The Rest of the Story
Two Memphis federal court cases get lopsided coverage from local media.
JOHN BRANSTON

Media coverage of two big pending federal court cases -- one involving former medical
examiner O.C. Smith and one involving football booster Logan Young -- again failed to
note the significance of the latest developments.

In the Smith case, a fellow medical examiner concluded that the Shelby County Regional
Forensic Center is unresponsive and handles evidence carelessly and that Smith,
accused of faking a bizarre attack on himself in 2002, made statements under oath with
professional certainty that were actually opinions and speculative.

In Young's case, a judge promised to act within a month on a motion to dismiss the
case. In a related case in Alabama, two University of Alabama officials gave
affidavits about the NCAA investigation of the Albert Means recruiting case that
suggest that it may be a house of cards.

The Commercial Appeal, heavily invested in the credibility of Smith in general and in
the NCAA and state and federal prosecutors in Young's case, ignored key elements of
both stories.

Taking the Smith case first, Smith's apologists put a positive spin on Nashville
medical examiner Bruce Levy's report last month, in which Levy agreed that Philip
Workman fired the gunshot that killed Memphis police lieutenant Ronald Oliver in 1981.
Workman is on death row.

Governor Phil Bredesen asked Levy to review Smith's testimony in clemency hearings for
Workman in 2000 and 2001. (Smith is under federal indictment for giving false
statements about the alleged attack on him.) Last year, Bredesen issued a stay of
execution for Workman pending completion of the Smith investigation. When the feds
called Smith a liar, the governor asked Levy to review his Workman testimony.

I am not at all surprised by Dr. Levy's opinion, said Shelby County district
attorney general Bill Gibbons. It is what I expected. Twenty-two years ago, a jury of
citizens decided that Philip Workman deserved the death penalty. It is past time to
carry out that decision.

Levy's report, however, should give pause to any prosecutor dependent on Smith. It is
anything but an endorsement. On the contrary, Levy was critical of Smith on several
counts, including his work on the Workman case. There was initial difficulty locating
the original autopsy materials from Smith's office, according to Levy. Levy requested
materials from Smith's office in February but was told that they were missing. They
were eventually located after my fourth request, reportedly during a search of the
basement of the Shelby County Regional Forensic Center on or about April 2, 2004. They
were reportedly in an unlabeled evidence bag behind some boxes.

Levy said he is concerned about the obvious violation of the proper handling and
storage of autopsy evidence and materials, especially given recent allegations of
other missing evidence from the forensic center.

The missing evidence is body parts. Smith also allowed the professional
certification of the office to lapse. The highly secretive office was as sloppy and
unresponsive to the governor as it was to local media. And in Workman's case,
Although the recovered bullet could be the bullet that killed Lt. Oliver, Smith's
opinion that it is the fatal bullet to the exclusion of all others is speculative,
Levy wrote.

This is the medical examiner whom Gibbons and fellow prosecutors have relied on in
hundreds of close cases that are matters of life and death.

In Logan Young's case, U.S. District Judge Daniel Breen said last week he will rule
within 30 days on a defense motion to dismiss. Such motions are commonplace, but this
one plausibly argues that even if Young gave money to former high school football
coach Lynn Lang, it wasn't a federal crime because it would not have corrupted Lang in
the performance of his public duties as a football coach. Defense attorney Robert
Hutton says it is analogous to a parent paying a teacher to tutor a child as opposed
to bribing a teacher to give a child a high grade.

Breen has already affirmed an order of U.S. magistrate Diane Vescovo requiring the
NCAA and University of Tennessee football coach Phil Fulmer to produce tapes and
records. Federal prosecutors have appealed. The next court date is May 24th.

Meanwhile, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Circuit Court, university officials Gene Marsh and
Marie Robbins were dismissed from a related case because the plaintiffs decided they
were used and misled by the NCAA and the university in the investigation of
Alabama's football program. Marsh is a law professor and a member of the NCAA Division
I Committee on Infractions. Robbins is associate athletic director. The plaintiffs are
former Alabama football coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams.

Marsh says in an affidavit that the NCAA failed to share information they had
received

What Price is saying -- and what his QB says about him
   By Dennis Dodd

EL PASO, Texas -- Selected quotes by Mike Price and others on his situation.

On being fired at Alabama:

No one had my back ... I think the Board of Trustees were really in favor of me.
(Athletic director) Mal Moore was wonderful to me. The president said, 'Hey look, this
guy is going. If you don't like it get a new president.'

On being warned by Alabama officials about his conduct:

No one ever called me and said, 'Hey you can't be drinking in public.' They gave me
$1,000 a month to buy booze for alumni. That was an expense account.

On his conduct at Arety's Angels, the strip club in Pensacola, Fla.

The owner of the bar was an Auburn booster of all things. I didn't even get up ... I
just sat there at the end of the bar and was a gent -- not a gentleman -- but I wasn't
going (yelling) 'Hey, baby, come here.' I just sat there and talked to the bartender.
He was the only guy who knew who I was.

Did you ever regret taking the Alabama job?

That's the easy thing to say, I don't even want to admit that. That's like I said, 'I
wish (current Oregon State coach) Mike Riley would have taken that job.' I still think
it's a good football job.

On perspective:

It wasn't the best of times but I've had the best of times with my family and my job.
I saw my high school friend, and he's got prostate cancer and my good friend's wife
has ovarian cancer. I'm going, 'Holy Cow, I'm feeling sorry for myself? Get real
Price.'

[RollTideFan] Marsh, Robbins dropped from lawsuit

Marsh, Robbins dropped from lawsuit

04/22/04

MIKE PERRIN
News staff writer

University of Alabama officials Gene Marsh and Marie Robbins have been dismissed from
the Ronnie Cottrell-Ivy Williams lawsuit, according to papers filed in Tuscaloosa
Circuit Court on Wednesday.

Several weeks ago, (Cottrell attorney) Delaine Mountain and I met with our clients
and their wives and had an all-day meeting with Gene Marsh and Marie Robbins and their
attorney, Tommy Keene, attorney Thomas Gallion said. The meeting started off pretty
poorly, but at the end of the day we reached a tentative agreement, after hearing
their side of the story.

Although there are things they wish they had not done, the overall statements they
made were that they were duped and things were misrepresented to them by Mr.
(defendant/NCAA investigator Richard) Johanningmeier.

After hearing their story, I feel like - although there are some things I would not
have done - we're all human and they should not remain in this lawsuit. They did tell
the truth and they will tell more of the truth.

Marsh and Robbins would not comment on the lawsuit. However, Keene said, My reaction
is I think it's wonderful that my clients have been dismissed and that the plaintiffs
realized they did nothing wrong. I believe they were deservedly dismissed.

In an affidavit accompanying the motion to dismiss, Marsh said that he, as faculty
athletics representative, and Robbins, as a compliance officer, were concerned with
Cottrell's actions as an assistant coach because he had four secondary violations.
While no one secondary violation is a problem, multiple secondary violations can be
interpreted by the NCAA as one major violation. A major violation for a repeat
offender can be a devastating event.

Marsh also said Johanningmeier never informed the university that Tennessee head
football coach Phillip Fulmer was involved in the investigation of the Alabama
football program.

Based on this subsequent information, it appears to me that the NCAA had knowledge
about questions concerning Albert Means' recruitment and Harold James' recruitment
while these two young student athletes were still in high school, yet never shared
that knowledge with the University of Alabama, the affidavit says. Had the NCAA
given this information to the University of Alabama, we could have taken appropriate
action to prevent any improprieties on the part of the University of Alabama or its
boosters and would have prevented their being admitted to school and competing on our
football team.

Similarly, we were never given any information by the SEC office or SEC Commissioner
Roy Kramer about questions concerning the recruitment of Albert Means.

Season belonged to Antoine Pettway
From Way Downtown
Charlie Gasner
April 08, 2004

Antoine Pettway is an autograph machine. These days, he has to be, if he wants half a
chance at eating.

Most of Alabama's players were able to move around enough to get a soda and a hors
d'oeuvre at Tuesday night's Tide Pride/Tuscaloosa Tip-Off Club awards reception. Not
Pettway.

Chuck Davis had a handful of Sports Illustrated covers to sign, but Pettway was a
human Department of Motor Vehicles. Want to talk to the senior point guard? Get in
line. Wait.

Everyone and their adorable 5-year-old child had something for Pettway to autograph.
Basketballs. Pictures. Shoes. The guy was a leaf blower and a ratchet wrench away from
putting his signature on one of everything in your dad's garage.

You're the best point guard we've had here since T.R. Dunn, said one well-wisher.

I'm sure I'll see you here again as Alabama's coach, said another fan.

Coach Pettway? There's an interesting idea.

I don't know [about coaching], Pettway said. That's sort of stressful.

Point taken. Coaching - that's stressful. Tie game at Georgia with three seconds left?
That's easy. Down three at Arkansas on the last possession of regulation? Piece of
cake. Needing a basket to avoid elimination in the first round of the NCAA Tournament?
Cash money.

If this dude says he thinks something's stressful, you'd better believe him.

Alabama will be able to replace [Pettway] in the first 38 minutes of a game, Alabama
assistant coach Tom Asbury said. But in the last couple of minutes ... he's a special
guy when the game is on the line.

How close did Alabama come to missing the NCAA Tournament? At Georgia, the Bulldogs
and Crimson Tide scuffed their way out to 42 points each before Pettway stuck a
3-pointer in the waning seconds of the game.

At Arkansas, Pettway hit another 3 to send the game to overtime.

At Auburn, Emmett Thomas hit the free throws that put Alabama ahead, but it was
Pettway's floater on the previous possession that put Thomas in position to take the
lead.

How close did Alabama come to a one-and-done NCAA Tournament? With the game almost
over and the shot clock off, Pettway took the ball into the lane, sidestepped a few
Southern Illinois defenders and threw up a teardrop six-footer that kept the season
going.

It'll go down in history as Alabama's first Elite Eight run. But without Pettway, it's
probably a field-of-65 run. Or an NIT run. So on one hand, Alabama only loses one
starter this year. On the other, he just happens to be the heart of the team.

There's no replacing Antoine, Davis said. He's done so much. Our guys have to step
up and take command of the team like he's done these past four years.

Pettway's time in a Crimson Tide uniform is up. After four years in college, he's
graduating with a degree in health care management in May. But if he has it his way,
he won't be putting that degree to use anytime soon.

I'll weigh my options, Pettway said. I want to play professionally.

What kind of professional league would pick up a basketball player who's listed very
generously at 6 feet tall, an outside shooter whose 3-point shot looks like a
gymnastics routine, and a point guard who doesn't throw flashy behind-the-back passes
or slam highlight-reel dunks?

The NBA, I hope, Pettway said.

So what if Pettway's name doesn't pop up on the mock drafts? No one thought he could
play college ball, either. Alabama coach Mark Gottfried only discovered Pettway when
he went to check out another player. He didn't have a scholarship for Pettway, but
Pettway walked on for a year and earned a scholarship anyway.

He made a choice to come to Alabama and was determined to prove to our staff and
everybody that he belonged there, Gottfried said. And he quickly did that.

He isn't flashy, but he's as steady as they come - he averaged just 1.5 turnovers in
33 minutes per game this year. His assist-to-turnover ratio was the best in the SEC.

