Re: [Repeater-Builder] TM-241A audio to external tone decoder

2005-08-08 Thread Paul Kelley
Yes, I know Mark. I don't need it to transmit, just monitor
a frequency and only for a few weeks. Fortunately I'm at a
really quiet site so the receiver doesn't get crunched.
Getting tone decode to work reasonably well was cured by
using speaker audio... guess this is one of those typical
ham rigs that doesn't filter out the tones from the RX
audio. Come to think of it I had noticed while using it at
home that I could hear tones from some people sneaking
through that RX.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Adding a Radio to a Repeater Antenna

2005-08-08 Thread Eric Meth
Laryn.
The best way to do it is to install a multicoupler, tuned to your
simplex frequency 446.925 between the duplexer and the antenna. The
multicoupler has a frequency seperation of at least 1 MHz so it will
not interfere with the 452/458 MHz frequencies. Insertion loss on 446
will be approximately 3 db. The following is a line drawing attempt:

Duplexer - multicoupler - Antenna
  | | |
452tx 458rx446.925 tr

A Sinclair multicoupler model C3037 could cost (used) about $300-
400USD, has type N female connectors on all 3 ports. The ports are
Antenna In, Feedthrough out, equipment in/out. Specifications can be
found at:
http://www.sinctech.com/catalog/resources/pdf/C3037-DI.pdf
That will do the job properly and should not affect the commercial
system. It also assumes the commercial antenna works at 446 MHz as
well.

That audio is after the high-pass filtering that specifically filters
out CTCSS. The easiest thing to find would be to go to the high side of
the volume control pot (not the wiper), and see how that works. It's
most likely raw discriminator audio.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: tx combiner follow up...

2005-08-08 Thread vintageaudio2004
Hi Skipp,

Thanks for your reply. At the moment we had to return to Caracas and
left the system operating with just one traffic channel, plus the
control channel. The customer said that at the moment usage will be
very light, and only a single user group will be active. So not much
operational impact for the moment, and since the system coverage is
much more than the customer anticipated, at least in that respect they
are very happy.

We are planning to return in 2-3 weeks time, which we already had to
do in order to bring the tower ground system up to snuff, as the
present one is not so good. This tower was formerly in use by the
cellular company, but has not been used for a few years now, and was
basically abandoned by them. Since it is located inside our customer's
property he indicated that he wanted us to use it, if viable.
Preliminary observations indicated that the structure is in good
shape, only the grounding system requires attention.

Now that I've had some time to go through in my mind all the tests
that we've done and the many good suggestions and information
received, I've come up with a few possible strategies which I wanted
to present to the persons that where kind enough to lend their help,
so as to get some more opinions on which would be the most viable path
to follow for a solution. In the next few hours I am going to compose
a message that I will post on the group, so other readers can also
benefit from whatever solution comes up, and also email a copy to
other persons that are contributing towards hopefully finding the most
appropriate solution. So far I am quite confident that the IM products
are being generated in the RX path, probably even right in each
receiver, but I will elaborate on my conclusions a bit later when I
post said message.

Thanks again for all your help. It is always very comforting to have
knowledgeable people lend a hand in these cases where one is stranded
in the middle of nowhere, and with this kind of problems.

Also many thanks to everyone else that chipped in with suggestions and
information. Be assured that I've read your messages and I will try to
get back to all of you individually and reply to your postings -in the
next few hours as time permits. I just don't wanted to send you a
quick reply, but rather answer every posting in depth.

Catch you all later. What a great group.

[Repeater-Builder] Decibel Dipole "stiffeners" mod

2005-08-08 Thread skipp025
John B. and I have been having a quick chat in regards
to the Decibel DB-224 antennas. John mentions something
interesting I thought would be worth posting back to
the group.

" we have found that to make these exposed element
antennas last more than a year or two around here, I
have taken to making "stiffeners" that I usually put
about half-way-up and half-way-down each of the loops
from the mast connection points."

Which is a great idea I never thought much about before
today. While we don't have the weather extremes in California
it would be nice to extend an antennas lifespan where possible.
A few years ago we had a large bird of prey fly into one
antenna and actually snap off a dipole element. We found the
bird and the element near the base of the tower. Not to mention
birds do land on the tower and antennas.

