Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Tagging dilemmas
In most cases you could come up with a set of regexes to govern whitespace, punctuation and abbreviations and change them to commonly accepted forms (but note this gets gnarly). More difficult are the subtler alterations. MusicBrainz and Discogs both allow the recording of artist aliases, and these often include mis-spellings. By searching for the alias, you can sometimes find the "canonical" artist name. Then you can just use that. 'bliss' (https://www.blisshq.com) - fully automated music library management. Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Should songs from the same album be in the same directory ?
I think the other respondents were suggesting the track files should be *grouped* in one folder per release/album, not that there should be a compilations/ root folder (just to be clear). A lot of people _do_ use a compilations/ folder for their own needs but it shouldn't be necessary. Also, just to point out some background about the organisation you have ended up with which might help in the future. There are two types of artist field - one for the track (ARTIST) and one for the album (ALBUM_ARTIST). ARTIST has a longer history of support, and some software default to it. If the software is not clever enough to use ALBUM_ARTIST in preference, or it ignores the COMPILATION tag, or it doesn't perform some other heuristic, you'll get this problem. I would do (3). Storage (in my case) is cheap, and having a different organisation mechanism (playlists) for compilations adds complexity. Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Taggers / Online music databases
So when you say composer, and you say you're not talking classical, you mean the originator(s) of the music, e.g. Lennon and McCartney? In the case of Discogs, that would come from the track credits in the "Written-By" value. In the case of MusicBrainz, check the "Work" via "Recording" which is linked from each track in each release. This is the kind of data which is less commonly recorded, especially, proportionally, for non-classical releases. Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Classical music tagging in LMS 7.9 -- looking for hints, suggestions, and guidance
I find it most helpful to consider the "album" tag really "release". This helps with both classical and contemporary music, because it's the release which tends to dictate most other associated metadata. For example, differing track lists, differing cover art and so on. Whether you consider the symphony name as the album [release] name depends on the release. As suggested, and as often evidenced by FreeDB data, you sometimes therefore end up pushing more information into the album [release] name to distinguish it; such as performer names. When that's done, change the -Embed cover art in music files- back to -Embed art where possible- and apply rules. If I did this, I could then use a tagging tool to embed the folder.jpg into the tracks. I understand that the 'fixes' thing can be a little vague. A 'fix' is a change to your files for one album to make it comply with your rules. Here, a 'rule' means either the cover art rule, the file org rule, tag versions, genre, information etc. - basically each thing with a separate box on the 'settings' pulldown. For example, imagine you configured the cover art rule requiring a cover.* file, with embedded art required and art must be above 500x500. Each of the following would cost one fix, per album: - Where an album has no art, finding art above 500x500 and saving/embedding it - For an album with a cover.jpg but no embedded art, embedding it - For an album with art below 500x500, finding higher res art and saving/embedding it If you change your rules and re-assess, changing stuff again will cost further fixes. This means the maximum amount of fixes that can be used in one full scan of your collection is (number of albums * number of rules configured). -- elstensoftware 'bliss' (http://www.blisshq.com) - fully automated music library management. I think it comes down to whether you want to represent the track as a component of a 'release' (a better word for album, in my opinion). There's a valid use case for 'miscellanous' tracks in your music collection. Those are waifs and strays added to your collection down the years for which you are not interested in the surrounding release such as B sides, other album tracks etc. For these, I think the correct approach is to *not even tag the album* and therefore no AA either but tag the artist correctly. When applied to compilations, and indeed all albums, I think you need to make the decision of whether to go all-in and consider the track as part of a release, or not. If it's a genuine one-off miscellanous track, I say leave the album, album artist and compilation tags alone. If you think you might want to rip the rest of the compilation later, then just rip the whole thing, be done with it and keep the lot. I think that's what I'd do to save myself the thought processes! -- elstensoftware 'bliss' (http://www.blisshq.com) - fully automated music library management. Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] iTunes Album Art not Showing up
First off, the standard question is have you done a Squeezecenter rescan? but given you say other art is showing fine I'm sure you have. Not sure what version of iTunes you are using, but generally if you have the automatic album art feature turned on in iTunes it downloads the art and stores it -in iTunes-, not in the music file or anywhere else. This means, when you look at it in Squeezeserver, you cannot see the art because Squeezeserver just looks for the art in a file in the same directory or the art embedded in the music file. It's only when you manually add art to albums in iTunes that the art is embedded. Try that. You could also try a manual music tagger like mp3tag to look inside your music files to see if the art is embedded. -- elstensoftware 'bliss' (http://www.blisshq.com) - fully automated music library management. Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Fix my tags, please.
