But the NCAA rule book got in the way. Dan Miller, father of Broncos sophomore guard Tad Miller, is a retired police lieutenant who is training Iraqi police officers. When Sam Hendrix of Signal Mountain, Tenn. "suthndawg" to his fellow Georgia fans on the Dawgvent, an Internet message board read a story in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the Millers, he started an online movement to raise the $2,700 it will cost Dad to make it to Sanford Stadium to see his son play in the home opener Sept. 3. "Within moments of suthndawg's post, there were 25 to 50 people who offered to pledge money," said Ryan Crowe, a 25-year-old legal assistant from Atlanta who offered to collect and distribute the funds. "It just took off from there." But when Crowe checked with the two schools, he was told the UGA fans' generosity would be a violation of NCAA bylaws regarding extra benefits and expenses for student athletes and their families. "Ironically, by providing this money, these [Georgia] fans would in effect become Boise State boosters," said Amy Chisholm, UGA's assistant athletics director for compliance. The NCAA defines a booster as "a representative of an institution's athletics interests." NCAA spokeswoman Gail Dent did not have an immediate response to questions about the situation Wednesday. "Makes no sense to me," said Hendrix, a 56-year-old marketing consultant. "It just hits me that twice in a week, these people have lost touch with reality." The NCAA caused a furor when it ruled last week that member schools' Native American mascots would no longer be allowed at championship events. Word of the Georgia fans' good intentions and their being thwarted spread quickly via the Internet. "It was such a nice and giving gesture, I almost felt embarrassed," said Kathy Miller, Tad's mother, who lives in Boise, Idaho. "We appreciate it so much. But we want people to know that the company Dan contracts for pays for his R&R every six months, and this will be his first time home since January. So his travel is taken care of." "Perhaps they can collect money to send some underprivileged kids to the game or something," she added. Kathy Miller said the family received other overtures from Georgia fans. One offered to host a party for the family when it arrives in Athens. Miller said she is running everything by Boise State's compliance office. Said Crowe: "Us Georgia fans love our football but, as a collective group, we're pretty hospitable people." Do you hear me, NCAA? I don't want to see that darn leprechaun at Notre Dame's games anymore. No more of that goofy green suit. No more of that hokey hat. Most of all, no more of that offensive, insensitive, insulting, dehumanizing dance. As a proud Irish-American, I demand that you make the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame get rid of that stupefying, stereotypical mascot of theirs. And that little jig of his. And I mean pronto, if you'll excuse my use of Indian lingo. Ladies and gentlemen of the NCAA, I implore you. Do that thing you do. Do what you did Friday, when your executive committee announced that it no longer would tolerate any "hostile and abusive racial/ethnic/national origin mascots, nicknames or imagery." A leprechaun is all that. He is mischievous by nature. He is up to no good. He clearly is abusive. Have you ever seen him treat Notre Dame's enemies with any kindness? And what of that big, crooked stick in his hand? He doesn't carry that cudgel because he is lame. It isn't a cane. A leprechaun doesn't limp. Look at that little fool do his dance. He moves fine. No, a shillelagh looks like a weapon to me. You wouldn't let a Seminole or an Illini walk around a football stadium with a bow and arrow, would you? I can guess what you are thinking. You're thinking an Irish-American is not an oppressed minority. Or hasn't been one. Well, you couldn't be more wrong. Irish immigrants were given a very bad time in America when they first came here. They were treated as suspicious foreigners. Their ancestry and accents were mocked. They were maligned as "Micks" and stigmatized as brawling drunks. Therefore, I would like you righteous brothers and sisters at the NCAA to put an end to the degradation of this "Fighting Irish" slur once and for all. A lot of us don't fight. I don't fight. Well, I did toss a guy out of a bar in Greece last summer, but he was drunker than I was. The NCAA has made a good start. The actions it took Friday gave notice to the Bradley Braves and Central Michigan Chippewas and Utah Utes that they had better take all of their Native American garb, arrowheads, weapons and war paint and dump the whole pile into a Dumpster. If these people want to host a postseason competition ever again, they will have to abide by the NCAA's rules and lose the Indian theme. You, noble warlords of the NCAA, are taking no prisoners. University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux? What do you care if there are Sioux who don't care? So what if there are remaining members of the Sioux tribe who are honored by this legacy? Your edict has come down. You have spoken. The next time North Dakota plays for a national championship, its mascot had better be Buffalo Bill. OK, so a lot of us happen to believe that tribal names are not unto themselves offensive. Illini, Seminole, Chippewa, Choctaw these don't seem so bad to us. They have history and dignity. We have entire states named for Indian tribes, for heaven's sake. What do you think the word "Illinois" is, anyway French? Its origin is Algonquin. What some of us do resent is the way Caucasians paint their faces red and wear buckskin and feathers and go hey-yo-yo-yo and woo-woo-woo. It doesn't matter if there are some Indians who take no umbrage at this, not until you have taken a vote from every last one of them in this land that their ancestors founded. Jimmy Carter was as humane and decent a president as this nation has had in this last half-century. So it was appalling to see him at Atlanta Braves baseball games, chanting and chopping a make-believe tomahawk. There are ways to support a favorite team without making a mockery of an entire culture and race. Somebody should take those Cleveland Indians caps with the grinning red-faced Indian and fling them into Ohio's largest incinerator. Somebody should go up to an African-American athlete on the Washington Redskins and ask him how he would like it if his team were known as the Washington uh, you know. I don't mind a team being called the Irish, I really don't. I take pride in my heritage. I wish we could live in a world in which a university's teams could be called the Fighting Italians, the Fighting Mexicans, the Fighting Japanese or the Fighting Germans. Yet if we get rid of some, mustn't we get rid of all? Can a school really get away with calling itself the Fighting Irish in the wake of this NCAA posse's vigilant PC crackdown? Doesn't this scurrilous nickname need to go? Isn

[RollTideFan] Former professional ball player arrested in raid
http://www.al.com/news/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/news/1123332310139870.xml&coll=3 Former professional ball player arrested in raid Saturday, August 06, 2005 By JEFF AMY Staff Reporter Former professional football player Ralph Lahquan Staten was arrested early Friday by Mobile County sheriff's deputies on charges of cocaine trafficking and possession of marijuana. Staten, 30, was arrested after deputies raided a trailer in a mobile home park at 5530 Natchez Highway in Wilmer. Deputies found powdered and crack cocaine totaling a little more than two ounces and a "small amount" of marijuana, according to Christina Bowersox, spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Department. Deputies also seized a handgun and two vehicles. Staten was an all-state player at Mary G. Montgomery High School before signing as a linebacker with the University of Alabama in 1993. Staten was suspended by coach Gene Stallings for breaking team rules, but was also chosen as an all-SEC player. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the seventh round of the 1997 NFL draft and played two seasons. After being released, he played with the Mobile Seagulls of the Indoor Professional Football League and from 2000 to 2002 in the Canadian Football League. While a member of the Ravens, Staten was arrested when a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun was found in his car after he failed to negotiate a curve and struck a guardrail. In a previous incident, Staten was charged with drunken driving when his car collided with another in Baltimore County. Staten was arrested on similar drug charges in a 2004 traffic stop but was never prosecuted, according to court records. He was being held in Mobile County Metro Jail Friday pending a Monday bond hearing. Bowersox said deputies were investigating to see whether other people are involved. __ Do You Yahoo!? [RollTideFan] Eli strikes Gold