"I'll see if I can photo one, or do a really good sketch
of these thingies that others might find useful. (Last
year I replaced the 16/76 antenna atop Terry Peak -
see attached photo - as the wind had bent the bottom
mast section. Unfortunately the angle from which the
photo was taken doesn't really show how much the
bottom mast section - the reinforced part - was
bent. This same wind seems to cause the loops to
vibrate, and then breaks the Heli-arc'd joints. We
also use stainless steel screw-type hose clamps to
tie the harness to the mast for the same reason.
Ah,- life at 7,200 ft in the Black Hills!)
Great job, and thanks again!
73 de John WB6GHA"

You'd have to use a material with a low D-Factor, but a
hard type dipole reinforcement is a pretty good idea.
The Bluewave Company at the Las Vegas IWCE Convention
has extreme weather antennas on display. I really like
the rugged construction but the cost is at least double
the Decibel & Sinclair equivalent.

I'll keep the California earthquakes... you guys can keep
the snow and hurricanes.

Cheers,

Yes, the dipoles are dimensioned out. I also have
some higher range antennas I would like to move down
in frequency.

As you'll see in the drawings, the dipole element
lengths change with the band segment. You would need
to add length to the dipoles before you even mess with
the coax harness. Notations for the harnesses are
made, but I didn't really want to get into too much
detail with lengths... just making notes on the dB
coax part numbers and a basic picture.

Hi Skipp,

Yes we had purchased the Intermodulation Products Module plus the
Terrain Analysis Package +etc's, from Softwright (softwright.com) and
where planning to do so, but never got to it since both Sinclair and
Telewave ran their IM tests independently and confirmed that no
problems where evident with the proposed frequency plan. Unfortunately
our intentions of running our own analysis got buried beneath a very
hectic preparation period prior to leaving for the installation of the
system. You see, the site is a 2-day travel distance away by car, and
there where a lot of things to plan, and not much time to do it.

Still another member of this group was nice enough to run his own
analysis and posted the results here:

Greetings all,

I need two air variable capacitors for our DB4060 cans. I contacted the

parts... but if they did, the price would be $41 each for the caps!

The caps are Johanson 5602 (www.johansonmfg.com) 1 - 30 pf air variables. I
requested a quote from Arizona Components Company and one other place, but
expect the get the 'we don't sell in small quantity' response. Google
hasn't been much help either.

Does anybody have a couple of these in your pocket or know where I can get
my hands on a couple of them. What about ideas for suitable subs?

EF Johnson PC board variables also work well. You can
also use coax or a plastic rod for similar results

If Surplus Sales doesn't work out and since you have a Johanson part number,
I suggest that you call Johanson and ask for RF Sales-then plead your
case for a couple of samples which they will probably send to you for
nothing.

The caps are Johanson 5602 (www.johansonmfg.com) 1 - 30 pf air variables. I
requested a quote from Arizona Components Company and one other place, but
expect the get the 'we don't sell in small quantity' response. Google

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Air Variable Capacitors for DB4060

2005-08-08 Thread Burt Lang
The Johanson 30 pf trimmer is very rare in surplus but the 10 pf
trimmers are very common and cheap (as little as 50c-$1 each) in
surplus. I have bought a few hundred over the years, mostly at
fleamarkets. I have used 3 10pf trimmers in parallel to replace the 30
pf trimmers in Sinclair cans. Depending on the mounting arrangement
that may also work with the DB cans. Also the 10pf unit has a much
higher Q than the 30pf trimmer and paralleling them MAY give a higher Q
than the single 30pf unit. From experience it is certainly no worse.

Richardson Electronics also sell Johanson but their minimum qty is 100
pces. Electrosonic in Toronto used to distribute them but no longer
have the account. The single unit price for the 5602 should be in the
$15 range.

Don't be tempted to use trimmers that have a sliding or rotating
connection to the rotor such as the Johnson air trimmers. I tried that
one time and the rf currant thru the joint caused noise and instability
reflected back to the transmitter. The Johanson trimmer uses a bellows
connection from the moveable element to ground that is a solid but
flexable connection.

Just some hints from years of modifying and making cans in my shop.
