV sensitivity at 12 dB SINAD. If you're willing to
accept some impairment due to desense, you can run more power-
especially if you have a tube PA. A 100W repeater normally requires 100
dB of isolation for zero desense, and that usually calls for six
cavities. However, I have used a Q-202G duplexer with two added
bandpass cavities on the receive side, and it had zero desense with a
100W PA.

The fingerprinting software is more to tell which
radio is abusing a sysem, and which is not. It is not
really designed to ID a particular make and model of a
radio, although it could if enough data were available
for comparison. It is more similiar to ballistics
matching than fingerprinting, in that there are a lot
of variables that can change slightly.

As to the question, this almost seems like there is
something "different" between a part 90 radio and a
part 95 radio. Since the certification specs are the
same, there is really nothing that a person can look
at (over the air) to say whether a radio is a part 90
or a part 95 designated radio. A part 90 radio will
meet all part 95 specs, assuming power is kept below
50 watts. The only difference is that "95" is entered
on the application for certification.

Has anyone had luck using the Q-202G duplexers in the 145-148 range? What
needs to be done with them for use in the ham band? Just different cables?
What sort of isolation figure is possible? Thanks.

Hello Mark,The answer is yes they work very well on
both two meter (Kenwood TKR-750)and wonderful on 440 (Kenwood TKR-850)
they just came out with a ver. twofor the 850 and it does a few more
things. Contact me direct and I will passalong who I buy Kenwood repeaters
from and they sell them tuned to the Hambands. Oh! The old software that
worked the Kenwood TKR-850 will not work onthe ver. two you need the
KPG-91D or better to program this newer repeater.73 Russ, W3CH([EMAIL PROTECTED])- Original