http://www.andalusiastarnews.com/articles/2005/08/04/sports/473sports.txt Eli strikes Gold By John Wallace Thursday, August 4, 2005 8:45 PM CDT Eli Gold lives up to his name in "Crimson Nation." The "Voice of the Crimson Tide" strikes gold in his new book about Alabama football. The newest book regarding the legendary college football program that is The University of Alabama and its many legendary players and coaches proves Gold can truly paint a picture with words. One can almost hear his unique, signature voice telling the tales of Alabama Crimson Tide glory as they read the history of one of the winningest college football programs. "Crimson Nation" (ISBN: 1401601901, $24.95, Rutledge Hill Press) begins with the birth of football at the Capstone and weaves its way to the present with a colorful collection of stories helped along by Gold's in-depth research and insight interviews with former coaches and players. The book begins slowly with Gold having to rely on other books, old newspaper articles and other documents to map out the beginning of Alabama's football program. The story bogs down a little in the early going, but once Gold reaches the 1950s the storyline picks up pace and never slows down. Pages begin to flip faster as Gold uses his mastery of storytelling combined with interesting tales and unforgettable quotes from the people who were there. "Crimson Nation" really begins to speed along once Gold mentions late Alabama Head Coach Paul W. "Bear" Bryant's return to the Capstone when "Mama called." The book, like the Alabama football program, does not slow down once the descriptive account of Bear's return to Tuscaloosa and his winning ways at the University begin to unravel in Gold's smooth, easy-going but excitable tone. One of the best parts of the book is Gold's recollection of the 1992 National Championship season. He also adds more than a few tongue-in-cheek remarks throughout the book within parenthesis to help set the tone and mood for each story. The book takes fans from the inception to the present in a enjoyable manner ending with a promise of more to come. Now is the perfect time to read this well-written book because it ends with talk of last season and an up-tempo optimism for 2005 and beyond. Auburn fans may want to skip "Crimson Nation" after an undefeated 13-0 season in 2004. Alabama fans, however, can rest assured this is one of many books on Alabama football deserving of a spot in their libraries or on their coffee table. If you are an Alabama Crimson Tide fan and can't wait for the 2005 season to begin, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of "Crimson Nation." It's well worth the price and definitely a book every fan should have in its hardback edition. It'll be a great addition to any library and want it be nice to have it when Gold updates his personal history of the Tide with Crimson Nation II? Of course, one of the reasons I like it so much is because of a great photo of current Alabama Head Coach Mike Shula and a handsome photographer standing in the background on page 222 of the hardback edition. But, seriously, this is a book by an Alabama fan for Alabama fans. A book everyone who has ever chanted "Rammer Jammer, Yellow Hammer!" will enjoy and appreciate. [RollTideFan] Former Bama Kicker Watches His Historic House Burn
nbc13.com Former Bama Kicker Watches His Historic House Burn POSTED: 2:09 pm CDT August 4, 2005 FLORENCE, Ala. -- A century-old two-story house owned by one of Alabama's former star football players sustained heavy damage during a fire in the city's historic district. Van Tiffin became a part of Crimson Tide folklore when his last-second, 52-yard field goal defeated rival Auburn in 1985. He stood helplessly yesterday afternoon as he watched firefighters put out the fire. Tiffin said he and his wife bought the home several months ago and had been renovating it. The blaze was reported to shortly before noon and according to firefighters the home is salvageable. An investigator said the fire apparently started as roofers were welding the portion of the roof that covers the porch to the roof's sloped portion. No one was in the house when the fire started. One firefighter was treated for apparent heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. [RollTideFan] Internet bullets can't stop Croyle
Internet bullets can't stop CroyleBy BRYAN APPAlligator Staff Writer Photo Courtesy of Alabama Sports Information After an ACL tear and false internet rumors of his kidnapping in Argentina, Alabama quarterback Brodie Croyle attempts to overcome past woes and lead the Tide to prominence. HOOVER, Ala. - Smashed shoulder, crushed knee, kidnapped and shot, Alabama quarterback Brodie Croyle has never felt better. That's because Croyle will return as the Crimson Tide quarterback despite rumors of his kidnapping in July in Argentina. Now, disciples of Bear Bryant can rest easy. Before Croyle could become the next Natalee Holloway, the senior dispelled the myths at Southeastern Conference Media Days on Friday. Internet rumors began to swirl shortly after Croyle embarked on a four-day dove hunting excursion with his father and friends in rural Argentina. With no cell phone service, Croyle's crew could check in with relatives back home only at night. But when the quarterback called home one night, his mother notified him of his terrible fate. "My mother said that I was dead," Croyle said. "Another one of my buddies called his mom, and she heard that I'd been shot. And then another one called, she heard we had been kidnapped. I don't know how or where it all got started." Being the center of gossip is commonplace for a starting quarterback at such a tradition-rich program. It's a burden Croyle said he can handle until his family becomes involved. "[My mom] had to sit there for six hours and not know whether we were dead or alive. That was one of the cases of when it went too far," Croyle said. "I guess it's good people don't want to forget about football even though it's the summer and spring. But at some point, enough is enough." But with a promising season on the horizon and Croyle healthy for the first time in nearly two years, it's understandable why Alabama diehards are a little on edge. As a sophomore, Croyle impressed then-rookie head coach Mike Shula, playing through shoulder injuries to gain 2,303 yards - the second most in school history - and tying a school-record 16 touchdowns set by Shula in 1985. "[He] never said a word about it, never," said Shula, who's entering his third season with the Crimson Tide. "Nobody is tougher than Brodie as far as injuries go." During his junior year, however, Croyle's threshold for pain couldn't conquer a season-ending ACL tear in his right knee, suffered a mere three games into the season. After a successful surgery in September, Croyle has made the long road to recovery while answering an estimated 50 to 75 questions per day regarding his health. And sometimes the answers varied, depending on who was asking. "I'd mess with them every once and awhile," Croyle said. "I'd tell them that I'm done playing, that they actually didn't fix my ACL." Now, Croyle might actually be able to provide the answers Alabama fans want to hear. "He's pretty much out of the rehab mode," Shula said. "He's into increasing his strength and conditioning and really looks as good as he ever looked since he's been here. We have got to monitor him, [but] he's at full go right from day one of practice." This season, Croyle plans to stay that way. When asked what he's learned from his ordeal, Croyle responded, "Slide." "I wasn't raised that way," said Croyle, whose father was a defensive end for Bryant at Alabama. "My dad always told me, ?You get every yard you can get when you can get it. And if you can't get off the field, you're season is done one way or the other.' I got the OK from Big John to slide. I'm good to go now."__Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Yahoo! [RollTideFan] Former Tide (basketball) player dies in heart surgery
