[Repeater-Builder] Fw: Motorola MSF5000

2008-04-03 Thread Jack Davis

I looked up the numbers for the PURC / MSF 5000 switches and they are:

90 degree C&K Part Number 7107MD9AV2BE Digi Key CKN1174-ND $7.20 ea

Straight C&K Part Number 7101SD9V3BE Digi Key CKN1043-ND $6.80 ea

The switches are NLA from Motorola, but Digi Key has the right one except it
has a shorter bat handle. It works fine and fits the mounting holes on PC
board exactly. The hardest part is getting the front panel off the tray
without breaking any of plastic tabs that hold it on. If I was at work I
could give you the part number, they are made by C&K electronics and I lost 2
of them in the last 6 weeks. Must be age related?

Thanks to everyone for their help. I opened everything up today... The VCOs
were locked- so I unlocked them. I did find the problem. The accessory
disable/reset switch seems to be malfunctioning. There are no longer 3
positions
on the switch. It stays in acc disable- I can "hold" the switch in the middle
and the repeater works great! Any ideas?

[Repeater-Builder] FW: VSWR Issues

2007-05-28 Thread Mike Besemer (WM4B)

Subject: VSWR Issues

Greetings all,

My club repeater system consists of a KRP-5000 feeding (what we think is) a
DB-224 mounted on a watertower at about 140'. The feedline is about 170
feet of one-inch helix. We'd been getting some comments from users about
decreased coverage, but had attributed most of them to the heavy foliage
we're seeing now (we have the same issue every spring), but nonetheless last
night the two of us on the technical committee went to the site to do some
checking. (As a sidebar, my background is 24 years USAF as an avionics tech
and my buddy works as a radio/radar tech for the FAA.)

At the site, a quick power check revealed the problem. 9 watts forward, 3
watts back (checked from both sides of the cans). The transmitter output
should be 30 watts. Checked the transmitter into a Comm Systems Analyzer
and verified 8.6 watts from the transmitter. So. we know that the
transmitter is toasted, no doubt from excessive reflected power.

The next step was to put a TDR on the line. Everything appeared to be okay
up to the antenna, but the termination point (antenna) looked pretty ragged.
What does a DB-224 (or similar) antenna look like on a TDR? (We tried to
print the TDR image so I could share it, but the printer was not
cooperating.)

I need to add that we DO NOT have access to the water tower. Previous club
leadership pulled some fast ones on the county and we are forbidden from
climbing the tower. Whatever needs to be done, we must use the same crew
the county uses and pay all costs. Also, we're the only ones on the tower,
so there is no routine maintenance done on the tower that we can piggy-back
on. Bottom line. we need to figure out what we need to do and have
everything in place if we need to hire a crew to come out and do the work
for us.

If I had access to the tower, I'd terminate the top of the hardline with a
50 ohm load and recheck the reflected power to verify that the feedline is
good. I'd also check power at the top to see how much loss we had. (The
antenna has been up there for more years than anyone can remember. we
believe that the last time it was inspected was 1994.) The hardline itself
looks very good, and we inspected the antenna as best we could from
ground-level with a sighting scope and could not see anything obviously
mucked up.

I'm guessing that the feedline is okay but that the antenna is going to need
either overhauled or replaced. and since we're going to have to pay for the
rigging crew, replacing the antenna would probably be the cheapest route.

Thoughts, suggestions? Did we miss anything obvious? Suggestions for a new
antenna that will last as long as this one did? I hate to go to the
membership with a 'we think this is what is wrong and we need to spend
money', but without access to the tower we're pretty much hamstrung.
Anybody got a TDR image of a DB-224 (or similar) that we can use for
comparison?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

WM4B

Supposedly, the benefit to DTV is that it requires a tight filter mask,

Supposedly, the benefit to DTV is that it requires a tight filter mask,
so out of band interference should be minimized.

But you still have intermod and mix between carriers,
and the DTV signal looks like a solid block on the
spectrum analyzer.

And it gets worse if you have multiple transmitters.
For an example of a worst-case scenario, lets
look at the Los Angeles marketplace (i.e. the
stations I can see from my location using a
good antenna) after the switchover:
The three columns are callsign, old channel
and new channel

KABC 7 7
KCAL 9 9
KTTV 11 11
KCOP 13 13
KSCI 18 18
KTBN 40 23
KVCR 24 26
KCET 28 28
KFTR 46 29
KTLA 5 31
KDOC 56 32
KMEX 34 34
KRCA 62 35
KNBC 4 36
KPXN 30 38
KVEA 52 39
KLCS 58 41
KWHY 22 42
KCBS 2 43
KAZA 54 47
KOCE 40 48
KJLA 57 49
KXLA 44 51

We are going to have a solid block of DTV energy
from channel 31-36 (from 572 to 608 MHz), and
that does not count the other stations.
The only reason that 37 is unoccupied is that it's
reserved for radio astronomy.

I think that the existing multi-microvolt UHF noise
floor is going to get worse, and the mix products
are going to go through the roof.

But for the first time in my lifetime 6m will get
better - channels 2, 4, and 5 are going off the
air (until the FCC sells that spectrum).

Maybe we can put a 6m repeater on the
channel 2 tower? It's 970 feet tall on top
of a 5,000 foot mountain, and the chief
engineer is ham-friendly...

But think of all the power you'll save with a log-periodic pointed at
the mountain connected to a rectifier.

Go for it. See if you can find anyone who'd donate a repeater to that
cause. Though I shudder to think how you'd contain six meter duplexer in
a NEMA box, let alone mount it on a non-elevator tower.

Things are going to get worse rather than better. Any receiver near a DTV
transmitter will be severly desensed. The DTV signal is a solid 6 MHZ wide
blob of RF. Any of the usual suspects such as rusty bolts, fencing
overlaps, etc will be producing multiple mixes. A group locally had a Micor
conversion 220 repeater located adjacent to a DTV Channel 12 site. No
amount of filtering was able to solve the problem. Moving the unit to
another location cleared up the problems.

Now THAT would be cool! Build up something that runs about 1300-1400W
out (properly metered of course), and run remote rx's all over the place
with a voter. The antenna should work OK on a higher pair, above 52.5 or

2009-09-01 Thread John Sehring
Thanks for the infor, but I'm sorry to say that info is available from the
model number as well.

On this (and many radios), this is only the _band_ of operation, not the
_split_, which will be a subset.

For low band Maxtrac's, the splits are 29.7-36, 36-42 and 42-50 MHz. The radio
in one split will not run in another except with extensive ct. value mods. I
know, I have moved ye olde Sensicon and matching tube type transmitters--lots
of effort--but they did work perfectly after the mod.

With SMD circuit boards & such, it'd be much more difficult on a Maxtrac.

You have 6 minutes

This is without a doubt one of the nicest good luck forwards I have received
Hope it works f or you -- and me!
You have 6 minutes

There's some mighty fine advice in these words, even if you're not
superstitious. This has been sent To you for good luck from the Anthony Robbins
organization. It has been sent around the world ten times so Far.

Do not keep this message.

This must leave your hands in 6 MINUTES.Otherwise you will get an unpleasant
surprise. This is true, even if you are not superstitious, areagnostic, or
otherwise faith impaired.

ONE. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

TWO.Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their
conversational skills will be as important as any other.

THREE. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

FOUR. When you say, 'I love you,' mean it .

FIVE. When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the eye.

SIX.. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

SEVEN. Believe in love at first sight.

EIGHT.Never laugh at anyone's dream. People who don't have dreams don't have
much.

NINE.Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to
live life completely.

TEN.In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.

ELEVEN. Don't judge people by their relatives.

TWELVE.Talk slowly but think quickly.

THIRTEEN.When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and
ask, 'Why do you want to know?'

FOURTEEN.Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

FIFTEEN. Say 'God bless you' when you hear someone sneeze.

SIXTEEN. When you lose, don't lose the lesson .

SEVENTEEN. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and
Responsibility for all your actions.

EIGHTEEN.Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

NINETEEN.When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to
correct it.

TWENTY. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.

TWENTY-ONESpend some time alone.

Now, here's the FUN part!

Re: [Repeater-Builder] FW: VSWR Issues

2007-05-28 Thread Paul Guello
What you want is called an isolator. This is a
circulator with the required RF load already attached.
Telewave makes some that will work in the 2-meter ham
band.

Good morning. I am going to try and make this unit into a link radio and I am
in need to know just where to pick off the COS signal. The controller being
used will be a cat-400. I have found that the receive led goes high when
squelch is opened, but the level is to low to be of any use. any suggestions...

[Repeater-Builder] FW: [EMAIL PROTECTED] GR1225

2005-12-31 Thread Eric Lemmon

Brian,

The GR1225 Desktop Repeater uses the R1225 transceiver, which shares the
same RSS (HVN9054) with the P1225 and M1225 radios.

The RX light will always flash when there is a signal on the channel, but if
the PL or DPL doesn't match, you will not hear anything, nor will the signal
be repeated. Press the MON button to enable carrier squelch, and you should
hear the traffic. Once you have programmed the repeater correctly, this
will not be a problem.

One thing to be wary of: Each of the GR1225 repeaters I bought new directly
from Motorola came equipped with pre-tuned Celwave duplexers and a jumper
harness made of RG-58 cable. The desense on the VHF unit was very
prominent- almost 12 dB! I made up a new harness with RG-400
double-shielded cable, and the desense became almost undetectable. Keep
this in mind if you want to extract the maximum performance from this
repeater!

Hi

I have aquired a GR1225 and would like to program it. Could someone
tell me if the R1225 software would work. I do not have the software
and would like to be able to set up this repeater.

Another question if anyone can help, the GR1225 has its RX light
flashing. I can't receive but I can transmit (with the mike). If
someone has an idea what this might be, I think it may just be some
messed up programming.

Thanks

It's an awesome antenna! Just be sure you have the tower capacity to
mount it,it is a BIG GUN! My only experience was 450' up a commercial
tower with a special mount that had them side mounted on opposite sides
of a wide tower with a 90 degree coverage for each. West to South to
East. Worked awesome for handhelds out to the radio horizon. It had a
funny arrangement of the elements, speced out by DB,they were mirrors of
each other at 90 degrees. Killer! 73,Lee

 I haven't tried the 228 yet. But the db-222 I used to
run was outstanding. and the db-215 keyhole pattern
repeater antenna worked extremely well. You really
can't go wrong with db-products equipment. Sadly my
db-222 and db-215 are gathering dust in the garage
now. But I have a db-404 ready to go up on 70cm.

Mike,  WA6ILQ. Thank you for the fine explanation on tower mounting.
When a ham is involved in a commercial site antenna installs must be
commercial specifications. Sometimes one has no choice where the ham
antenna will be mounted. As far as the DB223 antenna, this thing is so massive
that I would never install any part of it above the tower. I am just trying to
get my ducks in a row so when the telephone rings at 7:00 pm and its the tower
owner saying "I have a tower crew coming tomorrow morning", if your ready we can
do your antenna also. Nice article on arcing and sparking. Have that problem too
at another site. As you know many tower sites only bonded and insured
professional tower climbers are allowed to climb and work on the tower.
Gary K2UQ  p.s. just heard AC0Y call in local repeater in E Pa. via
Echolink.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Fw: DB-228

2006-02-16 Thread JamesMNelson

John,

This is a post that I listed a week or so
ago about a 228. Maybe this will help you with some of your questions.

 Rodger,

I have a DB-228 that is mounted in
the center of the Northwest face. The faces are 8’ across if memory
serves me correctly. We are at 635’ Center of Radiation and only running 12.5 watts
in to the cavities but we are getting 45 – 50 mile radius coverage from
the repeater. I have not noticed any REALLY bad nulls any were in the coverage
pattern. I say that but I have also not done a commercial style drive on the
repeater either. I really did not see it necessarily at the time but may do one
at a later date. When the antenna was mounted, we turned the top four dipoles
away from the tower and the bottom four dipoles to the tower. I know that you
asked about a DB-224 and not a 228 but maybe this information will help a
little bit. The antenna is only sitting 24” off of the face, and you said
that you would be mounting off of a leg. Do you know how far off of the leg you
are going to be able to get? If you are going to be less that 2’ –
3’  I would turn all of the dipoles in to the tower leg. If you can
get 4’ or more away from the tower I would point each one of the dipoles
90 degrees apart staring at the top and working you way down clockwise.

Hope this helps.

james//

I like the 228. I work very well for us. I
have not had any problems so for with it exect that we have to modify the mount
to work with the tower. I can send you some pictures of the set up if you would
like. It would be better to send them direct as the are 8MegaPix and run about
2 Meg a piece. I guess that I could cut them down, but then you would loose a
lot of the quilaty, and at 650’ you need the detail to see it.

In a later post you asked about a mount for
a station master. I would use something like a DB-5004 pipe mount if you are
going on a decient size tower. If I remember correctly Db use to make a
fiberglass (I think it was Fiber) pole that was the same length as the 5004
pipe mount. Use the 5004 on the bottom and the Fiber on the top to stabalize
it.

Hope this helps and makes sence.

