Do you know exactly when this happened? We have similar interference
here in SoCal, but one particularly annoying source that seemed to
center around 449.0 to 449.5 suddenly disappeared about a month ago.
The reason it was so annoying was that even though it was only in the
repeater output portion of the band for us, the amount of time the
signal was present in a NBFM RX was long enough to pulse the carrier
squelch open (it sounded like a fast chirp every few seconds when
listening with a SSB RX).

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Mobile Duplexers

2005-01-15 Thread Mark Holman

I cannot recall the Bands used for Public Saftey Freq.s when they used what
was called Mobile Extenders, but I believe that they used 2 different bands
in Michigan something like VHF Hi to VHF Lo . I was wondering if you were
( being more expense of course for the Volunteer ) using a VHF - UHF type of
a repeater say VHF in UHF out or UHF in VHF out ?

it may eliminate problems in can detuning from mobile vibration from what
Jim B. is saying here.

No. Can't be done. To get the isolation you need for the 600Khz split on
the 2M ham band, the cavities must be much larger, too large to be
called 'mobile'. Plus the tuning adjustment will be touchy enough that
the bouncing around will de-tune it.
Portable repeaters for the 2M ham band don't work well. Getting rid of
the desense takes some doing. It's not imposssible, but it ain't easy.

[Repeater-Builder] Extender splits

2005-01-15 Thread skipp025

What we have in California, besides crazy
drivers and traffic...

The most common mobile extenders are on
VHF, duplex versions run a non standard
split about 5 Mhz wide. Power levels run
from milli watts on up. Pyramid now makes
them, GE PSS Inc. used to make them.

Medical extenders are most often UHF and
relative low power (10 watts).

The CHP use a simplex extender, which sort
of acts/operates like a simplex auto patch.
It works pretty well, there is a scheme to
stack repeater extender priorities when
multiple units arrive on a scene.

One legacy PS System (now out of service) I
serviced used cross band, Tx on low band,
46Mhz, Rx on 153 Mhz high-band. It worked
very well. If Motorola would have kept making
the special order micor extender radios, they'd
probably still be on it.

cheers,

[Repeater-Builder] MSF 5000 key up delay problem

2005-01-15 Thread T.J.

I'm looking to see if any one on the list that runs an MSF 5000 has experienced this problem. When I key up this VHF MSF and start counting, the repeater doesn't key up and start retransmitting untill I get to four. So there is about a good two second delay to repeater key up. When I hook up the test set the receive audio comes out the local speaker with no delay. The repeater keys up instantly with the local PTT switch. If the repeater is still keyed up during the hang time and you key back up again the audio comes through with no delay. As soon as you let the hang time expire it takes two full seconds of an incoming signal to get it to key up again. I've gone through all the delay setting in the RSS and set them to zero. I also tried setting everything back to default, and neither of these actions made any difference. If anyone has any ideas on what this could be I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks, T.J.

  no6b wrote:
I'd like to see the specs on what you've come up with.

A key advantage of the 2.5 MHz split that I use is that at that
spacing the G.E. RX front end has significant rejection: over 40 dB at
the TX freq., so it can work with as little at 40 dB of duplexer
rejection at the TX freq.

40 dB of rejection of the transmitter power may be enough to make it
duplex, but I doubt 40 dB would be enough rejection of the transmitter
sideband noise number.

A 5 watt signal is +37 dBm. *Typical* transmitter sideband noise with
a good radio set is likely -90 to -100 dB below the carrier at 2.5 mHz
spacing. Many receivers intended for repeater service will hear a
signal at -125 dBm. +37 minus 90 is negative 53 dBm. Now take -125 and
subtract -53, and the duplexer will have to provide 62 to 72 dB of
isolation. Now, use a PLL exciter and your right at that -40 number
for both.

Interesting information Skipp.

[Warning: If you're reading this and you're not on Repeater-Builder, I BCC'd
you on this message because you're probably interested in this information
here in Colorado -- if you feel like replying publically you can. You've
been warned! ;-) ]

Denver has been very quiet this week and part of last week also, I think...
knock on wood. Weak-signal users on one of the hardest hit repeaters in the
Denver Metro area are once again copyable.

I haven't checked to see if we can still hear Buckley AFB's system on any
portion of the band yet directly here, I just noticed the input to that one
hammered repeater went quiet and come to think of it probably two repeaters I
know for sure were touched by the signal are in much better shape. I also
haven't checked the weak-signal portion of the band.

Perhaps *someone* finally got through to folks who could tweak the
configuration a bit and reduce the impact to repeater inputs.

If that *someone* is reading along, and there really have been some quiet
changes made, I'll pre-emptively say THANK YOU from Colorado!

I know from off-list communications that a number of good folks who work for
the right places were interested and discussing the situation -- what I
can't say (and maybe never will) with any certainty is if one of those people
was in the right place at the right time to help the hams out.

I can also say with certainty that the public response from the ARRL was
dismal, at best. Again, knowing that things sometimes happen behind closed
doors I don't want to offend any ARRL person who helped with this, but the
information I received back in private via second-hand communication was
absolutely disheartening. At the very least our national group has done a
pretty horrible job of getting the news out about this. But... again,
knowing that they might have had to play some politics... I'm not here to
place blame. (Heck, it's the Internet -- 20 or 30 other people will do that
for me!)

What's really interesting is that you guys are upside-down from us there in
your part of California, aren't you? We're low-in/high-out on UHF here.

That would mean they had to either lower output drastically in the entire band
or they were given good instructions from someone clueful who explained how
to avoid the repeater inputs.

I heard also privately that the Camp Pendleton system is absolutely horrid --
no point in even attempting to use a UHF radio near them when they have a
large training exercise going.

Would be interesting to hear from that area again and see how they're doing
now... (hint. hint. GRIN.)

Keep your fingers crossed! We're still secondary, but it's awfully nice of
Uncle Sam to shuffle things around a bit in their configuration, if that's
what's happened to create the sudden quiet.

One possible cause of that behavior would be if your station was ever
set up for use with a Motorola Spectra-TAC voting system. In such
systems the normal repeat audio path is through the voting comparator
and back to the station through the wire-line.

A station that is set up for Spectra-TAC and is also set up as a
repeater has a mode called in-cabinet repeat. Basically what
happens is that when the receiver unsquelches, the controller expects
to receive a line key command from the voting comparator. If that
never comes - the station will eventually key up and repeat
in-cabinet. That would exactly account for what you are seeing.

If your station does have Spectra-TAC enabled, it would be preferable
for you to load a conventional non Spectra-TAC codeplug, however you
could go to the Edit Advanced Information page three and try setting
the S-Tac Clear Repeater Delay parameter to zero.

You can tell if your station has Spectra-TAC enabled by going to the
F8 Station Model / Options screen in F4 Change / View.