His 3-point shot won't win any awards for form, but basketball players aren't scored
on form. All that matters is he hit 39.1 percent of those trifectas in the past four
years, good for sixth on the school's all-time list.

He's probably closer to 5 feet 10 inches than 6 feet tall, but it's not as if he'll be
asked to guard Yao Ming.

After an NCAA Tournament win, Gottfried called Pettway The Little Engine That Could.
Pettway still thinks he can.

Would you bet against him?

Mission to save Shula impossible

04/03/04

From time to time, I dabble in another life as a secret agent. The following happened
to me earlier this week. I went to the airport, retrieved a small tape and folder out
of a locker, found an available room near the airline's private lounges and played
the following audio:

Good morning, Mr. Finebaum. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to help
save and rehabilitate this man's career. The person in question is Mike Shula, the
38-year-old head football coach at the University of Alabama. Until recently, he was
living a reasonably charmed life. That has changed.

Although he had a miserable football season -- the Alabama record was 4-9 including
losses to Northern Illinois and Hawaii -- he had a strong recruiting class. Things
were going along swimmingly until it was reported that he had changed the name of a
little-known spring football award which honored commitment to excellence.

It had been named after Sylvester Croom, who played at Alabama and was runner-up to
Shula last spring for the head coaching position. However, since Croom ultimately was
chosen at Mississippi State, Shula decided to change the name of the award.

The rationale, according to Minister of Information Larry White, was Shula didn't feel
it was appropriate to honor a rival coach in the same conference even though the
Bulldogs were 2-10 in 2003, lost to the Tide 38-0, have finished last in the SEC West
three consecutive years (combined conference record during this time is 3-21) and are
likely to get slammed by the NCAA.

Currently, Shula is on a cruise ship (good timing) in the Caribbean -- I think the
name of the ocean liner is called the Tide-tanic. While Shula is out to sea, the
reaction back on the mainland toward him has been that he missed the boat. In addition
to being a great player at Alabama, Croom also coached for Bear Bryant and Ray Perkins
and his late father was the team chaplain for both men.

Mr. Finebaum, your mission is to undo the damage created by Shula. The general opinion
is the move by Shula looks petty, childish, mean-spirited, cheesy, insecure,
bone-headed and just plain stupid. And these are some of the positive things being
said.

What you need to do is come up with a solution and do so before his ship reaches shore
later in the weekend. There are several options laid out here for your examination.

One option is to have Shula say it was all a misunderstanding. Perhaps, even say it
was an April Fool's joke that went askew. OK, forget that one. Do what the politicians
do and blame it on one of his minions or an assistant coach -- either Joe Kines or
Dave Radar. Humiliate them publicly and after they personally apologize to coach
Croom, fire them from your staff. Immediately restore the name back to the award. End
of story. This is what we call addition by subtraction.

Another option is to ignore the whole thing. After all, it's only a spring football
award that outside of a few players, the average fan has never heard of. Remind people
of Alabama's great football tradition -- 12

national championships, etc. Talk about the class this program exudes. It would only
become an issue if Mississippi State were to somehow upset Alabama Nov. 6 in
Tuscaloosa and there is absolutely no chance of that happening -- on second thought,
scratch that plan.

Option three is to tell the former players who -- along with the news media -- are
doing most of the whining to shut up and stick it. Threaten the media's press passes
this year (with some great home games including Utah State, Ole Miss, Western
Carolina, Southern Miss) and say anyone else who raises this issue will no longer get
the free cold hot dogs and warm cold drinks in the press box.

Honestly, there really aren't any good options. They don't call this unit MI (Mission
Impossible) because we're in charge of changing light bulbs. Make the best of it.
Improvise if you must and only take the doomsday approach -- in other words, retain
the services of Tommy Gallion -- if your life depends on it.

As always, should you or any member of your team be caught or killed, the secretary
will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This tape will self-destruct in five
seconds. Good luck. You'll need it!

Croom Reacts to Alabama Award Name Change
By Gene Swindoll
Date: Apr 1, 2004

Coach Croom talked extensively to the media about Alabama head football coach Mike
Shula changing the name of the Alabama spring football award named after him.

What is your reaction to Alabama's Mike Shula taking your name off the Alabama spring
football award?
I want to make it perfectly clear that I have no animosity toward Coach (Mike) Shula.
(However) to say I was not disappointed would be lying. Otherwise, if I had known
about it previously, I would probably not have even answered the question. But, to
answer it honestly, I was disappointed. But, that is the head coach's prerogative. Now
that I have gotten over my initial shock of it, we move on. The reality of it is the
name of awards change year in and year out. I understand that. The important thing to
me is that what the University of Alabama meant to me will always mean that to me. The
important thing is the guys that I played with, the guys that I played against, they
know how I played the game and how much I cared about them. And I feel they cared
about me the same way. And they know how much pride I took in wearing that uniform.
Nothing will ever change that.

How did you find out about the decision?
When I was asked a question out here at practice Tuesday evening.

The award was named after you the player, not the coach.
The spring awards, even though the the public wasn't award of them, have always meant
a great deal to all the players. I remember when I was playing they had the Billy
Nabors Most Improved Offensive Lineman Award. I wanted it every spring because it was
named after a great player there. To get any kind of recognition from Coach Bryant and
his staff meant a great deal to us as players. I idolized those guys when I was there.
To have an award like that named after me, yeah, it meant a great deal to me. It means
that the efforts that I put in trying to be a team player in what I contributed there
was noticed by the coaching staff and the other people that were involved in putting
my name on that. It meant a lot to me when I was playing and means a lot to me now.
The greatest honor that I have gotten or will even get was being voted captain my
senior year. Nothing can ever surpass that for me, because it came from the players
and the men that I played with.

Don't you wish they had given you a courteous heads up?
I would have liked to have known because I would have had a better answer to that
question when he came to me (laugh). We could have avoided all of this (laugh).

Have you spoken to any of the Alabama people since this has happened?
I have talked to some people. I had a call today from Mal Moore at about the middle
of the day. He called to say that they had changed some awards. He and I talked about
it. Just like I told you, when I was asked the question, I was caught off guard. To
have answered it any other way would have been an out and out lie. I had to answer the
question as truthful as I possibly could.

Why do you think they removed your name from the award?
The only thing that I have heard is that they felt like it was not good having an
award named after an opposing head coach. My feeling is the award was named after a
former player, not after an opposing head coach.

[RollTideFan] Young's name still on Bryant center room

Young's name still on Bryant center room

04/01/04

Disassociated University of Alabama booster Logan Young still has a room named after
him at the university's Bryant Conference Center.

Young was one of three UA boosters disassociated from the university as part of the
NCAA sanctions in February of 2002. UA Athletics Director Mal Moore said the room was
named for Young long before the sanctions were placed on the university.

To be truthful, I know there is a room named after Logan but it was done way back,
Moore said. That has no effect on the NCAA ruling. His disassociation was from that
point forward.

Young is not allowed to contribute money to the university and the Tide Pride program
or buy season tickets from the university.

Moore said he was not sure how much Young contributed during the building of the
facility but believes it was right at the end of Coach (Paul) Bryant's career when he
made that contribution. Bryant retired after the 1982 season.

The room is one of several small conference rooms at the Bryant Conference Center. The
center is a division of the UA's College of Continuing Studies.

Make Them Eat Their Words

March 24, 2004

So here we are.

We’ve just beaten a number one seed. A team that was near perfect during the regular
season. A team that only lost one game all year…before they met us. A team that
everyone feared and called “unbeatable”. We’ve defied the odds and we’ve known all
along that we are capable of overcoming anyone in college basketball. Yet, the judges
aren’t impressed.

Instead of treating us with a little more respect, what do they do? They overlook us.
Same old, same old. It’s nothing new.

“What a great matchup Syracuse and UConn will make in the Elite Eight!” That’s what
we’ve heard all week. So what is it we have to do in order to prove to the entire
nation that we are for real? Keep on winning. Let ‘em talk about Syracuse. Let ‘em.
All those who want to overlook us, go right ahead. If we keep winning, nobody will
care who said what. I recall a large amount of people saying we had NO CHANCE against
Stanford. So the questioning, it’s nothing new to us.

I’ve also heard time and time again this week from big-name college basketball
analysts including Dick Vitale and Digger Phelps that Alabama is a weak 3-point
shooting team and Cuse’s zone defense would slaughter us…what?! You know what, don’t
even say anything. Just let them talk all they want, and if they want to doubt the
rising Tide, be my guest.

This team knows what we’re about. We know after beating a team like Stanford, an
“unbeatable” team, we can compete with ANYBODY, including the defending national
champs. It’s now just a matter of showing everyone that we can do it.

Last week’s win vs. Stanford was huge, but it is important what we do with it. We need
to build off of that win with a solid performance Thursday night against the
Orangemen. We’ve beaten the “unbeatable”, so from here on out, no excuses. Just play.
And let them doubt us all they want. All that matters is the end result.

Let’s go out and prove them wrong. Make them eat their words.

Price's suit says UA's Witt would fire him or quit

03/23/04
MIKE BOLTON
News staff writer

University of Alabama President Robert Witt used the threat of his resignation to
intimidate the UA System Board of Trustees into supporting his intention to fire head
football coach Mike Price, a new lawsuit filed by Price alleges.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court, names Witt as the sole
defendant and accuses him of fraud and misrepresentation in firing Price in May.

The lawsuit, which asks for no specific amount of damages, claims Witt acted outside
of his capacity as university president. A judge last year dismissed an earlier
lawsuit filed by Price that alleged UA and Witt, in his official capacity, illegally
fired Price. An appeal of that dismissal is before the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Price was fired after allegations surfaced of his visiting a strip club and drinking
heavily in Pensacola while attending a golf tournament in April.

Price's attorney, Steve Heninger, said he had met with counsel for Witt to try to
settle the case out of court, but Witt's attorneys refused.

Witt attorney Stan Starnes said in a written statement Monday that the new lawsuit has
no merit. He also noted the dismissal of the previous lawsuit.

We regret that Mike Price refuses to accept responsibility for his admitted
misbehavior and poor judgment in Pensacola last year. One would think that he would
want to move on and focus on his new head coaching job. Instead, he has chosen to
pursue another lawsuit which will result in nothing more than continued attention for
his embarrassing conduct last April.

Price, who is currently head football coach at the University of Texas-El Paso, also
has a pending libel lawsuit against Sports Illustrated for an article detailing his
actions in Pensacola.

Price's new suit against Witt claims that when Witt realized he did not have the
support of Athletics Director Mal Moore or a consensus of the board to fire Price, he
resorted to intimidation by saying he would resign if he didn't get support. That
intimidation, the suit claims, put Witt outside the scope of his employment.

The suit claims Witt walked into a meeting with the board on the day Price was fired
with instructions that the board would either support him in his firing of Price or he
would submit his own resignation.

The suit also claims Witt showed UA board members a presentation depicting Price
dressed as a pimp, which maliciously showed Price in a false light.

`Priceless' parody:

The parody of a television commercial for MasterCard showed Price with two women as
escorts and showed a price tag of $350. The parody, a copy of which was turned over to
Heninger by university counsel, read: Failing to give a tip for services then having
your business credit card stolen after breakfast by hookers who run up an enormous
tab: Priceless.

