I am by no means a qualified nerd, but rather, a creative who--in this
day and age--has to make the hardware work by myself. Recently, I have
put the CentOS 7 appliance on 2 radically different computers (laptop
and desktop), and they worked brilliantly right out of the box. Both
were recent hardware, which may make a difference, but if the appliance
doesn't work, try different hardware.

An IT pro is helping to build a client machine on Pi's, which would
solve some logistic problems at a particular installation, and that task
is daunting. But after batting a thousand with the appliance on recent
hardware, I don't know how it could get any easier. I have been working
nearly exclusively with Linux since 2011 and the CentOS 7 installer is
the absolute best of the major distros. Current problem is not
Rivendell at all, but getting the Cinelerra-CV video editor to install
on an Ubuntu Studio laptop installation. The Rivendell appliance was a
breeze compared to that.

Re: [RDD] Github being "assimilated" by the evil empire of Redmond

2018-06-04 Thread Bill Putney

I've been following this thread a little and a few things come to mind.

Once you get deep down in bugville it takes a nerd to figure things out.
If it's a *nix nerd, could be anyone and since there are "man pages",
about anyone can figure out most things on their own. If it's Windoz
nerd, they have to have gone to the M$ certification training and have
taken generous doses of Redmond supplied Cool-Aid®. There is nowhere for
you to find out those "secrets" to help yourself.

Most people get all frustrated by *nix because it gives you the tools to
try to help yourself. Fixing a difficult problem can be hard. If you
have a similar bug in Windows most people try never try to fix it
themselves, and so, are frustrated by the support system not the
operating system.

If you just apply a Windows user perspective on *nix system use, all
will be well. Immediately upon encountering a problem, through up your
hands and find a nerd to fix it.

As for Rivendell... It's really a pretty mature product. For all the
things it does it can be compared in complexity to the Office suite. You
can buy a Paravel appliance with the hardware and software ready to plug
and play. Or, you can buy/build your own hardware system and use the
Rivendell Appliance LiveCD and the most complex issue you'll have to
deal with is what timezone you're in. If you pay for support from
Paravel, it is the least expensive thing you'll pay for at a broadcast
station. Why wouldn't you do that, even if you are a nerd? Paravel
spends a lot of time and energy keeping Rivendell up to snuff and adding
features. Why wouldn't you want them to stay a healthy business enterprise?

If you want to live on the bleeding edge by trying to setup and operate
one of the many excellent ports of Rivendell, you have to accept some of
the risk/rewards that brings. But, you're way outside what a user could
even start to attempt in the Windows world. Attempts to make Rivendell
"better" by porting it to Windows ignores a lot about how Windows is
supported. Are you ever going to find a nerd that can help you support
your Windows port of Rivendell? You're way past pointing fingers at
Redmond at that point.

I have tried rdimport and it didn't work either. I tried using a third
party tagger and the name is still not showing up in the cuts withing the

using a compiled version of rivendell 2.13.0 on a raspberry pi. Fred, any

Re: [RDD] Github being "assimilated" by the evil empire of Redmond

2018-06-04 Thread Lorne Tyndale
Hi,

I think the trick to make this work would be to only run the GUI on a
Windows box and leave all the file and audio handling, all the daemons
on a Linux box.

If all the file handling that is done by the GUI (such as RDAirplay,
RDLibrary, etc) is routed through the Apache service, and with all the
audio stuff being done through CAED, then I would think that for a
Windows box it *should* be possible to specify to put those services on
a Linux box, only run the GUI on Windows (we do have QT3 on Windows).
The limitation would be that audio and file handling would need to be on
a Linux server.

At the moment we're almost there - in rdadmin you can already specify
the location of caed and apache. But as I understand it there are areas
in the code which don't work fully this way.

The other way to accomplish something like this with the current code is
to run X on Windows talking to a Linux box (xming or similar) or VNC and
remote desktop to the Linux box.

I don't see a problem here unless something drastically changes at
github.
Microsoft has made quite a number of contributions to the open source
world in the last years with almost 2k repositories and >1k3 employees
pushing code to github.
It is the second biggest contributor of opensource (only google
contributed more).
And thanks to WSL, Rivendell now runs on Windows - you could say
"natively without any VM" around it.

I don't like some of the moves MS made in its company history, but the
last years really changed the game.

Just my 2 cents ;-)