Former Tide player dies in heart surgery 7/31/2005, 2:48 p.m. ET The Associated Press DECATUR, Ala. (AP) Former Alabama basketball player Kenneth Rice died during heart surgery Friday at Huntsville Hospital, his sister says. He was 35. Regina Bass told The Decatur Daily that Rice entered the hospital July 23 with chest pains. She quoted doctors saying Rice's heart was "enlarged and weak." He was having surgery to insert an internal defibrillator. Rice, who played for Austin High School in Decatur, redshirted his first year at Alabama and played sparingly the next three seasons. He was part of three Southeastern Conference tournament championship teams in 1989, '90 and '91. In 2000, Rice pleaded guilty to drug charges in a case that also involved former Alabama and Dallas Cowboys running back Sherman Williams of Mobile. Rice served 18 months in a federal prison, but family members and friends said he seemed to be getting his life on track. Rice married his wife, Alethea, on Dec. 31. The couple lived in Madison with their 5-year-old daughter, Alessa. Funeral arrangements were incomplete Sunday. ___ Information from: The Decatur Daily, http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/index.shtml Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs ___ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics E-mail Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan - Wear a Cup! [RollTideFan] Can Croyle last entire season? Averages say no
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050727/NEWS/50727001/1067 CECIL HURT: Can Croyle last entire season? Averages say no July 27, 2005 Brodie Croyle will be asked more questions than he can count when he appears as one of the University of Alabamas student-athlete representatives at the Southeastern Conference Media Days on Friday. But the most prevalent question for the Tide quarterback will concern the law. That doesnt mean the sort of law that has dominated the sports headlines in recent weeks, although someone will probably ask Croyle about that as well. What Croyle will be asked although he may not be able to answer will involve the law of averages. More specifically, Croyle will be asked if hell be able to hold up for an entire season. And he might be asked if, after eight straight seasons of starting at least two quarterbacks, the law of averages will kick in and allow a Tide quarterback to make it through an entire season. Croyle isnt clairvoyant, of course. He cant see what might happen in the future. He might even have a hard time explaining what has happened in the past. He could give a dissertation on the virtues of Kevlar body armor, but he cant say, with any degree of specificity, what will happen. The future will depend on a lot of factors, ranging from the maturation rate of an inexperienced offensive line to pure luck. Since 1994, the history of the Alabama quarterback position has gone like this. In 1995, Brian Burgdorf started most of the season, but was finally replaced by Freddie Kitchens in the final two games of the year. Kitchens, built like a beer truck and tougher than a boiled boot, then proceeded to start for the entire 1996 season and most of 1997, a streak than reached 24 consecutive games before he was finally replaced in late 1997. That move, which saw Lance Tucker get a pair of starts, was based more on a desperate try-anything mentality of a coaching staff in the throes of a miserable season than any lack of durability on Kitchens part. In 1998, John David Phillips started the first four games. After that, redshirt freshman Andrew Zow took over, a move based on performance rather than injury. Zow then started the final eight games of 1998, and the first seven of 1999, a 15-game streak. An injury suffered in a tough loss to Tennessee knocked Zow out for the next two weeks, with Tyler Watts getting starts against Southern Miss and LSU. Zow came back to finish the year. He also started the first two games of the chaotic 2000 season before losing his job to Watts, who started the next four games before a season-ending knee injury sustained against Ole Miss. Watts was again the starter in 2001, and made it nine games into the year before being sidelined with a groin injury, putting Zow back in the lineup for the final three games. In 2002, Watts started most of the season, but missed two games with a foot injury, allowing Croyle to make his first career starts against Arkansas and Georgia. Croyle was battered pretty severely in 2003, primarily with a shoulder injury suffered in the first game. Still, he managed to start 11 of 13 games, with Spencer Pennington and Brandon Avalos getting one start each. Then, in 2004, Croyle started three games before his season-ending knee injury, followed by two Marc Guillon starts and seven by Spencer Pennington. There are a couple of ways to look at those facts. The most obvious is to say that Alabama hasnt made it through a season with one quarterback since 1997. However, if you set aside a couple of coaching decisions, much of the musical chairs can be attributed to the fact that two solid quarterbacks Watts and Croyle were, for want of a kinder term, injury-prone. They didnt simply have a recurrence of one problem, but had a variety of ailments, from knees to shoulders to feet, that caused them to miss playing time. Whatever the reason, the fact is that no Alabama quarterback since Freddie Kitchens has started more than 14 games in a row. By comparison, Jason Campbell started 32 games in a row at the end of his Auburn career. Obviously, Croyle cant answer questions about the future. And the law of averages might prove to be just as hard to predict as courtroom law has been lately. Cecil Hurt is Sports Editor of The Tuscaloosa News. [RollTideFan] UA season opener set for 6 p.m. kickoff
UA season opener set for 6 p.m. kickoff Thursday, July 21, 2005 STEVE KIRK News staff writer TUSCALOOSA - At least four college football teams in the state will open their 2005 seasons on network television, but the University of Alabama isn't among them. The Crimson Tide's opener Sept. 3 against Middle Tennessee will begin at 6 p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium, UA announced Wednesday. Fox Sports Net expressed interest in televising the game, but wanted an afternoon kickoff. The Southeastern Conference discussed that possibility with the network and UA officials, and the university had concerns about holding the contest in the heat of the day. The Alabama-Middle Tennessee game is a candidate for pay-per-view television, although nothing had been announced by UA as of Wednesday. UA Athletics Director Mal Moore said a "very limited number" of tickets remain for the game. The SEC is still working with Fox Sports Net to find a league team to televise Sept. 3 but also had no announcement Wednesday. The season's opening week will provide many state fans an early look at their teams: On Sept. 1, Jacksonville State's opener against Furman is scheduled for 7 p.m. on College Sports Television. On Sept. 3, the UAB-Tennessee game will be televised by Jefferson-Pilot at 11:30 a.m., ESPN2 will show Alabama State-South Carolina State from Legion Field at 2:30 p.m., and ESPN will show Auburn-Georgia Tech at 7:45 p.m. Alabama has network TV appearances slated for Games 2 and 3 this season. The Southern Miss game Sept. 10 in Tuscaloosa is set for 6:45 p.m. on ESPN2, while the Sept. 17 game at South Carolina begins at 2:30 p.m. on CBS. The South Carolina game is part of an SEC doubleheader on CBS that concludes with Tennessee at Florida at 7 p.m. Most of the Crimson Tide's games are expected to be picked up by network TV. The Utah State game Oct. 29, which is homecoming, has been scheduled for 2 p.m. It could be the only game besides Middle Tennessee not shown on network TV. Next week, the media get a first look at the season with SEC Media Days, a three-day event beginning Wednesday at the Wynfrey Hotel. Crimson Tide players officially report Aug. 8 for preseason practice, but most of them are on campus attending classes and working out. [RollTideFan] BREAKING NEWS: Judge drops case against NCAA