[Repeater-Builder] Fw: Lo Band PA

2005-06-06 Thread NØATH

- Original Message -
From: NØATH
To: Mastr II Group
Sent: Monday, June 06, 2005 8:07 PM
Subject: Lo Band PA

Hello to the group -

Question number 1
I have an extra lo band GE Mastr II mobile PA
and was
looking at a schematic on the repeater-builder
site. I have lost the way to
that particular page. It displayed the final PA
and showed there being a
10 watt driver section. My question is, would the
input to the 100 watt section
of the PA be at or near 50 ohm? I have a 10 watt
output Ricebox that I use
quite a bit on 52.525 and I was going to try to
build myself a little quickie amp.
I would rather tap in at that point if possible
than put in an attenuator to get
the drive down low enough.

Question number 2
A friend of mine has a 440 Mastr II repeater - If
he hooks the local microphone up
on the backplane, his microphone audio is to low.
Is there an adjustment that will
raise his mike audio without affecting the
repeater audio level. It is fine as is.

Thanks to any one who can help me

NØATH / Dave

John,

Without knowing the model number, it's difficult to answer the
question. I have a TPL amplifier PA6-1AE-RXRF, which takes 5 watts in
and gives 100 watts out. It does not have any fuses in it, but it does
have a resettable circuit breaker rated at 25 amperes on the DC input.

Some of the TPL manuals are available on the Repeater-Builder tech info
pages.

the amp is dead other than the power led. Does any one know if there are
any fuses in the amplifier? I need to move 2 to 3 Micors to get to this

has anyone out there got a Micor repeater PA UHF 75 watt, installed with a
non Motorola repeater? if so what do you do with the yellow control wire?
I know you can not have more that 2 watts in. Do you know what the lowest
power it takes to drive the amplifier?

thanks John

The amp. requires about 1.4 watts to drive, the control wire can be hooked
to a variable supply, between 5 and 12 volts to adjust the power output.

Some of the TPL manuals are available on the Repeater-Builder tech info
pages.

well went to the tower and found no fuses and a circuit breaker switch on
it. but it did not save the amp. no output at all and all transistors are
cold. for your info it is a model pa6-1ae-rxrf 1 to 4 input and 70 to 100
output 450 to 470. and just it had 13.3 volts power going into the amp

Another very good choice for this application is the GLB Preselector / Preamp
from Simrex Corp.

I have several of these deployed on 144 / 220 / 440 Amateur repeaters and they
all perform very well. They can be tuned to maximize gain or selectivity per
your requirements and their support is outstanding.

For extreeme interference, one usage of the preselector has been to place

~3MHz spacing of the notches of the comb for a marine radio BASE application
using ~ 35?? feet of LMR 400 for my stub. One of the notches was placed
directly onto the frequency of collocated marine base station giving us an
extra 22dB of suppression at that frequency.Using excessive length of coax
resulting in a comb allows the overallbandwidth to repeak steeply and with
minimal loss between the notches of the comb. A single notch approach (not
a comb) when placed close to your desired carrier will often have unacceptable
insertional loss at your desired frequency. The comb notch filter is just
extra coax and minimizes the insertion loss close to the notch. . The calcs

This unit looks like the answer for me..I think!
I am in the process of building 2 repeaters on 70cm for possible emergency use
by our Amateur Radio Club. Both will be very portable, I have Vertex VX-2200
radios for one, Hamtronics T304/R306 boards for the other. In keeping the
units very portable, I am using these filters

http://www.polarelectronicindustries.com/model.php/model_id/983/

These filters are being used due to portability, but I have reservations about
performance IF my systems end up sited close to other equipment.
Would the Simrex unit offer advantages when used with my filters? I would look
to getting the higher selectivity spec, in preference to gain.

Hello Doug

Pre amplifiers are nifty gadgets. In my email I am seeking some personal
references about this particular radio and a pre-amp which
may have been tried wioth some level of success.

When you start inserting GAIN ahead of a front end you have to be careful of
overloading the system and introducing
harful side effects.

In very densly congested sites ( lots o f transmitters ) you may havdet
ocomprimise the sensitivity of the reciever for selectivity.
Crystal filter may help - I have found using a receiver with a tight front end
and / or sufficient preselection will triumph over trying to make
a lesser piece of equipment work. Example a GE Mastr III is a super reciever -

In my case I am trying to set up a clients 2 recievers with a little additional
sensitivity - we are using this equipment in a remote site
away form other forms of interference ( boondock tower site ).

Some manufacturers are ARR and EMR - EMR makes a bi-polar amp with variable
gain.
ARR also has a fixed gain version -
ARR was very popular with GaS fet low noise stuff for 800 Mhz - used a lot of
them - exccellent results. Costs $100 thru $350

2010-07-30 Thread Doug Hutchison

Hi Ed,

Understood, was just coincidental that you message popped up as was
looking at potentially adding a pre-amp to my repeater which is not at a
great height nor ever likely to be - long story.