The lawsuit claims that depiction was a knowing misrepresentation of the facts of the
Pensacola trip.

Heninger acknowledged in an interview that Witt may have presented the parody to board
members as an example of material circulating on the Internet and how the university's
image was being damaged.

Starnes said the material was shown to document the negative publicity generated by
Coach Price's exceptionally bad judgment.

The suit also claims Witt refused to allow Price to tell his side of the story to the
media or the board of trustees, and that he was fired without the board ever hearing
the truth.

Starnes said Witt fired Price based on Price's own admitted conduct in Pensacola.
Mike Price's latest lawsuit merely reinforces the correctness of Dr. Witt's
decision, Starnes said.

[RollTideFan] The dream lives for Antoine Pettway

2004-03-20 Thread kr10
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/collegesports/2001883746_alabama20.html

The dream lives for Antoine Pettway

By Les Carpenter
Seattle Times staff reporter

Sherry Brooks tried to be nice, but she had a CPR class to teach after all. And one of
her students at the Montgomery, Ala., Red Cross Center kept pleading with her to pull
the instructional tapes from the television on Thursday afternoon just so he could
watch a basketball game?

Well, he would just have to wait.

My son is playing in that game, said Joseph Pettway Jr.

So Brooks rearranged her breaks, giving Pettway two chances to watch the grainy images
flickering from across the country. The first time, Antoine Pettway's Alabama was
beating Southern Illinois by nearly 10 points. The next time, his son was being mobbed
by his teammates, the game was just over, the announcers were saying ... and Alabama
moves on to play Stanford.

Well, he must have done it again, Joseph said.

Forgive Sherry Brooks if she didn't know the story of Antoine Pettway and a dream. How
could she possibly understand that the son of the man in her CPR class longed to play
basketball at Alabama so much that his father pulled all his money together and paid
for a year of college just so his child could walk on the basketball team?

Then not only did Antoine make the team, he became its starting point guard, the
leader. The one who kept making the most amazing shots, like the last-second basket to
win the SEC championship and the three-pointer that beat Georgia. And don't forget the
three that sent the game at Arkansas into overtime.

And on Thursday afternoon Antoine Pettway, in his senior year, did it again. He did it
with the shot Joseph had taught him — a running one-hander that just floated over two
Southern Illinois defenders. They used to call it the runner.

You're a little guy, and if you go inside with the big men, you've got to be able to
put a shot over them, Joseph always said.

Thursday, his son delivered the NCAA tournament's first fantastic finish as Alabama
won 65-64, and Joseph Pettway saw none of it because for once he was thinking ahead.
He's the basketball coach and an assistant principal at Keith High School in Orrville,
Ala., and the state is demanding that all the teachers become CPR certified by next
year. Since coaches are always doing things at the last minute, Joseph thought he
would take a training course. This way, he could come back to school and certify other
coaches himself.

He never figured the classes would conflict with the NCAA tournament. But there he
was, Thursday, in the third of four training sessions, watching while Brooks showed
them the right way to tip back a head and open breathing passages.

He was going to bring a radio with a little earpiece so he could at least listen to
the game, but he only had a pair of giant headphones. And he didn't think Brooks would
think too kindly of a student sitting in her class wearing a pair of giant headphones.

Instead, he suffered.

After the game Thursday, Antoine was asked to name the person who had the biggest
influence in his life.

My father, he replied.

Joseph did everything for the boy. At age 12, Antoine came to live with his father, a
one-time junior college basketball player who later graduated from Alabama with a
degree in physical education. From the beginning, Joseph could see his son loved the
game, shooting baskets for hours on the empty courts. At night, they would stay up for
hours at night talking nothing but basketball.

When Antoine went to high school, he played for Joseph, first at Keith, then later at
Wilcox Central in nearby Alberta when Joseph took the coaching job there. Antoine,
despite being just 6 feet, was good and colleges noticed. Jacksonville State,
Louisiana Tech, Alabama State and Alabama AM all offered scholarships.

But he wanted Alabama, even if Alabama barely knew he existed. By the time Tide coach
Mark Gottfried saw him in a state tournament, Alabama had already filled its
scholarships.

You can walk on, Gottfried said, leaving open the chance Antoine could get a full
ride the next year.

His father frowned. It seemed like such a longshot. Antoine had guarantees from the
other schools. Maybe he should take one of those. Then he saw the hope on his child's
face.

Sometimes when you get older you forget about the dreams you had, he said.
Sometimes it takes a 17-year-old to remind you of your dreams.

Joseph pulled out his checkbook, and the rest is Alabama history.

Those coaches, they measure recruits with tape measures too much, and they never
measure the one thing that matters most — their heart, Joseph Pettway said.

Finally they measured Antoine Pettway's. The dream lives for one more day.

[RollTideFan] Rolling along

2004-03-16 Thread kr10

Rolling along
Shula enjoying Crimson Tide's strangely quiet offseason

You wonder why some of the fine football coaches, particularly at Alabama, can't get
their seasons right. Mike Shula Co. got a jump on March Madness that would make
Dickie V proud, kicking off spring practice in the midst of winter -- Feb. 21, to be
precise.

No one is alleging any monkey business with the rules, a welcome relief for Alabama.
Shula is just cramming in the allotted 15 days of drills before the start of spring
break. Give him credit for holding off until Saturday, the official arrival of spring,
to close out drills with the annual A-Day game.

If this is as controversial as Shula gets, folks in most precincts would be willing
line up to elect him governor. The Bama faithful are dying for a good ol' boring
coach. They're tired of the NCAA gumshoes lurking around Tuscaloosa. They're tired of
the lawsuits and headline-grabbing attorneys. Tired of coaches acting like frat boys.

Since Paul Bear'' Bryant's last season in 1982, Alabama is on its seventh head coach.
The only one fully embraced, Gene Stallings, won a national championship but also
steered the program onto its first NCAA probation. And when you're on a third coach in
15 months, it might explain why your storied program seems to be hyperventilating.

So this spring practice, his first since being hired last May, Shula is bent on
calming things down. The offense and defense installed on the run before last season
are being honed in a relaxed setting. No fresh wrinkles. The coaching staff is on the
field intact, with the exception of the hiring of strength and conditioning coach Kent
Johnston.

Miami transfer Marc Gullion is getting a chance to shine while starter Brodie Croyle
remains limited following offseason shoulder surgery, but there's no suggestion of a
quarterback controversy. Shula is more concerned with overall depth coming off a 4-9
season. Because of sanctions, Alabama won't have the full complement of 85
scholarships until the 2005 season. So Shula talks of possibly playing 10 true
freshmen this fall, double the number from last season, which speaks to the quality of
his first recruiting class and the lack of depth.

It's important to bring some continuity whether it's the NFL or college football, but
probably so much more here at Alabama because of what has happened,'' said Shula, the
youngest of Hall of Fame coach Don's offspring. Just to have everyone catch their
breath is nice. We talked to our players after the last game last year, talking about
what has gone on in their lives and how much change there has been in the last 365
days.

I told them, 'We want to make it awful boring around here compared to what you have
been used to.'

If you follow Alabama football, the program has long been embroiled in a juicy soap
opera, or so it seems. The latest episode began with Dennis Franchione's flight for
Texas AM after the 2002 season, frustrated by NCAA sanctions leftover from the Mike
DuBose era. Mike Price was lured from Washington State but never coached a down. Price
was run off last May for embarrassing the university by allegedly cavorting with
dancers at a Florida strip joint.

Granted, some have argued it was a reach hiring Shula, who had no head coaching
experience. Then again, this was a job that cried out for an Alabama guy, a
straight-laced soother. He fit the bill much like Butch Davis did at the University of
Miami, where he took over sans head coaching experience as the NCAA was slapping the
program around.

The comparison is not lost on Shula, who kept track of the Miami program while an NFL
assistant. Davis and Shula's older brother David both coached on Jimmy Johnson's staff
in Dallas.

If the Miami example holds true, Shula won't be an overnight miracle worker. It likely
will take three or four years before the depth and talent level is rebuilt. As Larry
Coker well knows, Davis bolted for the NFL before Miami played again for another
national title.

Shula can take solace in the NCAA's recent decision not to levy additional sanctions
against Alabama, based on unresolved lawsuits that are floating around. If the natives
stay patient, the 38-year-old may hang around long enough to bring the stability
lacking since Bryant stepped aside.

When I was considering this job and talking to my wife [Shari],'' Shula recalled,
one of the things we talked about was, 'You don't go to Alabama for a stepping stone.
You go there and plan on being there.' I said, 'Now, if we go, we're going to go.' And
she was all gung-ho. That is how we feel about this place. None of us can predict the
future or what is going to happen, but this feels like home.''

At least for now.

FULMER'S RECORDS SUBJECT TO SUBPOENA
Judge grants right to Logan Young's legal team.

JOHN BRANSTON
A federal judge has granted football booster Logan Young the right to subpoena
materials from University of Tennessee football coach Philip Fulmer and the NCAA about
the NCAA investigation of Young. U.S. Magistrate Judge Diane Vescovo denied the
government’s request to keep the materials from Young and his attorneys. Young, a
wealthy Memphis businessman, faces trial May 3rd on charges of conspiracy and hiding
bank withdrawals the government believes were used to pay $150,000 to former high
school football coach Lynn Lang to send star lineman Albert Means to Alabama. Fulmer
and the NCAA have until April 2nd to produce the materials. Young’s attorneys believe
the government’s case closely tracks the NCAA investigation of Young and the Alabama
football program. The materials focus on interviews with Tom Culpepper, an Alabama
booster who may be called as a witness by the government. Fulmer secretly taped 90
minutes of a meeting he had with Culpepper. Fulmer’s role as a confidential source for
the NCAA against Alabama came out earlier this year. The defense has indicated it may
call Fulmer as a witness and needs his notes and tapes to “refresh his recollection,”
according to court filings. The NCAA materials include records of at least six
meetings with Lang’s assistant, Milton Kirk, according to court papers. Lang and Kirk
have pleaded guilty. Lang has not been sentenced and is expected to testify at Young’s
trial for the government. Fulmer and the NCAA are not parties to the case.

When the cheering stopped

03/06/04
By MIKE MARSHALL
Times Staff Writer [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Kenneth Smith reflects on ex-football star son, Vols-Tide bitterness

SOUTH PITTSBURG, Tenn. - In the den of his concrete-block house on a hill, serenaded
by the Jack Russell terrier yapping in the kitchen, Kenneth Smith slides the highlight
tape into his videocassette recorder.

The tape is a collection of 10-year-old clips made in high school football stadiums in
North Alabama and southern Middle Tennessee. The star is a 6-foot-7 kid wearing a
black-and-white uniform and a flattop haircut.

On these fields, Kenneth Smith's eldest child and only son, Kenny, became one of the
most coveted football recruits ever in Alabama's Jackson County. At his peak, Kenny
Smith weighed 285 pounds and ran fast enough to chase down running backs half his size.

He was a free spirit who devoted much of his high school summers to eating Big Bubba
burgers at the Dairy Bar and jumping off the Stevenson Bridge, a 55-foot drop into the
Tennessee River. In his more serious moments, he dreamed of playing tight end or
defensive end in the National Football League.