BREAKING NEWS: Judge drops case against NCAA By David Wasson Executive Sports Editor July 20, 2005 Email this story. TUSCALOOSA | Circuit Judge Steven Wilson this morning dismissed all remaining charges against the National Collegiate Athletic Association in a civil suit filed by former University of Alabama coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams. The ruling, which followed the testimony an NCAA clerical worker, came at 11:15 a.m. at the conclusion of a brief sidebar meeting. "Absolutely, we feel like this is a victory for us,'' NCAA attorney Robert Rutherford said. "What can you say? We've lost against the NCAA, but we definitely will appeal,'' said Tommy Gallion, attorney for Cottrell and Williams. "I am like a tick on a hound dog. You will have to burn me off to get rid of me. We will keep going against Tom Culpepper. That's all we have left.'' The trial, which initially sought damages of $60 million, will continue this afternoon against Culpepper, a former recruiting analyst who plaintiffs blame for the loss of their jobs at Alabama. __ Do You Yahoo!? [RollTideFan] Crimson Tide Pioneer Is Often Overlooked
July 18, 2004 Crimson Tide Pioneer Is Often Overlooked *By LYNN ZINSER* ilbur Jackson watched the myth unfold from his seat in Legion Field in Birmingham on a hot September night in 1970. He was an Alabama freshman, his presence virtually unknown. He was the university's first black football recruit, but freshmen were ineligible to play. So the myth about the integration of Alabama athletics grew instead around Sam Cunningham, a black running back for Southern California. He played so spectacularly in that 42-21 victory over the Crimson Tide, it was said he alone had persuaded Alabama Coach Bear Bryant to begin recruiting black players. It was such a colorful tale that even those who lived through the era often forget the key detail: Bryant had already recruited Jackson. Those who knew Bryant have a theory that the Southern Cal game was not a revelation but a part of his plan to convince Alabama fans of the wisdom of integration. He called Southern Cal Coach John McKay to schedule the game. He also invited Cunningham into the Alabama locker room after the game and instructed his players to shake his hand. "My feeling was that he waited until he thought the time was right," said Sylvester Croom, who joined Bryant's second class of black recruits, in 1971. "I really believe that game with Southern Cal was an instrument in the plan of getting that done. He knew Southern Cal had black players. The unique thing to me was he scheduled that first game in Alabama. There's no question in my mind that was not an accident." Croom, like so many blacks in Alabama, remembers watching that game on television and rooting fiercely for Southern Cal. Unaware of Jackson's presence, they had no reason to identify with the home team. Bryant's role in integration is more complicated than it seems. In the early 60's, he vowed to keep his team segregated, but he changed his mind. He said later that he had grown. As Alabama's athletic director, he opened the door for the basketball coach, C. M. Newton, to recruit Wendell Hudson, a forward from Birmingham. Newton believed Hudson could handle the role of being Alabama's first black athlete. Hudson arrived without incident because everyone knew Bryant was behind the decision. "Who's going to buck Coach Bryant in Alabama?" Hudson said. When Bryant brought in black football players, he vowed to treat everyone the same. His players recall not a whiff of prejudice. "Everybody had so much respect for him," said John Mitchell, a junior-college transfer who became the first African-American to play for Bryant. "He treated me like I was a son. He made it easy. I did not have one problem there." Bryant's players, black and white, still speak of him reverently. He worked them hard. He expected excellence and dedication, accepted no excuses. But the players say they also knew he cared about them. When he saw them outside of practice, they say, he invariably asked about their parents. "I guess because you saw this man with this growling face that looked like it was made of granite, people thought he just had to be a racist," said Croom's brother Kelvin, who also played for Bryant in the 70's. "He was one of the most gentle people." He was also a man who planned meticulously. One of those plans, though, may have been widely misunderstood. Wilbur Jackson had the front-row seat. __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan! Wear a cup!" [RollTideFan] Gottfried avoids speculation on Ohio State job
*http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040626/NEWS/40626001/1011 UPDATE: Gottfried avoids speculation on Ohio State job* By David Wasson Executive Sports Editor June 26, 2004 TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama men's basketball coach Mark Gottfried made his first public comment surrounding the Ohio State coaching vacancy Saturday morning, but declined to say whether he had contact with the Buckeyes. "It is my belief that it isn't appropriate to discuss any job other than the one I have, which by the way is one I really like," Gottfried said in a telephone interview Saturday morning. "I've been in similar situations in the past few years, and it is my position not to talk publicly about it." When then asked if he had been contacted by Ohio State, Gottfried replied "I think I have already answered that question." Gottfried, who was in Tuscaloosa all day Friday and made several stops at the Mark Gottfried Basketball Camp going on throughout the weekend both at Coleman Coliseum and the university's recreation center, had been declining to comment for two days on the Ohio State issue. He played golf with UA football coach Mike Shula on Thursday morning at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, then spoke at a function in Murray, Ky., before returning to Tuscaloosa on Thursday night. Gottfried, 40, is a Crestline, Ohio, native who is fresh from guiding Alabama to a 20-13 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, where the Crimson Tide lost to eventual national champion Connecticut. Asked Wednesday if Ohio State officials had spoken to Gottfried, Buckeyes athletic director Andy Geiger declined to answer. Athletic department spokesman Steve Snapp said later, “We have not offered the position to anybody." Snapp was asked if Geiger had talked to Gottfried. He said, “The answer would be no. He has not been in contact with him." Among the other potential candidates for Ohio State’s vacancy, which was created when Jim O’Brien was fired on June 8 after Geiger said O’Brien admitted he had given $6,000 to a recruit in 1999, are Marquette’s Tom Crean, Minnesota’s Dan Monson, ESPN analyst George Karl, Los Angeles Lakers assistant Jim Cleamons, Rutgers coach Gary Waters, Penn coach Fran Dunphy and possibly Xavier coach Thad Matta. [RollTideFan] Tide-Tigers not what it used to be
http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/sports/columns/040512.shtml Tide-Tigers not what it used to be At some point before the college football season starts, a media outlet will do another one of those polls ranking the greatest rivalries in the sport. When that happens, all the Alabama and Auburn fans will team up to become odd brethren, voting to boost the score for the Iron Bowl. It won't matter. Alabama-Auburn still won't win, because it's not the rivalry it once was. In-state, neighbor-to-neighbor, the Iron Bowl still holds enormous weight. But that doesn't make it much different from other games throughout the country. Sure, it's more intense here, we say. But is it anymore? It used to be Tigers and Crimson Tide fans didn't need to vote their game No. 1. It simply was, and football fans knew it. A variety of factors during the past few years have downgraded the Iron Bowl from the ranks of Duke-North Carolina basketball to just your typical, intense, in-state football game. It's a shame, really, but there are solid reasons: # Tennessee: If you were to poll Alabama fans on which school they'd rather beat this season, Auburn or Tennessee, the majority would say the Vols. It's true. Not in the past, of course. But, this year, after the Tommy Gallion lawsuit and accusations that Vols coach Phillip Fulmer played a large role in the Tide's latest NCAA sanctions, you can't think Alabama fans wouldn't rather put a licking on him in Knoxville. A few years ago, this would have been unthinkable. Then again, so would all the craziness surrounding this highly public fiasco that keeps picking up steam. # Records: The Iron Bowl simply doesn't mean as much nationally because of the stakes. Erratic Alabama is 45-40 since Gene Stallings retired after the 1996 season. That includes a three-win season and two four-win years. While the Tide has been up and down, the Tigers have been consistently lukewarm, never reaching double-digit wins in a season under Tommy Tuberville. This means the Iron Bowl now boasts little national importance for either team, much less both of them, as was the case as recently as the mid-1990s. # Changing SEC: Now that Florida and Tennessee have faded, Georgia and LSU have emerged as the league's dominant teams. A look at recruiting classes and depth charts indicates that probably won't change anytime soon. The result is that the LSU game becomes the most significant, if not most intense, contest for Auburn and Alabama. Then, the Tigers get the Bulldogs in late November. While it's not the rivalry of Alabama, it's close and getting closer. There's little secret Tuberville and Mark Richt aren't pals. Neither are fans of the two schools. Auburn's coaching staff was nearly history after losing at Georgia last season. # Coaching changes: Right now, Alabama fans have more reasons than Auburn fans to dislike Mike Shula. Given the new Alabama coach's timid comments and flair for political correctness, Tigers fans probably won't have one. Tuberville isn't liked by Bama Nation, but he's respected enough to not be genuinely hated the way, say, Terry Bowden was or Fulmer is now. Dennis Franchione? Now there was a coach you could hate. "That other school" — he went out of his way to heat this baby up. # Home and home: There's no question the move from Legion Field to each school's campus hurt the rivalry. The neutral site was a defining characteristic of this series, though many at Auburn felt it wasn't quite so neutral. The Tigers may have had a point, but it's just not the same feel with partisan crowds. # Crisis: If it's true misery loves company, then Alabama and Auburn are joined at the hip these days. Scandal after scandal in the past 12 years have left the state's football image tarnished, and so Tide and Tigers fans have joined under the same flag to defend the reputation of the state, and therefore, the other school. Just when one side appears to have wiped itself out, the other's president and athletics director jump on a plane for Louisville, Ky. Therefore, the cycle repeats itself. Nobody wins, and the Iron Bowl is a victim. __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan! Wear a cup!" [RollTideFan] Price dropping suit against Witt
http://www.al.com/alabama/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/sports/1083489592226870.xml Price dropping suit against Witt Sunday, May 02, 2004 MIKE BOLTON News staff writer Fired Alabama football coach Mike Price will drop a lawsuit against University of Alabama president Robert Witt that alleges Witt stepped beyond his duty in firing Price last May, Price's attorney said Friday. The request to dismiss the lawsuit, which alleged fraud and misrepresentation, was sent to Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court on Friday, attorney Steve Heninger said. The lawsuit was filed on March 22. While he still believes the suit against Witt has merit, Heninger said, he will now shift all of his energy to Price's lawsuit against Time Inc. Price sued Time Inc., the parent company of Sports Illustrated, saying an article published after Price's firing forever damaged his reputation and his ability to get a major coaching job. Heninger said Witt was candid and cooperative in the deposition he gave for the lawsuit against Time Inc. That was also a factor in the dismissal of the lawsuit against Witt, Heninger said. Price made a mistake in going to a strip club and getting drunk during a golf tournament in Pensacola, Fla., last April and admitted it, according to Heninger. Price disagrees, Heninger said, with Witt's decision to fire him and how it was handled. Heninger said he believes part of the reason Price was fired was Witt's concern over the upcoming Sports Illustrated article. Witt said in his deposition that he was aware that Sports Illustrated was doing an article on Price and was concerned about it, according to Heninger. Witt has said previously that the SI article was unrelated to his decision. Price claims the SI article contained seven areas of inaccuracy. In addition to the SI lawsuit, Price sued the university and Witt in his official capacity, but a judge dismissed that lawsuit last year. Then Price filed the March 2004 lawsuit naming Witt as the sole defendant. __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan! Wear a cup!" [RollTideFan] Gallion v. the NCAA
http://www.al.com/sports/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/sports/1083489430226850.xml Gallion v. the NCAA Sunday, May 02, 2004 By THOMAS MURPHY Sports Reporter MONTGOMERY -- When Tommy Gallion gets involved in your legal proceedings, you'd better brace yourself, cover the kids' ears and heed this caution: Objects in your mirror may be larger than they appear. The Montgomery-based lawyer was so locked into a recent cell phone conversation with a radio station that he failed to see a car cruising beside him as he searched for a parking space. Listeners to the radio show were treated to the squeal of brakes, the screech of a minor impact and vintage Gallion: "Oh s--, I just hit somebody." Alabama governors, attorneys general and even Hank Williams Jr. have been left wondering what hit them after encountering Gallion. Gallion is representing Volkert & Associates Inc. in the engineering firm's highly publicized lawsuit against two members of the Mobile County school board. He and his law firm -- Haskell, Slaughter, Young & Gallion, LLC of Montgomery -- have taken on several government agencies and represented powerful greyhound tracks owner Milton McGregor. But Gallion's notoriety among sports fans has spiked since he became a cen tral figure in the hottest issue to ignite the Southeastern Conference in years. As the combative lead attorney for "Team Cottrell," Gallion is challenging the NCAA's treatment of the University of Alabama football program, which was hit with damaging sanctions in 2002, while fighting to restore the reputations of his clients, former Tide assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams. Gallion has waged a verbal, public war, trying to prove a conspiracy existed between the NCAA, University of Tennessee boosters, UT football coach Phillip Fulmer, the FBI, the Justice Department and others to destroy Crimson Tide football. His role in the case has football fans from Mobile to Knoxville wondering: "Who is Tommy Gallion?" "He's bad to the bone," said Cottrell, the Brewton native who filed the $60 million defamation lawsuit against the NCAA and others. Cocky and contentious: Thomas Travis Gallion III, 60, wears his status as a fourth-generation University of Alabama graduate as a badge of honor and has for 32 years built his reputation in state legal circles as a firebrand attorney not afraid to take on anyone or any cause. "He doesn't back down from anybody," said Memphis attorney Phillip Shanks, a member of the self-titled Team Cottrell. "I sit in awe watching the way Tommy has brought together the disparate elements of this lawsuit and the way he's able to keep all the facts at instant recall." Montgomery attorney Tommy Keene has known Gallion for more than 30 years. Though he has never appeared in court against Gallion, he has dealt with the flamboyant lawyer while defending former University of Alabama compliance officials Gene Marsh and Marie Robbins in the Cottrell lawsuit. Marsh and Robbins were dismissed from that lawsuit two weeks ago and have now given affidavits that help Cottrell's side. "He's a gregarious, outgoing fellow," Keene said. "He loves to get a cause like this one and promote it and talk about it. "He's not a traditional, what I'd call a plaintiff or defense lawyer. He's more a cause lawyer." He's a cocky and contentious lawyer, too, according to both friends and foes. In venturing into high-profile, bitter legal confrontations with the NCAA and, most recently, Tennessee's Fulmer, Gallion's legal maneuvering has evolved into a long-running sideshow. Then again, Gallion viewed the NCAA's case against Alabama much the same way. The centerpiece of the NCAA's case was an accusation that Alabama booster Logan Young paid Memphis-Trezevant High School coach Lynn Lang $115,000 to steer All-American defensive lineman Albert Means to Alabama. After a 1-year investigation, the Tide football program was judged by the NCAA to be guilty of 11 major violations, including other boosters allegedly providing cash and a car for Alabama football players. When the NCAA punished Alabama in February 2002 -- giving the Tide five years of probation, a two-year bowl ban and cutting 21 scholarships over three years -- infractions committee chairman Thomas Yeager said: "They were absolutely staring down the barrel of the gun" and added Alabama narrowly avoided the NCAA's dreaded death penalty. Cottrell wasn't named in any of the major violations but was found by the NCAA to have accepted an improper loan from Young of $55,000, then not reporting it when asked directly about it by the NCAA. In December 2002, Cottrell filed his $60 million civil suit, saying he had been defamed by the NCAA and had been unable to find another job in coaching because of the investigation. Williams joined the suit last summer. Gallion became the lead attorney in the lawsuit and insisted the university and those accused of wrongdoing were

Cindy Wilson Ham, 42, was distraught when she discovered her husband had an 18-month-old child with another woman. She threw him out of their Kent home after 25 years together, but invited him back for a last supper with a difference. Mixing some of their dog's poo into a meat and vegetable pie she topped it off with a pastry crust. Mrs Wilson Ham said: "I thought well, if he can talk crap and come out with crap he is going to eat some crap. While I was cooking it, it felt very, very good." And amazingly her husband agreed, telling her: "That was the best pie I've eaten in ages." She revealed her plot on the documentary Revenge: Getting Even With Your Ex, to screen on Five on Wednesday. "I wanted something that would make me laugh," she said. Her husband called her "evil" when he learnt the truth, but daughter Danielle said: "He deserves every bit." http://www.thetimesonline.com/articles/2004/05/01/community/community/ece1298a0083225e86256e83001cc2a8.txt Call yo' mama You didn't have to be from Alabama to cheer for legendary football coach, Bear Bryant. By popular and professional consensus, Bryant was the greatest American college football coach of all time. He served as head coach for Alabama University for the final 24 years of his career. The late Lewis Grizzard, humorist and sports writer for the Atlanta Constitution, told this true story about Bear. Grizzard was having dinner one night with a group of South Central Bell executives in Point Clear, Alabama. They began swapping stories about Bryant, then deceased. A gentleman from South Central Bell told about hiring Bear Bryant to do a phone commercial for them. Now keep in mind that Bear Bryant's personality was that of a folksy, country, down-home, good-ole-boy. His line at the end of the commercial was "call yo' mama," as only Bear could say it. Departing from the written script, Bryant added a line of his own. He drawled, "call yo' mamma," and then with a reflective sigh added, . . ."I wish I could call mine." The sentiment expressed in that added line resonated a common thread with all the listeners and proved to be an instant hit. The CEO for the phone company told of receiving a call shortly after the commercial aired. A viewer called to thank him. "My husband and I were sitting watching television the other night when we saw the commercial for the first time. We were very moved when coach Bryant said, "I wish I could call mine." "I got right up and called my mother." She added that she'd forget to call her sometimes and knew that her mother worried about her. The caller went on to say that she told her husband that he ought to call his mother. He went straight to the phone and they must have talked for 45 minutes. "I've never known him to stay on the line with anybody for 45 minutes, much less with his mother." She confided to the phone executive how her husband talked about old times and told his mother how much he loved her. The executive thanked the caller for sharing the account and told her it was really a heartwarming story . He started to hang up when the caller said, "Wait, you haven't heard all the story yet. Less than an hour after my husband hung up from talking to his mother, she died. He would have never had that conversation with his mother if it hadn't been for coach Bryant's commercial." Well, dear readers, do you get the message? A week from tomorrow is Mother's Day. . So. . . call yo' mama. . . [RollTideFan] UT about to wrap it up.
Yes Sir-E. 'bout ready to wrap it all up. kurt http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/sports/8495064.htm Tennessee close to ending probe into allegations ELIZABETH A. DAVIS Associated Press KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee officials are close to finishing an investigation into allegations made by an Alabama attorney that coach Phillip Fulmer and an agent were involved in paying football players. The university's general counsel office, NCAA compliance officer and NCAA faculty representative have been working on the case since October and hope to send a report of their findings to the NCAA and Southeastern Conference soon. "I can't tell you if that's tomorrow or five weeks from now because what happens is they may do an interview and from that interview they say, 'Well, we need to talk to this person,'" athletic director Mike Hamilton said Thursday. "Basically they feel like they're in the final stages of wrapping it up." Hamilton said he couldn't comment on whether they have found any violations. Attorney Tommy Gallion, who is representing former Alabama assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams in their lawsuit against the NCAA and some Alabama officials, has alleged Fulmer was involved in a conspiracy with the NCAA to bring down the Alabama football program. Cottrell and Williams were fired with head coach Mike Dubose in 2000, a little over a year before the NCAA placed Alabama on probation for recruiting violations. Gallion first made public the payment allegations in an appearance on the Paul Finebaum radio talk show Oct. 16. Gallion referred to a sworn affidavit from an unnamed former UT football player who met with Gallion's co-counsel in Memphis on Oct. 7. The player, later identified as Rommie Hawkins, said Fulmer helped Henderson, who is now with the Jacksonville Jaguars, set up a line of credit for $50,000 while he was still at UT, according to Gallion. Gallion also claims former Vols Travis Henry and Fred Weary received thousands of dollars in wire transfers sent by agent Tim McGee. Gallion read off some wire transfer numbers on the show. Fulmer and McGee denied the charges, and Hawkins said his words were misconstrued and that he believed the meeting was called to discuss a book he was writing. McGee said he went with Henderson to get the line of credit a day after the 2002 Citrus Bowl, Henderson's last game as a Tennessee player. Gallion sent a letter to Hamilton dated Oct. 22 asking Tennessee to investigate his claims and requesting Fulmer provide sworn testimony, which has been denied. In his letter, Gallion also said Tennessee should take another look into alleged payments made to former quarterback Tee Martin in 1999. The NCAA said it turned up no violations in its investigation. That case would not be reopened unless something new was found, Hamilton said. Gallion also passed on information to Tennessee that he received from the father of one-time Alabama recruit Kenny Smith Jr. One of the violations the NCAA found against Alabama was that Smith received money from a booster. Smith later enrolled at Tennessee, where his father said "Kenny was advised he didn't have to attend class" and "a tutor did all of his class work," Gallion wrote. "I would have to assume that you will report all of this to the NCAA as required, and I am sure that they will do nothing about it," Gallion wrote to Hamilton. The NCAA cleared Tennessee in 2001 after an academic fraud investigation. Smith and his family filed a defamation lawsuit in Alabama earlier this month against Fulmer based on statements the coach made to an NCAA investigator. Summaries of Fulmer's conversations with the NCAA about Alabama, which were supposed to be confidential, were acquired through a pending case in Memphis and distributed to newspapers by Gallion in January. __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan! [RollTideFan] Court blocks Clarett from NFL draft (non-BAMA)
