[RollTideFan] Castille stands by Alabama

2003-06-07 Thread SAR
MOBILE, Ala. - Tim Castille never wavered from his commitment to Alabama, not when
the football program was put on probation, when Dennis Franchione left or when Mike
Price was fired.
The son of former Crimson Tide All-American Jeremiah Castille, he was one of the top
signees in Price's lone recruiting class.

This is where I wanted to go, and so I'll stick with them through thick and thin,
Castille told The Mobile Register.

He is expected to be an all-purpose offensive presence in the Alabama-Mississippi
All-Star Classic today at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Castille, who started his varsity career as an eighth-grader, holds the Alabama prep
record with 9,544 all-purpose yards.

He rushed for 3,626 yards and 55 touchdowns, had 4,122 receiving yards and caught 41
TD passes in leading Briarwood Christian to a pair of Class 3A state championships.

Jeremiah Castille has returned to his alma mater as the Fellowship of Christian
Athletes director.

They treated him really, really well, and I see how they treat him now, very well,
said Tim Castille. That's huge on me going there.

If I can be half as good as he was and be able to come back to the state and people
still recognize me and love me for what I did 20 years ago, then that would mean a lot
to me. ... $*%# SNIP

http://makeashorterlink.com/?V2CC217D4

Castille's brother, Simeon, is considered one of the state's top prospects next year.

I've got a 13yo and a 14yo playing this year. On a team that was thrown
together just a few days before the season started. Mostly a bunch of
misfits and clumsy types.

They lost the first three games 6-1, 15-0, 16-1 They pretty much
sucketh. Last Thursday night they were the home team losing the game
hugely going into the bottom of the 5th (and last) inning.

Well they scored a couple 3 runs (no outs) and we all start looking at
each other going WTF's wrong with these guys? Then they scored a
couple 3 more. So we're like Is there any need in asking what the
score is?. So they score a couple more. Somebody hollers What's the
score? It's the first time all year anyone cared.

No, they didn't win, but they had a 9 run inning losing 16-12. And
there was much glee. I like watching kids play baseball.

All-Star Football Classic On TV Again

Thousands of football fans throughout the Southeast who will not be able
to be at Mobiles Ladd-Peebles Stadium June 7 will have the opportunity
to see the 16th Alabama-Mississippi High School All-Star Classic via the
FOX Sports Net cable television network. The kickoff is 7 p.m.

For the ninth consecutive year, FOX Sports Net will telecast this annual
high school football showcase as a presentation of the Bryant-Jordan
Foundation and its corporate sponsors.

The Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete Program, underwritten by the
Foundation, awards thousands of dollars in collegiate scholarships to
deserving high school athletes each year. The scholarships are based on
factors ranging from a high level of athletic and scholastic achievement
to a students determination to overcome obstacles in achieving a level
of success commensurate with his or her ability.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association, as co-sponsor of the
Bryant-Jordan Student Athlete Program, is excited that the All-Star
Classic is again being televised on a regional basis, said Dan
Washburn, Executive Director of the Alabama High School Athletic
Association. The Bryant-Jordan Program highlights our outstanding
athletes, promotes the importance of academic achievement and encourages
our young people to become involved in athletics, while the All-Star
Classic represents all of those positive elements of interscholastic
athletics.

Fox Sports Net is a regional sports network for the Southeast and
televises more than 600 live sporting events each year to a seven-state
region that includes Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North
Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Launched in 1990, Fox Sports Net
currently reaches over 9 million homes in the region and is the largest
and fastest growing regional network in the country.

Scheduled as the announcing team for the telecast are play-by-play
announcer Bob Rathbun, replacing the late Jim Fyffe, and color
commentator Doug Barfield.

Fyffe, who was the popular radio voice of Auburn University football and
basketball for over 20 years, served as the play-by-play announcer since
the inaugural game in 1988, including all eight of the FSN telecasts.

Rathbun, who does the Atlanta Braves' Wednesday night games on FSN, is
respectful of the situation he's stepping into.

Jim Fyffe was just a great broadcaster, he said Tuesday after
receiving his assignment. I know we're going to do something in Jim's
honor. When we get together (with our producer) at the end of the week,
we'll put our heads together and come up with something.

Barfield presently serves as Director of Marketing for the Alabama High
School Athletic Association. Prior to joining the staff at the AHSAA, he
was athletic director at Mobile's UMS-Wright Prep School after heading
the athletic program at the University of Mobile.

Barfield coached football for 28 years at the high school and college
levels, including positions as assistant football coach, athletic
director and head football coach at University Military School in Mobile
from 1960-65. From 1976-81, he served as head football coach at Auburn
University. He also served five years as athletic director and head
football coach at Opelika High School. Throughout his career, Coach
Barfield has compiled a record of 117 wins, 54 losses and two ties as
head football coach.

Barfield was named SEC Working Coach of the Year in 1974-75, and to the
Southern Mississippi Football Hall of Fame in 1975. In addition, he has
coached in the Blue-Gray and Hula Bowl games, and was the Alabama Class
6A high school Coach of the Year in 1991.

While Rathbun and Barfield will be handling things from the booth,
veteran television anchor Randy Patrick will be roaming the sidelines
for interesting tidbits and information throughout the All-Star Classic.
Patrick serves as the sports anchor for WKRC Channel 5 in Mobile.

University of Alabama marks 40th anniversary of Wallace's stand

By JAY REEVES
Associated Press Writer
American politics changed 40 years ago this week at a schoolhouse door
in Alabama.

Five months after vowing segregation forever at his 1963 inaugural,
Gov. George C. Wallace tried to block the admission of two black
students to the all-white University of Alabama on a hot June day.