His father's highlight tape and a scrapbook are all that's left of Kenny Smith's
stardom at North Jackson High in Stevenson. His football career essentially ended at
the University of Tennessee, one of two major colleges he signed with after high
school.

In September 1998, weeks before his 22nd birthday, Kenny Smith quit the Tennessee
football team. With a bad shoulder and a bad taste for Southeastern Conference
football, he returned to his family's home on Hamilton Avenue in South Pittsburg.

He considered playing at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, but enrolled at
Delta State University in Mississippi, a member of the NCAA's Division II. After two
semesters there, he left without ever putting on a uniform again.

But Kenny Smith's playing career was resurrected during the NCAA's recent
investigation of the University of Alabama football program. Alabama's recruitment of
Smith and at least two other prospects led to five years of probation and two years of
sanctions, including bowl bans and scholarship reductions. [...]

Some notable members of the UA BOT are hopping mad right now...
The more that comes out of Memphis...the more it smacks of a NCAAzi railroad job. If
the LY case is thrown out ( I'm hearing it will be less than a month)and the
Phaatz / Culpepper tape has truly vanished ( the Culpepper tape was considered as
corroborating evidence)... The NCAA case on major infractions will then be completedly
without merit.

In that event, pressure will be placed on Dr. Witt to demand reparations from the
NCAAzi's (and SEC)... otherwise all Hell will break loose (aka Robert Cunningham's
return to Indianapolis , Congressional hearing).

A proposed settlement would be ending the probation period on time served, immediate
return to 85 grants by compensation of 12 additional scholarships (maybe 6 additional
JC's over each of next 2 years) and immediate release of all bowl and TV revenue
sharing from the SEC(currently withheld for 2 more years). They do this and UA agrees
not to pursue other legal remedies for loss of revenue ($50 Mil).

My source hasn't been wrong yetI don't think he will be this time either.

Ga. coach's class deemed too easy

By LORI JOHNSTON
The Associated Press
3/4/2004, 9:03 a.m. CT

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Talk about a slam dunk.

Most college students dream of getting a final exam with questions such as: How many
points is a 3-pointer worth?

That was among the questions on basic basketball knowledge on the final exam — and
only test — in Georgia assistant basketball coach Jim Harrick Jr.'s Coaching
Principles and Strategies of Basketball class in 2001.

The 20-question test and transcripts of interviews with some of the students in
Harrick's class were among 1,500 pages of documents released Wednesday by the
university in its response to the NCAA about rules violations in the basketball
program.

The university agreed with the NCAA's findings, which included violations of academic
fraud and improper benefits.

Harrick's father, Jim Sr., was suspended, then resigned as coach. The younger Harrick
lost his job as an assistant, and the school kept the team out of the Southeastern
Conference and NCAA tournaments.

The NCAA concluded Harrick Jr. fraudulently awarded grades of A to three men's
basketball student-athletes enrolled in the course he taught in 2001, allowing them
to miss class and tests. Harrick Jr. also allegedly provided an extra benefit to
student athletes by the manner in which he conducted the course, the NCAA found.

An attorney for the Harricks said Wednesday that Harrick Jr. would not comment. A
federal lawsuit filed last week accuses university officials and others of defamation.

The names of Harrick's students who were interviewed were blacked out in the papers.

All the students in the class were given an A grade, according to the documents.

Affidavit: Analyst wanted revenge

02/27/04
DOUG SEGREST
News staff writer

An affidavit taken in a defamation and libel case against the NCAA alleges a
recruiting analyst conspired to damage the Alabama football program out of vengeance.

The affidavit is part of pre-trial discovery by attorney Thomas Gallion, who
represents former Crimson Tide assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams in a
civil suit against the NCAA.

The source of the affidavit, Clark Charles Branch, is a former work associate of Tom
Culpepper, a local recruiting analyst. Culpepper was identified in court documents as
a secret witness in the NCAA's investigation of Crimson Tide recruiting.

That investigation landed Alabama on probation in 2002 and cost the school 21
scholarships and two potential postseason appearances.

In the affidavit, Branch said Culpepper expressed contempt for former Alabama
recruiting coordinator Cottrell and Memphis booster Logan Young. Culpepper blamed
Young's influence for the loss of his job as a television analyst for a now-defunct
Birmingham-based cable sports station.

Branch said that on at least six occasions in 2001, he heard Culpepper say I'll do
whatever it takes to see Cottrell and Young fall as a result of the NCAA
investigation.

The affidavit said Culpepper worked in concert with Rich Johanningmeier, the NCAA
enforcement representative who investigated Alabama. At one point, Culpepper told
Branch he and Johanningmeier were worried that the case against Alabama would unravel
unless someone went on the record.

Branch said Culpepper claimed he encouraged Memphis high school coach Milton Kirk to
go public with allegations of wrongdoing against Alabama. Kirk was an assistant coach
during Alabama's recruitment of Memphis blue-chip prospect Albert Means, a player the
NCAA said signed with Alabama only after Young paid $115,000.

Branch said he believed Culpepper had inside information from the NCAA because he
accurately predicted Alabama would be punished severely by the NCAA even before the
case reached its conclusion.

Culpepper, a Shelby County resident, said Thursday that he could not respond to the
allegations due to a standing protective order barring comment in the suit brought
against the NCAA by Cottrell and Williams.

Culpepper is included as a defendant in the suit. Both Cottrell and Williams claim
they have not been able to get Division I-A jobs since leaving Alabama because of the
damage inflicted on them by the NCAA's investigation.

A recent published transcript of Alabama's appearance before the NCAA Committee on
Infractions showed both Cottrell and Williams were discussed at the November 2001
hearing.

NCAA spokesman Wally Renfro said he would not rehash the transcript. But Renfro, who
serves as NCAA President Myles Brand's senior adviser, said the NCAA's treatment of
the two coaches is obvious in the transcript.

Ivy Williams wasn't alluded to in terms of any allegations, Renfro said. All but
one of the allegations against Ronnie Cot trell were self-reported by the institution,
not the NCAA, and were ones he acknowledged.

Renfro noted that an NCAA charge of unethical behavior against Cottrell was argued and
eventually dismissed.

I think you can make a strong argument that publishing the transcript does far more
damage to their (Cottrell and Williams') case than ours, Renfro said.

Renfro will represent the NCAA in a panel discussion Sunday morning when ESPN
broadcasts an Outside the Lines episode that explores the rift between Alabama and
Tennessee over the NCAA investigation.

[RollTideFan] Student section to expand by 872

Student section to expand by 872
By Caitlin Tudzin
Senior Staff Reporter
February 12, 2004

In an effort to keep up with the growing student population, UA officials have added
872 seats to the student section at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The current number of seats offered to students is 11,287, which was the amount
designated for the section in 1998. The entire south end zone will now be reserved for
students.

Athletics director Mal Moore said requests from students who were unable to get
tickets, as well as the projected increase in student population, led the athletics
department to designate more student seating.

We anticipate 1,000 to 1,500 more students next year, he said. That and the demand
of students already here led us to decide we wanted more students to have the
opportunity to get tickets.

Moore said he does not believe ticket prices will go up from $5 at this time, though
it is a possibility that it could happen someday.

He said the 872 seats will be student-designated until the stadium is expanded in a
couple of years, a move Moore predicts will add about 7,000 to 10,000 seats.

I'm pleased and thrilled the student body is growing and pleased that we get great
support from our students because that's so important, he said.

SGA President Katie Boyd said several students came to her to voice their concerns
about the effect a growing population would have on football ticket availability. Boyd
said since the stadium already seems crowded in the student section, it only made
sense to increase the amount of space designated for students.

There are 20,333 students on campus, and many times we have students' guests, she
said. It's always packed and after Aug. 1, some students even get turned away from
buying tickets.

Boyd said as long as the demand remains for these seats, they will continue to be
blocked off for students. She said the placement of the new student section is great
because it places fans closer to the game.

I think the neatest thing is that it's the front section across the end zone, right
where the football players run out, she said.

Boyd said Moore and Rhoda Vaughn, director of the athletics ticket office, were both
helpful in reaching student demands and putting into place a plan for the new seating
arrangement. Boyd said the next step is to make sure seating increases as enrollment
increases.

Now we will work on getting a plan in place so that in the future the number of seats
available to students will grow with attendance, she said.

Bryan Grimes, a sophomore finance major, said he thinks it is great the University is
making more room for students, since the section is already cramped.

It will be a good thing that there's more seats and tickets, because it will get more
people out to the games, he said. I knew people who couldn't get student tickets
last year, and tickets in other sections are too expensive.

Emily Burgio, a sophomore nursing major, said she agrees the addition is definitely a
good thing for students.

Games are so crowded, you have to get there two to three hours before it starts to
even be able to see something, she said. Right now, the student section is
definitely too crowded.

Burgio said she thinks the amount of seats sounds good right now, but she added that
taking too many seats away from other sections will take away seats from sections with
pricier tickets, resulting in less money for the University.

Ray Keller sez Hi!

http://www.al.com/printer/printer.ssf?/base/sports/1075718829304281.xml

Ex-UA booster files suit, says NCAA defamed him

02/02/04
DOUG SEGREST
News staff writer

Former University of Alabama booster Ray Keller has filed a defamation suit against
the NCAA seeking unspecified damages.

Attorneys for Keller filed the suit in Jackson County court Friday afternoon. The suit
said Keller was a private figure who was defamed, slandered and libeled by the NCAA
when he was accused of being a rogue Alabama booster two years ago.

This case is completely about the failure, on two parts, of the NCAA, said Archie
Lamb, Keller's Birmingham attorney. Clearly, these people decided that what they
wanted was a truth that would be without any further corroboration.

And because of their complete lack of responsibility toward anyone, they called my
client (a rogue booster) without any proof.

Keller, a Jackson County timber man, claims in the suit he has been publicly shamed by
the NCAA's charges and has seen his business suffer dramatically.

Keller lost out on a real estate deal valued at $1 million or more and was denied an
opportunity to become a board member of the North Jackson Bank due to defamation, the
suit claims. Keller has also incurred legal fees of $15,000.

Lamb said the NCAA essentially ignored the requests.

The Keller suit is not connected to other suits spinning off from the NCAA's
investigation of the Alabama football program - notably a defamation suit filed by
former Tide assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams in Tuscaloosa.

Lamb said the cases are different and will be pursued differently.

I think one of the things we're trying to do is make sure this case remains on
point, Lamb said Sunday. That point is: They committed an illegal act by libeling
and slandering Ray.

In addition to the NCAA, the suit names NCAA Executive Director Myles Brand, former
Executive Director Cedric Dempsey, NCAA Committee on Infractions Chairman Thomas
Yeager, NCAA investigator Rich Johanningmeier, former NCAA media relations specialists
Jane Jankowski and Laronica Conway and recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper.

The defendants have 30 days upon receiving notice of the complaint to respond.

The suit claims the NCAA had information from Keller and other witnesses that
directly contradicted information that was dispersed in a Feb. 1, 2002 press
conference announcing penalties against Alabama due, in part, to the recruitment of
former North Jackson standout defensive lineman Kenny Smith.

The suit claims that Keller's injuries are ongoing, because the charges remain on the
NCAA's Web site.

The NCAA claimed that Keller, Memphis businessman Logan Young and Chattanooga car
salesman Wendell Smith conspired to entice Kenny Smith into signing a letter of intent
with Alabama.

Specifically, the NCAA said Keller told Smith's father he knew of someone who could
help the player if he signed with Alabama. The NCAA also said Keller visited the
Smiths at their home in an effort to recruit the young man and made at least four
cash payments of $100 each to the prospect.

In the announcement of findings against Alabama and the boosters, the NCAA's Yeager
used strong language in describing Keller as a pariah who brought unprecedented
disgrace to the Crimson Tide football program for his part in a completely sordid
affair.

Don Word, a Scottsboro attorney and Lamb's co-counsel in the suit, wrote the NCAA
twice in the last year. The NCAA's findings against Keller, said the letter, were
false and without merit and ... based on a flawed, unprofessional and conspiratorial
investigation.

The letter requests a dialogue to resolve the issues.

BREAKING NEWS: Gallion: Justice, FBI conspired with NCAA to get Alabama

From combined reports
January 27, 2004

Email this story.

BIRMINGHAM | A lawyer suing the NCAA over its investigation of Alabama football claims
the Justice Department and the FBI wrongly conspired with the sanctioning body to
wreck the Crimson Tide program.

Tommy Gallion, a University of Alabama graduate representing former Tide assistant
coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams, said Congress should investigate the role of
the government, which he accused of “highly unethical behavior.”

“They took over [an NCAA investigation] and went after the University of Alabama
football program, with federal tax money footing the bill,” Gallion said.

The Justice Department did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday, when
Gallion’s comments were first reported.

Federal prosecutors in Memphis, Tenn., began investigating Alabama’s recruitment of
Albert Means amid published reports that his high school coach took thousands of
dollars to steer him toward Alabama.

Two football coaches from Memphis have pleaded guilty to federal charges, and former
Alabama booster Logan Young of Memphis is awaiting trial on conspiracy charges.
Alabama was placed on probation.

Young has pleaded innocent, and Gallion said he believes him.

Gallion contends the NCAA was out to get Alabama and ignored violations at the
University of Tennessee in exchange for information from Vols coach Phillip Fulmer.

Cottrell and Williams are former UA assistants who sued the NCAA claiming they were
wrongly implicated in rules violations.

The Tuscaloosa News is staffing Gallion’s 1 p.m. news conference, and will update this
story throughout the day.

Gallion scoring points against Fulmer, NCAA

01/27/04

Enough already. Stop this craziness. Does it really matter?

That is a small but representative sampling of recent e-mails on a column about
Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer's part-time job as a two-bit hustling
detective and how it relates to the NCAA's shattering judgment on Alabama, which came
almost two years ago.

Well, I think it does matter. I think it matters because even though Alabama was
clearly in the wrong and had serious problems in its program, which needed to be and
were being rectified, the process used against the school was unscrupulous and
contaminated and should never be applied again.

And while others continue to rail on Montgomery attorney Tommy Gallion, his case
against the NCAA and subsequent information being obtained through the criminal case
in Memphis, his stand will likely help others down the road even though it's not
likely to help Alabama.

For too long, the NCAA's enforcement staff, as well as the Committee on Infractions,
has been allowed to rule college athletics with a selective process and an iron fist.
The NCAA has made decisions in secret without being accountable to anyone.

Well, thanks to Gallion and this process of taking the case to the public, the times
they are changing and the ultimate results could be remarkable.

This most recent debate isn't really about whether Fulmer was a secret witness or not.
It's unlikely any information he provided couldn't have been found elsewhere. The
question is the principles and the morality of this organization giving the coach
certain protections while his own program was being investigated. You don't have to be
an Alabama fan to see the facade in that process. It's pathetic that many fans in
Tennessee can't see the forest for the trees.

Are you saying that doesn't stink? Oh, on the aroma meter, I'd put it up there with
Bourbon Street at the crack of dawn.

So what if Fulmer spent eight hours with Tom Culpepper gaining information? Well, it
might matter more if Culpepper, who had a background in coaching and recruiting, was
also discussing a possible job on Rocky Top!

Regardless, what Fulmer did in the Alabama case may have helped the NCAA in the short
term but it's likely to cost them in the end. In addition to helping to prove
Gallion's case of a conspiracy, it is going to send out a clarion call to future
prospective witnesses to start running if the NCAA comes calling.

However, back to the original argument of whether it matters or not. It does because
this is an organization that can and has ruined lives, careers and the well-being of
universities with virtually no accountability.

The NCAA needs to quit hiding behind the skirts of secret witnesses and manufactured
evidence. ... The mission right now is to expose the NCAA for their corrupt tactics,
their Mafioso tactics, said Gallion. And if it takes down the University of
Tennessee's football program, hallelujah.

Gallion didn't make that statement yesterday. Instead, he made it at the onset of this
case, well over a year ago, in an interview with SI.com, when many of us were laughing
at him, saying he was just another ambulance-chasing lawyer out for an easy buck.

The other day, he told the same organization, in regard to Fulmer, I'm getting ready
to pop that fat b.

Well, here's hoping he does. Because to find a solution, one must first weed out the
problems. Sometimes, turning in another school is necessary, particularly, if one has
exhausted all the appropriate channels.

However, in this case, Fulmer decided to get in bed with the NCAA and go way beyond
the normal channels. Gallion has exposed Fulmer and I'm betting heavily he's going to
be exposing a lot more in the coming days.

It was a longshot at the beginning. Gallion is still not a favorite to win this case
in court. However, in the court of public opinion, he has already shown what many of
us have always believed -- the NCAA is a corrupt, out of control organization that
needs to be brought to its knees.

Bama running out of bandages

Add Winston to list of hobbling Tide players

01/27/04
By PAUL GATTIS
Times Sports Staff [EMAIL PROTECTED]

TUSCALOOSA - Tonight's opponent, as if it mattered, is 22nd-ranked Florida.

To Alabama coach Mark Gottfried, it might as well be the Los Angeles Lakers or nearby
Central High School.

Quite simply, too much is wrong and too little is right these days for the Crimson
Tide.

We have to figure out ourselves, Gottfried said Monday, as well as figure out
Florida.

Sure, Alabama still has a sparkling RPI - checking in this week at No. 19 against the
nation's third-toughest schedule despite the ugly loss Saturday at Ole Miss. Sure, the
premature NCAA Tournament projections all have the Tide on their brackets.

But that's the past and the future.

The problems are in the present.

Leading scorer Earnest Shelton will miss his second straight game with strained knee
ligaments. Starting center Jermareo Davidson went down against Ole Miss with a knee
injury of his own, though he's expected to play against the Gators.

Then there's Kennedy Winston - who is the Tide's leading scorer in Shelton's absence.
But his left knee, which required surgery in September to repair torn cartilage, was
being temperamental Monday.

He woke up (Monday) morning and it looked like a grapefruit down there, Gottfried
said of the swelling in the knee.

So with this unsettling backdrop, Alabama (11-5, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) will try
to maintain its 11-game winning streak at Coleman Coliseum.

Obviously, Gottfried said, we've got to play a great game to have a chance to upset
them. We're banged up and that's not where you want to be going into a game like this.

Davidson will play but his knee won't be 100 percent, Gottfried said. The same goes
for Winston, who has battled soreness all season.

The wounded Tide must recover to face the Gators, who spent a week at No. 1 earlier
this season and are 12-4 against the nation's toughest schedule. Florida snapped a
two-game losing streak with Saturday's 68-52 win over Auburn.

But the Gators are just 1-2 on their opponents' home floor this season, losing at
Louisville and Vanderbilt and winning at South Carolina.

We've been a pretty good road team the last several years, coach Billy Donovan said.
But maybe we're starting over on the road from the standpoint of having a lot of
young guys trying to figure out how to play on the road.

Indeed, the Gators (12-4, 3-2) started four sophomores and a junior against Auburn.
But four starters - forwards David Lee and Christian Drejer and guards Anthony
Roberson and Matt Walsh - are scoring in double figures.

And while all four are capable of carrying the Gators themselves, Gottfried is
particularly wary of Roberson - the sharpshooting point guard who has made 44 percent
of his 3-pointers this season.

I'm not sure there are a whole lot of guards better than him, Gottfried said. He
shoots it quickly and effectively. He's a big-time basketball player.

Namath's need for help hurts

Monday, January 26, 2004
By Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

I got up early yesterday, way before my usual noon time, to catch Joe Namath on ESPN's
Outside The Lines. I wish I had stayed in bed.

It's time for a shameful confession: I'm 47 years old, and I feel let down.

Is that pathetic or what?

Of course, it's pathetic, but I can't help it.

It's bad enough that Namath made a fool of himself on national television a few weeks
ago. Now, we have to see him on ESPN telling the world he needs help for an alcohol
problem?

Sorry, but that hurts.

I'm guessing that's the reaction a lot of people who grew up in Beaver Falls in the
1960s and '70s. We loved calling that little town in Beaver County home, but it's not
as if we had a lot to brag about. There was the Babcock Wilcox steel plant, where
most of our fathers worked. There was the Corner Tavern, where everyone still drinks
cheap beer and eats the best pasta in the valley. And there was the Blue Room pool
hall on Seventh Avenue, where everyone hung out.

But we also had Joe Namath. No one else could make that claim, thank you. He wasn't
just one of us. He became the king of the sports world. He was so big that we didn't
think he was trying to be the least bit funny when he asked Muhammad Ali on national
television, So, Muhammad, how does it feel to be with a real star? We thought it was
a legitimate question.

It all started with Namath's marvelous football ability. He's right; he was a real
star. He was a star at Beaver Falls High School for Larry Bruno, a legendary coach in
our little corner of the world. He was a star at Alabama for Bear Bryant, a legendary
figure in any corner of the football world and a man who once called him the greatest
athlete I ever coached. And, after signing a $427,000 contract, which seemed like a
zillion dollars to us in 1965, he was a star for the New York Jets, so bright that,
with his amazing performance against the heavily favored Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl
III, he almost single-handedly forced the AFL-NFL merger and made Super Bowl Sunday a
national holiday that virtually all of America will celebrate again this week.

Broadway Joe.

Man, he was so cool.

Every teenage boy in Beaver Falls rushed out to buy his book, I Can't Wait Until
Tomorrow, 'Cause I Get Better-Looking Every Day. We dreamed of being in his shoes for
just one night after he said, I like my Johnnie Walker Red and my women blonde. We
all wanted to party with him at his East Side saloon in Manhattan, Bachelors III. We
would have grown a Fu Manchu and worn a full-length fur coat if our parents had
allowed us. Heck, we even considered trying panty hose after he had the nerve to put a
pair on.

Joe Willie was bigger than life.

That probably explains why his fall is so painful to so many of us.

It started a month ago when Namath, drunk and slurring his words, twice told ESPN's
NFL sideline reporter Suzy Kolber that he wanted to kiss her during a national
television interview. He later apologized to Kolber, which would have been enough. He
had built up so many goodwill points over the years that this unfortunate incident
would have gone away quickly.

But there Namath was yesterday, back on ESPN, telling everyone that he sought
counseling for alcoholism. I can't handle it ... I'm convinced that I needed help.

Who knows? Maybe it's true. Maybe Namath, 60 now, turned to alcohol as an escape after
his marriage broke up 2 1/2 years ago. If that's the case, heaven help him with his
recovery.