http://www.al.com/sportsflash/topstories/index.ssf?/base/sports-4/1082420375177160.xml Court blocks Clarett from NFL draft By LARRY NEUMEISTER The Associated Press 4/19/2004, 8:08 p.m. CT NEW YORK (AP) -- Maurice Clarett's bid to jump to the NFL was blocked Monday by a federal appeals court that left open the possibility he could enter a supplemental draft. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals put on hold a lower-court decision to allow the former Ohio State star and other athletes, like Southern California's Mike Williams, to enter this weekend's draft. Players are barred from the NFL until three years after high school graduation under current league rules. The appeals court said it stayed the earlier ruling to safeguard the NFL from harm and to ensure a more thorough review. Its final opinion will probably be issued after the draft, perhaps weeks from now. Any potential harm to Clarett would be lessened by the NFL's agreement to hold a supplemental draft if the appeals court later ruled in his favor, the court added. The ruling came on the same day Williams filed his own lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan, saying the NFL had issued conflicting statements about eligibility for the draft, thus causing him to sacrifice his college career. Williams hired an agent, which usually means a player cannot return to play in college. But Williams' college coach, Pete Carroll, said it was possible the wide receiver could return to school. "We'll continue to help our guy out, just like we did when he was making his decision," Carroll said. "Nothing definitive has been declared by the NCAA. Some steps would have to be taken for the players to get back into college football." Although Clarett never announced he hired an agent, there have been reports that he did. He was never cleared by Ohio State or the NCAA to play after being suspended last year for accepting money from a family friend and for lying about it to NCAA and university investigators. NCAA spokesman Jeff Howard would not comment specifically on the Clarett case, but he said players who hire agents could be reinstated if the school petitions the organization. "The individual facts of each case ultimately will determine whether or not an athlete is reinstated," he said. NCAA president Myles Brand said if the NFL ultimately loses the case that graduation rates for football players could decrease significantly. "Not because of the small number that may be eligible to go to the NFL," he said, "but rather because of the literally thousands of wannabes who will give up concentrating on their studies, both in high school and college, for that one in a million chance to get in the NFL. And they will be the losers." After more than an hour of arguments, though, the appeals court said the NFL showed it could win its case. League lawyer Jeff Pash said simply that the league was "pleased." Clarett's lawyer, Alan Milstein, did not return telephone messages asking for comment. Clarett led Ohio State to a national title as a freshman but was ruled ineligible as a sophomore. Williams declared for the draft after a lower court ruled in Clarett's favor. Seven others also declared for the draft after the initial ruling, but none is a prospect. Although he was a sophomore last season, Pittsburgh wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald was declared eligible for the draft by the NFL in a separate case. U.S. District Court Judge Shira Scheindlin ruled in February that Clarett should be allowed in the draft. She said the rule excluding him violates antitrust law and unjustly blocks a player from pursuing his livelihood. If a subsequent ruling makes Clarett eligible, the league could hold a supplemental draft, something it has done for players who entered the draft late since 1977, NFL lawyer Gregg A. Levy said. Such prominent players as Bernie Kosar, Brian Bosworth, Rob Moore and Cris Carter were taken in supplemental drafts, with the teams that chose them forfeiting the corresponding draft pick the following year. During the hearing, Milstein said he disagreed with the NFL's argument that players such as Clarett are not physically ready for pro football. Williams was expected to be a first-round pick; Clarett was expected to be chosen in the second or third round. "The teams are lining up to hire these guys ... because the teams know these players are ready to play," Milstein said. [RollTideFan] Youthful mistakes hurt Shula
http://www.al.com/sports/mobileregister/tmurphy.ssf?/base/sports/108228016958210.xml Youthful mistakes hurt Shula 04/18/04 TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama got a little mileage out of touting Mike Shula as the second-youngest head football coach in Division I-A last season. Problem is, Shula has acted like the neophyte head coach for much of the 11-plus months since he was put in charge of the ailing Crimson Tide football program. There is time for the 38-year-old Shula to stabilize the course Alabama is traveling, but his continued maturation is a key element to that end. We won't elaborate on that less-than-stellar oratory display at his introductory press conference. Shula deserves a little leniency for that day, as he was understandably nervous as a first-time head coach. Plus the power of public speaking is not a prerequisite for being a good football coach. Pat Dye and Phillip Fulmer are living proof of that. We will call Shula into account for other gaffes. The most striking on-the-field blunder was the brain-cramp decision to have an eager Brodie Croyle rush onto the field in Athens, Ga., with Alabama trailing Georgia 30-3 in the second quarter. No amount of rationale can explain the utter flight of fantasy Shula was tripping on there, thinking that game was salvageable with a quarterback whose left shoulder was damaged enough to keep him from starting. It was not second-guessing that gushed forth from the Sanford Stadium press box that Saturday in October. The media types, who had already seen the Bulldogs crashing through Alabama's offensive line that afternoon, immediately recognized the move as illogical. The proof came two plays later, when a vicious tackle knocked Croyle out of that game and the next with more shoulder damage. Shula should not have played so recklessly with one of the Crimson Tide's most valuable skill assets. There were other rookie coaching mistakes in Alabama's 4-9 season. But the Crimson Tide was competitive enough -- particularly after having to crash-course on the Shula system following Mike Price's self-propagated flameout -- that it was only outscored by two points on the season. Shula had been harshly reviewed, no doubt. But as a former player he had dodged much of the most scathing criticism the state media is capable of meting out. Then, after a relatively uneventful spring practice, Shula struck again by instigating the so-called CroomGate. All things considered, the flap over removing -- and ultimately re-instating -- Sylvester Croom's name to an innocuous award was a relatively minor issue. It was a spring football award after all, right? Yet, as Shula well knows, spring football is considered the second-most important sport at Alabama by many. The irony is that Shula's call to rename the award for Bart Starr came at a time when the Alabama basketball team's historic run to the final eight pushed Tide football off the front of sports pages across the state for the first time in many springs. In Phoenix at the NCAA Regional, basketball coach Mark Gottfried suggested he was pleased not to be "dissected like a frog" as the Alabama football coach can be. Little did Gottfried know how soon his remarks would prove true. Three days later, the Croom affair burst to life, exposing another rookie mistake. Shula said he did not consult athletics director Mal Moore before making the ill-advised decision, which speaks of chain-of-command issues in the program. Another season in the crucible of Alabama football should toughen Shula's skin while further testing his mettle. Tide fans should hope Shula shows more vision this time around and doesn't turn his sophomore season into a sophomoric one. (Tom Murphy covers Alabama athletics for the Mobile Register. [RollTideFan] It's all about academics damnit!