Have tried a few from very good kit form to general purpose broad banded
variable types with little improvement and as you say managed to
overload the front end.

There was a fellow ham over here who was making pre-amps to order but he
seems to have suffered the fate of many small businesses in the
financial downturn.

Although not expensive in themselves, if I bring something in from the
US, postage, insurance and value added tax soon bumps the cost up. I'll
probably just stick with what I have without adding extra problems.

Thank you for your input and advice, always appreciated.

Best regards,
Doug - GM7SVK - Glasgow - Scotland

Guess it's happened to all of us from time to time. It is very east to hit the

My apologies to you, it was NOT a personal attack. I was not offended by the

[Repeater-Builder] Fw: [Motorola-User] quantar pinouts

2007-06-27 Thread Don Kupferschmidt
Hello to the group,

I've been watching this post (below) on Motorola-User and have seen no
replies. Perhaps it's too early in the game (date/time) to see some.

I'm also interested in the Quantars and want to gain some knowledge with
this system. In looking at the repeater-builder website, Kevin has asked
for some articles converting the Quantars into the ham bands with controller
agility. I've only seen one previous post on someone tackling the Quantar
system and taking it down to the ham bands.

So, I'm cross-posting this article into repeater-builder.

Any of the users have either general or specific knowledge on converting the
Quantars that they would like to share with the rest of the group?

Thanks,

Don, KD9PT

Switch a more useful voltage with a transistor "buffering" the signal
from the LED.

Ray, see if you can track down the other side of the resistor that feeds your
receive LED. The voltage swing there should be a lot more than you see on the
LED itself.

Best answer: find an old GE Phoenix or Motorola Maxtrac or something

[Repeater-Builder] FW: Uniden MRS-915 Repeater

2007-09-24 Thread Mark
I originally posted this request on the Manual_Exchange list, but have
gotten no replies - so I will try here. Please pardon the bandwidth if this
is OT...

PLEASE - I'm looking for any manuals - or any other data - for the Uniden
MRS-915 series repeater. I have been given one in pieces and need the
"reassembly" instructions, if nothing else. I plan on converting it to
Amateur band, if possible. And maybe a key for the drawers???

This repeater looks like two Mitrek-style mobile drawer units mounted on a
two-tiered shelf for rack mounting; interconnecting (AKA: control head)
cables are attached to a circuit board-end connector; controller is where
the board-end connector attaches to, mounted on a separate rack-mount panel.
This also came with another box labeled "Trunking Controller".

If anyone has any information on this repeater, I'd be much obliged!!

Thanks in advance...

[Repeater-Builder] FW: climbing cost WAG help

2009-05-08 Thread kf0m

We recently found out our 25 yr old feedlines have been broken and beat up
by the wind at about 700 ft.

Anybody got the background to provide a rough estimate for
 climber costs to
string two runs of hard line to 1300 Ft and remove the old runs?

I am guessing the cost will mean the end of the line for this repeater but
need to let the club board know.

Back when we put these lines up, we could still use the elevator and climb
ourselves. These days we are all 25 yrs older, OSHA made the station
disconnect the elevator, and liability concerns means the station wouldn't
even remotely consider non professionals on the tower.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Fw: Sources of Maxtrac's

2009-08-31 Thread Rich Osman

The manual I referred to is the Motorola manual. The FCC ids are
usually given up front near where the model table data is. Some of the
talkies only have one FCC ID for all subranges in a band, but usually not.

First step is Google the ID and see what you see. Looks like 42-50 split.

Second step is go to the FCC Site:

https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/GenericSearch.cfm

Which in turn leads us to:

https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/GenericSearchResult.cfm?RequestTimeout=500

Where we learn that this radio covers 29.7 - 50 Mhz and that I was sadly
mistaken. Apparently they are now doing variants on a single
authorization. Sigh. Spectra and earlier this trick works.

Subject: Phelps-Dodge duplexer help
A friend has acquired a phelps-dodge
6 cavity duplexer catalog number 499-509.  It is configured in a circle and
each can has a box with a tuning capacitor mounted on top of it.  It says
it covers 136 to 174 MHz.  It has no connecting cables and no instructions
on cable length or tuning.  Could someone help with this
information.  I have attached a picturethanksKerry-WA2NAN

Subject: [Repeater-Builder] VHF
duplexer wanted

Anybody have a decent set of VHF
duplexers for sale?  I have a set of bandpass duplexers on my 34/94 machine,
and it just does not have enough rejection.  I would like to locate a set of
bandpass/bandreject duplexer cavities for it.

Thanks,

Tracy