Welcome to the world of digital music libraries! I think you're doing the right thing pursuing an all FLAC library. There's plenty of good software out there for manually editing your library. MP3Tag has been mentioned. Picard too. MediaMonkey is popular and powerful. There are others. They can take a fair bit of work if you have a whole library, and to retain consistency between tagging styles (e.g. remembering what genres you have used) can be a pain to straighten out, but in theory they should do what you need. Your next level of pain will probably be sorting your tagging in a way your music players (I assume SqueezeX, but you may use others) can understand. There are quite a few subtleties in this, for instance the different ways different players treat compilations. Oh and then you want album art - 'blatant plug' (http://musiclibrarymanagement.blogspot.com/2009/10/automatic-album-art-management-with.html). And then you have to remember to apply all the rules you learnt/decided above when you add new music. [SlimDevices: Ripping] Looking for participants in the bliss beta
bliss is software that organises your music library according to the rules you define. bliss works differently to other music organisers: instead of editing your music files, bliss allows you to configure 'rules' which it then applies to your music collection. These could govern everything from the maximum size of cover art images to the different genres present in your collection. bliss applies these rules to your collection at all times, including when your library is updated. bliss can be run on demand, or run and left to perform its magic fully automatically. We are about to enter a beta phase where we are seeking to test the core application with a very narrow feature set. The bliss beta, when pointed at your music library, will simply download cover art for all of your music that does not currently have cover art. It saves it as a separate file with a name you choose (e.g. 'cover' for SqueezeCenter). Future developments will add more functionality both for cover art download and other music organisation tasks (to read more about these, see the 'Music Library Management blog' (http://musiclibrarymanagement.blogspot.com/). We are looking for beta testers who will install bliss and try it with their music library. To get involved, please visit: http://www.blisshq.com/signup.html In return for being an active beta tester you will receive a full licence for bliss and a year long subscription for future updates and bug fixes. I hope this post is ok by the rules of the forum. -- elstensoftware 'bliss' (http://www.blisshq.com) - fully automated music library management. Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Looking for participants in the bliss beta
Thanks MrSinatra, because even if you don't use it this is exactly the sort of feedback I'm looking for! Your suggestion is also exactly the sort of thing the 'rule based' approach is trying to cover. Currently you just provide a prefix for the cover art filename. However, the rule could be expanded to download to 'n' different files, maybe a backup file or maybe one named based on the album name, and ensure that 'rule' is kept to. Doing this manually again and again each time you add music (not to mention the times when you decide you want the filenames to be different) would take a long time. The approach works for tag based and other music management too. If I want to structure my music files, say, based on {ARTIST}/{ALBUM} and change my mind to it being just {ALBUM} (and then maybe even change my mind back again) that's a lot of work when doing it manually! With the rule based way you just change the rule once, and it's done on your behalf... -- elstensoftware 'bliss' (http://www.blisshq.com) - fully automated music library management. The path you specified, \\Ripserver\music\Berlioz, is a UNC path... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path_(computing)#Uniform_Naming_Convention So as a workaround, you could try mapping that path to a drive letter, and then use the drive letter-qualified path. E.g. map \\Ripserver\music\ to q: and then point the script at: q:\Berlioz -- elstensoftware 'bliss' (http://www.blisshq.com) - fully automated music library management elstensoftware's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31345 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65248 ___ ripping mailing list ripping@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] changing (automatically) Metadata to FLAC files
What CD ripper did you use originally? If we know that we can work out where your original data came from and maybe suggest tagger software that uses that same data. Picard, as suggested above, is a good place to start though, because it leverages the MusicBrainz database which is more complete and consistent than most other sources. More importantly for this problem, it has better support for internationalisation than, for instance, CDDB. -- elstensoftware 'bliss' (http://www.blisshq.com) - fully automated music library management elstensoftware's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31345 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64275 ___ ripping mailing list ripping@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping
Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Disc and Track order mixed up
Is it ripping each track as separate files or are they all in one file, per disc, with a cue sheet? The underlying problem is probably that the original CDDB information downloaded by XLD is incorrect (also - telling us what the disc title would be useful). Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Managing Both Lossless and Lossy Files
I'm not sure what OS you use, but I find the most efficient way of doing this is to use mp3fs. You point it at your flac files and it provides a virtual file system which looks exactly the same but lists mp3s instead of flacs. -- elstensoftware elstensoftware's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31345 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64731 ___ ripping mailing list ripping@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping
