[RollTideFan] More Than 7,000 Gather for Nude Exhibit
More Than 7,000 Gather for Nude Exhibit Sun Jun 8, 8:25 AM ET By SARAH ANDREWS, Associated Press Writer BARCELONA, Spain - More than 7,000 people gathered at daybreak Sunday and shed their clothes in the morning chill to take part in artist Spencer Tunick's largest work yet - an installation featuring a sea of nude bodies covering a central Barcelona avenue. AP Photo AP Photo Slideshow: Thousands Pose Nude for Art Exhibit The New York native has achieved worldwide renown for his work, which often features large numbers of nude people posing in urban settings. Though he refers to his art as "temporary site-related installations," he is best known for the photographs he takes of these events. "I want people to feel uncomfortable that they've demonized the body," Tunick said in an interview with The Associated Press shortly before staging his Barcelona installation. "I want them to feel uncomfortable at first and then realize it's just skin. Yes, the body can be a shape." He called the Barcelona installation a great visual success. "I created a river of bodies like I've never made before. It was an amazing pink and tan carpet." At 4 a.m. (0200 GMT) people began arriving at Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina, a broad thoroughfare lined with fountains. They undressed in a nearby building and were naked for more than an hour as Tunick had them pose four ways: standing, lying down, curled up in balls and hugging each other. "For me this represents the fragility of the body," said Joan Alexandre Betriu, 53, a participant who called it a "vital, aesthetic and moral" event. Irene Mohedano, 34, posed with her 5-month old daughter Irene. "This is a work of art," she said. "It may be my only chance to pose for something like this, so I have to take advantage of it." Tunick said he uses people as raw materials to change perception of space. "I'm using the body as a substance, an abstraction. If the body is nude in front of a background, it creates a new meaning for the background. It makes you think about the background in a different way." Barcelona joins London, Lisbon, Buenos Aires, Santiago and many other European and South American cities in hosting Tunick. Sunday's spectacle was his largest yet. Until now his grandest project of this type was an installation involving 4,500 nude people in Melbourne, Australia in 2001. "In the U.S. they consider the body a crime," said the artist, who has been arrested five times in New York City for working with nudes in public. "In other countries it's celebrated as something special." Barcelona was particularly accepting of his work, Tunick said, citing praise from Mayor Joan Clos. Though Tunick insists his work is far removed from commercial nude photography, he recognizes that the fact that he works with nude bodies is a major factor in his success. University of Alabama football player Justin Smiley was among the residents ducking for cover when the shots rang out. "I was in my backyard minding my own business, joking around with some buddies, and some dude started yelling racial slurs at us," Smiley said. "The next thing I know, someone started shooting at us." The person who shot the gun and the group of residents and friends behind the apartments had been yelling back and forth through the wooded area around 7:50 p.m., police said. "We were out barbecuing, and someone started yelling for us to shut up," said Paul Cimino, whose apartment was left with bullet holes in the porch screen, back window, ceiling and living room wall. "Some jawing went back and forth. Someone over here said ëYou don't know who you're messing with,' and then we heard gunshots." Tuscaloosa Police Department spokesman Capt. David Hartin said that, according to the report taken by officers at the scene, someone at the apartments fired a gun into the air "to make the person stop shooting." EVERYONE isn't down on TPOTUS/CIC, Mike. If you think back not too long ago, Clinton was under attack from one faction or the other, every day of the week for eight years. Not EVERYONE mind you, but it was CONSTANTLY someone. When WMD are finally found, that won't stop the criticism. The critics will just move on to the next act/scene in the script. I have followed politics, current events, etc., closely since circa 1976. Based on my observations, this kind of shit never ends, and it doesn't matter who TPOTUS is. Mark my words: When the WMD issue is finally resolved, all we'll hear about DAY and NIGHT will be the state of our economy. None of this really bothers me. One really takes a HuGe chance when speaking out against the CIC these days. Do it right and you can when a spot in the Deck of Death cards and you certainly won't get your music played on the radio (although you may sell out your concerts and increase the overall sales of your cds). You also may not be able to take part in a Baseball tradition at Cooperstown surrounding the Hall of Fame induction where the film Bull Durham was shown for a number of years, but at the last minute was cancelled because of the opposition to the war and the CIC voiced by 3 of the actors in the movie. These are just a few examplesall of which have been well tolerated n(if not encouraged) by the general public. We haven't seen such a following of a CIC since Uncle Ronny. So, I do not really see where the CIC is under THAT much criticism by the American public. ScR __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan! Re: [RollTideFan] Is Lying About The Reason For War An Impeachable Offense?
I did not write it. John Dean wrote it. Although I do not believe it to an impeachable deal, I do believe we were misled into backing the war. Sorta like the media machine misled us into believing that Pvt. Lynch was rescued in some very risky, secret, special ops mission and there was some kind of heavy firefight. When in reality, the Iraqi doctors tried to deliver her to the American forse a day or two before, butt were turned back by artillery fire on their ambulance The Democrat brainwashing hasn't been working since 9/11. I'm so tried of everyone down on our President and Commander in Chief, did any one stop and think that the WMD's are no longer in Iraq, but could have been shipped to Syria or another country for safe keeping so they could be used at a later date by that country. Saddam hasn't been captured or confirmed dead yet, why do think there is still the on going attacks on our troops the head of snake hasnt been chopped off yet.