http://www.al.com/sportsflash/topstories/index.ssf?/base/sports-4/108231804731130.xml NCAA panel considering sweeping reforms By MICHAEL MAROT The Associated Press 4/18/2004, 2:48 p.m. CT INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- For nearly two years, Todd Turner has worked to return academic integrity to college sports. For two months, David Berst has tried to rewrite recruiting rules. Both are about to face a major test. The NCAA Management Council meets Monday and Tuesday to consider sweeping proposals endorsed by NCAA president Myles Brand and designed to change the culture and image of intercollegiate athletics. "Both are very critical areas for us," said council chairwoman Christine Plonsky, women's athletic director at Texas. "Common sense can prevail very, very easily. In the academic world, we're moving into a new direction." Turner, the former athletic director at Vanderbilt, heads a committee that developed an ambitious proposal to penalize schools when student-athletes consistently perform poorly in the classroom. Berst, an NCAA vice president, oversees a panel examining recruiting rules. That group's ideas also will be discussed this week. If the proposal from Turner's committee is passed by the council this week and approved by the NCAA Board of Directors on April 29, schools could be penalized as early as next year. The NCAA would look at graduation rates and general academic progress of athletes, assigning a score to each of the more than 6,000 Division I teams in all sports. If a team then falls below a certain standard, which will be determined when data is collected from 2004-05, incremental penalties would include a warning letter, loss of scholarships, disqualification from NCAA tournaments and loss of money from NCAA championships. The penalty would increase each year, meaning a school would have to produce substandard results for four consecutive years to face the harshest penalty: loss of money. If a school falls below the standard, and players who would have been academically ineligible the following year leave school, those scholarships would be lost for one year. Turner said there would be no limit on how many scholarships could be lost, although there would be an appeals process. "I will be pleased when there is evidence that behaviors have changed and our student-athletes are more like students than professionals," Turner said. "This is one of the most significant things we've tried to do to make academics important." Turner's committee also wanted to reward schools that exceeded the standards. Adding scholarships and increasing on-campus visits were both considered before being ruled out. Now it appears any reward primarily would be additional publicity for the team. Plonsky said the biggest concern she's heard from schools, coaches and athletic directors is that it's not clear where the academic bar will be set. Still, the package is expected to pass. "It's hard not to support academic reform. We all feel an obligation," Plonsky said. The other major issue this week is recruiting. Berst led a task force appointed by Brand in February after highly publicized scandals at Colorado and Miami. The task force has made several recommendations to restrict over-the-top wining and dining of recruits. It also asked universities to implement their own policies. Berst, the NCAA's former head of enforcement, said if the schools put a policy in writing, the NCAA could then hold the school accountable to those policies. Additional measures could be proposed at the Management Council's July meeting in Baltimore with the hope that new recruiting standards would be in place by this fall. Berst will make the recommendations this week, but a vote is not expected. The task force ruled out stricter changes that could have eliminated paid visits by recruits completely. But the panel might reconsider cutting the number of paid visits a recruit can take before the final proposal is completed. "This has exactly the right kind of teeth," Berst said. "It's the manner in which you show the teeth that's important. If we have institutions help us design things, it seems to have a better chance of actually changing the culture." __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan! [RollTideFan] Sweet Home Alabama' not as sweet as it used to be
http://www.cw.ua.edu/vnews/display.v/ART/2004/04/09/40765a2f45068 'Sweet Home Alabama' not as sweet as it used to be It Makes Sense to Me By Craig S. Wysock Assistant Sports Editor April 09, 2004 When I was a little kid, I used to always make my parents turn the radio up when "Sweet Home Alabama" started to climb through the speakers. I even cranked the chords up myself when I got old enough to manage my own sound machine. But now, after experiencing four years of life (i.e. athletics) at the University as a fan and a sports reporter, I'm stepping outside the Bama box and saying it's time to turn Lynyrd Skynyrd's ode to "Sweet Alabamy" down a few notches. By no means am I cracking on the band -- far from that, actually. I've got three Skynyrd albums, and "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" is one of my favorite songs on one of my favorite albums (Second Helping). And I've always liked Southern rock. Hell, I've seen Skynyrd four or five times live. But I digress... Who in his right mind can say that after hearing a song thousands of times, round 1,580 evokes the same sort of emotion as the first few times the music danced into his ears? And by that same token, who can actually say his senses are stirred with the same gusto every time he experiences a particular sight, smell, taste, sound or feeling? The basic message I'm trying to convey is that things, over time, lose their luster. The excitement surrounding a particular stimulus fades. Opinions change as age and experiences increase. And as I've gotten older and experienced four of the most tumultuous years in Crimson Tide sporting history, an innocent bystander might think I'm bitter. No, I'm not bitter, but it's something awfully close. I don't hate the song. But I really, really strongly dislike it. Am I blaming the song for all the losses I've had to endure? No. Just like I wouldn't give it credit for all the wins. However, "Sweet Home" has gone from a tune that evoked some sort of personal pride (I was born in Huntsville, and have lived in Alabama for all my 21 years), to one that reminds me of mediocrity. Skynyrd's anthem to the Heart of Dixie is chock-full of negative connotations for me now. It echoed throughout the stadium the afternoon Central Florida beat us on Homecoming a few years back... I still remember hearing 80,000 sets of teeth chattering as they tried to belt out the lyrics when Auburn shut us out in what could easily be tabbed the worst Iron Bowl in history... And the chorus' familiar twang added the frosting onto "Sweet Home's" cake for me last fall in two overtime tragedies against Arkansas and Tennessee. Funny thing, though, when I sit back and think about it: Even if the good had outweighed the bad, I'd still be tired of the song. If we would have won piles of national championships, been blessed with an army of All-Americans and never lost a game, I'd still want to throw a brick through the windows of Alabama Express (that gift shop next to Buffalo Phil's) when "Sweet Home's" turn came up on the store's soundtrack-like loop. Seriously, it's as if "Sweet Home" is haunting me. Limiting the abuse to only sporting events would be one thing, but I can't even go out on this campus without hearing it at least three times on any given party night. Whether I find myself at a frat gathering, any of the bars in town or a circle of friends with a keg in the middle, the odds of crossing paths with Tuscaloosa's favorite song are about as good as finding bourbon in Bryant-Denny Stadium come October. And yeah, I used to be on the Beam Diet. And yeah, I used to have a blast belting out "Roll Tide Roll" with the rest of the fan base during the chorus. The key being "used to." In comparison, I remember a point in my life when shooting spitballs and popping a girl's bra straps were forms of entertainment, too. Times change. Anyway, I refuse to associate my anti-climatic sports memories with particular players or coaches. So, steering clear of the tangible, I'll drive this rant right into the intangible. I hate doing it, but "Sweet Home Alabama" has become my Tide sports scapegoat. Every time I hear it now, I think of what might have been. So all I'm really asking for is a quota. Instead of having to play the damned thing 20 times, is two or three too few to ask? Maybe that's what I get for investing so much into something I can't control. Who am I kidding, though? I'm a Neil Young fan. Craig S. Wysock is an assistant sports editor for The Crimson White. __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan! Wear a cup!"
