Act right and I'll let you buy me a rack of ribs at Dreamland.

At the USC game, several of the fans around us were commenting on how much
Mike's sideline behavior mirrors that of Dubose. I can see that. I can
understand about how a coach should be classy and all, but there are times
when a ref or a player needs to be on the receiving end of a verbal assault.
I feel the team needs to see some emotion from Mike in order to re-assure
their belief in him wanting the team to make plays and win.

If the coach doesn't get fired up, don't expect the players to.

[RollTideFan] The Morrall of the story

2004-10-12 Thread Jeff Todd
Backup quarterbacks can win - just ask Tide coach's dad
Tuesday, October 12, 2004
By PAUL GATTIS
Times Sports Staff [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Maybe it's a Shula thing, something in the genes that
passed from father to son.

Before the Super Bowl became an overblown circus known
more for its wardrobe malfunction than the game itself,
there was Don Shula.

He was a sideline fixture in the days when the Super
Bowl was just a game and not a corporate festival. The
father of Alabama's football coach guided teams to four
of the first eight Super Bowls.

And a more subtle aspect of that legacy is that twice
Shula did it with backup quarterbacks.

I won a lot of games with backup quarterbacks, Shula
said Saturday while watching Alabama's 45-17 win over
Kentucky.

To which son Mike might ask, What's the secret?

That's because the Crimson Tide has used three starting
quarterbacks in six games this season in compiling a 4-2
record.

Brodie Croyle started the first three games before
tearing a knee ligament and being sidelined for the
season. Marc Guillon then stepped in and struggled
through two games before missing the Kentucky game with
a stiff back.

Third-string quarterback Spencer Pennington turned in an
admirable effort, according to offensive coordinator
Dave Rader, in the blowout victory over Kentucky.

But where is Earl Morrall when you really need him?

Morrall, now retired and living in Naples, Fla., was
Shula's backup quarterback with the Baltimore Colts in
1968. But he became the starter when Johnny Unitas went
down with an elbow injury in the final game of the
preseason.

That injury, in fact, caused nerve damage in Unitas' arm
and was once the subject of a cover story in Sports
Illustrated.

With Morrall at quarterback, the Colts went 13-1 and
marched into Super Bowl III as the NFL champions and the
overwhelming favorites to whip the AFL's New York Jets.
Of course, no one remembers Super Bowl III for Morrall.

That was another quarterback. The New York Jets' Joe
Namath - ironically, a former Alabama quarterback -
guaranteed a victory and then led a 16-7 win over the
Colts.

Morrall would get his Super Bowl ring with the Colts in
the 16-13 win over Dallas in Super Bowl V, again
stepping in when Unitas was forced from the game with
bruised ribs. But by then, Shula had already moved on to
coach the Miami Dolphins.

After that game, though, Shula engineered Morrall's
arrival in Miami.

He was a veteran quarterback who had been around and
played a lot, Shula said. He was brought in just for
that reason - as insurance. When I got to Miami and he
became available, I said to my owner that I wanted to
bring him in.

Yes, Shula wanted him, but Dolphins owner Joe Robbie
didn't. As Shula remembered more than 30 years later,
this is the conversation they had:

Why? You've got Bob Griese? Robbie said.

Just as insurance, Shula replied.

What's he making?

Well, he's making a lot of money - $90,000.

$90,000 for a backup?

Indeed, that insurance policy became a sweet safety net
for the Dolphins when Griese broke his ankle in the
fifth game of the 1972 season.

And Shula and Morrall were united again.

In NFL history, 1972 stands alone without explanation -
an acronym of sorts for perfection. Each season, until
all 32 teams lose a game, the '72 Dolphins are the
inevitable standard of comparison until their 17-0
record remains unmatched and largely unchallenged for
still another year.

Perfection, achieved with a backup quarterback.

Morrall completed 83-of-150 passes that season for 1,360
yards and 11 touchdowns - laughably modest numbers in
today's pass-happy game. But Morrall was named the AFC's
Player of the Year by The Sporting News.

Morrall wasn't a part of the ultimate win that season -
the 14-7 victory over Washington in Super Bowl VI -
because Shula chose to go back to a recovered Griese.
Morrall, according to a 2002 story in the Boston Globe,
was disappointed but understanding.

So is there a moral in this story for Mike Shula?

You've got to have them for a while and make sure that
you train them properly, his father said. And you've
got to give them some reps in practice.

That's the advantage father had over son. Morrall had
been in the NFL for 12 years before replacing Unitas in
1968. And in the undefeated season with the Dolphins,
Morrall was 38 years old.

That hardly compares to Guillon and Pennington, who had
one career start between them coming into this season.
And in that start, Pennington was forced from the game
in the third quarter with a separated shoulder.

There's no magic things I can tell him, Shula said.
I'll watch a game and we'll talk and go over
situations. Nobody knows me better than Mike and nobody
knows Mike better than me.