But it's so easy to be cynical these days. A lot of celebrities get in a jackpot and
immediately blame alcohol or drugs. That's the easy way out. It's the best and fastest
way to get the sympathy vote. We're big on forgiveness in the country, big on second,
third and fourth chances. Maybe that's what Namath was after yesterday. If it is,
heaven help those of us who believed so much in him.

Either way, I'll never look at Namath the same way again.

I know that's more my problem than his. He never asked to be my role model or anyone
else's. No athlete should have to carry that burden. Charles Barkley had that right a
few years back. It's not fair to people who are just as fallible as the rest of us, if
not more so.

I've been preaching for years that the only role models any kid should have should be
across his or her dinner table.

At 47, I believe that more than ever.

Key figure in athletes scandal wants his federal indictment dismissed

By Janice Broach

A key figure in the Mid-South auctioning athletes scandal wants his federal indictment
dismissed. Logan Young was back in court Monday. This is a federal case that involves
big time football, the Crimson Tide of Alabama and now a big time football coach, Phil
Fulmer of the University of Tennessee. And Logan Young's attorneys want to force
Fulmer to start talking to them.

Memphis businessman and Alabama booster, Logan Young left the federal court house
flanked by his very high powered attorneys.Young, on the advice of his attorneys,
would only say he didn't do it. No absolutely not. Young says he absolutely did not
pay 150-thousand dollars to former Trezevant High football coach Lynn Lang to get
Albert Means, who now plays for the University of Memphis, but was on the Bama team,
to sign with Alabama in 2-thousand. Young's attorneys are trying to get the indictment
dismissed for another reason. Attorney Jim Neal said, We think we have a very serious
motion to dismiss this case because in our opinion, our contention, this is not a
matter for the federal government to be it anyway. Even though the NCAA is
investigating, Young's court case is a federal matter involving the FBI. Young's
attorney Jim Neal is also going after University of Tennessee head football coach Phil
Fulmer, who he said seems to have become Columbo.

In court documents, Fulmer aided the NCAA investigation and Fulmer and the NCAA tried
to keep Fulmer's name out of it. The documents say a witness alleges Young laundered
the money allegedly used in the recruiting through Tunica casinos, and that Young is
worth 2-hundred million dollars. Young's attorneys want to subpoena Fulmer to question
him. I don't think I should say anymore about that. Mr. Fulmer will have to take care
of himself. Jim Neal says if the case does go to trial, it will be very interesting.

Logan Young is scheduled to be back on Federal Court in April. Former Trezevant coach
Lynn Lang is awaiting sentencing on federal charges in the case. Milton Kirk was
sentenced to 3 years probation, 200 hours of community service and 6 months in a
half-way house. Albert Means is currently a student at the University of Memphis.

Tide-Vols rivalry could play out in court

By MARK SCHLABACH
Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer

Montgomery -- One of the nation's most storied college football rivalries is being
played out in a federal lawsuit, a criminal case and, if one lawyer gets his way, a
congressional investigation.
It's Alabama vs. Tennessee, but it's much more than that. The lawyer for two former
Alabama assistant coaches alleges they were the victims of a plot by Tennessee coach
Phillip Fulmer, three Tennessee boosters, the NCAA, the FBI and the Memphis office of
the U.S. Justice Department.

There's at least one shred of truth. Evidence ties Fulmer to the NCAA investigation
that resulted in Alabama receiving a five-year probation, a two-year bowl ban and a
reduction in football scholarships.

Documents the NCAA was forced to release this month show that Fulmer spoke at least
twice with the NCAA official who investigated Alabama. Fulmer called enforcement
director Rich Johanningmeier on May 23, 2000 and Aug. 7, 2000 and told him about
wrongdoing by Alabama booster Logan Young, Johanningmeier's report says. Young was the
key figure in Alabama's infractions case.

Thomas Gallion of Montgomery, who is representing former Crimson Tide assistants
Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams in a $60 million defamation suit against the NCAA and
six other defendants, charges that Fulmer and Tennessee informed on Alabama to win
NCAA leniency for themselves. Since 2000, Tennessee has been cleared of allegations of
academic fraud and paying a player, and the NCAA accepted the school's self-imposed
slap on the wrist for a recruiting violation.

Gallion accuses the NCAA of ignoring violations at Tennessee in exchange for Fulmer's
testimony against Alabama. And he accuses federal agencies of working with the NCAA to
undermine the Crimson Tide football program.

In an Oct. 22 letter to Tennessee athletics director Mike Hamilton, Gallion wrote: We
have reason to believe the U.S. Justice Department in Memphis, together with the FBI,
have been working with the NCAA and these Tennessee boosters to further inflict harm
on the University of Alabama football program.

The Tennessee boosters had their sources at the FBI and Justice Department, and they
used them, Gallion said Monday. The Memphis FBI office did not return calls seeking
comment.

At a news conference in Birmingham today, Gallion said, he will ask for a
congressional hearing into the NCAA's investigation of Alabama and the FBI's
involvement in it.

The NCAA doesn't comment on investigations, spokesman Jeff Howard said, but he said
the NCAA was disappointed with the cavalier way documents -- including confidential
interviews -- have been handled by some attorneys involved.

Recruitment of Means

SEC commissioner Mike Slive said he doesn't believe the NCAA would overlook violations
at Tennessee in exchange for Fulmer's testimony against Alabama.

I just don't see the NCAA giving an institution a free pass under any circumstances,
Slive said. That would just have ramifications the NCAA wouldn't want to have to
answer to. I don't think that's the case at all.

Gallion said last week he is sending evidence to Hamilton and the NCAA that proves the
Volunteers committed NCAA rules violations. Hamilton and Fulmer declined to be
interviewed for this story.

Alabama and Tennessee wage one of the nation's most intense interstate rivalries, a
game so famous that fans throughout the South used to refer to it simply by its spot
on the calendar: The Third Saturday in October. The rescheduling of the game to the
fourth Saturday in October -- and Tennessee's victories in eight of its last nine
games against Alabama -- have done nothing to lower the passion on either end.

Young, a longtime Alabama booster, was indicted in October by a federal grand jury in
Memphis on charges of conspiracy, crossing state lines to commit racketeering and
arranging bank withdrawals to cover up a crime. Young pleaded innocent; he faces up to
15 years in prison and a $900,000 fine if convicted.

The charges stem from the Crimson Tide's recruitment of defensive tackle Albert Means
of Memphis. Means signed with Alabama in February 2000 but left school when his high
school coach was accused of accepting $150,000 from Young to influence Means to sign
with the Tide.

Cottrell and Williams lost their jobs after the NCAA's investigation of Alabama, an
investigation Cottrell criticizes for relying on unnamed witnesses. The NCAA defends
its use of anonymous witnesses, claiming that, because it lacks subpoena power, it
must be able to offer anonymity to obtain the information it needs.

Fulmer not given anonymity

The NCAA intended to grant Fulmer anonymity.

Johanningmeier's interview summaries of both conversations state: Fulmer should be
considered a confidential source of information and this memorandum should not be

Trailblazer back at 'Bama
By Malcolm Moran, USA TODAY
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Student and teacher were reunited in November at the start of
Wendell Hudson's new professional life.

Hudson, an assistant athletics director at the University of Alabama, was in New
York's Madison Square Garden for his first game supervising the basketball program he
had changed forever.

C.M. Newton, the coach who brought in Hudson as Alabama's first African-American
scholarship athlete in 1969, was there for radio commentary. They exchanged memories,
shared laughter. They marveled at the road they had traveled.

More than three decades have passed since Hudson's playing career ended in the same
Madison Square Garden where his new career is beginning.

Then, he was the school's first Southeastern Conference player of the year. And
Alabama's trip to the '73 National Invitation Tournament was important enough that
coach Paul Bryant, the Bear himself, changed his spring football practice schedule to
fly to New York and sit on the Crimson Tide bench.

The three altered a landscape with an effort built upon Hudson's ability, commitment
and demeanor, Newton's vision to build a program with in-state talent regardless of
color and Bryant's endorsement of a new coach's initiative.

Hudson came home after spending 18 years at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas,
in capacities that included women's basketball coach, men's basketball coach and
athletics director. He is the first former Alabama basketball player to become an
administrator in its athletics department.

There's a story to his past, but he has been a very successful athletic director at
the junior college level, says Alabama coach and former player Mark Gottfried.
Wearing the uniform doesn't make you qualified to do it. That's what I like about
Wendell and what he has done professionally. I don't have to play catch-up with him.

That's because Hudson knows the territory. There's no learning curve, no awkward
moments with the coach. His duties will include leading the effort to reconnect with
former athletes and helping to carry out the school's first capital campaign for
athletics, a $100 million project to improve facilities. The result of his previous
effort cannot be calculated.

The flippant, often-repeated notion that University of Southern California running
back Sam Cunningham's 1970 success against the Crimson Tide was a turning point for
integration trivializes the understanding that began to take shape one year earlier.

Before Wilbur Jackson and John Mitchell integrated Alabama football, Hudson became the
only black resident of Bryant Hall, the athletics dorm. The emerging status of Alabama
basketball and the enduring success of Bryant's program would depend upon Hudson's
sense of accomplishment and contentment.

Wendell was in a position of nodding his head or shaking his head, says Ben Shurett,
then a student manager for the basketball program, now a newspaper publisher in Fort
Payne, Ala. If he had said, 'You don't want to come here,' that would have had a
tremendous effect on the football program.

Ray Odums, whose Carver High team lost to Hudson's Parker High in the finals of the
first integrated Alabama state tournament in 1969, would enroll at Alabama one year
after Hudson's arrival. They were treating him real nice, and he was enjoying
himself, says Odums, who became an all-SEC guard.

If that hadn't happened? It probably would have really hurt the recruiting of black
athletes, he says.

Mal Moore, the Alabama athletics director who hired Hudson last summer, was an
assistant football coach at the time. He says, The success of Wendell and John
Mitchell and Wilbur Jackson did as much for integration in this state as any one
thing. It brought everybody together.

A matter of family

The relationship between Hudson and Newton has always been far more than a milepost
for a university, a state and a region. It could be found in the coach's assurance,
apprehensive and resolute at once, in response to a mother's question.

She said, 'What's it going to be like for my boy down at the university?' Newton
says, remembering. I just told her, 'I don't know. I only know how I'm treating him.
I'm not going to treat Wendell any different than anybody else. I'm a middle-class
white guy. I don't know what it's going to be like.'

The relationship began with Newton's admiration for the discipline of a single-parent
household in Birmingham and Hudson's ability to navigate without access to a car. The
coach would eventually give the player driving lessons. NCAA rule violation,
probably, Newton says. If it is, bury me.

After his wife, Evelyn, died in March 2000, Newton began to suspect, correctly, that
Hudson had something to do with the periodic telephone calls from former players. Soon
after, when Newton would learn of an honor

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Texas AM running back Derek Farmer became the second key
offensive player to leave the team Tuesday when he enrolled at Stephen F. Austin for
his senior season.

Farmer followed backup quarterback Dustin Long, who started classes last week at Sam
Houston State University. By transferring to NCAA Division I-AA Southland Conference
schools, both players are eligible to play immediately.

We are as excited to have someone of Derek's abilities come into our program as he is
about coming to Stephen F. Austin, SFA coach Mike Santiago said. He has the
potential to add more quality to an already good football team.