Wallace's act of defiance - which was mostly political stagecraft and
came to be called the stand in the schoolhouse door - failed to keep
out minorities. With about 19,600 students, Alabama's student body is
now 13 percent black.

But something much broader did happen that day. Wallace was forever
launched on to the national political scene and the national Democratic
Party firmly took its place in the corner of civil rights.

What happened that day did represent a tectonic shift in American
politics, said Culpepper Clark, Alabama's communications dean and the
author of a book on the showdown.

A Democratic populist at the time, Wallace was elevated as a champion of
conservative whites who helped launch the Reagan revolution in 1980.
Wallace, who later renounced his segregationist views, was supporting
Republicans by the time he died in 1998.

By publicly opposing Wallace, President John F. Kennedy and his brother,
Attorney General Robert Kennedy, helped chart their party's course for
decades to come, according to Clark.

The Kennedy administration that evening fully embraced the civil rights
movement and identified the Democratic Party with that movement and all
the subsequent efforts to end the effects of discrimination, Clark said.

Wallace warned at the time that the Kennedys risked losing the solid
South, and indeed they did, said Clark, who wrote The +Schoolhouse+
Door: Segregation's Last Stand at the University of Alabama.

The university will hold a three-day observance this week to mark the
anniversary of Wallace's infamous stand. Honorees include the two black
students who Wallace faced down that day - Vivian Malone Jones and James
Hood.

Jones, who entered as a junior after attending a historically black
college, became the first black graduate of Alabama in 1965. Hood left
after a few months but returned to receive his doctorate in 1997.

I wanted to finish what I started, Hood said.

Robert Kennedy Jr., whose father managed the federal response to
Wallace's segregationist stance, will speak Tuesday. Wednesday, a
candlelight vigil will be held at Foster Auditorium, where the stand
occurred.

The observance was welcomed by black students such as Laborian Jones,
who didn't know much about the events of 1963 when he enrolled at Alabama.

Jones, 24, learned about Wallace's stand only when he saw members of a
black sorority marching across campus in an annual remembrance.

I found out about it and it was like, `Man, that was something,' said
Jones, of Montgomery, who hopes to graduate soon and start his own business.

Wallace's stand came during a time of racial turmoil across the South.

Rioting broke out in 1956 when Autherine Lucy briefly became the first
black to enroll at Alabama. Bloody fights over the integration of public
schools and universities occurred later in Mississippi and Arkansas.

Despite Wallace's opposition to integration, a federal judge ordered him
to admit blacks to Alabama. Change seemed inevitable.

After being threatened with contempt and jail, Wallace entered into days
of tense negotiations with the Kennedy administration through
intermediaries. The result was the stand in the +schoolhouse+ door.

With scores of state troopers on campus to keep away troublemakers,
Wallace fulfilled a promise by literally standing in the doorway of
Foster Auditorium to block the admission of Jones and Hood, who were
accompanied by Deputy U.S. Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach.

Hood said it was all just a show: He and Jones already had registered
and gotten their dormitory assignments. All we had to do was pay our
fees, he said.

With TV cameras rolling, Wallace decried the federal government's
involvement in what he claimed was a state issue. Katzenbach's group
retreated after a few minutes.

President Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard, and Wallace
made another jut-jawed stand later that day when the students returned.
He finally stepped aside at the request of Guard Gen. Henry Graham, who
said it was his sad duty to ask Wallace to move.

Hood and Malone entered the building through another door. Wallace went
back to Montgomery, his base in four subsequent runs for the White
House. Wallace had made a point politically; he was elected to three
more terms as governor. Blacks were enrolled at Alabama to stay, and no
one got hurt.

The scene was vastly different from what occurred in September 1962 at
the University of Mississippi

I'd suggest she not be riding around in the USA with a veil on in the

looking like a terrorist. Basically, I would try to look as 'American'

2003-06-07 Thread Pat Smoot
Johnny Musso's kid did want to come to BAMA, but I believe it was Dumbose at
the time, wouldn't even give him the time of day. I remember Johnny Musso
being interviewed on the radio about it while he was here for a golf
tournament. He was a little bitter about it because he did want his son to
be at BAMA.

Does anyone else find this a bit weird? What's
 going to happen when a
police officer stops her and ask her to remove the
 veil to verify her
identity? Does she have to comply since it is
 against her religious
belief? Seems a little sticky, but I agree with
 the initial ruling here.

I'd suggest she not be riding around in the USA with
 a veil on in the
first place. Also, probably not a good idea to walk
 into a bank
looking like a terrorist. Basically, I would try to
 look as 'American'
as possible as long as I was in AMERICA. If she has
 a problem
with it, she can always get the fuck out of Dodge
 City.

Anyone can claim to be a Republican a lot more do now because it's the
popular thing to do. Scott was trying to make his point, not someone
 else's.

John Dean worked for Nixon, so he ain't no Johnny Come Lately to the
Republican Party.

As for Scott's point, well you never really know what that dude's up to.

Based on most of the posts here since the end of baseball season, I'd
suggest Ugly Kid Joe's (I Hate) Everything About You.

Re: [RollTideFan] A violation of Islamic beliefs? (non)

2003-06-07 Thread Stewart Jackson
In my book, she'd be treated like any other offender. I'd request a facial
view to check against the photo on the DL. No compliance; free one-way
trip to local barred bed and breakfast, to wait her out. Print and book and
lock, but with dignity as determined by behaviour. If she had to remain
overnight, out of the black suit and into the orange or the black/white
stripes. Can't help that she's got a religious thing. We got a prisoner
thing that takes prescidence. When in jail, do as jail-birds do. My $.02
worth.