He's paying for sins of the past. When he gets his
fulfillment of scholarships and gets them coached,
that's when Mike should be judged.

It's the plight of a coach, to be defined by your
surroundings - be it the plays your players make or the
NCAA sanctions that came

[RollTideFan] Coach Mike Shula Press Conference

2004-10-12 Thread Rick Mc.
http://www.rolltide.com/Football/11365.asp
Coach Mike Shula Press Conference: Southern Miss
Tuesday, October 12, 2004
Transcript of Opening Comments and 1st Five Questions
Opening Comments:
First of all, Ray Hudson will undergo surgery today and he will be out
for the remainder of the season, Ken Darby will start in his place.
Spencer Pennington will start at quarterback. Keith Brown, hopefully,
will be back this week; well see how he does in practice. He looked
good Sunday, when we had our light workout. Our team is a little beat
up right now, but the focus is good. Everyone feels a lot more
confident after getting a win. We realize we have a tough Southern Miss
team coming in here. Theyre tough every year; this is probably the
best Southern Miss team Alabamas faced in a while. Its a better team
than last year, theyre undefeated, ranked 25th, play solid defense give
you a lot of looks offensively, even though their starting quarterback
is out, Damian Carter came in, won the game for them in overtime. Hes
got more experience now and looked very good doing it in overtime. Hes
very athletic, runs the option, they do a lot of things offensively and
special teams, theyve always been known for their special teams with
their coverages, their returns, theyve got one of the best returners in
the country, one of the fastest in Eubanks, so they bring a lot to the
table and their well-coached, Coach Bowers as done a great job and
theyre very deserving of their 25th ranking, or 24th I guess, in some
polls.

Mike, with Spencer (Pennington), should we consider this a deal where he
won the job on the field or is it an injury thing and the other guy gets
better and he comes back.

Spencers our starting quarterback this week. And weve got to get
Marc (Guillon) back healthy; hes not 100% yet either. He seems to be
feeling better so far than he did at any point last week, towards the
end of last week.

How much do you go back and look and last years game plan to get ready
for this game with Southern Miss?

We do that a lot for the teams we play each year and just compare how
they played us, compared to how theyre playing this year and later on
after we played them last year. Obviously the personnel is different in
some areas and then last year because of their quarterback starting as a
freshman last year and now the changes theyve done theyve had with
this year with the other guy, Almond, and now theyre going back to
Carter. But theyve got good personnel, theyve lost a couple guys that
were good players on defense and other guys have stepped up. Boley is
one of the better linebackers well see all year and very physical and
athletic, gets to the football and makes a lot of plays. Defensively
theyve had a lot of turnovers; I think theyve got nine interceptions
in four games so I think theyre very opportunistic that way.

Mike, I think theres a feeling among fans who are looking at the
schedule that this game is really the season if youre going to go to a
bowl game. Do you encourage that kind of talk with your players or do
you deflect it away from them?

We treat this game like all the others weve talked about, just
focusing on one week. I think theres a little more incentive because
Southern Miss is, we know theyre a good football team; theyre a lot
better Southern Miss team than we played last year and they were good
last year. Theyve only lost one game since we played them last year
and that was the bowl game. Homecoming too, I think our guys take a lot
of pride and want to play well at home on Homecoming weekend.

Coach, kind of a two-parter, can you talk about what Ken (Darby) does
well and how hes impressed you and how tough it is, what a challenge it
is for this team to have to replace yet another, one of your offensive
leaders.

I think Ken, in a lot of ways, similar to Ray (Hudson), you know Ray
kind of waited patiently for his opportunity, he played last year and
contributed and helped us win some games last year and all of a sudden
had his opportunity to start and got a lot more carries and flourished
really, for the first half of the season. I kind of think Ken Darby can
be the same type of, could have that same type of productivity. Hes
kind of waiting his turn, hes showing signs of elusiveness, speed,
toughness, quickness and now hes going to have a greater opportunity.

As far as our team dealing with injuries, I think our guys have done a
great job that way. Just focused in on each guy doing their job a
little bit better, havent really made a big deal of it. Were getting
better depth in positions, even though were young in some areas, weve
had some injuries at certain positions where weve been fortunate enough
to have probably as good of depth on the team and thats at running back
and at times linebackers with Juwan (Garth) being out. Its just a
matter for our guys of focusing in on their own responsibility and not
letting a

My apologies, Jamie, I shouldn't have made light of your question. It's
my understanding that Gilligan's back tightens up on him and hinders his
throwing motion, but Shula said on Sunday he *could* have played against
UK if needed. Now if Gilligan's back gets worse, then yes, we are
officially SOL.

Guud kweshun.

The fraudulence of the lefts concern about poverty is exposed by their
utter lack of interest in ways of increasing the nations wealth. Wealth is
the only thing that can cure poverty. The reason there is less poverty today
is not because the poor got a bigger slice of the pie but because the whole
pie got a lot biggerno thanks to the left.