In three seasons at Texas AM, Farmer gained 1,582 yards. He started all 12 Aggie
games last season and gained 340 yards on 82 carries. His performance was overshadowed
by Courtney Lewis, who rushed 1,024 yards.

AM coach Dennis Franchione was not immediately available for comment. [...]

[RollTideFan] Lawyers: Fulmer a secret witness

Lawyers: Fulmer a secret witness

Attorneys for former Tide coaches say documents show Tennessee coach sought out NCAA
to accuse Bama of violations

01/16/04
By THOMAS MURPHY
Sports Reporter

Lawyers for former University of Alabama assistant football coaches Ronnie Cottrell
and Ivy Williams say recently released documents show University of Tennessee head
coach Phillip Fulmer was used as a confidential witness in the NCAA's case against
Alabama.

Cottrell and Williams have filed a $60 million lawsuit against the NCAA and other
parties.

I've been saying, 'Look at Tennessee' all along, said Montgomery-based attorney
Tommy Gallion. It's amazing that an organization like the NCAA would not only cover
up the dealings (of alleged NCAA infractions) with Tennessee but also, at the
direction of (Fulmer), go after another program.

They buried everything at Tennessee and they went after Alabama based on what Phillip
Fulmer said.

Memphis-based attorney Phillip Shanks, co-counsel for Cottrell and Williams, said
Fulmer and Tom Culpepper, a Birmingham recruiting analyst whom Shanks identified as
another secret witness in the Alabama case, discussed ways to turn the NCAA loose on
Alabama football to vindicate each of their agendas.

Documents obtained by the Register on Thursday show Fulmer initiated two phone
conversations with NCAA investiga tor Rich Johanningmeier, on May 23, 2000 and Aug. 7,
2000, to discuss what Fulmer felt were potential NCAA rules violations at Alabama.

During the Aug. 7 call, Fulmer told Johanningmeier that, with his lawyer's advice,
Fulmer secretly recorded 90 minutes of an eight-hour conversation with Culpepper in
Chattanooga during the summer of 2000 in which Culpepper discussed information he
could provide regarding NCAA rules violations at Alabama.

In Johanningmeier's interview summaries, the investigator wrote in all capital
letters: Fulmer should be regarded as a confidential source of information and this
memorandum should not be included in any custodial arrangements that could be made in
the future with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa.

Gallion and Shanks have been poring through more than 7,800 pages of documents and
hundreds of hours of tapes related to the NCAA's investigation of Alabama, including
interviews between Johanningmeier and Fulmer.

The documents, which the NCAA had argued to keep sealed, became available through a
motion by Jim Neal, the former Watergate prosecutor and lead counsel for former
Alabama booster Logan Young in his federal conspiracy case.

The documents and tapes offer a glimpse into the NCAA's lengthy investigation into
Alabama football and the role Fulmer played.

The government has to know now, with this information that has been released ...
there is no case against Logan, no case against Ronnie and no case against Ivy,
Shanks said. They were the wild imaginations from the diseased mind of Tom Culpepper
with help from Fulmer.

Fulmer did not immediately return a phone message left by the Register Thursday
evening.

According to Johanningmeier's interview summaries, Fulmer said a friend of his who
worked with Game Day Centers, a group out of Opelika that developed condominiums near
college football stadiums, had information pertaining to former Alabama running back
Shaun Alexander and a Dr. Porch. The friend, according to Fulmer, said Porch's
daughter told him that her family was looking forward to being assigned another
Alabama football student-athlete after enjoying a close relationship with Alexander.

Sandra Porch Nesmith, an elementary school teacher in Arab and the daughter of Arab
physician and long-time Alabama supporter Dr. Ellis Porch Sr., called Fulmer's
statement absolutely absurd.

My daddy has always been very active in the First Baptist Church and our pastor was
always looking for ways to get the youth more involved in church, Nesmith said
Thursday. Daddy went through the university to get some players to come speak to our
church.

Shaun came up with (former Alabama quarterback) John David Phillips and spoke. Shaun
spoke a couple of times, including at our fifth-grade D.A.R.E. graduation, and he
would come to our house when he did. But daddy was always very careful to ask the
people at the university to make sure nothing was against the rules.

I never said anything about a player being assigned because nothing like that ever
happened. That's just a bold-face lie.

Fulmer also told Johanningmeier that Culpepper could provide information to the NCAA
on several fronts against Alabama.

To wit:

-- Arrangements were made to pay Alexander to play his senior season of 1999;

-- Arrangements were made to obtain a fraudulent ACT score for former Tide player
Harold James;

-- A person who monitored standardized tests was paid by Cottrell to ensure that
prospects being recruited by Alabama would receive

Alabama attorney says Fulmer lied to NCAA

By MIKE GRIFFITH
January 16, 2004

Gallion said on a Birmingham radio show that Fulmer told a pack of lies’’ in his
testimony to the NCAA regarding the investigation into violations that occurred at the
University of Alabama.

Fulmer wouldn’t comment on what he told the NCAA.

This relates to an ongoing federal investigation in Memphis,’’ Fulmer said. It’s not
appropriate to discuss it.’’

According to Gallion, Fulmer was one of three secret witnesses who provided damning
testimony in the NCAA’s case against Alabama. The Tide was placed on five years’
probation, which included the loss of 21 scholarships and a two-year bowl ban.

Gallion said he has copies of documentation in which Fulmer told the NCAA that former
Tide running back Shaun Alexander received improper benefits and that a former Alabama
assistant coach carried on an affair with a recruit’s mother.

The documentation reportedly was filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Memphis
in conjunction with a federal investigation of Alabama booster Logan Young.

Young was accused of paying $150,000 to lure Memphis defensive line prospect Albert
Means to Alabama. He has pleaded innocent to charges of conspiracy, crossing state
lines to commit racketeering and arranging bank withdrawals to cover up a crime.

Gallion, who represents Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams in various suits involving
their dismissal from the Tide’s football staff in 2000, said there is more to come in
his crusade against Fulmer’s hypocrisy.’’

This is the first missile, if you want to call it that,’’ Gallion said. We hope to
put a lot more together.’’

Gallion said the court documents relate to an eight-hour meeting in Chattanooga
between Alabama Internet recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper, Fulmer and Fulmer’s
attorney in August 2000. Gallion said portions of the meeting were recorded on tape.

According to Gallion, Fulmer fostered a relationship with Culpepper while coaching in
the Hula Bowl all-star game in 2000.
Culpepper also provided testimony to the NCAA against Alabama.

It could be giving us a sample of an 8 hr. secretly recorded tape between Phat
Phil and Tom Culpepper discussing recruiting schemes that were used against
the Tide! Somehow, Logan Young got his hands on this tape, or a copy, and
passed it along to Tommy Gallion, for review. This could make the case against the
ncaa a little more interesting!! I wonder if this has anything to do with the ncaa
suddenly dropping their most recent letter in our lap...well before
the Memphis hearing could have dug up more condemning evidence on us. I bet
the case against LY never makes it to the courthouse steps! Ram it home,
 Tommy!!

[RollTideFan] The Tide has turned

2004-01-12 Thread kr10
http://recruiting.theinsiders.com/2/222779.html

Posted: Jan 12, 2004
For Alabama, things have gotten better, especially when it comes to recruiting.
The Tide has turned

By Jamie Newberg National Recruiting Analyst

As of last Thursday Alabama checked in the with No. 13 rated recruiting class. What a
big and pleasant surprise Alabama has been this recruiting season, especially after
all the adversity in Tuscaloosa.

Signing Day is next month and there are still many prospects out there. In fact, there
are too many to count and still a ways to go. Like always, there will be some
surprises. One big surprise already this recruiting season is the Alabama Crimson Tide.

I guess one could say the Tide has turned. Lets face it, the University of Alabama has
had more than its share of problems over the past few years. Alabama has faced NCAA
probation, scholarship reductions, coaching turnover and embarrassment to one of the
most prestigious programs in all of college football. It has been Murphy's Law in
Tuscaloosa: Everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong.

After the Mike Price debacle, Alabama went back to family and brought in Mike Shula.
Coach Shula had no spring practice and a stacked deck against him this past season.
They played their way through an un-Alabama like 4-9 season. Things looked bleak in
Tuscaloosa until recently.

Shula and company have a top class that has quieted the critics for now. When you
consider all that has gone wrong, what they have done is simply extraordinary when it
comes to recruiting.

Going into this season, their bitter in-state rival, Auburn, was expected to dominate
the recruiting scene in the state of Alabama. But Auburn greatly underachieved this
past year. Then, after the season, Tommy Tuberville was on the hot seat. Was he
staying or was he going? The president, athletic director and others created an
embarrassing situation of their own. Who benefited? It looks like Alabama did.

Shula has one of the top recruiting classes in the ultra-competitive SEC right now.
And things should stay that way over the next four weeks. Leading the way are several
in-state standouts like defensive back Simeon Castile (Birmingham, Ala.), offensive
linemen B.J. Stabler (Grove Hill, Ala.), Justin Britt (Cullman, Ala.) and Cody Davis
(Tuscaloosa, Ala.), defensive tackle Kevin Hamilton (Prattville, Ala.), safety Marcus
Carter (Fort Payne, Ala.), offensive lineman Antoine Caldwell (Montgomery) and
linebacker Ezekiel Knight (Wedowee, Ala.).

Last season, Hoover, Ala., All-American wide receiver Chad Jackson signed with the
Gators over Alabama. This season, Hoover has several big name recruits and Alabama got
them all, including quarterback John Parker Wilson, defensive end Jeramie Holifield
and linebacker Curtis Dawson. The state's top recruit, wide receiver Nikita Stover,
also has committed to play for the Crimson Tide.

Despite their success the Crimson Tide did lose some key recruits. The state's top
running back, Markus Manson (Tuscalossa, Ala.), committed to Florida but will still
visit Alabama on the last visit weekend of the month. Defensive tackle David Brown
(Madison, Ala.) has committed to Georgia Tech and defensive back Chevis Jackson
(Mobile, Ala.) has committed to LSU. But Alabama is still fighting for some super
out-of-state recruits. Defensive lineman Lorenzo Washington (Loganville, Ga.) is one
of the top recruits from the Peach State and the Tide and Dawgs have been his longtime
leaders. Also, the top prospect in the state of Georgia, linebacker/defensive end
Brandon Miller (Colquitt, Ga.), is expected to make an official visit to Alabama some
time this month. That's big in itself. Other possibilies are offensive lineman Chester
Adams (Luverne, Ala.), wide receiver D.J. Hall (Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.), defensive end
K.T. Mainard (Coalmont, Tenn., wide receiver Keith Brown (Pensacola, Fla.) and
defensive lineman Jeremy Jones (Harvey, La.).

The bottom line is that Alabama has overcome its troubles, taken advantage of Auburn's
woes and fought hard to beat most of their out of state rivals for the top-notch kids.

But the state of Alabama is like no other. No one takes their football as seriously as
they do and, lets face it, if you grow up a fan of Alabama, you will want to play
there whether they are 12-0 or 0-12.

Maybe this is a sign that there are better times ahead for Shula, the program and the
loyal Alabama faithful.

[RollTideFan] 2003-2004 Ultimate National Title

2004-01-12 Thread kr10

Screw the BCS, the bowls and all the playoff systems. We're once again doing our
Ultimate National Title taking every Division-I college football team and giving them
a shot at the crown. This is a war of endurance as much as talent.

With 117 teams, there has to be three of 29 teams and one of 30. The weakest of the
No. 3 seeds, in this case, Ole Miss, has to play an extra game. All of the other top
three seeds get a first round bye. The higher seed gets the home game up until the
semifinals. The seedings are based on our rankings before all the bowl games. In the
interest of trying to avoid games that are repeats of regular season matchups trying
to put as many different teams from different conferences in the brackets and yes, the
geographical directions are names only. Click link for all the seedings.

Round won is in the books! Bama 24 UNLV 17

Former relief pitcher Tug McGraw dies

By ROB MAADDI
The Associated Press
1/5/2004, 9:23 p.m. CT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Tug McGraw, the zany relief pitcher who coined the phrase You
Gotta Believe with the New York Mets and later closed out the Philadelphia Phillies'
only World Series championship, died Monday. He was 59.

McGraw died of brain cancer at the home of his son, country music star Tim McGraw,
outside of Nashville, according to Laurie Hawkins, a family spokesperson. He had been
battling the disease since March when he underwent surgery for a malignant tumor.

McGraw's illness came as a shock to fans and friends alike last spring. He was at
Phillies' training camp in Clearwater, Fla., as a special instructor, looking fine and
acting as funny as ever. Then, he was suddenly hospitalized on March 12.

We lost a part of Mets history tonight, Mets owner Fred Wilpon said. Tug was a
battler on and off the field. I know he fought the disease with every ounce of energy
he had. We'll all miss him dearly.

Especially former Phillies teammate and Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt.

He put up a gallant fight, Schmidt said. Publicly, he never let on that he had
gotten a raw deal. He was Tug through the entire thing. As he always said, `I
front-loaded my life, just like my contract.' His passing is hard to take because his
presence meant so much to people around him.

Bob Boone, who was the Phillies' catcher from 1972-81, remained a close friend, too.

I was real pleased I was able to be with him a little bit the last couple of months,
Boone said from his home in Anaheim, Calif. All of a sudden it hit and he went real
quick, which probably is a blessing.

I know he got more living out of his 59 years than anybody. What you saw was what Tug
was. There was no phoniness at all. He loved people and loved life.

McGraw participated in the closing ceremonies for Veterans Stadium, which will be
demolished next month. During the program, he re-enacted his final pitch of the 1980
World Series, striking out Kansas City's Willie Wilson for the title.

He popularized the phrase You Gotta Believe during the Mets' 1973 World Championship
season and carried the slogan through his illness, vowing he'd be on hand next month
to push the button to bring down the Vet.

McGraw was known for charging off the mound, slapping his right hand on his thigh and
tapping his chest after a close call.

Patting his hand on his heart after a guy hits a home run foul, who would do that in
the heat of the battle? said Phillies manager Larry Bowa, who played with McGraw on
the 1980 championship team. But it showed he had no fear. He was loose. That's how he
played the game.

A left-hander who threw a screwball, McGraw could be a bit of screwball himself.

Once asked whether he preferred to play on a grass field or an artificial surface, he
said, I don't know. I never smoked any AstroTurf.

McGraw's playful personality often overshadowed his talent. He was an outstanding
big-game pitcher during his 19-year career.

In 26 postseason games, he had a 2.23 ERA and was 3-3 with eight saves.

McGraw was 96-92 with a 3.14 ERA and 180 saves, and was a two-time All-Star. He made
his major league debut with the Mets in 1965 at age 20 and finished with the Phillies
in 1984.

After the 1974 season, McGraw was traded by the Mets to Philadelphia in a six-player
swap that sent John Stearns to New York. With McGraw, the Phillies won five division
titles, two NL pennants and one World Series.

McGraw had 20 saves and a 1.46 ERA in 1980, helping put Philadelphia into the
playoffs. After the Phillies got past Houston in a tight NLCS — McGraw pitched in
every game of the best-of-five series — they faced the Royals in the World Series.

In addition to his son Tim, McGraw is survived by sons Mark and Matthew McGraw; a
daughter, Cari Velardo, and four grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately available.

[RollTideFan] Arkansas Coach Nutt Turns Down Nebraska

2004-01-03 Thread kr10
Arkansas Coach Nutt Turns Down Nebraska

By DOUGLAS PILS
AP Sports Writer
January 03, 2004

Houston Nutt rejected Nebraska's $2 million coaching offer, saying strong family ties
and a job left undone kept him at Arkansas.

I could not take my family, myself, and get on that plane, Nutt said at a news
conference Saturday. My heart was here. Nebraska offered Nutt the job Friday, but
Arkansas made a counteroffer.

They're going to take care of me. There are some things still being worked out, Nutt
said.

Nutt said he was flattered at Nebraska's offer, but that it was best for him to remain
in his home state.

For six long years we've poured our heart into this program and we feel that our work
isn't finished, Nutt said.

Nebraska fired coach Frank Solich in November after a 9-3 regular season. At Arkansas,
Nutt has won nine games in the regular season twice, in 1998 and 2002.

[RollTideFan] Not Nutt...

2004-01-02 Thread kr10
http://www.kthv.com/news/news.aspx?storyid=8219

FROM FAYETTEVILLE: 6 PM NEWS CONFERENCE SCHEDULED
Despite a tempting offer, reported to be in the neighborhood of $ 2 million dollars,
to be the coach of the University of Nebraska, indications are that Houston Nutt will
announce that he will be staying on as head coach of the Arkansas Razorback football
team at a 6:00 p.m. press conference.

Todays THV will carry that press conference live at 6:00 p.m.

The first indication that Nutt may be staying on as Arkansas’ coach were reports
Friday afternoon that he was calling recruits and telling them he was staying on.

Arkansas finished 9-4 this year, Nutt's third nine-win season in six years, after
beating Missouri 27-14 in the Independence Bowl on Wednesday. Besides beating Missouri
from the Big 12, the Razorbacks also defeated Texas this year; giving Nutt wins over
two teams that beat Nebraska this year.

Broyles gave Nebraska permission to speak with Nutt after Arkansas' victory over
Missouri. Nutt said Thursday morning after the victory that he hadn't talked with
anyone from Nebraska, but he met with Pederson in Fayetteville on Thursday evening.

Nutt has a 48-27 record over six years at Arkansas. He is 84-49 in his 11-year career,
which includes four years at Murray State, where he made two trips to the NCAA
Division I-AA playoffs, and one year at Boise State.

Nutt still mulling NU offer

BY ELIZABETH MERRILL
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LINCOLN - With a plane waiting to take him back to Nebraska, and a $2
million offer on the table, Arkansas Coach Houston Nutt was still
mulling the Nebraska job Friday evening in Fayetteville.

Nothing is settled, Arkansas Athletic Director Frank Broyles said
when reached at home Friday night.

When asked what was holding things up, Broyles said, His agent.

A 6 p.m. press conference was originally scheduled in Arkansas to
announce Nutt's decision. But Broyles said negotiations had hit a snag.

Nutt was offered a package that is nearly $1 million more annually
than Frank Solich's $1.1 million package. Solich was fired on Nov. 29
after a 9-3 regular season.

Spurrier Denies Resignation Reports

By Mark Maske
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, December 30, 2003; 1:22 PM

The Washington Redskins announced the resignation of Coach Steve Spurrier today only
to have Spurrier deny that he had resigned moments later.

I have not resigned, Spurrier said by cellphone. I've got a representative looking
into some issues but I have not resigned. If they say that I have, that is not true.
I'm not sure it is heading in that direction right now. We are seeing where it goes
but I have not resigned.

A team source said that Spurrier's new agent, Jimmy Sexton, told the Redskins to issue
the news release.

In a news release issued early this afternoon, the Redskins said Spurrier had
telephoned owner Daniel Snyder and resigned in the best interest of the Redskins
franchise. In the release, Snyder said I have accepted Steve's resignation with much
regret but respect his decision.

The Redskins said in the release that they will begin their search for Spurrier's
replacement immediately.

[RollTideFan] Ball, Dunn say 'no’ to Price, UTEP

Ball, Dunn say 'no’ to Price, UTEP

By Howie Stalwick
Special to The Tuscaloosa News
December 23, 2003

Mike Price says he hit a home run in his job hunt, but he struck out on his attempt to
lure two of his former Alabama assistant coaches to Texas-El Paso.

Chris Ball and Kasey Dunn said they are delighted to see Price back in coaching, but
they turned down Price’s request to assist him at his new job.

“We’re going to stay put in Alabama, Ball said by phone Monday from Springfield, Mo.,
where his family is visiting his wife’s family. “Family reasons are the No. 1 reason;
not wanting to move the family again, and my wife is pregnant is probably the main
reason.

Ball, Alabama’s secondary coach, followed Price from Washington State to Alabama after
the 2002 season. Dunn, Price’s assistant head coach at WSU and Alabama, lost his job
at Alabama after Price was fired last spring before coaching a game. Dunn was named
Texas Christian’s secondary coach at midseason.

“TCU is a great job; I wouldn’t consider going out there [to El Paso], Dunn said by
phone from Fort Worth, where the Horned Frogs will play Boise State tonight in the
inaugural Fort Worth Bowl. “Mike has been a great friend. On the other hand, so has
Gary [TCU coach Gary Patterson].

Price, 57, has said his sons, Eric and Aaron, may join the UTEP coaching staff. Both
assisted him at WSU and Alabama, though they were let go by the Crimson Tide after
their father was fired.

UTEP athletic director Bob Stull, the former Washington associate athletic director
and assistant football coach who has been a longtime admirer of Price, said Price will
be paid “a little more than the $149,350 base salary paid to the fired Gary Nord. The
latter reportedly made a total of approximately $200,000 this season, one of the
lowest head coaching salaries in I-A football.

Price made more than $800,000 in his final year at WSU, and his seven-year contract at
Alabama would have averaged $1.7 million per year. Price was fired before coaching a
game at Alabama after a night of heavy drinking at a strip club in Florida.

[RollTideFan] Two LSU players ineligible for Sugar Bowl

2003-12-23 Thread kr10
Two LSU players ineligible for Sugar Bowl
http://www.al.com/sportsflash/topstories/index.ssf?/base/sports-2/1072196342312410.xml

The Associated Press
12/23/2003, 10:14 a.m. CT

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- LSU running back Shyrone Carey and long snapper Steve Damen
were declared ineligible for the Sugar Bowl because of unspecified rules violations.

No. 2 LSU (12-1) will play No. 3 Oklahoma (12-1) for the Bowl Championship Series
title on Jan. 4.

Carey began the season as one of the team's two main running backs, but his role
diminished after he missed four games with a knee injury.

Center Ben Wilkerson has been long-snapping in practice and others, including backup
Gant Petty, can handle the assignment, coach Nick Saban said.

Saban would not disclose what Carey and Damen did, but he said they must understand
the consequences of their actions.

They've been warned about these types of things in the past. I'm sure they feel worse
about it than anybody, Saban said.

Everyone else is doing what these kids did. These kids are human beings. They are
held to a higher standard and have a lot of rules, relative to what they can and can't
do relative to a bowl game.
